Remote work gave us freedom.

But it also created a strange new problem.

You can work from almost anywhere — your apartment, a coworking space, a hotel, a café, a beach — but finding a good place to actually work can be surprisingly difficult.

Is the WiFi reliable?

Can I take a video call?

Is there somewhere to plug in my laptop?

Is the music going to slowly drive me insane?

Can I sit there for three hours without feeling like I'm overstaying my welcome?

And perhaps most importantly:

Will there be other people like me there?

That last question is what eventually led me to build The Remoties.

The problem with working remotely
One of the weirdest things about remote work is that you can spend an entire day surrounded by people and still feel completely alone.

You open your laptop.

Put on your headphones.

Join your meetings.

Answer Slack messages.

Make another coffee.

And suddenly it's 6 PM.

You haven't actually talked to another human being.

For digital nomads and remote workers, cafés can be a great alternative to working from home. But there has always been a gap between "this café looks nice" and "this café is actually good for working."

Google Maps can tell you where a café is.

Reviews can tell you whether the coffee is good.

Instagram can show you what the place looks like.

But none of those necessarily tell you what you really need to know as a remote worker.

Can I work here today?

So I built The Remoties
The Remoties is a community for remote workers and digital nomads looking for places to work.

The initial focus is Athens and Greece.

Instead of simply creating another directory of cafés, the idea is to build something around the people actually using these places.

Today, The Remoties has 80+ remote-work-friendly cafés across Athens and Greece, with information and ratings contributed by people who actually work from them.

The goal is simple:

Find a table. Open your laptop. Get some work done. Maybe meet someone along the way.

Ratings from people who actually work there
One thing I really wanted to avoid was building another directory full of outdated information.

A café might have had fantastic WiFi two years ago.

Maybe the layout changed.

Maybe they removed half the power outlets.

Maybe the place is now packed every afternoon.

Maybe it's still perfect.

The only way to really know is to ask people who are actually working there.

That's why The Remoties focuses on community-generated information around things remote workers care about:

WiFi quality
Noise levels
How suitable the café is for calls
The overall working environment
Personal experiences from other remote workers
The idea is that a rating should mean something because someone actually sat at that table with a laptop.

But it's not just a café directory
This is probably the most important part of the project.

I don't want The Remoties to become another website where you search for a location, bookmark it, and never come back.

Remote work is ultimately about people.

So The Remoties also has community features built around the places themselves.

You can share your work session, post tips and photos, follow other nomads, and chat with people working at the same location.

In other words, the café becomes the meeting point.

Not just a pin on a map.

Why Athens?
Athens is an interesting place to build this.

It's already a popular destination for digital nomads, freelancers, developers, founders, and remote employees.

There are countless cafés where you can open a laptop and work.

But the information is fragmented.

You might discover one through a Reddit post.

Another through a friend's recommendation.

Another because you happened to walk past it.
