Build 2020 has proved that online conferences can be successful. The content was excellent, there was no sprinting across campus to get to the next session, and you had access to your own personal bathroom. I still missed the networking aspect of an in-person conference, but there is bound to be innovation here as we progress.

As more and more conferences go virtual, I've been trying to keep my list as up to date as possible. At this point, you could take the entire month of June off and have a conference lined up almost every day.. entirely for free.

2020.05.09 Update - I am truly amazed by the amount of free content that is at our fingertips. The list has been updated with several conferences throughout May that have gone virtual and opened their doors for free.

I am an avid conference-goer. I love listening to bite-size lessons on various technologies, networking with others, and leaving with ideas to dig into.

Due to current events, it's no surprise that many conferences are having to cancel for the year. This is the second article in a series I'm doing called DevBits. These are mini-articles that show how object-oriented programming concepts can be applied.

You’re making an RPG.

You have a Character (class) who has health (field).

A Character can move() or attack() (methods).

A Player (child class) is a type of Character, but also has experience (field).

An Enemy (child class) is a type of Character, but also has loot (field).

Player and Enemy both share the same fields and methods from Character, but can have any additional fields of their own.

This is inheritance.

This is the first article in a series I'm doing called DevBits. These are mini-articles that will show how programming concepts can be applied.

You’re making an RPG.

You have a Character (class) who has health and armor (private fields).

Among other things, a Character can heal() or takeDamage() (public methods).

heal() increases health.

takeDamage() decreases health based on armor.

Other objects are not able to modify the health of a Character directly, rather, they can only call the methods exposed by the class.

This is encapsulation.

How much technical documentation do you write?

Technical documentation, written in the right way, can be a very useful tool for:

Onboarding
Troubleshooting
Handing a project off to another team (perhaps an operations team?)
Figuring out what the heck a piece of code does after coming back to it a year later
Etc., etc.

Would you relocate for a contract position?

I have talked to a few who have relocated for a contracting position. Overall, these positions have worked out well for those individuals. However, I can't see myself willing to take that risk if I was in their shoes. Would you do it under the right circumstances?
