I had joined Sayurbox in 2019 in Jakarta. This was the 1st time I came across Slack. Existing team was using it which comprised of Tech, Product, Operations, HR, Marketing. When I started using it, I was very confused. I did not know how to get used to it but soon enough I fell in love with the product. Then over the next 7 years, I was swamped not just in Slack but also across WhatsApp, Email. I had to create a system in mind to keep track of every task, action, conversation, commitments that was happening across all these platforms. But at the same time, my or other teams struggled to keep track of all of it and most of the times commitments fell through the cracks and execution broke down now and then.

Without a doubt, it wasted a lot of time for every1. From this pain, came the idea of Zenith. I had other ideas as well in my list of multitude of ideas but I decided to go with this 1 because I also believe that this is a problem that is faced by every1 across the Universe. Hence, being a global scale problem from day 1.

So, this is how Zenith works:

When you are sending a communication to the team on Slack, for example, our AI automatically extracts tasks.

When you want to piece together the entire conversation that has happened over multiple platforms, you can use Zenith's cross platform search. It searches or will search across every platform that you use and provide 1 complete picture of the entire discussion, conclusion and action points.

Finally, when you come back from vacation, you only have to go through the summaries generated by our AI. Thus, saving time in going through 1000+ messages over every platform.

Without Zenith, it is unable to track everything but with Zenith, you can track tasks, information and commitments don't fall through the cracks.

Do you have this problem as well, either personally or professionally? If so, I would love to connect and you also might want to check out https://usezenith.ai .

I would love some feedback as well in return. And always open to a coffee-backed conversation.

youtube-transcript: A tool to fetch YouTube video transcripts via Web UI and CLI

 SITUATION

I watch a lot of YouTube videos and more often than not, I also do multi-tasking meaning while I am working on something, I like to open YouTube every now and then and want to watch a Video.

But a lot of the times, I realize that:

Either the video duration is quite large that I cannot spend time watching it

Or, that I cannot watch a video because I do not have headsets and will have to unmute and listed to the audio which means I will need a private space

In such scenarios, I preferred that there was a transcript available to just read through it. Yes, YouTube has transcripts but if you tell me that it is very seamless where you 1st open the video and then somewhere hidden is a Transcript CTA and you click on it to read it, I will say, you are wrong. It is the worst experience to have.

Yes, there is 1 more way, where you keep the video muted and then select Auto Generated captions to appear on video. It works until you don't have enough time to be on the video and read those captions.

 SOLUTION

Hence, I built
youtube-transcript
which has both a Website and a CLI.

You can look at the website here: https://youtube-transcript-zb5k.onrender.com/

It is free and easy to use

The UI is not fancy and is designed to make the core functionality work which is:

You input Video URL and click on Fetch Transcript

It then gives you the full transcript that resides hidden in YouTube videos

There are options to copy and download if you need it to pass in any LLM as well

Then the 2nd offering is CLI

It is simple enough to install

You can either do
pip install youtube-transcript-tools

Or if you are a Mac user, then you can do;
-

brew tap nilukush/ytt
brew install youtube-transcript-tools

Post this, you run the cli from your terminal like:

ytt fetch "https://youtu.be/BTbvJQXiCDc?si=lCQkKOvs7qmmO-jt"

This gives you the transcript in your terminal

In addition to this, there are myriad other options if you want the transcript in different languages if transcript is available in that language or if you want transcript to be redirected to a file

There is also the github repo if you don't want to use the website or CLI and want to self-host, then it has instructions on how you can do it. The repo can be found here: https://github.com/nilukush/youtube-transcript

The advantage of using this youtube-transcript is that:

It uses the most famous transcript library
youtube-transcript-api

And since YouTube rate limits requests from this library or in general other libraries as well, it internally uses Webshare proxy so that requests are not limited by YouTube

I know it is a simple tool but I always wanted this. I looked at solutions and mostly all of them are paid solutions.

Would you want a feature that summarizes these transcripts as well? Would love to hear feedback, suggestions or bad mouthing as well, which is also a trend these days (especially on Reddit - a lot of intellectuals who love to smash and crash people).

PS: I watch a lot of YouTube videos on Spirituality and Tech. If interested you can follow me and see my subscriptions: @nilukush

plan-do-check-verify-retrospect: A framework for AI Assisted Coding

I have been working with multiple models (Anthropic, GLM) and tools (Bolt, Cursor, Cline, Claude Code) for AI Assisted Coding for the past year.

After doing multiple trial and errors, I have a stable framework, prompts or prompt templates, model and tool that I use for my AI Assisted Conding.

I use a framework that is not new but is inspired from an article in InfoQ (link in comments). It is called Plan Do Check Verify Retrospect (PDCVR) framework.

Before I elaborate on each step, here is my current setup:

Tool: Claude Code

Model: GLM 4.7 from Z.ai

Now, let me elaborate on the framework:

PLAN

For any task you plan to work with you start with a plan. You want the model to only plan and not create any code

Yes, Claude Code has a plan mode but I prefer to not switch between modes and use a prompt to handle the same

You want a prompt that will help to create an extremely detailed plan that provides step by step execution plan with mandatory code base investigation so that it does not re-create something or break something existing

MOST IMPORTANT POINT to keep in mind is 2 focus on 1 single objective everytime you start a new task

In addition to this, TDD is the MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT when you are doing AI Assisted Coding. So, you need to have a prompt in place that tells the model to do RED PHASE (Failing Tests) and then GREEN PHASE (Successful Tests)

For every prompt, I tell the LLM to Plan and use TDD (even for DO step)

DO

Read the PLAN created in above and iterate if you are NOT satisfied

Once you are satisfied, then proceed with implementation

You can say "Begin with Step 1" or "Proceed with Step 1" or "Implement next steps" or "Implement planned steps"

CHECK

This step is extremely important because sometimes, LLM may not remember the next steps they need to implement and would finish working without implementing next steps

Hence, you need to do a COMPLETENESS CHECK to make sure that LLM checks and evaluates if everything was implemented and corectly and if NOT, then it will tell you the next steps or the remaining steps

VERIFY

This step is the SAME AS CHECK but in this step, I invoke a Claude Code agent, build-verification to make sure that everything compiles successfully and is also to verify if everything was implemented as part of the task

RETROSPECT

No matter how careful and beautiful a prompt is or how smart the model is or how high it ranks in SWE Bench for coding, LLM is bound to make mistakes

In such a scenario, you need to request LLM to run a retrospection for the current session on the task you were working on so that it records documents and remembers the learnings next time

https://www.infoq.com/articles/PDCA-AI-code-generation/?topicPageSponsorship=cb9cfb95-79e8-442a-8f4b-72cfb3789778 : Original framework based on which this post is based

https://arxiv.org/pdf/2312.04687 : Paper that proves TDD is super important and required for LLM

https://github.com/nilukush/plan-do-check-verify-retrospect/tree/master/prompts-templates : You will find generic prompt template for coding which includes plan prompt at all times meaning for every prompt you send to LLM, plan prompt is always part of generic prompt template

In addition, it also has prompts for CHECK (COMPLETENESS CHECK) and RETROSPECT

https://github.com/nilukush/plan-do-check-verify-retrospect/tree/master/claude-code-subagents-for-coding has all subagents I use in Claude Code for coding. You can just copy paste this under
.claude/agents

It includes agents starting from Orchestrator, Product Manager to Devops inluding Debbuger, Analyzer and generic-purpose Executor subagents

Why I Built Article Saver: Racing Against Pocket's Shutdown

From panic to determination: How Mozilla's last-minute shutdown announcement sparked 47 days of non-stop coding

The email landed in my inbox on May 22, 2025. Subject line: "An Important Update About Pocket's Future." My heart sank before I even opened it.

"We've made the difficult decision to shut down Pocket on July 8, 2025."

I stared at the screen in disbelief. July 8th. That was only 47 days away. Seven years of carefully curated articles, thousands of saved items, countless research threads, and the backbone of my entire content workflow—all headed for digital extinction in less than seven weeks.

I wasn't alone. Over 10 million users suddenly found themselves in panic mode, desperately trying to export years of carefully organized reading lists before the October 8th deletion deadline.

That night, instead of sleeping, I did what any reasonable developer would do: I started coding against the clock.

The Problem Was Personal (And Urgent)

Here's what really stung about Mozilla's announcement: the timing was brutal. Six weeks notice for a service that people had built their entire reading workflows around for years.

My Pocket workflow was meticulously crafted over time:

Morning coffee + Pocket queue = daily industry updates

Research projects organized by tags and favorites

Offline reading during flights and commutes

Curated collections for different projects

Deep-dive weekend sessions through saved longform pieces

Mozilla claimed "the way people save and consume content on the web has evolved," but they clearly weren't talking to people like me—or the millions of other users who relied on Pocket daily and suddenly had less than two months to figure out an alternative.

I immediately started testing every alternative I could find. Instapaper had decent functionality but felt outdated and the pricing was steep. Matter was beautiful but iOS-focused and expensive. Readwise Reader was powerful but overwhelming and cost $120/year for features I didn't need. The open-source options required technical expertise most users don't have.

Each option felt like a compromise—either too expensive, too complex, missing key features, or requiring significant workflow changes.

That's when the lightbulb went off: what if someone could build exactly what displaced Pocket users needed, and build it fast?

 The Race Against Time

I couldn't sleep after reading that announcement. My mind was racing through all the alternatives I'd tested, all the features I'd miss, all the workflows that would break for millions of people.

At 3:17 AM, I opened a new code editor and started building.

No business plan. No market research. No team. No funding. Just pure necessity driving rapid development.

I had one goal: create a functional Pocket alternative before July 8th that could actually import people's Pocket data and give them a new home for their articles.

The Non-Negotiables:

Seamless Pocket import (absolutely critical)

Desktop app that actually works (no web-only limitations)

Fast, distraction-free reading experience

Smart organization without manual busywork

Free to use (people were already stressed about losing their data)

The Nice-to-Haves (For Later):

Mobile apps (would take too long for the deadline)

AI-powered features (luxury for version 2)

True offline functionality (important but not for MVP)

Export capabilities (ironic, but had to focus on import first)

Team collaboration (not a priority for individual refugees)

Looking at this list, I realized I needed to build the minimum viable Pocket replacement that could save people's data and workflows, not the perfect read-later app.

The perfect app could come later. Right now, people needed a lifeboat.

 Building in Public Crisis Mode

I started coding Article Saver on May 23, 2025—literally the day after Mozilla's announcement. My approach was simple: solve the immediate crisis first, then iterate based on what displaced users actually needed.

The Reality Check - Where Article Saver Stands Today:

Let me be completely honest about what Article Saver is today, July 3rd, 2025—just five days before Pocket shuts down.

✅ What's Actually Working:

Desktop application (Windows, macOS, Linux) that you can download and use

Pocket import functionality - the most critical feature, working reliably

Clean, fast reading interface built with Electron and React

Basic search functionality and tag management

OAuth authentication (Google, GitHub, email/password)

Local storage with cloud sync to PostgreSQL backend

It's completely free and open source

❌ What's Not Built Yet:

Mobile apps (desktop-first approach for speed)

True offline functionality (coming very soon)

Content filtering and advanced search

Export capabilities (yes, ironic - but had to prioritize import)

AI-powered organization features

Team collaboration features (not in roadmap currently)

❌ What Might Come Later:

Mobile apps once the desktop version is stable

Export tools for data portability

Advanced AI features

Sustainable monetization model (servers cost money)

This isn't a polished product launch with marketing campaigns and investor decks. This is emergency software development—building a functional alternative as fast as humanly possible to help people who are about to lose their digital libraries.

The Hard Truth About Solo Emergency Development

The Pocket shutdown created a unique crisis: millions of digital refugees who needed a new home for their articles, and they needed it in weeks, not months.

I faced a choice: spend months building the perfect read-later app while people suffered with inadequate alternatives, or ship something functional that solved the core problem and iterate based on real refugee feedback.

I chose speed over perfection.

What This Means:

You get a working desktop app that can import your Pocket data TODAY

Features are being added based on urgent user needs, not feature roadmaps

Everything is free while I figure out sustainable monetization

The codebase is open source so the community can contribute

User feedback directly drives what gets built next

This isn't a typical startup story. It's emergency response software development by one person who refused to watch millions of users get screwed over by corporate decisions.

The Features That Actually Matter Right Now

Instead of promising everything, here's what Article Saver actually does and my realistic development timeline:

Available Right Now (Version 1.1.3):

Pocket import tool - Import your entire Pocket library seamlessly

Desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Clean reading interface with customizable themes

Basic search and tagging system

OAuth authentication and account management

Cloud sync across devices

Open source core functionality

Coming Very Soon (Next Few Weeks):

True offline functionality (high priority)

Export tools for data portability

Better search filters and organization

Performance improvements and bug fixes

Future Development (Based on User Feedback):

Mobile apps (if there's enough demand)

AI-powered auto-tagging and organization

Advanced productivity features

Integration with other tools

The timeline isn't driven by investor demands or marketing campaigns—it's driven by what displaced Pocket users actually need most urgently.

Why Open Source Matters More Than Ever

Here's my promise to everyone burned by the Pocket shutdown: Article Saver's core functionality is and will remain open source.

The Pocket shutdown taught us a brutal lesson: proprietary platforms, no matter how beloved or established, can disappear with six weeks notice. Users need assurance that their investment in a new tool won't vanish if the company makes different decisions.

What This Means:

Core reading and organization features will always be open source

You can self-host if you want complete control

The community can contribute features and improvements

The tool can outlive any single company or developer

You'll never be locked in again

I might add premium features or even ads later to keep the servers running (because hosting costs real money), but the foundation belongs to the community.

 The Non-Business Model

No investors. No growth hacking. No venture capital pressure. Just one developer trying to solve a real problem.

Right now, Article Saver is completely free and open source. I'm paying for the servers out of pocket because people needed this yesterday, not after I figured out a business model.

Current Reality:

Everything is free

Servers cost me money every month

Development time is unpaid

Focus is on helping users, not generating revenue

Future Sustainability:

Might add optional premium features

Possibly ads to cover server costs

Could offer hosted enterprise versions

Will always keep core functionality free and open source

The goal isn't to build a billion-dollar company. It's to create a sustainable tool that serves the people who got abandoned by Big Tech.

For the Pocket Refugees Reading This on July 3rd

If you're reading this as Pocket shuts down in five days, I want you to know: you're not just losing an app, you're gaining a chance to help build something that can't be shut down on corporate whims.

Article Saver exists because I was in your exact situation—panicked, frustrated, and looking for something that wouldn't compromise on what mattered while remaining affordable and reliable.

Here's what I promise:

Your Pocket data can be imported right now, today

Your feedback will directly influence what gets built next

The core functionality will remain free and open source

Features will be driven by user needs, not investor demands

This tool is built to last, not to be acquired and killed

Here's what I can't promise:

Everything will work perfectly from day one (but I'll fix issues quickly)

I'll never make mistakes (but I'll be transparent about them)

There will never be any paid features (servers cost money)

 The Real Why

So why did I really build Article Saver?

Not because I saw a market opportunity. Not because I wanted to build a business. Not because I had grand visions of disrupting an industry.

I built Article Saver because I was personally affected by Pocket's shutdown, and I had the skills to do something about it.

When Pocket died with six weeks notice, it didn't just delete apps—it disrupted the reading workflows of millions of curious people. Knowledge workers lost their research systems. Students lost their study materials. Lifelong learners lost their carefully curated libraries.

That felt personal. That felt wrong.

Article Saver is my attempt to solve that immediate problem with technology that serves people instead of shareholders. Software that you can trust because you can see how it works and take your data with you if you need to leave.

Six months from now, I hope Article Saver has helped people rebuild their reading workflows and feel secure in their choice of tools. I hope it's made the transition from Pocket less painful and more empowering.

But even if it only helped one person save their research library, if it only prevented one student from losing their study materials, if it only made one knowledge worker's transition smoother—then the all-nighters coding and the server costs were worth it.

Because in the end, that's why developers build in crisis situations: not for the business opportunity, not for the technology challenge, not even for the recognition.

I build for the person who just got screwed by a corporate decision and needs someone to throw them a lifeline.

That person deserves better than what they got from Mozilla.

That person deserves Article Saver.

Ready to save your Pocket data? Download Article Saver right now at https://nilukush.github.io/article_saver/. It's free, it works, and it can import your Pocket library before the July 8th deadline.

Want to contribute? The core functionality is open source at https://github.com/nilukush/article_saver. Join the community building the future of read-later apps that can't be corporate-killed.

Got issues or questions? File an issue on GitHub or reach out directly. This is community-driven development responding to a real crisis.

Time is running out for Pocket users. Don't wait—save your articles today.

Comprehensive Guide to Network Effects

 1. Definition and Basic Concept

 What are network effects?

Network effects, also known as network externalities, refer to the phenomenon where the value of a product or service increases as more people use it. In other words, each new user adds value to the existing user base, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of growth and value creation.

How do they differ from other business advantages?

Network effects are distinct from other business advantages in several ways:

Scalability: Unlike economies of scale, which often face diminishing returns, network effects can lead to exponential growth.

User-driven value: The value is created by users themselves, not just by the company's actions.

Defensibility: Once established, network effects create a significant barrier to entry for competitors.

Positive feedback loop: They create a virtuous cycle where growth leads to more value, which leads to more growth.

 2. Types of Network Effects

 Main types of network effects:

Direct Network Effects: The value increases directly with the number of users.

Example: Telephone networks. The more people who own phones, the more valuable the telephone is to each user.

Indirect Network Effects: The value increases due to complementary goods or services.

Example: Operating systems. More users attract more developers, creating more applications, which in turn attracts more users.

Two-sided Network Effects: Value increases when the number of users on both sides of the platform grows.

Example: Ride-sharing platforms like Uber. More riders attract more drivers, and vice versa.

Local Network Effects: The value increases with the number of users in a specific group or location.

Example: Nextdoor, a neighborhood-focused social network.

Data Network Effects: The service improves as it collects more data from users.

Example: Google's search algorithm improves as more people use it.

 3. Historical Context

 Emergence of the concept

The concept of network effects emerged in the 1970s and gained prominence in the 1980s. Theodore Vail, president of AT&T, first articulated the idea in 1908 when he spoke about the value of a unified telephone network.

Formally, the concept was introduced in academic literature by Jeffrey Rohlfs in his 1974 paper "A Theory of Interdependent Demand for a Communications Service."

 Evolution of understanding

Our understanding of network effects has evolved significantly:

1980s-1990s: Focus on telecommunications and technology hardware.
2000s: Expanded to software and internet platforms.
2010s-present: Recognition of diverse types of network effects, including data network effects and local network effects.

The rise of digital platforms has led to a more nuanced understanding of how network effects operate in different contexts and at different scales.

 4. Key Characteristics

 Defining features of network effects:

Positive externalities: Each new user creates value for existing users.

Increasing returns to scale: The value grows superlinearly with the number of users.

Lock-in effect: Users become less likely to switch to competitors as the network grows.

Tipping point: A critical mass where growth becomes self-sustaining.

Winner-takes-most dynamics: The market often consolidates around one or a few dominant players.

Contribution to growth and competitive advantage:

Rapid growth: Once the tipping point is reached, growth can be explosive.

High barriers to entry: Competitors struggle to offer comparable value without a large user base.

Customer retention: Users are less likely to leave due to the high switching costs.

Pricing power: As the value increases, companies can often command premium prices.

Innovation catalyst: Large networks can spur innovation in complementary products and services.

 5. Examples in Business

Companies that have successfully leveraged network effects:

Facebook: Social networking

Amazon: E-commerce and cloud services

Uber: Ride-sharing

Airbnb: Home-sharing

Microsoft: Operating systems and productivity software

Visa: Payment processing

LinkedIn: Professional networking

How network effects contributed to their success:

Taking Facebook as an example:

Each new user made the platform more valuable for existing users (more connections).

This attracted more users, creating a virtuous cycle.

The growing user base attracted advertisers, creating a two-sided network effect.

The large user base and data collected allowed Facebook to improve its services and target ads more effectively.

These effects made it difficult for competitors to offer a comparable value proposition, solidifying Facebook's market dominance.

 6. Measuring Network Effects

How to measure or quantify network effects:

User growth rate: Faster than linear growth can indicate strong network effects.

Engagement metrics: Increased usage per user as the network grows.

Retention rates: Higher retention as the network grows.

Customer acquisition cost (CAC): Should decrease over time.

Lifetime value (LTV): Should increase over time.

 Commonly used metrics:

Metcalfe's Law: States that the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of connected users (n^2).

Reed's Law: Suggests that the value of a network increases exponentially with the number of users (2^n).

Network effects coefficient: Measures the additional value created for existing users by each new user.

Virality coefficient: Measures how many new users each existing user brings to the platform.

 7. Challenges and Limitations

 Potential drawbacks or limitations:

Winner-takes-all dynamics: Can lead to monopolistic situations.

Difficulty in starting: Achieving initial critical mass can be challenging.

Potential for rapid decline: If users start leaving, it can trigger a negative spiral.

Regulatory scrutiny: Dominant platforms often face antitrust concerns.

Scalability issues: Rapid growth can strain infrastructure and resources.

 Negative network effects:

Negative network effects occur when the value of a product or service decreases as more people use it. Examples include:

Congestion: Too many users causing slowdowns (e.g., traffic on roads).

Noise: Excessive content making valuable information harder to find (e.g., spam on email platforms).

Conflicting user groups: When different types of users on a platform have conflicting interests.

 8. Strategies for Building Network Effects

Strategies to create and strengthen network effects:

Solve the "chicken and egg" problem: Subsidize one side of the market to attract the other (e.g., Uber initially subsidized rides).

Focus on a niche: Start with a small, dedicated user base and expand from there.

Leverage existing networks: Integrate with popular platforms to tap into their user base.

Provide incentives for referrals: Encourage users to bring in new users.

Improve the core product: Better functionality can accelerate network effects.

Ethical concerns: Network effects can lead to monopolies and privacy issues.

Sustainability questions: Some argue that network effects may not provide lasting competitive advantage in fast-changing markets.

Relation to other business theories or concepts:

Platform economics: Network effects are a key component of platform business models.

Disruptive innovation: Network effects can both enable and hinder disruptive innovations.

Resource-based view of the firm: Network effects can be seen as a valuable, rare, and hard-to-imitate resource.

Two-sided markets theory: Closely related to two-sided network effects.

Ecosystem strategy: Network effects often play a crucial role in business ecosystem development.

Network effects remain a powerful and complex phenomenon in business. While they offer significant advantages, they also present challenges and ethical considerations. As technology continues to evolve, our understanding and application of network effects will likely continue to develop and refine.

In today’s fast-paced world, productivity is key to success. Enter bhashan2pathtak, a cutting-edge speech-to-text tool that’s revolutionizing the way we work. Let’s explore 4 ways this innovative technology can supercharge your productivity.

1. Real-time Transcription for Faster Note-Taking
Gone are the days of furiously scribbling notes or typing at lightning speed to keep up with conversations. bhashan2pathtak converts speech to text instantly, allowing you to focus on the content rather than the act of note-taking.

Instant Conversion: As words are spoken, they appear as text in real-time, ensuring you never miss a crucial point.

Multitasking Made Easy: With automatic transcription, you can actively participate in discussions while simultaneously capturing every detail.

Speed Advantage: The average person speaks at about 150 words per minute but types at only 40 words per minute. bhashan2pathtak bridges this gap, dramatically increasing your note-taking efficiency.

Whether you’re in a brainstorming session, attending a lecture, or conducting an interview, bhashan2pathtak ensures you capture every valuable insight without breaking a sweat.

2. Improved Accuracy with Wit.ai Integration for Fewer Errors

Machine Learning Magic: Wit.ai’s advanced algorithms learn and improve over time, adapting to your speech patterns and industry-specific terminology.

Contextual Understanding: Unlike basic speech-to-text tools, bhashan2pathtak understands context, greatly reducing errors in homonyms and ambiguous phrases.

Time-Saving Accuracy: With error rates as low as 5% (compared to the industry average of 12%), you’ll spend less time editing and more time acting on the information.

3. Time-Saving through Automated Transcription of Meetings and Interviews
Imagine never having to worry about missing important details in a meeting again. With bhashan2pathtak, that dream becomes a reality.

Full Meeting Capture: bhashan2pathtak can transcribe entire meetings or interviews, ensuring no detail is lost.

Speaker Diarization: Advanced algorithms distinguish between different speakers, making it easy to follow the flow of conversation in the transcript.

Actionable Outcomes: Easily extract action items, decisions, and key points from the transcript, making follow-ups a breeze.

4. Enhanced Accessibility for Team Members with Hearing Impairments
