I maintain a dataset of direct-apply tech job postings, collected daily from about 6,666 companies' own Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby boards — no aggregator listings, no LinkedIn reposts, just what employers publish on their own careers pages. At the end of every month I freeze the numbers and write up what changed. Here's July 2026.

The headline numbers, as of July 31:

44,381 open direct-apply tech roles across 10 disciplines and 6,666 companies

Net +545 roles in 28 days (15,948 opened, 15,403 closed) — the market is expanding, barely

The fastest-hiring tech employer in the world right now is a humanoid-robot company: Neura Robotics, +364 net new openings in 28 days — more than SpaceX

Only 17% of postings disclose salary; 29% are remote-eligible

 Who is actually growing?

Two disciplines carried essentially all of July's growth: AI/ML (+479 net roles) and DevOps & infrastructure (+227). Everything else was small-positive or negative. That's not a broad tech recovery — it's a market putting its money in exactly two places: models, and the infrastructure that serves them.

The fastest-growing employer list tells the same story from a different angle. The top ten: Neura Robotics, SpaceX, Cssmerge, Fluidstack, Mistral AI, Cerebras, Holderconstruction, Nord Security, Doctolib, 1X. Read that list again — a humanoid-robot company, a rocket company, a GPU cloud, two AI labs, a chip company, and another humanoid-robot company (1X). Physical tech plus AI compute. The software-only names that dominated hiring leaderboards for a decade are mostly absent.

One number I find more telling than any leaderboard: 569 companies posted their first-ever AI/ML role in the last 28 days. That's not the usual suspects adding headcount — that's demand spreading to companies that had never hired for AI before. DevOps shows the same pattern (438 first-time posters), and it's the strongest breadth signal in the dataset.

 What's shrinking?

The whole generalist software stack was flat to negative in July:

Mobile: −419 net roles — 346 opened against 765 closed, by far the sharpest contraction in the dataset

Full-stack: −57 (on 11,790 open roles, the largest niche — so flat in relative terms)

Frontend: −32

Data: −28

Backend: +9 — technically positive, effectively frozen

Mobile deserves its own sentence. A net loss of 419 roles on a base of only ~1,360 open positions a month ago is not churn — the niche shrank by roughly a third in one month. If you're a mobile developer, the direct-apply market got measurably harder in July.

I'd resist the "AI is replacing these jobs" reading, at least from this data alone — one month is one month, and full-stack's −57 on a base of nearly 12,000 is noise. But the direction is consistent across all four generalist niches, and the contrast with AI/ML and DevOps is stark.

What does tech actually pay in mid-2026?

The honest answer starts with a caveat I put in every report: only 17% of postings name a number. Everything below describes that minority — companies that disclose may not pay like companies that don't.

Among postings that do disclose, median base bands:

Discipline

Median disclosed band (USD/yr)

AI/ML

$158,797 – $214,781

Backend

$152,500 – $200,000

Full-stack

$150,228 – $200,000

Mobile

$150,000 – $200,000

Product

$150,000 – $182,000

Security

$150,000 – $180,000

DevOps & Infra

$139,944 – $184,986

Data

$135,000 – $174,667

Frontend

$130,000 – $170,000

Design

$120,000 – $175,000

AI/ML tops the table, roughly $6k–$15k above the next band at the median. The gap is real but smaller than the discourse suggests — the premium for working on models is meaningful, not mythical.

Is remote work still a thing?

29% of open roles are remote-eligible overall, and the split by discipline is wide: backend sits at 35% remote, product at 33%, while DevOps — the discipline you might expect to be the most remote-friendly — is at just 22%. A lot of July's DevOps demand comes from hardware, defense and space companies, and those jobs come with a badge and a building.

What I'd take from this if I were job hunting

Aim where the growth is. AI/ML and DevOps produced all of July's net growth, and 569 + 438 companies posted their first-ever roles there. First-time posters are underrated targets — less competition than the famous names.

Look at physical tech. Robotics, space, defense and chips dominate the fastest-growing employer list. These companies are hiring software people in volume.

If you're in mobile, widen the search now, not after the market tells you again next month.

Treat undisclosed salaries as negotiable. 83% of employers name no number, which means the band is whatever you make it.

 Methodology, briefly

Postings are collected daily, directly from company-owned Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby boards. Every number above is measured from live postings — nothing is inferred, modeled or survey-based. Staffing agencies and consultancies are excluded from the fastest-growing lists so a body shop can't top a leaderboard.
I measured how many tech job postings actually list a salary. It's 14%

I run a thing that snapshots every open role on a few thousand companies' own Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby boards once a day — about 42,000 live tech jobs right now — and stores the history so I can watch the market move instead of guessing at it.

One number kept bugging me, so I pulled it: of all those postings, how many actually state a salary?

14%.

Not 14% of companies. 14% of postings. Five out of six tech jobs you can apply to today tell you nothing about pay until you're several interviews deep.

 The breakdown by niche

It's not evenly distributed. Design discloses the most; data and mobile the least. (I only publish a median band where at least 20 postings disclose — below that the number is noise, so frontend gets an honest "n/a".)

Niche

Open roles

% that disclose pay

Median disclosed band (USD/yr)

Full-Stack

11,221

16%

$150,000–$199,880

AI/ML

9,125

17%

$152,875–$216,061

DevOps & Infra

5,358

14%

$130,000–$170,000

Data

4,247

11%

$130,000–$167,663

Product

3,779

16%

$145,350–$180,000

Design

2,277

19%

$118,240–$166,830

Backend

2,165

17%

$152,500–$200,000

Security

1,732

13%

$150,000–$179,000

Mobile

1,207

11%

$155,000–$219,000

Frontend

1,027

17%

n/a (only 17 disclosed)

The part I find genuinely odd: pay-transparency laws keep expanding — more states, more "range required" rules every year — and yet at the level that actually matters to a job-seeker, the live posting, disclosure is still the exception. The laws are ahead of the postings.

How it's measured (since this is dev.to)

Nothing exotic. A daily job pulls the snapshots, Polars does the cleaning, DuckDB does the aggregation, and the whole thing serves off one boring Hetzner box. The actual hard parts were the data, not the stack:

Dedup. Companies repost the same role constantly. I collapse by company + normalized title, so "42,138 open roles" means distinct live roles, not raw rows.

Honest salaries. These are disclosed numbers straight from the posting — never inferred, never a model's guess at comp. The trade-off is coverage: I can only speak for the transparent 14%. That's a real limitation, and pretending otherwise is how you end up publishing a confident median off six data points.

"Open" means open. A role drops out the day the company closes it, so the counts don't rot.

While I was in there: hiring isn't actually stalling

Whatever the layoff headlines say, the postings tell a more boring story. Over the last 28 days I counted 16,256 roles opened vs 10,879 closed — net +5,377. Things open and close; that churn is what a live market looks like. A board that only ever grows is usually a board that doesn't clean up its dead listings.

Where's the growth concentrated? Defense and hardware, quietly: the fastest-growing employers by net new openings right now are SpaceX (+367) and Anduril (+367), with Nscale, Checkout.com, and Shield AI close behind. Not the names the "tech is dying" narrative expects.

 If you're job-hunting

Filter for the 14% that post a number. Life's too short to run three interview rounds to find out it was never going to work on comp.

I keep all of this updated daily and free to reuse (CC BY 4.0) here: engradar.com/tech-hiring-statistics — methodology and the machine-readable data are linked from there. Happy to go into the dedup or the velocity metric in the comments if anyone's curious.
