Often, I have seen resumes that include some of the mistakes that they may not realize they are doing and I have even made these mistakes as well. Unfortunately, it could result in losing the opportunity or being looked at less than what you're worth. Here are some techniques to avoid before submitting your application to your next opportunity.

Shortcuts

👦 Picture of yourself

⭐ Rating your skills

👶 Including your age

📍 Including your address

⌚ Too much in the job description

🎇 Trying to stand out by design

📖 Adding more than one page

👵 Adding experience from 10+ years

🔍 Not checking your grammar

🚩 Adding skills you just recently learned

❤️ Thank you!

  👦 Picture of yourself

As much as we may want to show off our best features(our smile😄), unfortunately, it might harm you on your resume to include a picture of yourself. Most employers I have met are very kind and very professional. Sadly, there might be a small percentage of recruiters who will judge you based upon your picture. Although this could be a small percentage, there is no way of knowing why they rejected you, unless they were a little more transparent than "we found a candidate that matched our criteria".

  ⭐ Rating your skills

I have seen resumes from juniors to seniors that make this mistake. This is a BIG problem on your resume. Who determines the rating/grade? You may put that you know 60% of JavaScript and see it as "there is plenty to learn in JavaScript and I can always learn more!". However, someone may read that like "Only 60%?! They must not know much! We only hire top-level developers!". You could also either put too low of a rating and sell yourself short or you could even rate your skills to high and set up false expectations before the technical interview.

  👶 Including your age

Please refer to the first problem as it relates to why this is not something you should include in your resume. Without knowing the company culture, you could be conceived under "too old" or "too young". Although I have met amazing developers from teenagers to senior citizens, the company you are applying to could potentially paint an image of you even before getting to know you.

  📍 Including your address

This is not the biggest issue(especially if you plan on only applying to local companies), but you could hurt some chances including your address. Although remote jobs have become a new norm for most companies, there might be some companies that are not willing to speak to developers that they may have to relocate if the position is in-house. You may also don't want risk any recruiters judging you based upon area that you live in.

⌚ Too much in the job description

Recruiters have to go through thousands of resumes and the last thing any of them would like to do is read 2-3 paragraphs about your duties in your previous employment. What I have been taught by several experienced developers is only include measurable bullet-point results on your job description. One example is "Organically attracted 5,500+ viewers with 400+ reactions to my articles as an author". If your previous employment was non-technical, stick to including 1-2 bullet points about your position. For example, if your previous position was a pizza delivery driver, most people know what a delivery driver does, but what they want to know is how good of a delivery driver was you.

🎇 Trying to stand out by design

Some design formats are very unique while also professional, but for the most part, how pretty your resume is doesn't matter to recruiters. The best resumes that recruiters like are easy-to-read and straight to the point.

📖 Adding more than one page

If recruiters are going through hundreds or thousands of resumes, the last thing any recruiter wants is a whole book about your experiences. Rule of Thumb: keep your resume to one or two pages. It is better to keep it to one page, but it wouldn't hurt to have two pages if you have tons of experience and achievements and highly-rated projects.

👵 Adding experience from 10+ years

Unless your most recent experience was with a company that you worked for 10+ years, most employers don't consider experience beyond that. It is great that you worked at a factory for 20 years and then change into tech, but if your 3 most recent experience was after you left the factory job, they want to know more about the recent experiences. If you still want to talk about it, mention it in interviews and talk about your experience then.

  🔍 Not checking your grammar

Yes, periods, typos, and commas matter! Recruiters will check for grammatical issues and can often be a big turn-off if you don't check your grammar. I recommended 🔖 Grammarly for this as it is free to use and can make the process quick and easy!

🚩 Adding skills you just recently learned

Although it is good to show employers how flexible you are as a programmer and that you are eager to learn, you don't add skills that you have just recently used or have not mastered. The most embarrassing interview you can have is when an employer sees that you learned Python even though you have only done one project with Python and only know the basics, then the recruiter asks technical questions about Python that you don't know the answer to. You should only include skills that you can confidently talk about and address technical interviews. If you would still like to add the skill you have just recently learned, put down that you know "Python foundational" or "SEO principles".

This is so far the most fun I had in a project! Have you ever wanted to know how to add AI to your website? Would you like to create a project that will catch the interviewers' eyes? Check out the complete front-end project below!👇

Yarn start

Run command Yarn Start to run on local host

View on GitHub

  ⚗️Technologies

I used React to create my project. Instead of using CSS, I used Material-UI as it is a fast convenient tool for responsive web design. Classnames to use multiple classnames within the components. For AI, I use Alan AI as it is a great AI to add to a website. This AI is free to use up to a certain amount of voices. There is a promo code in the video I mention to get you enough free credits for 10 projects with no need to add credit information. The API used was News API.

  🚩Issues I found

The main problem I had was the functions and syntax for Alan AI seem weird to me at first, but can be easily understood if you read the documentation. Another issue I found is that the video does not mention to hide your alan key before pushing to GitHub. If you are unaware of how to add dotenv, here is my recommended source to get started.

  🙈How to get started

This video is where I recommend getting started. 🚨Don't blindly code along with the video, learn what you are coding and why. Comment down below if you would like a technical article on this project!

2020 Trends in Technology Workforce(so far)

It is hard to imagine that we are more than halfway through the craziest year the world has ever experienced in a long time. Bore this year, it was easy to take the simple things in life for granted such as hugging your loved ones or having a wide variety of available options of toilet paper. This year has quickly changed the new norm for everyone working in the technology industry. Here are some of the new trends to expect for the rest of 2020 and possibly longer.

  📇Table of Contents

Remote Work💻

Demand for Developers🚀

Sanitation😷

Employee Tracking Software🔍

Thank you!😃

Remote Work will Now Be Common💻

I have talked to several recruiters through my career search. I have asked each recruiter what were their thoughts about how the pandemic has changed Saint Louis, Missouri in the technology industry. One memorable statement I heard was, "Before this year, all our clients were never interested in hiring for remote work as they prefer to have someone in the office that is local or can be relocated here. Now they are forced to hire remote, until further notice". With great uncertainty of new regulations or number of cases, most businesses are learning to go as remote as possible to avoid potential consequences. No more driving in rush hour traffic or pants that match your shirt!

  Demand for Developers Skyrockets🚀

It is hard to imagine that within a matter of weeks, your business can completely shut down if deemed nonessential. While some businesses are performing better than ever, some are in near-collapse due to the pandemic. This could create a rise in jobs for developers and engineers as businesses will be looking to adapt to the current situation and prepare for the next pandemic in the future. Higher demand for developers could also increase salaries to retain current employees.

  Emphasis to Sanitation😷

As we were always reminded to wash your hands before returning to work, now there will be greater importance to cleaning. More companies will be implanting new cleaning routines as precations for employees returning to the office. There could even be possible training on cleanliness if your company already does not have one on standby.

Employee Tracking Software In Your Work(or even personal) Laptop🔍

As more companies are adjusting to their employees going remote, the biggest difference in remote work is that employers are unaware of what are their employees doing during company time. The demand for tools to conveniently monitor their company has caused an increase in revenue for employee tracking software. Employee tracking software enables employers to track their current employees and their productivity by taking random webcam pictures, taking random screenshots, track keystrokes, and even flag certain keywords that have been typed. 🔖This article from CNBC explains more about the rise of employee tracking software.

  Thank You

What trends have you noticed that I didn't mention? Are you currently experiencing any of these trends? Comment below and let me know or leave a ❤️ if you enjoyed this article! Be sure to check out some of my other articles as well!

Here are some portfolio project ideas that could land you an interview! Some projects can be beginner-friendly, however, pick the project that you are confident in completing. The important rule is one completed project is better than 20 noncompleted projects. Disclaimer - the recommended videos are in JavaScript with different frameworks. If you don't use the framework or language listed, you can search a video on the same project with your language/framework of choice.

  Full Stack Chat Application💬

This could an excellent piece to interact with the recruiter. This was my personal favorite and can be expanded to add login, animations, etc.

I wrote an article on this project if you would like to check it out.👇

Real-Time Chat Application with React, Nodejs, & Socket.io

Shawn Humphreys ・ Jul 23 '20

        #react
        #todayilearned
        #javascript

  Weather Application☀️

A simple web application that fetches a weather API and returns the current temperature and condition. This can be made entirely on the front-end and there are a variety of free weather API to use.

  Landing Page💸

A good landing page can increase revenue for a company. Why not show off your design skills on a simple one-page site?

  E-commerce website💳

With stores and restaurants closing due to the pandemic, it is hard to imagine how much they are struggling without an online store to continue their operations. You could even use this project to start freelancing for other stores.

  COVID-19 Tracker📈

I released an article when I made the project and had many people ask me about the project.👇

COVID-19 Tracker with React, Chart.js, Nodejs

Shawn Humphreys ・ Jul 20 '20

        #react
        #javascript
        #webdev
        #github

The recommended video has included how to use Chart.js and Material UI which could save you time. Once completed, the site will turn current cases of COVID-19 and turn them into a visual representation of the data.

  Social Networking Site📧

These projects not challenging enough? Maybe make your social networking site!😏 If you can complete this project, you could cater to a niche market and generate users for the site. What is better than a good portfolio project? A live project with hundreds or thousands of users!

  Clone of a popular website©️

Have you ever looked at your favorite site and think of ways you would make it different? Imagine receiving an email for an interview for the same company you made a clone of!😁 You wouldn't need all the functionality, just the basics to get started and allow your ideas to flow along with the project.

  Portfolio website👩

Now that you have a good resume and a few projects to work with, why not make a portfolio website? A portfolio website is a digital business card of yourself. A portfolio site can take as short/long as you want to make it and you can confidently present your projects, tell your story, and present your contact information within one website. Besides, how cool would it be to have your name in a URL?!

  Thank You

Are you guilty of bad commit messages?😮 I recently stumbled across a post on Dev.to that was very valuable(and others think so too as it was the top 5 post of the week it was published). The author was straight to the point and very informative. Check out the article below!👇

How to write a good commit message

Chrissie ・ Jul 30 '20

        #git
        #codenewbie
        #beginners
        #github

Although the author did an excellent job, there was some context missing that would be beneficial. The previous Simply Explained article did so well that I wanted to extend the series!

  📇Table of Contents

What is commit message❓

Why are commit messages important?🙋

How to make good commit messages?💁

Examples of a good commit.🎥

Thank you!😃

  What is a commit message❓

If you use Git/GitHub as your version control and understand the basics, you might have already heard of commit messages. If you are new to GitHub, click here to understand the basics. A commit in GitHub is described as a saved change. A commit message explains what change did you perform to your project. It is greatly important to learn how to make a good commit message rather it is a personal or professional project.

  Why are commit messages important?🙋

I do have to give credit to my coding boot camp instructor for teaching me how to write good commit messages. He made it well aware of the importance of a well-structured commit message. During my time at my coding boot camp, I was corrected each time I had a bad commit message rather it is saving everything to one commit or poor commit sentence. Since then, I will always spend an extra few minutes to make sure I have a good commit.

  1. Easily obtainable for other projects

Have you ever encountered a bug that you had fixed in the past, but can't remember how? Have you ever had a project that you were working on and realized that you built this component before? A good commit message can be easily found when you need it later. You can develop a pattern to easily find it and see what you did to duplicate what you need.

  2. Easily understandable for other developers

Most of us have been guilty of writing bad commit messages just because "I know what this message means"💅. That is great that you understand the commit message, but what if you are reaching out for assistance from other developers and they have a hard time understanding what the process you took because you saved 80% of your project under one commit called "stuff working"🙅? This is especially troublesome when you are working professionally with a team of developers or contributing to open-source projects. A good commit message could be the difference between a knowledgeable developer to a beginner.

  3. Great way to learn!

The best way to learn how to code is not by remembering everything, but by understanding what you are coding. The best way to write your commit message is to make it about what your code is achieving.

How to make good commit messages?💁

You understand why commit messages are important, but how exactly do you make good commit messages? It does not have to be difficult to write good commit messages. The most important rule to learn is COMMIT EARLY, COMMIT OFTEN. Start your commit every time you fix a bug, console log your data, style your components, etc. This is very important to have viable commits. My favorite tool for this is GitKraken as it is a GUI to split up your commits.

  The Three Ingredients🔥

  1. Emoji

It took me months before I started putting emoji on my commit messages. However, I realized how much of a benefit it was adding an emoji to commit messages. It has made my commit messages quickly-grasped, understandable, and cleaner. The best emoji to use is what is related to your commit message such as 🐛 for a bug fix or 💄 for styling your components. 🔖Click this for a cheat sheet on best emoji to use for commit messages.

  2. Verb

The next ingredient is to add an imperative verb to your message. Good examples are "Add", "Fix", "Restructure", etc. Never add "-ed" or "-ing" to your message like "Added" or "Adding". Your verb should start with a capital letter as well.

  3. Object

What are you fixing? What are you styling? What did you add? unless necessary, this should be stated in one or two words such as "components", "home page", "images", etc.

  Examples of a good commit🎥

Commit messages are not difficult to make. Using the three ingredients, You can make excellent commit messages that are clean and easily understandable. Below is an example of a good commit.👇

  Thank You

Simply Explained: Deno vs Node.js

cover photo credits - Fernando Doglio

Most JavaScript developers are familiar with Nodejs as it is a well-established and highly-respected technology for making full-stack web applications. Nodejs is a popular open-source JavaScript runtime environment using the Chrome V8 engine. With the rise of Deno, could we possibly see a new leader in Javascript runtime?

  Table of Contents📇

What is Deno❓

Why Deno?🙋

Good News for TypeScript!😍

Will Deno replace Nodejs?🔑

Should I start learning Deno?📓

Let me know your thoughts!✉️

Thank you!😃

  What is Deno❓

Deno is a new open-source runtime environment for JavaScript and TypeScript using the Chrome V8 engine. Just like Node, Deno utilizes event-driven architecture and asynchronous tools to build servers. Deno was founded by Ryan Duhl who is also the creator of the well-respected Nodejs. The major reason for creating Deno was that although Node is still a powerful, well-established tool for JavaScript there were still flaws about it that he wanted to address. He explained this at the JSConf EU in 2018. Watch the video below to learn more about the issues of Node👇.

  Why Deno?🙋

Under the hood, the major difference between Node and Deno is that Node was written on C++ as Deno was written in Rust. This provides Deno with a more strict validating procedure and is memory-safe compared to Node. Deno uses ES Modules as the default module system, whereas Nodejs uses CommonJS. With Deno, the dependencies are loaded using URLs which defeats the need for package manager or centralized registry(you heard me!📢 No package.json!😱) and comes with built-in utilities such as a code formatter while you would need to install dependencies for Node.

  Good News for TypeScript!😍

A big difference with Deno is that access needs to be explicitly granted which means better security. Because of this, Deno will run TypeScript right out-the-box(first-class)! This is a huge benefit as with Node you would need to install and configure the necessary tools🔧 needed to write in TypeScript.

  Will Deno replace Nodejs?🔑

The short answer to this is not right now. Currently, Node is a well-established runtime that will be highly used for many years to come. Although Deno has a lot of potential to be the top technology for web applications, It is only in version 1.2.1 while Node is in version 14.7.0 as of July 29, 2020. Deno will be in development for a few years before it has enough features to be a competitor of Nodejs.📆 The biggest disadvantage is that Deno does not support most third-party modules. As of 07/30/2020, there are 799 supported third-party modules. 🔖 Click here for the current list of supported packages.

  Should I start learning Deno?📓

For beginners, I recommend learning Nodejs. Node is still highly-used for many companies and projects with only a handful of companies utilizing Deno. While Deno's third-party modules library📕 is steadily growing, Node has a large list of modules ready-to-go for your next project. For experienced developers, this is your chance to be an early adopter of a highly-anticipated technology. It will serve a great benefit to show employers that you have been using Deno for some projects since version 1.0.0 has been released(at least until you find the "Must have 10 years of experience in Deno" job listings when Deno has only been out for five years😕).

  Let me know your thoughts!✉️

Are you currently exploring Deno? Do you think Deno will replace Node? If so, when you think Deno will be ready to replace Node? Comment down below your thoughts or mention what I left out about Deno or Node.

This list complies with tools that I have found useful during my time as a software engineer working with React/JavaScript. If anyone would like to share any tools I didn't mention, commend down below and I will either add them to this list or make a new list in the future. This list will exclude some tools that are most often mentioned in top tools for developers articles(ESLint, Prettier, etc.). I will also mention tools that can be used for any web developer and are not just catered to one framework such as React, Vue, etc.

Full Disclaimer - I do not receive any commission through any of these links.

JavaScript developers, what was it like to start learning Python?

I have always been fond of the thought of learning Python and the possibilities it brings. Not only can you incorporate Python to web development or learn data science, but you can also learn Python if you are interested in other technologies such as AI or machine learning.

Currently, I have been focused on mastering React, but would like to hear from other JavaScript developers what is it like to start learning Python? Are you currently using python along with React/Vue/etc? What were some of the best/worst things about Python coming from a JavaScript developer?

Thank you guys in advance for discussing with me and I look forward to all your stories!

YOUR BACKGROUND DOESN'T MATTER

I have asked many people this year about why they don't want to learn how to code. It has changed my life and the way I have viewed everything, but it seems like every time I talk to someone and suggested the career path, the most common excuse I have heard is "Well, I wouldn't be good at it because Xyz" or "I could never be able to learn how to code, I rather work at Xyz because it is not hard". A lot of people get the misconception that you ever needed to learn to code since you were 5 years old or go to college for computer science to be good at programming. I understand their position as for so many years, I have declined to learn how to code because I thought the same way. This could be further from the truth. Here is a tweet from Danny Thompson who started to learn how to code at the age of 30 after frying chicken for 10 years.

  // Detect dark theme
  var iframe = document.getElementById('tweet-1281401421179617285-582');
  if (document.body.className.includes('dark-theme')) {
    iframe.src = "https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?id=1281401421179617285&theme=dark"
  }

If you would like to read more about his story, follow his blog post below! His widely-known story has inspired many people to change their lives and enter the world of software engineering! He is one of the finest examples that you can become a programmer regardless of your background.

From frying chicken in gas stations to becoming a Software Engineer!

Danny Thompson ・ May 7 '20

        #career
        #codenewbie
        #beginners
        #motivation

For myself, I have worked in multiple retail stores and warehouses. Each one hasn't challenged me to push my creativity to innovate. I always have felt that this is not the career I wanted to do for the rest of my life. One day, I will become an important asset for a company and I will be pushed to create stunning products for either that company or other clients.

That is when I remembered the Robotics high school class I have taken in the past. I remembered how enjoyable the class was and how excited I was to program a small Lego robot to perform tasks such as grabbing tennis balls and dropping the balls to an area or follow a black line. After three months of self-learning web development, I have decided that there was no better time to start working on my dream than the present.

The best part about the technology field is that if you work hard enough, you can enter any career path within technology that fits your personality. Do you enjoy working for big companies? Do you want to grow a startup from the ground up? Do you prefer to set your schedule, be your own boss, and work with any client you want? There is a career path for most people in the technology industry. You would just need to learn the prerequisites for that career path such as popular programming languages for that career.

  Conclusion

It is never too late or early to start working on your new life! The technology industry is in high demand for programmers and it is growing even faster as technology evolves and more businesses that require an online presence to survive the current or future pandemics. There has never been a better time to start growing the skills you need to get your foot-in-the-door in the technology industry regardless of your background.

Describe your worst experience rather it is personal or professional as a developer/engineer. Maybe you were fixing a bug and something else crashes with no answers from Stacked Overflow to how to solve it.

I will start. I was fresh out of coding boot camp with my school project I have spent two weeks making that was ready to show employers. After I graduated, I forked my project to my GitHub and worked a minor bug on my server. After I deployed the site, the whole site crashed. I probably have spent a week trying to find out what went wrong before I gave up and decided to make a new web application to showcase other employers.

Have you been into a similar situation before? Maybe this will help others that might feel stressed out and alone or simply a good laugh while screaming, "Yep....been there before!".

Real-Time Chat Application with React, Nodejs, & Socket.io

My new chat application is now live! I have been very excited to learn how you can make a messaging app similar to Discord or FaceBook Messenger.

        mrshawnhum
       /
        chat-app

Chat application made with React and Socket.io-client for front-end and Nodejs, Express, and Socket.io for back-end

React Chat Application

Live site - https://react-chat-page.netlify.app

Client

Client folder is utilizing create-react-ap and socket.io-client. You must use Yarn Start to load the application.

Server

The server is powered by Nodejs and Express. To run the server, you will need to use NPM Start. For fast real-time chat messages, the chat application is running under Socket.io.

Server has been deployed under Heroku.

Thank You

There are more features to be added, so stay tuned! Please feel free to reach out for any questions!

(Here is example of a good commit message for Dev.to)

View on GitHub

  Front-End

I used React to complete the front-end of my chat application. I have also added on React-emoji to allow emojis on the messages. In a later update, I will be adding on an emoji-picker to confidently add emojis. If you fork my project, you will need Yarn Start to load the front-end.

  Back-end

For my back-end, I used Nodejs with its framework Express. Socket.io has also been used as it is a fantastic engine that enables realtime, bi-directional communication between the client and server. The entire server file has been published to Heroku. If you would like to fork the project, you will need to run NPM Start to run the server along with the front-end.

  Future Enhancements

I will be releasing new updates overtime on this project. My next update will be to incorporate MongoDB to store users' information as well as created rooms. I would also like to add in the ability switch between different rooms(similar to Discord). Ultimately, I want to do a complete design and UI/UX overhaul in the next coming updates.

  Thank You

Thank you for checking out my project! I have been very excited to work on creating my chat application. Leave a comment below if you would like me to create a short tutorial on this project. Please let me know if you have any questions!

What are some ways to stand out to employers on your LinkedIn?

What is something unique you out on your LinkedIn to have your profile stand out to future employers/recruiters? Recruiters, feel free to put in your advice or stories that have gotten someone an interview or hired immediately.

One way I feel is important is using buzzwords for about me, bio, etc. When a recruiter/manager type in "React", "Dev-ops", or anything relating to your targeted career path, you want to be the first 5 people that they see with that search term.

Another thing I feel is important is the featured tab. A good featured post about your projects or achievements could get you a phone call/email alone!
