If you’ve ever run a Sprint Retrospective and felt like the energy in the (virtual) room was flat — or your team just wasn’t that responsive — I’ve been there.

In the early days of my Scrum Master journey, I struggled with exactly that. But over time, I picked up a few tricks that helped me turn retrospectives into something more valuable, more honest, and a lot more fun.

One of those tricks? Adding a dose of nostalgia and creativity.

Today, I’ll walk you through a fresh retro board I created — my Warner Bros Retro Board, built in Mural — and show how it helped my team open up, reflect better, and even laugh a little during retros.

Why Retro Boards Matter?
In Agile teams, retrospectives are a sacred moment to pause, reflect, and collaborate on what worked, what didn’t, and what to improve. But the format matters. Traditional retrospective templates — like “Start, Stop, Continue” or “Mad, Sad, Glad” — have their place, but they sometimes fail to spark creativity or engagement.

Retro boards that incorporate humor, themes, and relatable pop culture references create a shared space that encourages openness and energy.

Does it take a lot of time and effort to prepare for each retrospective? Absolutely!
But with this approach, I can get better engagement, more honest feedback, and ultimately, retros that actually help the team grow.

What is the Warner Bros Retro Board?
Inspired by iconic Warner Bros characters and cartoons, this retro board turns your meeting into a playful journey through classic animated worlds. The Mask, Batman, Scooby Doo, Harry Potter and others — all woven into your sprint feedback process.

We usually kick things off by introducing the day’s retro board and theme, then spend about 10–15 minutes answering the questions.

First item is always the ice-breaking question and in this case it is “Where Have you Been This Sprint?” corresponding to the places in Warner Bros. Universe.

Once we’ve set the mood, I like to transition into work-related questions — usually framed in a fun way that fits the current theme.

And after the tough discussions about our work processes, I love seeing the team celebrate each other and express their gratitude out loud. Watching that collaboration and appreciation unfold is my favourite part of the retro.
