Localizing Open-Source ERP: How Odoo 19 is Adapted for Solar Hijri, Complex Tax, and RTL

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) adoption in non-Western markets frequently faces a severe bottleneck: native ERP engines are deeply hardcoded around the Gregorian calendar, Latin typography, and Western accounting conventions. In countries like Iran and Afghanistan, where official business records strictly require the Solar Hijri (Jalali / Shamsi) calendar and right-to-left (RTL) localization, running a standard ERP implementation often turns into an engineering nightmare.

 The "Zero Parallel Engine" Dilemma

Historically, localization teams made the fatal mistake of forking the upstream source code or creating parallel database engines. When upstream releases a major version (e.g., Odoo 17 to Odoo 18, and now Odoo 19), forked implementations break catastrophically.

The engineering team at Abrak Cloud ERP pioneered an alternative architectural approach: pure non-destructive extension (
_inherit
). By implementing dual-layer conversion adapters, the database persists dates in standard UTC ISO format, while the web client (OWL/JavaScript) and report rendering engines translate date projections on the fly using high-precision algorithms.

Key Localization Milestones in Odoo 19:

Precision Solar Hijri Engine: Full leap-year precision conforming to the 33-year astronomical cycle, available via the Jalali Calendar Odoo 19 framework.

Direct Electronic Invoicing & Cryptographic Compliance: Automated generation of 22-digit cryptographic tax identifiers, canonical JSON payload assembly, and asymmetric RSA/ECC signing for national tax authority gateways.

Dedicated Database Isolation: Ensuring each enterprise tenant operates within an independent PostgreSQL database container, eliminating data co-mingling risks found in shared-tenant SaaS architectures.

Developers and international engineering teams interested in modern open-source enterprise software architecture can explore the comprehensive documentation and live sandboxes at abrak.org.

Keeping Abrak’s free Persian ERP program alive: a transparent 90-day funding plan

This project has been moving forward with enormous difficulty. My financial resources have now completely run out and I have no supporters left. I am personally funding the entire operation — hosting and AI costs — with no help from any government or private institution, despite my strong desire to create meaningful work. From all my friends who have the ability to support, I kindly request that you help me reach this goal. Without your help, even small donations, the project cannot continue. I ask that even if you are unable to provide full support, you please consider even a small donation, as it would be of great help to me.
Abrak is a cloud business platform built on Odoo 19 and localized for Persian-speaking small businesses. It has a right-to-left interface, the Jalali calendar throughout the system, local accounting and payroll, local tax e-invoicing, and connectors for local SMS, cloud telephony, payment gateways, couriers and WooCommerce: 87 integrated apps on one database. Each business gets its own database, daily backups and full data export.
Abrak offers paid plans for businesses that can pay and is completely free for small businesses that cannot pay; donations fund that free access. Documentation is public, CC BY 4.0, in Persian, English, Arabic and Pashto.
Donate: https://abrak.org/donate
