What I check when my code reader won't give me an answer

A code reader is only as good as the connection and the order I use it in. When mine doesn't behave, I'd rather suspect my own method before the car, because my method is the easiest thing to check. So I keep a short set of questions for each kind of hiccup, a few rules I won't bend, and a simple way of putting it away.

 The screen stays blank

The V310 runs on power from the car, so a blank screen points me at the connection first.

Is the lead pushed fully into the 16-pin OBD-II port?

Is the ignition on? The routine is plug in first, then ignition.

Does this car actually have that 16-pin socket? The reader is for cars that use it.

Codes are there, but I don't understand them

I press the DTC button for the meaning of a code instead of searching for the bare number elsewhere. I also open Freeze Frame before deciding anything. If I need to confirm which car I'm connected to, the VIN button brings up the chassis number.

The light came back after I cleared it

The guidance is plain about it: codes are meant to be cleared after the fault is fixed, and if the fault is still there, the light can come back. So when the light returns, I treat the job as unfinished. I read the code again and start from there.

 Live data is missing

Live engine data, such as engine speed, coolant temperature, vehicle speed and calculated load, appears where the car provides it. If a value isn't there, I don't take that as a fault in the reader.

 The limits I keep to

It reads and clears engine fault codes. Battery testing isn't on its menu, and I don't treat a code as a battery reading.

I only use Erase Codes after the fault is fixed.

I don't clear a code I haven't written down.

Before an MOT, I open I/M Readiness only after reading any stored code.

I don't drive with the lead trailing loose in the footwell.

 Looking after the reader

Turn the ignition off before unplugging the lead.

Pull the lead out by the plug, not the cable.

Check the pins in the plug for dirt or bending before it goes away.

Wipe the screen and buttons with a dry cloth.

Store it in the car. It's 155 × 85 × 25 mm and about 200 g.

None of this is complicated. The aim is simply to know whether the problem is the car or my method.

For the reader itself and its guide pages, see motopoweruk.co.uk.
