How I Built a Browser-Based PDF Toolkit Focused on Speed and Simplicity

Building a PDF tool sounds simple until you start thinking about the actual user experience.

I’ve been working on Voymira, a browser-based collection of PDF tools, and one of my main goals has been to make common document tasks feel fast, simple, and predictable.

The problem I wanted to solve

Many people only need to do something small with a PDF:

compress a large file
merge a few documents
convert PDF pages to JPG
prepare a document for email or an upload limit

But these simple tasks can quickly become frustrating when a tool has too many steps, requires software installation, or gives the user very little control over the result.

That is the problem I wanted to approach differently.

Keeping the workflow simple

With Voymira, I’m trying to keep the workflow as short as possible:

Choose a file
Select what you want to do
Process it
Download the result

No complicated interface should be necessary for a basic PDF task.

Giving users more control over compression

PDF compression has been one of the most interesting parts to work on.

A single “Compress” button is convenient, but different users have different goals.

Someone uploading a document to a website may need to get below a specific file-size limit.

Someone else may care much more about preserving image quality.

So the PDF compressor is designed around giving the user more control over compression strength and, where possible, letting them aim for a specific output size.

Building for mobile too

Another priority has been mobile usability.

A lot of file tools still feel like desktop websites squeezed onto a phone.

I want Voymira to feel comfortable on smaller screens because many users receive, upload, and share documents directly from their phones.

What I’m learning

Building the processing engine is only part of the work.

The harder questions are often about the experience:

How much control should the user see?

How do you keep advanced options available without making the interface confusing?

How do you make the same workflow comfortable on both desktop and mobile?

Those are the areas I’m continuing to improve.
