TikTok photo posts have no video file, so I stopped looking for one

Most TikTok downloaders fail on photo posts in the same quiet way. You paste the link, press download, and you get the background song instead of the pictures.

That is not a bug in one tool. It is how a TikTok photo post works. There is no video file behind it. The post is a set of pictures that you swipe through, plus a song. When a downloader looks for a video link, the closest thing it finds is the audio file, so that is what it saves.

When I added photo posts to RamRom, I stopped treating them like videos at all. The free API I use returns the pictures as a list of full-size images, so the site checks for that list first. If it is there, the post is a photo post, and the normal video result is skipped entirely.

What you get instead is a gallery: two pictures per row, numbered, each with its own Download button underneath. No video player, no fake video option, and no song dressed up as a download. You pick the pictures you want and save those, at full size.

It is a small change, but it fixed the most confusing failure on the site. People were not doing anything wrong. The tool was just answering a picture post with a video-shaped answer.

Try it with a TikTok photo link here: https://ramrom.io/tiktok-downloader.html

Have you run into a format that looks like one thing and turns out to be another? I would love to hear how you handled it.

I built a free video downloader that runs on plain PHP hosting

I wanted a simple way to save a video I had the right to keep, without installing an app or wading through pop-ups. Most tools I tried were slow, cluttered, or stopped working after a few weeks. So I built my own: RamRom.

RamRom is a free web tool. You paste a link, it finds the video, and you download it. No sign-up, no app, and no account needed. It works with TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

 Why PHP?

My hosting plan cannot run Node.js, so a fancy JavaScript back end was out. I rebuilt the whole thing in PHP instead. That turned out to be a strength: the site is fast, cheap to run, and every tool runs in the visitor's browser or through a small server-side proxy.

 How it works

Each platform needs a different approach, so I stopped trying to use one service for everything:

TikTok uses a free public API, and it even handles photo slideshow posts, returning the full-size pictures.

Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube each use a dedicated service, chosen per platform, with retries when a provider is briefly busy.

YouTube is the awkward one. Its audio comes back as M4A rather than MP3, and high-quality video often arrives without sound, so the site is honest about that instead of promising a perfect file.

The result is not magic, and I would rather say that plainly. But for everyday links it works, and it has stayed working because each platform has its own route rather than one fragile chain.

 Try it

You can try it here: https://ramrom.io

If you build tools on shared hosting, I would love to hear how you handle the same limits. What would you add next: more platforms, or a cleaner result page?
