Every week a new "AI tools" list drops — and half of them are paid products dressed up as free, or links that died six months ago.

So I put together something different: a curated list of free and open-source AI tools you can run, self-host, or call through a free tier today. Every entry links to the real project, and I checked each one by hand.

Here are the highlights, by category. The full list lives on GitHub:

→ Awesome Free AI

 💬 Chat & assistants

Open WebUI — a feature-rich, self-hosted ChatGPT-style UI that talks to Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible API.

Jan — an offline ChatGPT alternative that runs 100% on your machine.

LocalAI — a drop-in, self-hosted OpenAI replacement for LLMs, vision, voice and image.

 🧑💻 Coding assistants

Cline — an autonomous coding agent available as an SDK, IDE extension, or CLI.

Aider — AI pair programming right in your terminal, editing your repo directly.

OpenHands — an agentic dev environment that can write, run and debug code.

 ⚙️ Local inference & runtimes

Ollama — one command to run Llama, DeepSeek, Qwen, Gemma and many more models.

llama.cpp — LLM inference in pure C/C++ with almost no dependencies.

vLLM — a high-throughput, memory-efficient serving engine for LLMs.

 🎨 Image & 🎬 video

ComfyUI — a node/graph-based diffusion GUI, the fastest local engine.

Fooocus — simple, prompt-focused offline image generation.

Deep-Live-Cam — real-time face swap from a single image.

 🔊 Audio & speech

Whisper — robust multilingual speech recognition and translation.

faster-whisper — the same, up to 4x faster via CTranslate2.

Piper — a fast, local neural text-to-speech system.

 🗄️ RAG & vector databases

Qdrant, Milvus, Chroma and pgvector — pick your flavor of open-source vector search, all free to self-host.

 🔌 Free AI APIs

Prefer hosted inference? Groq, OpenRouter, Hugging Face, Google AI Studio and Cloudflare Workers AI all offer free tiers you can prototype on without a credit card.

The full list packs 60+ tools across 10 categories, each with a link, an approximate star count and a one-line description. It's open source, and contributions are very welcome.

⭐ github.com/Faizan-khan144/awesome-free-ai

If it saves you time, a star helps other developers find it too. And if you know a great free AI tool that's missing, open a PR — I'd love to add it.
