Running a free online TI-84 graphing calculator sounds simple: put an emulator on a page and let students use it. In practice, the page has to load fast on a school Chromebook, work on a phone, and still rank on Google next to sites that have been around for a decade. Here's what I learned operating ti84calculator.tech.

 1. The calculator is the heaviest thing on the page — treat it like it

An emulator-style tool pulls in a big JS payload before the user can press a single button. If you load everything eagerly, your Largest Contentful Paint tanks and students on slow school Wi-Fi bounce before the keypad even renders.

What worked for me: defer every non-critical script, preconnect to any third-party domain the tool depends on, and keep the rest of the page (headings, FAQs, text content) server-rendered HTML so it paints immediately. The calculator can hydrate a moment later — nobody notices a half-second delay on the widget, but everyone notices a blank page.

 2. Make the embed responsive with CSS, not JavaScript

A TI-84 interface is a fixed-aspect device. The classic mistake is letting it overflow on mobile or shrink into unreadability. A simple aspect-ratio wrapper does the job with zero JS:

.calc-embed {
 position: relative;
 width: 100%;
 max-width: 480px;
 margin: 0 auto;
 aspect-ratio: 3 / 4;
}
.calc-embed iframe {
 position: absolute;
 inset: 0;
 width: 100%;
 height: 100%;
 border: 0;
}

Cap the max-width so it doesn't stretch awkwardly on desktop, center it, and let the aspect ratio handle every screen size. This one snippet fixed nearly all of my mobile layout complaints.

 3. A tool page still needs real content around it

Google won't rank a page that's just an iframe. Every serious competitor page pairs the tool with genuinely useful text: how-to steps, worked examples, error-fix guides, FAQs. I wrote mine to answer the exact questions students type into Google ("how to graph on TI-84", "TI-84 vs Desmos for exams") — and each answer links contextually to the calculator itself.

The rule I follow: one intent per page, and the tool page targets calculator intent only. No keyword cannibalization between the homepage and tutorial pages.

 4. Cache aggressively, purge deliberately

Tool pages get repeat visitors (students bookmark them). A page cache with a long TTL plus a CDN in front makes return visits instant. The catch: when you update content, you must purge the cache or users see stale FAQs. I purge manually after every content change — it takes ten seconds and avoids the "why is my fix not showing" debugging spiral.

 5. Give people a reason to link to you

The hardest part of running a free tool site is earning backlinks. What actually works: an "embed this calculator" box with copy-paste code that teachers can drop into their own class pages. Every embed is a potential backlink. It's the single highest-ROI feature I added — more than any content tweak.

The live result of all of this is at ti84calculator.tech — free, no sign-up, works on phones. If you're building any kind of browser-based tool, the same five lessons apply: defer the heavy stuff, wrap embeds in CSS, surround tools with real content, cache hard, and build the link magnet into the product itself.

 Happy to answer questions about any of this in the comments.
