How to Get Reminded When Someone Doesn't Reply in Gmail (3 Ways)

You send an important email: a proposal, an invoice, a job application. Then nothing. A week later you realize you never followed up.

Gmail doesn't have a "remind me if no reply" button, but there are three ways to get close. Here they are, from zero setup to most reliable.

 1. Gmail Nudges (built in, automatic)

Gmail can bring old sent emails back to the top of your inbox with a "Sent 5 days ago. Follow up?" label.

Turn it on: Settings (gear icon) → See all settings → General → Nudges → check "Suggest emails to follow up on".

Limits: Gmail decides which emails get a nudge and when. You can't pick a date, and many emails never get one.

 2. Snooze the sent email (built in, manual)

You can snooze any conversation, including one in your Sent folder. It comes back to the top of your inbox at the time you choose.

How: open the sent email → click the clock icon (Snooze) → pick a date.

Limits: it comes back whether or not they replied, so you still have to check every thread by hand. There's also no single list of everything you're waiting on.

 3. A follow-up reminder extension (picks a date + detects replies)

If you follow up often (sales, recruiting, freelancing, job hunting), an extension saves the manual checking. I built a free one, Follow-Up Reminder for Gmail, because I kept losing track of threads myself.

How it works:

Open an email you sent and click the Follow Up button

Pick 1, 3, 5, 7, 14 days or a custom date

If there's no reply by then, you get a desktop notification that opens the thread

If they do reply, it's detected and marked as Replied, so you only chase what still needs it

A popup dashboard groups everything into Overdue, Today, Upcoming and Replied.

Privacy: no account, no server. Reminders are stored in
chrome.storage.local
on your device. It doesn't add tracking pixels, so recipients never see anything.

Free for 10 follow-ups a month; $5/month for unlimited.

Here's a one-minute demo:

 Which one should you use?

Pick a date

Detects replies

One list of pending follow-ups

Gmail Nudges

No

Yes

No

Snooze

Yes

No

No

Extension

Yes

Yes

Yes

If you only follow up now and then, Snooze is enough. If replies are part of your job, use something that tracks them for you.

Disclosure: I'm the developer of the extension in option 3. Feedback welcome in the comments.
