During 2016-2017, the roaster of leading players in the unified communication industry looked quite different from today. Then, lumbering beasts like Google Hangouts, Skype, or WebEx dominated the market. It was on Feb 13, 2017, when Amazon finally joined the party with Amazon Chime.

However, industry giants soon realize having a stand-alone video calling app is not enough. Users use this to connect with others across different platforms and prefer to add some tweaks of their own. From that point, real-time video-calling SDKs rose to prominence. Amazon launched Amazon Chime SDK in 2019.

Since then, many, both organizations and individuals, have used Amazon Chime for their video calling/ live webinar needs.

However, as cool as Amazon Chime is, it is not without some serious shortcomings. Listen closely, and you will hear the collective sigh of disgruntled Amazon Chime users echoing in review sites and forums as the application fails to meet some users' expectations.

If you are reading this article, chances are, you are looking for a change. Or maybe you want to weigh your options before purchasing the right SDK.

To help you, here is a discussion on Amazon Chime SDK alternatives and where each of them shines the most.

 Shortcomings of Amazon Chime SDK

** \
**Let’s start with the positives first:

Based on user reviews, Amazon Chime is suitable for small teams. The application offers decent audio/video quality when the number of video session participants isn’t high. Therefore, it is more than enough for small group meetings, interviews, and regular daily communications. And security is a plus too.

However, there are some major points of dissatisfaction:

The Application lacks useful features, such as blurring background effects and polls, and it doesn’t auto-sync with Google calendar.

There are some severe complaints about compatibility. It doesn’t support the Linux system. Also, it doesn’t work properly with some browsers, such as Safari 6.2.

There are some concerning reports of unwanted noises during content sharing, screen going black and choppy audio when the attendee uses Apple-based devices and browsers.

Amazon follows a per-user pricing model. That means even when users use video conferencing occasionally, you still need to pay the full price for them.

What to look for in an Amazon Chime SDK alternative

Like any tool, Amazon Chime (and, by extension, Amazon Chime SDK) has its limitations and shortcomings. If the application doesn’t serve you well, you want to look in others’ directions.

To pick the best application SDK for yourself, consider the following factors:

Customization: Do you care more about deployment simplicity and don’t want to tamper with the original code much? Then pick a low-code, easy-to-integrate SDK. On the other hand, you might want to look for an SDK with a high degree of customization, provided you prefer flexibility and have some serious coding expertise to back it up.

Your usage: Not all organizations (even individuals) use video conferencing tools in the same way. On one extreme, some use it mainly for having one-on-one conversations or interviews. Limited functions aren’t huge problems in those use cases.

On the other extreme, video conferencing can be utilized for more complex use cases such as broadcasting to hundreds of participants or webinars where you need multitudes of tools and features. In such situations, more robust options are required. In short, your usage should be a vital deciding factor.

Cost: Of course, the more you pay, the better experience you will have. However, after a certain threshold, extra spending gives diminishing returns. Also, you want to consider pricing from per user per minute perspective. For instance, if video calling is more of a side feature of your application, there is no point in picking a high-performance SDK with a high per-user per month rate to match.

Interactivity: Let’s face it, working together through video calls needs more than just reliable HD video. You’d want to share what’s on your screen with others, or just shoot a quick comment while a discussion is going on. That’s why you should expect your SDK provider to offer in-built collaboration features like screen share, chat, polls, emojis, et al., so that you don't have to go around looking for a bunch of other SDKs to integrate with to add these features to your live video calls.

The 10 Best Alternatives to Amazon Chime SDK

Now that we've assessed Amazon Chime SDK's limitations and what to look for in an Amazon Chime alternative, let's checkout the top 10 Amazon Chime SDK Alternatives - Dyte, Zoom Video SDK, Jitsi, Vonage Video, Agoram Twilio Video, EnableX, Whereby, Mux and Daily

Zoom Video SDK

Dyte

Jitsi

Vonage Video

Agora

Twilio Video

EnableX

Whereby

Mux

Daily

Let's dive into the world of live video-calling experiences and explore some of the top-notch Amazon Chime SDK alternatives.

 Zoom SDK

Zoom is undoubtedly one of the most well-known names in the video-calling tech niche. During the Covid-19 days, millions of people adopted Zoom for their daily personal and professional usage.

Zoom soon realized the application alone might not be enough for all use cases and Zoom SDKs were born. Users often use various devices, browsers, and third-party tools with Zoom. And these ecosystems are often pretty diverse.

Zoom SDK provides a solution by allowing users to integrate Zoom’s tech into their own ecosystems.

Zoom SDK in short:

With Zoom SDK, you can conduct video sessions with up to 1,000 participants.

You get to access Zoom meetings' features, such as a breakout room, Remote support, Live recording, Polls, and Custom backgrounds.

Zoom supports open translation extensibility. Simply put, it translates different languages during the video call. It can be extremely useful for dealing with language barriers while interacting with individuals from various cultures.

Zoom is now a lot more secure, but Zoombombing and other security loopholes will always remain as blemishes to Zoom’s otherwise pristine reputation.

Pricing is a big concern for many. Most of its good features often come with extra costs.

Zoom SDK doesn’t offer a prebuilt UI kit.

If video participants don’t have great connectivity, Zoom SDK doesn’t have any means to ensure good video quality.

Zoom SDK pricing:

With Zoom SDK, you get 10,000 mins free on a monthly basis. Any usage past that threshold would cost $0.31 per user minute. The recording cost is $100 per month for 1 TB of storage.

There are three separate customer support plans: Access, Premier, and Premier+.

 Dyte

“_Dyte made integrating video/audio calling into my app super simple and led to a more fun development experience.” - Dyte User, _

Usually, the number of users who have both actual needs and resources/required expertise for a highly customizable live video conferencing SDK is low. This group mostly consists of large businesses with complex needs.

The majority of users, like Educational institutes, service-based businesses, and SMEs, prefer a reliable SDK that is easy to integrate without writing hundreds of lines of code. Dyte SDK perfectly fits this requirement.

For starters, Dyte helps you integrate secure, high-quality live video into your custom business application ecosystem with minimal coding. It also provides advanced analytics and loads of collaborative features and integrations.

Dyte video SDK in short:

Dyte SDK does the heavy lifting on your behalf by managing audio/video for high quality and minimum possible lag on its own. It frees you up from having to rewrite codes for the best performance.

Use prebuilt Dyte UI kit components for a low coding experience. However, if you want to customize heavily to suit your needs, you can do so with Dyte core SDK. In short, Dyte is for both low-code and pro-code users.

You can stream to a few participants to over 10k using your web apps built on Dyte SDK.

One of the cool things about Dyte is its analytics. You will find detailed reports on participant interactions, duration, and more. These can be analyzed to understand and improve participant engagement.

Interactive features make otherwise boring video sessions engaging. And Dyte has a plethora of such features: rich chat, screen share, expandable whiteboards, and many more. On top of that, you can easily connect other applications with your Dyte SDK-based custom applications thanks to Dyte’s large integration library.

Build your app on one platform, and it will reliably work on different browsers, operating systems, and devices.

Dyte SDK supports:

Mobile: Flutter, Android (Java/Kotlin), iOS (Objective-C/Swift), React Native

Web: Javascript Core SDK + UI Kit for React JS, Angular, Web Components for everything else

Desktop: Electron

Dyte pricing:

Dyte provides free 10,000 minutes/month. Once you cross the 10k min mark in a month, the Product price begins at $0.004 per user per minute, with recordings costing $0.010 per minute and RTMP out costing $0.015 per minute. For volume discounts, schedule a call with our product experts.

In addition, Dyte provides free 24-hour assistance to all clients. You can contact the team for anything, whether it’s a simple question or you need help during some major online events or serious tech issues so start building

 Jitsi

Jitsi is a collection of multiple open-source projects for video conferencing. Since it’s open source, you can literally customize and use it any way you want.

At its core, Jitsi comprises a few featured projects such as Jitsi Meet, Jitsi Videobridge, Jibri, and Jigsai.

Jitsi in short:

Jitsi is open-source and free. You can use it in any way you want.

Jitsi Meet comes with features like text sharing via Etherpad, Locking a room, text chatting (web only), Raising hands, Youtube video access during the call, audio-only calls, and third-party app integrations.

You won’t have crucial collaborative features such as screen sharing, recording, the telephone dial-in to a conference, etc., with Jitsi Meet alone. For those features, you need to set up Jibri and JIgsai (other projects under Jitsi). That means extra time and resource investment, and more codes.

The extra work required to set up different components makes Jitsi not suitable for users looking for a low-code option.

Video calls are end-to-end encrypted, but it doesn’t cover chat or polls. So if you are looking for iron-clad security, Jitsi might not be the best choice for you.

It can consume a lot of bandwidth which isn’t surprising considering how Jitsi Videobridge functions.

Jitsi might feel a little underwhelming for large organizations that need an SDK for frequent long video sessions with a large number of participants involved.

Jisti pricing:

It’s free. You don’t need to pay for any Jitsi component you use. However, the downside is that you don’t get any dedicated technical support. You might find some help from community members, though.

 Vonage Video [TokBox]

The TokBox API (now known as Vonage) is another solid option for integrating live video and audio into your web or mobile applications. It is built on WebRTC standards.

TokBox (Vonage Video) in short:

Video conferences can accommodate up to 25 users. It can be a problem if you plan to invite a large number of participants or live stream.

With ToKBox SDK, you get all the essential collaborative features, such as a chat option, whiteboard, emoji, and more. You also have access to performance data through features like “Detailed meeting log.”

Audio is another strength point of TokBox. It offers dial-in numbers for 60 different countries. You can add up to 200 participants during audio conferences.

According to existing users, call quality is satisfactory overall but not without some occasional issues with audio quality.

It encrypts all the data (video, audio, and signaling data) with AES-256 encryption.

TokBox SDK library covers web, iOS, Android, Linux, Windows, and server-side SDKs.

TokBox SDK doesn’t come with a prebuilt UI kit.

No sophisticated means to stabilize video/audio quality in case of poor network connectivity.

TokBox pricing:

The basic plan starts at $9.99/month and offers 2000 free minutes. After that, the price is $0.00395 per user per minute for any usage above your free limit. For saving your video recordings, a minimum of $0.0125 per minute is the rate. Adding advanced features (like Advanced Insights API or Allowed IP list) will shoot the cost in the $5000-$1500 per month range.

You can find more details about Tokobx pricing here.

 Agora

Any list of live video call SDKs is incomplete without Agora. Agora offers separate SDKs for video calling, audio, interactive messaging, live streaming, whiteboard, and chat. You can use some or all of these SDKs to create your in-app video/audio calling experience.

Agora in short:

You need to use separate SDKs for video calling, audio calling, chat, and whiteboard. Think of these as pieces of the whole puzzle that you use to make the puzzle (your application) complete. It makes Agora very flexible, and you don’t pay for any feature that you don’t use. At the same time, it can feel too complex for users looking for a low-code solution.

SDKs support different platforms such as Android, iOS, Windows, Web, Electron, and Flutter.

You will have all the major features required for participant engagement: Whiteboard, file sharing, polling, call recording, polling, and AI-powered noise cancellation.

However, many users complain about documentation not being helpful enough and not pointing the developer in the right direction. Many aren’t fans of Agora’s support either.

Agora’s starter support plan isn’t the best.

Agora pricing:

Agora offers 10,000 mins free every month. Once that limit has been reached, an audio call costs $0.99/1000 user minutes, a video call (Full HD) costs $8.99/1000 user minutes, and the whiteboard feature comes at $1.40/1000 user minutes.

Additional advanced features are billed separately. For example, you pay $149/month for standard Agora analytics.

Agora support comes in 4 plans: starter (free), standard ($1200/month), premium ($2999/month), and enterprise ($4900/month). The starter plan (free) seems a little underwhelming compared to paid plans.

If you're interested in delving deeper, we've written a comprehensive article on Agora pricing that provides an in-depth analysis.

 Twilio Video

Twilio shines when it comes to VoIP calls and SMSes. However, it currently offers a bunch of SDKs that you can use as the building blocks of your customized app with embedded live audio/ video streaming.

Twilio has SDKs for Programmable SMS, voice, video, the internet of things, and many more. Feel free to use them either as the base of your application or to add an extra communication channel to your existing application.

Twilio video in short:

Twilio provides SDKs for programmable SMS, audio, video, and other communication channels. These SDKs are compatible with iOS, Android, and Web platforms.

You need to configure SDKs for situations where multiple video/ audio inputs are involved. (Think of a situation where two people are conducting a video interview.) Therefore, you might need a lot more than a few lines of code.

Twilio video SDK supports a maximum of 50 people.

Twilio falls short in the plugins department. So it’s on you to find ways to integrate other applications with Twilio. It may not be of everyone’s liking, but Twilio being Dev-focused is not surprising.

Twilio SDK doesn’t offer some basic features such as chat, screen sharing, whiteboard and etc.

The free support plan is lackluster. You can expect decent support only after paying thousands of dollars.

Twilio Video pricing:

Twilio has a free plan. It, however, is for 1-in-1 video applications only. Their standard plan comes at $0.004/per participant per minute, and recording composition costs $0.01/per composed minute. In addition, Standard plan users get free 10GB storage and pay $0.00167/GB per day for additional space.

Like other entries on this list, Twilio also has multiple support plans. The basic plan is free, but the support, as you can expect, is limited. Their “Business Plan” is priced at $1500/month (or 6% of total spending), and the top-tier “Personalized” Plan is at $5000/month.

You can find more details about Twilio Video pricing. Checkout an in-depth comparison analysis for Twilio vs Amazon Chime SDK.

 EnableX

Enablex is another Amazon Chime API alternative that resides on the low-code side of the spectrum. It does offer APIs for embedded videos, voice, and SMS. These APIs support all major coding languages- Java, PHP, Python, and more. Unlike other entries, Enablex requires very few lines of code.

EnableX in short:

With Video API, it is possible to add a custom video-calling solution to your existing application with minimal coding. You get features like Whiteboard, Live recording, Co-browsing, Screen-share, and Live analytics. Up to 100 people can join live video meetings.

Low code video API helps you build a tailored made video calling app with custom UI and branding. You can just drag and drop elements and get your app up and running.

The APIs work across iOS, Android, and most browsers.

You can Live stream directly from your mobile and web app with EnableX. Alternatively, connect with YouTube and stream directly.

Enablex isn’t the most affordable Amazon Chime SDK alternative out there.

Though Enablex is a low-code alternative like Dyte, it doesn’t come with sophisticated logic for handling video quality during poor network conditions.

Enablex pricing:

Enablex asks for $0.004/per participant per minute for a room for 50 people. For a room of 50+ size, a custom price is applicable. For recording and storage, you pay $0.01 per participant per minute and $0.05/ per GB per month. Another $500/month will be added to your bill if you want your video encrypted.

 Whereby

Chances are you have been in situations where you clicked on the meeting link only to find out you need to download a big fat video-calling app first and then create an account before joining the meeting.

Not the best experience, right?

Whereby team members agree, and that’s why they created an app that just lets visitors join without downloading the application or signing up for an account.

Whereby offers an API that lets you add the full might of Whereby video tech to your application.

Whereby in short:

It makes getting on a video call easy. Once the link is shared, your participants can join by clicking on the link. No need for account creation or application download.

Whereby don’t store user data. Your participants just put their names and wait till you allow them to your meeting room.

You get features like Whiteboard(powered by Miro), Live streaming, Live chat, User roles (Host, Participant, Viewers), Integrations, Waiting rooms, and many more.

Whereby supports up to 200 persons per session.

The default video calling app, Whereby meet, offers UI customization and white labeling.

The API supports various mobile platforms (iOS, Android, Flutter, and React Native) and Web platforms.

WhereBy probably doesn’t have any specific means to retain video quality when the live video participant doesn’t have a good connection and the latest devices.

Whereby users expect a better customer support experience.

Whereby pricing:

Whereby offers relatively simpler pricing plans. At the bottom, you get the Explore plan which is free but limited in features. The Build plan comes at $9.99/month. This plan includes 2000 participant minutes per month, $0.004/min for additional minutes, and cloud recording at $0.01 per minute.

 Mux

Mux is another mention-worthy Amazon Chime alternative that can be a key component of your custom video streaming applications. It comes with APIs for videos, data, and web players for Mux videos.

Mux offers a great degree of customization freedom. On top of that, it comes with interesting features like Simulcast.

Mux in short:

The SDK allows you to include real-time videos and live streams in your application.

Thanks to MuX Simulcast, you can forward a live stream to social media platforms like Facebook, Twitch, etc. In other words, you reach all your viewers across different platforms with a single live session.

MuX encodes videos very first while viewers are watching them. It cuts the transcoding time drastically. In other words, you don’t have to wait long to watch it after uploading.

Auto-generated Live captions are another handy MUX feature.

MUX SDKs allow multiple user roles. You can control the degree of privilege one user can have during the meeting.

With Watermarking feature, label your video with your branding icons.

We couldn’t find any feature that resembles Dyte’s auto-track management. In other words, there is no such feature that frees up the developer from writing codes for video/audio publish and subscribe logic.

Mux’s support isn’t bad per se. But it's not great either.

Mux pricing:

Mux’s “Pay as you go” model costs you $20 at the start. Afterward, you pay $32/1k minutes for encoding, $.240/1K minutes for storage, and $0.96/1K minutes for live streaming. There are custom plans available for super high volume usage.

 Daily

Daily is another Amazon Chime SDK alternative that allows developers to add real-time video/audio calls directly to web/mobile applications. The SDK covers all the features required for unified communication across video and audio channels.

There are two ways to utilize Daily to build video/audio calling-based applications.

Daily Client SDK is for building your app from zero. It allows you to create custom UI and brings the power of Daily’s core APIs and Daily Prebuilt.

This Daily Prebuilt itself is an API that lets you add a real-time video to your application with a few lines of code.

Daily in short:

Prebuilt offers the basics such as Breakout rooms, Live transcriptions, Recording, Whiteboard, and Live text chat.

APIs are compatible with JavaScript, React, iOS, Android, and Flutter.

You can find user behavior and call performance by checking logs and observing media quality metrics through analytics.

APIs are built for a smooth cross-platform experience. You will have mobile-specific features (like camera flip) integrated into your application.

Pricing is a major downside of Daily. Based on user feedback, many consider Daily to be on the pricier side and not “shoestring budget entrepreneur” friendly.

Support isn’t the strongest point of Daily either. Users complain about lackluster support.

We don’t know of any feature that ensures that the video quality doesn’t take a hit even when network quality is poor.

Daily pricing:

The first 10,000 minutes are free with Daily plans. Afterward, you pay $0.004 per participant minute for videos, $0.0012 per participant minute for live streaming, and $0.0099 per participant minute for audio-only.

The support package starts with a free one which includes email and chat support. But for reliable and robust support, you need to pick either of three plans: Advanced support ($250/month), Premium support ($1900/month), and Enterprise support ($3900/month).

 Wrapping up

If you want to ditch Amazon Chime SDK for not being suitable for your need, you have options ranging from low-code to super customizable multiple API based (read: requires a high degree of coding knowledge) solutions.

Dyte is a perfect Amazon Chime SDK alternative for anyone looking for a high-performance, low-code solution. You can embed live video conferencing SDK and customize that in a very short time with Dyte. At the same time, it offers freedom of flexibility for those who love to do things in their way and code with their own hands.

Feel free to check Dyte's Quickstart guide and explore the sample app built on top of Dyte.

Sign up today and claim your free 10,000 minutes. You can also reach out to the Dyte team for more information.

Did you ever get late for a meeting, and when trying to join, got hit with a: “download app to attend,” yeah, us too. And that’s what Whereby Video SDK tries to sell its services on. It claims to be a web-based video SDK that lets users attend meetings online without downloading an app. But, there’s always a but. Whereby just plainly doesn’t deliver.

It offers poor call reliability, and its customization is basic at best. So if you have even 1 second of packet loss, consider your call disconnected for minutes, and what if you don’t like the meeting interface? Too bad you can just change the logo and the colors.

Need I go more on why you should consider an alternative for Whereby? Yes, I will. I found some reviews online [summairzed for ease of consumption]:

It does not allow as many free users as other alternatives.

There is a significant lack of accessible apps within the platform.

Optimizing the available screen area can be challenging.

Developers need to enable more integration during collaborations.

So, if you think there are other video SDK platforms you can choose to make business communication and collaboration easier, then you are not wrong.

This guide will look at the top Whereby alternatives that can help you improve business communication and collaboration via video conferencing and other cool features.

Why Is Looking for a Whereby Alternative a Good Idea

Businesses constantly strive to stay ahead of the competition. One sure-shot way to gain an edge is by incorporating live video into your operations. That's why it's essential not to stick to a single platform and explore alternative video SDK options.

But before we dive into the alternatives, here are a few things to look for when considering a Whereby alternative.

Collaborative features should be readily available in the SDK.

The SDK should provide pre-designed UI components to facilitate rapid development of the interface for your live video solution.

An all-in-one SDK should offer comprehensive features, ranging from video calls to streaming and everything in between.

Advanced analytics, such as per-meeting usage, user on-time, and interactions, should be trackable.

The SDK should handle backend tasks like managing publish/subscribe logic and network deterioration.

Here are the Top 10 Whereby Alternatives:

Now that we've assessed Whereby's limitations and what to look for in a Whereby alternative, let's checkout Top 10 whereby alternatives including Dyte, Twilio, Zoom Video SDK, Daily, EnableX, TokBox, AWS Chime, Mux, Jitsi and Agora.

Let's assess features, drawbacks and pricing for each of Whereby Alternatives:

Twilio

Dyte

Zoom Video SDK

Daily

EnableX

TokBox

AWS chime

Mux

Jitsi

Agora

Are you ready to take your live video-calling game and explore the above mentioned alternatives?

In the following lines, we will get a bird’s eye view of each solution and compare them to Whereby to help you make an informed decision for your business.

Please Note: Our reviews are based on extensive research and honest user feedback, so you can trust us to provide valuable insights as we have spent hours analyzing user reviews online.

 Twilio

Let's start with Twilio. Twilio is built on WebRTC technology, allowing you to bring real-time communication to your app with Twilio Video SDK. This platform can integrate video chat with REST APIs and SDKs. Here are some details to help you understand more:

Twilio's SDK supports various programming languages like Java and Ruby, making it accessible to almost any developer to integrate into their applications.

With Twilio, developers can utilize web, iOS, and Android SDKs that allow multiple audio and video inputs. However, developers must manually configure them, which requires additional coding.

Twilio's call insights provide error tracking and analysis in case of call drops or errors. It supports 50 hosts within a call and 50 participants, including hosts. You can switch to Twilio Live for HLS streaming if you need to accommodate more participants. Sadly, Twilio doesn't offer any plugins for easy product development.

However, if you want a tailor-made solution using Twilio's service, they don't have any ready-made tools or plugins to facilitate a quick execution.

If your usage is high, then Twilio's pricing could go very expensive. Learn more about Twilio Video pricing.

 Dyte

Dyte is a video conferencing and voice SDK that enables developers to integrate high-quality live video and voice into their mobile, web, and desktop applications with minimal coding. Here are some unique features that make Dyte stand out from other video SDKs:

Automated audio/video management: Dyte's SDK offers audio/video publish and subscribe logic management out of the box, which means developers can focus on designing innovative features to enhance user retention.

Customizable live experiences: Developers can leverage Dyte's SDKs and UI kit components to create fully branded live experiences tailored to their product. The SDKs and UI kit components make it easy to create customized live events, regardless of coding experience.

Reliable Video Delivery: Dyte ensures that users' live videos always run smoothly, regardless of the network conditions. With intelligent bandwidth switching and minimal lag and frame drops, users are guaranteed a seamless experience every time.

Out-of-the-box features: Dyte's SDK offers rich chat, emoji reactions, whiteboard, and screen sharing to enhance users' live experiences. Developers can add even more features with Dyte's plugins to create an interactive and engaging event.

Cross-platform streaming: With Dyte's cross-platform streaming, developers can stream live events to millions of viewers across multiple platforms, including YouTube, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

Scalability: Dyte's technology ensures that live audio and video can scale from just a few users to over 10,000, streaming to millions of viewers with RTMP output. Dyte's SDK ensures that live events are scalable and reliable, regardless of the audience size.

 Dyte pricing

Dyte offers a usage-based pricing model that is affordable for businesses of all sizes. The service provides 10,000 free minutes of usage each month, and users are charged for each minute used, with different rates for different services.

The pricing is as follows:

$0.004 per user per minute for product pricing, $0.010 per minute for recordings, and $0.015 per minute for RTMP out.

Dyte provides an online cost estimator to help users estimate the cost of using their services. Dyte also provides 24/7 support to customers via various channels.

 Zoom Video SDK

Zoom Video SDK is a platform that empowers developers to build customized video-based applications using Zoom's technology. Unlike the traditional Zoom client, the SDK offers video stream, screen sharing, chat, and data streams as a service, giving developers the flexibility to pick and choose the features they want to use while building live in their app.

With server-side APIs and webhooks, developers have complete control over the Video SDK. Here are some points that best describe Zoom video SDK.

The Zoom Video SDK allows developers to create bespoke video layouts for up to 1,000 participants/co-hosts per session.

While customization is limited to in-session chat, screen sharing, third-party live streaming, and call layout management, the SDK offers complete control over the features developers want to use.

Additionally, only predetermined host and participant roles are allowed, making collaboration difficult when permission modifications are required.

 Daily

Daily is a video SDK platform that claims to simplify real-time video and audio call integration into web applications.

Here is a quick overview of Daily video SDK.

Daily offers two ways to build real-time video and audio calls - the Daily Client SDKs and the Daily Prebuilt. This nifty video chat widget can be seamlessly added to any web application with minimal code.

Daily provides basic collaborative features such as HD screen sharing, whiteboard, customizable text chat, and more to enhance the user experience.

A poor initial experience and the slow technical support process make using Daily slightly tricky.

The audio significantly deteriorates as the number of people on the call increase.

 EnableX

EnableX is a platform for developers, ISVs, SIs, and service providers to create live communication experiences using live video, voice, and messaging SDKs.

Here is a quick overview of the solution.

The platform has a low-code video builder that allows you to create custom video-calling solutions, live video streams, and a self-service portal with extensive reporting and live analytics.

However, users have expressed that EnableX needs to improve its code structure for more straightforward implementation.

Also, with limited UI customization, businesses have fewer branding opportunities.

 TokBox

TokBox's Video API offers customizable video solutions for embedding into applications or websites.

It offers many benefits for organizations that rely on video to conduct their business, but there are areas of improvement that the company can address to provide a better user experience. Here is a quick look at the platform.

Vonage Video [TokBox] provides video, voice, screen-sharing, signaling, and chat functionality for organizations that rely heavily on video to conduct their business.

However, users have reported that the TokBox Dashboard is challenging, and real-time user usage details are unavailable. Additionally, some users have experienced delivery issues in certain countries.

The platform does not handle the live video backend, so you must allocate engineers to build edge case management capabilities.

The platform supports a maximum of 55 participants per call.

The company provides chat-based support, which may take up to 72 hours to respond to your request.

Read more about TokBox pricing here.

 AWS Chime

Amazon Chime is a video conferencing tool built for business users on Amazon Web Services. It has various features such as VoIP calling, video messaging capabilities, and virtual meeting functionality, enabling users to participate in or host meetings remotely quickly.

Here is a quick overview of the platform.

Amazon Chime provides an interactive and immersive experience for individuals or groups with screen-sharing, remote desktop control, and text-based chat capabilities.

The SDK requires significant resources, including processing power and network bandwidth. Applications using the SDK may consume more resources than other applications, which can impact overall system performance.

The AWS Chime Video SDK supports both web and mobile platforms. However, there may be differences in the SDK's functionality or performance across different platforms. Developers need to ensure that the SDK is optimized for their target platforms.

Network connectivity issues can impact the performance of the AWS Chime Video SDK. Poor internet connectivity can result in audio and video quality degradation or buffering.

The customer support of Amazon Chime is inconsistent at times, and users report varying times for query resolution depending on the agent on the call.

 Mux

Mux is an API that allows developers to enhance their applications with live and on-demand video experiences while providing viewers with real-time streaming options. Here is a quick look at the Mux platform.

With Mux, video encoding, delivery, and renditions are simplified to ensure an optimal viewing experience on any device.

Developers can integrate Mux's SDK into their web-based, iOS-based, and Android-based applications to enable real-time video and live to stream with up to 100 participants in a WebRTC environment!

Although users have shared that Mux could improve its UI by offering better data representation with graphs and charts for report management.

The Mux Video SDK currently supports iOS, Android, and web platforms. If you need to support other platforms, such as desktops or smart TVs, you may need to consider a different SDK.

In some cases, developers have reported performance issues with the Mux Video SDK, such as slow video processing or poor audio quality. Various factors, including network connectivity and device hardware, can cause these issues.

 Jitsi

Jitsi is an open-source tool that empowers developers to add video conferencing capabilities to their applications. With Jitsi, you can initiate real-time video chats, collaborate with others, and share your screen.

Here is a quick overview of the features Jitsi has to offer.

Jitsi Videobridge is an XMPP server that supports hosting multiple video conferences and uses default encryption to ensure secure communication.

Jitsi Meet is accessible via web browsers and mobile apps for Android and iOS.

Jitsi provides end-to-end encryption, giving you complete control over the source code and tailoring it to your needs.

However, recording calls and live streaming to YouTube requires additional setup and configuration of Jibri.

Jitsi's scalability and video quality can be impacted by endpoint hardware and bandwidth consumption.

Jitsi is a free and open-source platform, but you must set up your servers and configure the user interface from scratch.

 Agora

Agora is one of the popular choices when looking to streamline video calls and live-streaming experiences. It offers a low-level solution for integrating live streaming and video calls into your websites and mobile applications.

Here is an overview of this platform.

Its features provide a good user experience for both audio and video, and its APIs and development tools can be easily integrated with your web services and applications.

With Agora's customizable options, you can easily cater to the entertainment industry's distribution needs. However, the platform's various options with similar titles can be confusing, and its software still has some glitches that may redirect users to the home page.

Nevertheless, developers prefer Agora for its robust live video SDK, and with the Premium pricing options, you can enjoy up to 2K+ video quality for your audience. If you're interested in delving deeper, we've written a comprehensive article on Agora pricing that provides an in-depth analysis.

The Agora Live Video SDK provides a set of pre-built features and functionality that may not meet all applications' specific needs.

Integrating the Agora Live Video SDK into an existing application can be complex, and developers may need to modify their codebase or architecture to accommodate the new functionality.

Some developers have reported that the documentation provided by Agora is not always clear or complete, making it challenging to troubleshoot issues or build custom functionality.

 What’s Next?

It is time to choose a video conferencing solution that delivers on its promises. Say goodbye to complex and time-consuming SDKs and hello to effortless live experiences in under 10 minutes.

With Dyte's user-friendly and intuitive interface, you can easily integrate video conferencing into your applications and websites without any hassle.

9 Best Jitsi Alternatives

Businesses are turning to video call and conference calls now more than ever. Jitsi has long been one of the solutions people consider when building live because of its low barrier to entry. The SDK is open source, making it very economical for users to get started.

However, many seek alternatives to Jitsi after integrating it into their apps since it offers a limited feature set, no collaborative elements, lacks support and has unreliable call quality.

And that's exactly what we talk about in this blog post. We review the nine best Jitsi alternatives available in 2023, so you can decide which suits your business needs. We'll explore each platform in-depth, from features and pricing to pros and cons.

Why look for a Jitsi Alternative?

Jitsi is a popular open-source video conferencing platform, but here are some of the limitations for Jitsi.

Limited Scalability: While suitable for small to medium-sized meetings, Jitsi can face challenges in larger-scale deployments with hundreds of participants. Scaling it for such scenarios can be complex and resource-intensive.

Security Concerns: Jitsi does consider privacy and security, but it's not immune to vulnerabilities. Regular updates and additional security measures may be necessary, especially for sensitive meetings.

UI Challenges: Some users find Jitsi's user interface less polished or intuitive compared to commercial alternatives, potentially impacting ease of use, especially for less tech-savvy individuals.

Lack of Advanced Features: Jitsi offers basic video conferencing features but may lack advanced capabilities such as Support for Multiple Audio I/O, Media Player, in-depth reporting, etc.

Documentation and Support: While there is community support and documentation available for Jitsi, it may not be as comprehensive or easily accessible as support provided by commercial vendors. Users might rely on forums and online resources for troubleshooting.

Server Management: Self-hosting Jitsi requires server infrastructure management, which could be a drawback for organizations lacking the technical expertise or developer bandwidth.

Now that we've discussed, why would someone building an scalable, user friendly and secure video interaction look for an alternative to Jitsi meet, let's learn what to look for in a Jitsi Alternative.

When it comes to choosing an alternative for Jitsi, you have a lot of options. You want something that offers reliable video conferencing capabilities, user-friendly features, and customization options. Here are some things to look out for when selecting an alternative:

Customization - How easily can you create a UI that resonates with your brand? Do you need to code it from scratch, or does the tool offer a no-code way of building it? Does the tool provider offer any sample applications or code that you can use as a base when creating your app? Look to understand these questions.

Support - See how quickly the support team is replying. Do they offer 24*7 support? See if they are available on the platform of your choice (Slack, call, chatbot, etc.).

Compatibility - Ensure you can integrate the SDK across all devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, etc. This will ensure an easier time for the developers when building live and allow for smooth communication between participants without technical glitches or lag time.

Security & Privacy - Ensure the product complies with any safety and privacy standards you need. Look for encryption, authentication, and data protection measures.

 Cons

Its low-level nature makes it hard to get familiar

The pricing structure can be complex and unsuitable for businesses with limited budgets

 Cons

Supports 50 viewers within a call

It doesn't offer plugins for ease of product development

It is very basic and only provides live video — no interactive elements like chat/reactions

Pricing is very complex to calculate on your own

 Twilio Video pricing

 Pros:

It does not require you to install an application to use it, but for mobile, we have installed an app.

The SDK is compatible with various platforms, including mobile and web, making building applications for multiple devices easy.

It encrypts voice, video, and signaling traffic using AES-128 or AES-256 encryption.

 Cons:

The platform doesn't take care of the live video backend, leaving you to invest resources in building edge case management capabilities.

It only supports 55 participants per call.

The company offers chat-based support that can take 72 hours to respond to your request.

Daily is a live video SDK that enables developers to build scalable real-time video and live streaming in their apps.

Daily provides two primary options for building real-time video and audio calls. The first is to utilize Daily Client SDKs, which allow for creating customized user interfaces by interacting with Daily's core APIs. The second is Daily Prebuilt, an embeddable video chat widget that can be integrated into any web application with just a few lines of code.

 Pros

Offers collaborative features like HD screen sharing, breakout rooms, raise a hand, live transcription, and whiteboard

Allows you to host interactive real-time calls with 1,000 people

Access logs around the event and media quality metrics from every client in every session

 Cons

Limited customization options

The project's mobile SDKs are still in beta, so it's uncertain how they will evolve and whether they can solve your use cases.

Support may take up to 72 hours to resolve your issues.

The tool can't manage users' live video interactions on its own. You need to add publish-subscribe logic to it.

The platform lacks edge case management capabilities.

 Daily pricing

10,000 free minutes refreshed per month

 Pros

It lets you conduct and attend online meetings with HD video/audio

It offers collaborative features like screen-sharing, remote desktop control, and individual/group text-based chats

It can host team meetings of up to 250 participants

 Cons

The platform solely permits recording audio content in .m4a format and doesn't provide an option to record attendees.

Additionally, session analytics are only available with the expensive enterprise plan.

Furthermore, the platform lacks edge case management capabilities, which may require additional effort.

 Cons

Issues with dropping off

Slows down the meeting

Switching between small and big rooms can be confusing

It only offers a basic set of collaborative features

 Whereby Pricing

Using the Mux API, developers can integrate live and on-demand video features into their applications. This tool facilitates the broadcasting of real-time sessions to millions of viewers through live streaming, followed by an immediate on-demand version after the session.

 Pros

Supports web, iOS, and Android SDKs

Volume discounts

 Cons

There is no built-in assistance available to manage interruptions during a video call.

No inbuilt collaborative features

No support for plugins

No prebuilt apps or UI — you need to build it from scratch

No interactive features built-in; you need to integrate another SDK for this

 Mux Pricing

One-time $20 in credits for new sign-ups

We've all embraced video calls, whether with our work colleagues or our doctor. It remains a challenge for developers to build real-time audio and video features into products.

You could use off-the-shelf meeting clients like Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet, but they're rigid and often don't cater to unique use cases. That's where Video Conferencing SDKs step in. Using them, you can build completely custom live experiences inside your product.

Daily is one such video SDK; the company provides developers with APIs to add video conferencing to their applications. Since being founded in 2015, it has amassed a customer list, including AppFolio, HotDoc, Pitch, Kumospace, and Teamflow.

Despite saying all that, it is far from being the perfect tool, and the platform is held back by legacy code and unintuitive developer experience.

If you're a Daily customer or want to try Daily, read this blog to understand what you might miss out on.

What to Look for in a Daily Alternative?

There is no point in using a video SDK solution that requires your developers to become video engineering experts. At that point, just build your own live video infra. That said, here are the key things to consider when choosing a video conferencing SDK for your business:

Reliable support: You should have access to customer support when you need it. Look, live video is hard. You will run into many roadblocks, and if every support request takes over 72 hours to fix, your time to market will be significantly delayed.

Customization: Your video SDK should offer varying levels of customization to ensure you can tailor the video conferencing experience to your specific needs. Whether you need a prebuilt user interface or want to create a custom UI/UX design, you should be able to do it quickly.

Scalability: The SDK platform should be able to grow with you. A few hundred people on a call? Done. 10,000 people? Sure. Stream to millions? Duh. Most SDKs handle vast volumes of people but at the cost of video/voice quality. Your chosen SDK should not.

Cost-effectiveness: You should expect a range of pricing structures that balance affordability with features and business needs.

Network management: The platform should automatically take care of the backend user network and device edge cases, giving you more time to build new features.

Jitsi

Dyte

Zoom

Agora

Twilio

EnableX

TokBox

AWS chime

Whereby

Mux

Below, we'll get an overview of the alternatives to Daily so you can make an informed decision for your business.

Please Note: Our reviews are based on extensive research and honest user feedback, so you can trust us to provide valuable insights as we have spent hours analyzing user reviews online.

 Jitsi

Jitsi is a set of free, open-source projects that provide flexible video conferencing services for individuals, teams, and organizations. It is best known for Jitsi Meet and Jitsi Videobridge.

Jitsi Meet is an end-client application similar to Zoom that lets you run video chats. You can share your screen, collaborate in real time, invite users, and more.

Jitsi Videobridge is an XMPP server capable of hosting thousands of video chats. It's compatible with WebRTC and offers encryption by default.

 Jitsi, in short:

Jitsi is free, open-source, and offers end-to-end encryption meaning you can review how the platform works and modify the code to fit your needs.

The live experience offers active speakers, text chatting (web only), room locking, screen sharing, raise/lower hand, push-to-talk mode, audio-only option, and more.

One major issue is its security. The platform does not provide adequate privacy and encryption for confidential business meetings, making it unsuitable for many organizations that need to keep their information safe.

You need ample storage space to store and save meeting data offline, and it can be a problem for businesses that hold multiple sessions daily and must keep their data safe and accessible.

Jitsi Meet is unsuitable for a broad audience, as it can only handle up to 200 attendees, and this can detract from the meeting and connection process for attendees over 75.

The platform does not support meetings lasting longer than three hours, making it inconvenient for large companies, organizations, webinars, and other institutions requiring extended appointments.

Lastly, the video and audio quality of Jitsi Meet is poor, which can result in a negative meeting experience for both attendees and hosts.

 Jisti pricing:

Jitsi is open-source and completely free to use. However, if you're a business in need of advanced features or technical support, you may want to consider third-party providers that offer commercial support for Jitsi.

The cost of commercial support may vary depending on your specific needs and the provider you choose.

 Dyte

Dyte is a powerful video conferencing platform for businesses and organizations.

Whether you're looking to conduct virtual meetings, host webinars, or provide remote customer support, Dyte has got you covered with its high-quality video and audio, customization options, scalability, easy integration, real-time collaboration, reliable customer support, and affordable pricing plans.

 Dyte, in short:

Here are some key benefits that make Dyte the top choice for businesses of all sizes:

High-quality video and audio: With Dyte's advanced technology, you can expect crystal-clear video and audio quality every time you connect with your team.

Customization: It understands that every business is unique and offers a high customization level. With Dyte, you can tailor the platform to your needs and requirements.

Scalability: Your communication needs grow as you scale your business. Fortunately, Dyte video SDK can accommodate up to 10,000 participants, making it an ideal solution for businesses of all sizes.

Easy integration: Dyte video SDK integrates seamlessly with your apps owing to its open APIs and production-ready sample apps.

Real-time collaboration: With Dyte video SDK, you can collaborate in real-time, share files, and work together seamlessly, no matter where your team is located.

Customer support: It offers reliable customer support, ensuring you can get help when needed.

So if you're looking for a comprehensive, customizable, and secure video conferencing platform that offers high-quality video and audio, scalability, easy integration, real-time collaboration, and reliable customer support, look no further than Dyte video conferencing SDK.

 Dyte pricing:

Dyte video SDK offers affordable pricing options, with free 10,000 minutes that refresh every month. Once you exhaust these, pricing starts at just $0.004 per user per minute, with recordings and RTMP-out options available at a considerably low rate of $0.010 and $0.015 per minute, respectively.

 Zoom Video SDK

The Zoom Video SDK helps build custom live video-based applications powered by Zoom's technology.

The Video SDK was introduced when Zoom realized that the classic client couldn't serve many customer use cases, and customers would notice more benefits if they could just access the tech behind Zoom.

The SDK provides many services, including video, audio, screen sharing, chat, and data streams. You can build with all of these features or pick and choose, and it also has full server-side APIs and webhooks.

 Zoom Video SDK, in short:

With the Video SDK, you can build customizable video compositions with up to 1,000 co-hosts/participants per session.

Zoom offers limited customization to the live video, and it only lets you add screen sharing, third-party live streaming, and in-session chat to the call and manage its layout.

It supports seven languages and provides open translation extensibility, opening any app to international growth and improved user experience.

It only allows the use of predetermined roles of a host and participant and may pose difficulties for use cases requiring modified permissions for peers.

You only get lagged and delayed email support unless you pay for the support plans.

The SDK only partially helps manage the user's bandwidth consumption in case of network degradation.

 Zoom Video SDK pricing:

Zoom offers 10,000 free minutes every month, and you must pay only after consuming them. The Zoom video SDK pricing starts at $0.0035 per user minute, with recordings costing $100 per month for 1 TB of storage and telephony at $100 per month.

Zoom offers three customer support plans: Access, Premier, and Premier+. Pricing for these plans has to be obtained by contacting them directly.

 Agora

Agora's video calling SDK comes stocked with features like embedded voice and video chat, real-time recording, live streaming, and instant messaging so developers can create live in-app experiences.

 Agora, in short:

Besides the video SDK, Agora offers add-ons like AR facial masks, sound effects, whiteboards, and other features, for an additional cost.

Its SD-RTN offers good global coverage, connecting people from over 200 countries and regions with ultra-low latency streaming capabilities.

The pricing structure can be complex and unfit for businesses having limited budgets.

Additionally, users seeking hands-on support may need patience as Agora's support team may take time to assist.

 Agora pricing:

It offers Premium and Standard pricing options, with the total usage duration for audio and video calculated at the end of each month. Video usage is classified into four types based on resolution and is priced accordingly.

The Pricing offers Audio for $0.99/1,000 participant minutes, HD Video for $3.99/1,000 participant minutes, and Full HD Video for $8.99/1,000 participant minutes.

If you're interested in delving deeper, we've written a comprehensive article on Agora pricing that provides an in-depth analysis.

 Twilio Video

Twilio is one the leading video SDK solutions helping businesses add live video to their mobile and web apps.

The advantage of using Twilio is that you can create an app from scratch or add communication features to an existing solution.

 Twilio Video, in short:

It provides web, iOS, and Android SDKs. When using multiple audio and video inputs, devs must manually configure them, for which they have to write extra code.

If users' call drops or face any issues, you can use Twilio's call insights to track and analyze the errors. Developers need to write extra code for this too.

As your usage grows, pricing can become a concern. Unfortunately, Twilio doesn't have a tiering system built into the dashboard.

It supports 50 hosts within a call and 50 participants, including hosts.

Twilio doesn't offer any plugins for ease of product development.

The Twilio Video SDK is a popular option for integrating video chat, but it may not offer the level of customization some developers need. Also, writing all that code.

 Twilio Video pricing:

Its pricing starts at $4 per 1,000 minutes, with recordings costing $0.004 per participant minute, recording compositions for $0.01 per composed minute, and $0.00167 GB/day for storage after the first 10 GBs.

Read more about Twilio Video pricing.

 EnableX

EnableX SDK offers video and audio calls with collaborative features like a whiteboard, screen share, annotate, recording, host control, and chat.

The SDK offers a video builder to deploy custom video-calling solutions into your application. It lets you build custom live video streams with tailor-made UI, hosting, billing, and other core functionalities.

 EnableX, in short:

You can access its self-service portal, which provides reporting capabilities and live analytics to track quality and leverage online payments from clients.

The SDK supports limited coding languages: Javascript, PHP, and Python.

It lets your users stream live directly from your app/site or on YouTube/Facebook for an unlimited reach.

The support team can take up to 72 hours to respond to your help request, which can be prohibitive for some users.

 EnableX pricing:

EnableX pricing starts at $0.004 per minute per participant for rooms with up to 50 people, and if you need to host larger meetings or events, you can contact its sales team for custom pricing options.

It also offers a recording option for $0.010 per minute per participant. In addition, you can transcode your video into a different format for $0.010 per minute, and if you need extra storage or RTMP streaming, you can get it for $0.05 per GB per month and $0.10 per minute, respectively.

 TokBox

Despite their acquisition by Vonage and subsequent renaming as the "Vonage API," the industry still refers to them as TokBox or OpenBox.

Its SDKs allow for reliable point-to-point communication, making it an option to consider for establishing proof of concepts for hackathons or meeting investor deadlines.

 TokBox, in short:

The SDK lets you build custom audio/video streams with effects, filters, and AR/VR on mobile devices. It supports use cases ranging from 1:1 video, group video chat, or large-scale broadcast sessions. The calls can be video and voice, voice-only, or mixed.

In the call, participants can share screens, send data, and exchange messages between all participants via chat.

One of the main challenges is overcoming scaling costs — as your user base grows, so does the price per stream per minute, making it an expensive option as your application thrives. For example, three broadcasts lasting 30 minutes with 100 subscribers each can cost up to $810.99 per month.

TokBox's extra features, such as recording and interactive broadcast, also come at an additional cost, and after 2,000 connections, the platform switches to CDN delivery, resulting in higher latency.

Additionally, it struggles with real-time streaming at scale, as anything over 3,000 viewers requires switching to HLS, which, again, adds significant latency.

 TokBox pricing:

OpenTok utilizes a usage-based pricing model determined by the number of participants in a video session, which is dynamically calculated every minute. Their pricing plans start from $9.99 per month and include a free allowance of 2,000 minutes per month across all plans. Once this free allowance has been consumed, users are charged $0.00395 per participant/minute. Recording starts at $0.010 per minute, while HLS streaming incurs a charge of $0.003 per minute.

Read more about TokBox pricing.

 Amazon Chime

Amazon Chime SDK is the tech behind Amazon Chime but without its shell.

 Amazon Chime, in short:

Amazon Chime SDK allows just 25 participants (if participants are on mobile, then 50) to join a video meeting.

Thanks to the simulcast, your application can upload multiple versions of the video stream. In other words, your video quality remains consistent across various devices and networks.

Amazon Chime SDK encrypts all calls, videos, and chats.

It lacks valuable features like polling, auto-sync with Google Calendar, and a background blur effect.

It doesn't work well in a Linux environment. Based on user reviews, Chime faces difficulties if participants use the Safari browser.

Moreover, customers who require support from Amazon Chime may encounter inconsistencies in their experience. Users have reported that query resolution times vary depending on the customer support agent on the call, making the overall customer support experience unpredictable.

 Amazon Chime pricing:

The free basic plan allows users to access one-on-one audio/video calls and group chats.

The Plus plan is priced at $2.50 per monthly user and includes additional features such as screen sharing, remote desktop control, 1 GB of message history per user, and Active Directory integration.

The Pro plan, priced at $15 per user per month, includes all of the Plus plan features and enables meetings for three or more people.

 Whereby

Whereby is a simple, user-friendly video conferencing platform offering basic small- to medium-sized meeting features. However, the platform may not be suitable for larger businesses or those requiring more advanced features.

 Whereby, in short:

The tool lets you customize the video interface across logos, colors, and buttons with their no-code interface editor. But the customizations are elementary, and you can't make a completely custom experience with Whereby.

It lets you offer video calls anywhere — from your website and mobile apps to web products — without opening external links or apps.

While Whereby offers a seamless video conferencing experience, it may not have all the bells and whistles other video conferencing tools do. The platform has a maximum capacity of 50 participants.

It may also lack advanced features, such as screen sharing for mobile users. While you can personalize your video conferencing room, customization options for the host interface may be limited.

Unfortunately, Whereby does not offer a virtual background feature, which may be a downside for users looking to add some fun to their calls. Some users have also reported issues with the mobile app, which may impact the overall user experience.

 Whereby pricing:

Whereby offers a pricing model that starts at $9.99 per month, which includes up to 2,000 user minutes, renewed monthly.

After the allocated minutes are consumed, an additional charge of $0.004 per minute is applicable. The platform also provides cloud recording and live streaming options, which are charged at $0.01 per minute.

Email and chat support are free for all accounts, ensuring that users can get the necessary assistance whenever required. Technical onboarding, customer success management, and HIPAA compliance are additional features for paid support plans.

 Mux

Mux is an API-first platform that helps developers create video streaming and analytics experiences in their apps.

It aims to make users' videos look beautiful, no matter where or how they are viewed.

 Mux, in short:

The SDK lets you embed real-time video and live streams in your application. You can add live video across web, iOS, and Android SDKs-based applications.

Each call supports up to 100 participants in a real-time WebRTC environment with their video on.

You can get advanced video analytics using Mux Data — a separate offering that lets you dive deep into how your users consume content.

It doesn't offer collaborative features like some top competitors, so you're missing out on the opportunity to engage your audience and work with your team in real time.

Mux makes managing video call disruptions difficult because you may feel like you're on your own. The SDK offers no in-built support to help you navigate these challenges, leaving you to deal with disruptions and downtime alone.

 Mux pricing:

For new sign-ups, the platform provides a one-time $20 credit.

After that, they charge $0.004 per minute for real-time video, $0.04 per minute for encoding, $0.003 per minute for storage, and $0.0012 per minute for streaming.

Simulcast is available at $0.02 per minute, and auto-generated captions are available at $0.024 per minute after the initial 6,000 minutes.

 Wrapping Up

When choosing the best video SDK solution, you should look for a reliable and user-friendly video collaboration tool to help take your business to the next level. Mux is one of the platforms that enables developers to build live and on-demand video experiences in its apps, but it can be costly, and its features are somewhat limited.

This list features some of the most reliable and flexible options available.

What to Look for in an Alternative for Mux?

Here are some of the crucial things to consider when you are out looking for a Mux alternative:

SDK Capabilities: Look for a streaming platform that offers capabilities such as cross-browser compatibility and custom video layouts.

Unique Features: Find one with special features, such as audio-only calling or recording capabilities that add value to your live streams.

Interactive Elements: Consider whether the platform has interactive features like chat, screen-sharing, and on-screen comments or captions.

Streaming Quality: Ensure the streaming quality is high and reliable with no latency issues, even if the network fluctuates.

Integrations: Check that the platform offers open APIs that make it easy for you to integrate it with your app and various social media/online platforms for maximum reach.

Pricing: Review pricing plans to ensure they are within your budget.

UX: See if the SDK offers easy-to-use UI elements you can pick and stitch together to quickly build the user interface for your live experience.

Support: Lastly, please ensure the platform offers excellent customer support if you need help with any issues.

By looking out for these features in a Mux alternative, you can rest assured that you'll find the best solution for your live streaming needs. A suitable streaming platform can help you boost your live video's performance and reach, so consider all these factors before deciding.

The Top 10 Alternatives to Mux

There are the top 10 alternatives to Mux including Dyte, Zoom Video SDK, Agora, Twilio, EnableX, Vonage Video, AWS Chime SDK, Whereby, Daily WebRTC and Restream.

Let's talk about that offer their unique features, advantages and pricing for each of them.

Dyte

Zoom Video SDK

Agora

Twilio

Enablex

Vonage Video

AWS Chime

Whereby

Daily WebRTC

Restream

Reviews of Mux alternatives for building live video call experiences in your product

Below we'll review each alternative solution to give you a better overview of Mux's competitors and their pricing. All reviews highlight our findings and the considerations of real users.

 Dyte

Dyte is an alternative to Mux for running large-scale live streams online. It offers powerful features and a simple setup process, and its capabilities include adaptive streaming, multi-bitrate streaming, and transcoding.

Dyte offers developer-friendly live video conferencing SDKs that enable you to effortlessly integrate 1:1 calls, group calls, and webinars into your platform. Because of its low-code approach and user-friendly documentation, one can go live with fewer lines of code. It supports live classes, telemedicine, online fitness, remote employment, social gatherings, dating, and B2B sales use cases.

Pros:

The SDK offers extensive collaborative features out of the box

It is super easy to integrate your product with its open APIs

It provides detailed analytics on video call metrics

It lets you do cross-platform streaming across YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, and more with RTMP built-in the platform

Participants have almost no voice and video lag, so they may readily communicate with one another

The SDK barely weighs ~200 KB GZIP, which makes it super easy on your user's network and their devices

The team offers free 24*7 support at the channel of your choice — email, Slack, Discord, and more

You can easily use the ready-made plugins available to make the user's streaming experience interactive

Cons:

Currently, the SDK can support a maximum of 25 active speakers. However, the Dyte team is still working on upgrading these minor drawbacks

Pricing:

10,000 free minutes every month

$0.001/min/user for Voice Conferencing

$0.004/min/user for Video Conferencing

Dyte is well known for its ease of use, customer support, feature set, design, pricing, benefits, and community. With Dyte, you can be sure of a flexible streaming solution tailored to your needs and budget, with excellent customer support if any issues arise. Get the most out of your live streams today. Dyte offers secure streaming and encryption, ensuring your content is safe and private.

 Zoom Video SDK

Zoom Video SDK helps you add live video to your app backed by the servers and technology of Zoom. The SDK provides video, audio, screen sharing, chat, data streams, and more as a service. You can build with all of these features or pick and choose. The Video SDK also has full server-side APIs and webhooks.

Pros:

Build customizable video compositions

Host up to 1,000 co-hosts/participants per session

It supports seven major languages and provides open translation extensibility which opens any app to international growth and improved user experience

Stream your meetings/webinars on Facebook

Cons:

Doesn’t offer prebuilt UI kits to ease development

You need to pay hundreds of dollars to get support from an actual real human being

Restrictive to video calls—no audio calling possible

No interactive features like polls, emoticons, and whiteboard

Expensive subscriptions and add ons

HD video is not the Standard quality

Limited customization to the live video

The SDK only allows the use of predetermined roles of a host and participant

Pricing:

10,000 minutes free every month

$0.35/min/user for Video Conferencing

Recordings $100 per month for 1 TB of storage

Telephony at $100 per month

 Agora

Agora provides a Real-time Engagement Platform as a Service (RTE PaaS). The SDK provider wants to allow anybody to communicate with anyone, in any application, at any time, and from any location. Its platform provides developers with APIs enabling them to embed real-time video and voice engagement experiences into their products.

Pros:

Agora uses its own priority networking, and the service quality is much superior to Mux

Additional functions include cloud recording and live broadcasting

Cons:

It is tough to absorb documentation rapidly. To grasp the whole context, you may need to reread multiple times. Some information is scattered across several pages

You need to consider different pricing for just about everything— video, voice, whiteboard, or plugins. It charges for everything separately, which makes pricing considerably complex

Actual code may behave differently than the documentation indicates. To cover edge scenarios, a lot of black-box testing is required

The SDKs are really basic, and a lot of manual plumbing or copy-pasting is required for a basic example to function

Poor Slack assistance from the Agora staff; responses frequently take days

Higher-resolution streams become significantly more expensive

To add chat or message passing, you must combine two independent items

Pricing:

$0.0009 /min/user for Voice Conferencing

$0.0039 /min/user for HD Video Conferencing

$0.0089 /min/user for Full HD Video Conferencing

If you're interested in delving deeper, we've written a comprehensive article on Agora pricing that provides an in-depth analysis.

 Twilio Live

Twilio is gaining traction as an alternative to Mux for live video. It provides businesses with a wide range of attractive features, such as the ability to embed audio and video into applications, real-time access analytics, and secure data with end-to-end encryption.

Pros:

Twilio Video SDK is designed to integrate easily with any web or mobile application

The highly scalable platform allows applications to handle thousands of users without issues

Twilio Video SDK works seamlessly across multiple platforms, including the web, iOS, and Android

It features a dashboard to track and analyze errors

Cons:

Supports a maximum of 50 hosts within a call

Doesn't offer any plugins for ease of product development

Developers need to spend a lot of time to integrate it since the documentation is old and support is non-existent

No UI elements available — build everything from scratch

Embed multiple SDKs just to create a basic live experience

RTMP streaming isn't available, and you need to sort out HLS separately

Pricing:

$0.004/min/user for Video Conferencing

Recordings cost starts at $0.004/min + recording compositions at $0.01/min

 Enablex

Enablex is another alternative to Mux for video streaming. It provides features such as scalability, low-latency video, and real-time analytics. It allows businesses to customize their individual usage plans to fit their needs and budget. Additionally, it offers streaming services with low latency, so viewers don't experience buffering or lagging issues.

Pros:

It is straightforward to use the API

You can use its visual building to customize your video meeting UI — add logos, play with colors, and experiment with different UI elements

Control user access with moderated entry, room lock, floor access control, and viewer role. All video/audio signals are also encrypted

EnableX helps in implementing the Cordova plugin for both iOS and Android

Cons:

The issue with using web-based API in terms of video quality and user interface

The support can take over 72 hours to respond

The pricing can get out of hand very quickly

Pricing:

$0.004/min/user for up to 50 participants/room

For pricing with over 50 participants, you need to contact its sales team

Recording at $0.10/min/user

Transcoding at $0.10/min

Storage at $0.05/GB/month

RTMP streaming costs $0.10/min

 Vonage Video

TokBox (now known as Vonage Video SDK) is another alternative for Mux. It runs on root servers on a small scale and can be quickly scaled to meet the demands of organizations, national data centers, or ISPs.

Pros:

The SDK lets you build custom audio/video streams with effects, filters, and AR/VR on mobile devices. It supports use cases ranging from 1:1 video, group video chat, or large-scale broadcast sessions

The SDK offers performance data through the account dashboard or its insights API

It encrypts all voice, video, and signaling traffic with AES-128 or AES-256 encryption

Cons:

Due to its complexity, it requires significant technical expertise to set up and use TokBox

Video conferences can accommodate up to 25 users, which can be a problem if you plan to invite a large number of participants or live stream

The SDK doesn't let you configure live video calls

You can't add more features on top of live video because the platform doesn't offer plugins or allow you to integrate with third-party services easily

The support takes a while (sometimes over 72 hours for a reply), and you can only reach out reliably via email

Pricing:

Plans start at $9.99/month (plus taxes & fees as applicable), with 2,000 minutes included in all plans. $ 0.00395 per participant / per minute after the 2,000 minutes are consumed

 AWS Chime

Amazon Chime is an Amazon Web Services communications service with a VoIP solution. Amazon Chime is a pay-as-you-go service that can be used for online meetings, video conferencing, and business calls.

Amazon Chime Voice Connector is a service that transmits voice communications over the internet and scales to meet capacity requirements as part of Amazon Chime. Users can remove fixed telephone network costs and simplify voice network administration by moving their voice network to the AWS Cloud.

Pros:

Uses AWS Identity and Access Management policies for security

Includes collaborative features like screen-sharing

Using the SDK, you can chat with people inside and outside of your organization

The SDK offers simulcast — which lets the user’s device pick up the resolution best suited for their network

Amazon Chime SDK encrypts all the calls, videos, and chats

Cons:

It can host up to 25 participants only (50 on mobile)

It lacks some useful features like polling, auto-sync with Google Calendar, and a background blur effect

It doesn’t work well in a Linux environment

Supports audio recording content only in .m4a format

The pricing can get out of control very quickly as you scale

Pricing:

Free tier: Includes one-on-one audio and video calls and group chat

Plus tier: $2.50/user/month

Pro tier: $15/user/month

 Whereby

Whereby is another alternative to Mux. It provides browser-based permanent rooms, hybrid setups, interactive whiteboards, and support for up to 50 participants. Additionally, Whereby offers audio/video streaming and recording capabilities so users can broadcast and capture their sessions. Furthermore, it has a built-in chat feature allowing users to communicate during meetings.

Pros:

No need to install a client to manage calls

Good stability and audio quality

GDPR compliant

Cons:

Very basic video customizations

Issues with dropping off

Switching between small and big rooms can be confusing

Pricing:

Free: Supports up to 4 participants and 1 room

Pro: $9.99/month with up to 12 participants and three rooms

Business: Starting with $59.99/month with up to 12 participants and multiple users and team rooms

 Daily WebRTC

Daily WebRTC offers features such as cross-browser compatibility and custom video layouts. It also supports up to 10,000 participants in a single call and does not require users to download any software to their devices to use it so that it can be used across different platforms easily.

Pros:

Supports native mobile libraries

Offers collaborative features like HD screen sharing, breakout rooms, and more

Access logs around an event and media quality metrics

APIs are available for Javascript, Flutter, iOS, and Android platforms

You can monitor call performance and user engagement by examining logs and analytics.

Cons

Incertitude regarding the future codecs

The project’s mobile SDK is still in development

Support can take time to resolve issues

Costly video recording cost.

Pricing

10,000 free minutes/month

$0.004/min/user for the video

$0.015/min for RTMP output

$ 0.01349/min for cloud recording

 Restream

Restream allows you to broadcast to over 30 social media platforms from one screen, and it's an upcoming competitor of Mux. It enables you to start the live stream directly from your browser without using third-party programs, schedule a pre-recorded video to be played anytime, and invite remote guests from any location to your live stream.

Pros:

Restream offers a forever-free plan

You can use Restream to upload and broadcast pre-recorded videos

Restream includes a talking function to enhance video engagement with chat discussions

The analytics engine tracks all essential metrics to provide insights into your streaming channels, viewership, followers, and chats

Cons:

Users need to pay $49 per month to get full HD streaming

Restream does not support 2K and 4K video streaming

The number of pre-recorded films you can store and the duration and size of each upload are limited

Pre-recorded video streaming is only available to users on the professional plan or higher

Priority customer service is only available to company users on the Premium and Business programs

Pricing:

$16 per month for Standard Plan

$41 per month for a Professional Plan

 Final Verdict

Real-time video has become an integral part of any organization's operations. It's no secret that video significantly enhances communication, improves collaboration, and drives engagement. However, an increasing number of organizations realize that off-the-shelf video conferencing tools like Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams do not satiate their use cases and need to look for a video conferencing SDK.

Vonage's Video API - TokBox is one solution organizations look at for a video SDK. And although TokBox claims to be a complete Video confereing SDK, it is far from perfect and has its fair share of drawbacks.

For example, the Vonage docs are not up to par compared to some emerging video SDK solutions like Dyte. Moreover, there is a significant lack of plugins in TokBox, further adding to the concerns of users.

If you're still relying on TokBox for your live video needs, it's time to consider the advantages other platforms can bring to your business. We discuss many such platforms in this blog.

What to look for in a TokBox (Opentok) alternative?

Modern-day business owners always look to up their game and incorporate live video into their operations. Building a live video app can be intimidating, especially with complex standalone SDKs. But we've got your back!

Here are some things you should consider when searching for a TokBox alternative:

Added Features: Your current SDK might lack unique features like customizable live experiences, prebuilt UI kit components, and cross-platform streaming. While looking at alternative SDKs, consider a solution that can help you tap into fully branded live experiences tailored to your brand in many ways, leaving you with a competitive advantage.

Analytical Capabilities: A powerful video SDK should come equipped with analytical tools in its arsenal to assess the quality of your videos. You should be able to integrate data-driven strategies into your workflows seamlessly. It must give you accurate video call data across different metrics, enabling you to track the success of your live videos and better understand your users' habits.

Engagement Options: Engaging with your audience is paramount; therefore, ensure your SDK gives you access to rich chat, screen sharing, text sharing, whiteboard, emojis, and more. A suitable SDK should offer plugins to make your engagements more fruitful.

Network management: You shouldn't worry about hard coding the different edge cases that can disrupt a video call while building live in your product. It should be the platform that automatically takes care of the backend, leaving you with more time to focus on improving your product and its offerings.

With so many video SDKs on the market, it can be overwhelming to decide on the right one.

We've done the research to round up the top TokBox alternatives worth your consideration. So keep reading to discover the perfect video SDK to supercharge your business with reliable live video capabilities.

Here is a List of the Top 10 TokBox Alternatives

Now that we've assessed TokBox (OpenTok) limitations and what to look for in a Jitsi alternative, let's checkout Top 10 TokBox (OpenTok or Vonage) Alternatives including Dyte, Jitsi, Agora, Zoom Video SDK, Twilio, EnableX, Daily, AWS Chime, Mux and Whereby.

Let's take a deep dive into features, limitations and pricing for each of these Tokbox Alternatives:

Jitsi

Dyte

Agora

Zoom Video SDK

Twilio

EnableX

Daily

AWS chime

Mux

Whereby

It is time to plunge into live video-calling experiences and discover some of the finest alternatives to TokBox (Opentok).

In this section, we will take a panoramic view of each solution and compare them to TokBox to help you make an informed decision for your business.

Our reviews are based on extensive research and honest user feedback, so you can trust us to provide valuable insights as you explore the world of video SDK solutions like never before!

 Jitsi

Jitsi is an open-source collection of projects that provides tools to create and implement video conferencing solutions within applications. Jitsi Meet is a client-side JavaScript application that allows real-time video chats, collaboration, and screen sharing.

The platform also includes Jitsi Videobridge, an XMPP server (Prosody) that supports hosting multiple video conferences.

Jitsi Videobridge uses WebRTC technology that provides default encryption. Users can access Jitsi Meet through web browsers or Android/iOS apps. It is a free and open-source platform that allows end-to-end encryption, allowing users to inspect and modify the code to meet their needs.

However, if you wish to record calls, you need some additional setup. If you want to live stream your conference to YouTube and access the recording there, you must manually configure Jibri.

Scalability in terms of participation is also an added disadvantage for Jitsi users. The platform seems inadequate, and the tools still need to optimize end-point hardware to deliver stable video quality.

Other minor issues in the platform include jitters or fluctuations during screen sharing or text sharing due to a lot of bandwidth consumption by the platform.

 Jitsi pricing:

Jitsi is an open-source platform granting users unrestricted usage and development capabilities. As a user, you have complete control over how the platform is used, and it can adapt to your unique requirements.

However, to use Jitsi, you must obtain your servers and configure your user interface from scratch. Furthermore, you must pay an additional fee if you require product support.

 Dyte

Dyte provides a live video conferencing and voice SDK enabling developers to seamlessly integrate customized, secure, high-quality live video into web, mobile, and desktop applications with minimal code.

One of Dyte's significant advantages is the automated audio/video publish and subscribe logic management, which allows developers to focus on designing innovative features that enhance user retention. Here are some of the core features offered by Dyte:

Dyte's SDK offers features, including customizable live experiences with core SDKs and prebuilt UI kit components, dependable video quality, interactive features, effortless integration, comprehensive analytics, cross-platform streaming, and seamless scaling.

Developers can leverage Dyte's SDKs and UI kit components to create fully branded live experiences tailored to their product. The SDKs and UI kit components simplify creating customized live events at scale.

Its advanced technology ensures that users' live videos always run smoothly, regardless of the network conditions. With intelligent bandwidth switching and minimal lag and frame drops, users are guaranteed a seamless experience every time.

The video SDK offers out-of-the-box features like chat, emoji reactions, whiteboard, and multi-screen sharing to enhance users' live experiences. Developers can add even more features with Dyte's plugins to create an interactive and engaging experience.

The SDK supports multiple platforms, including Flutter, Android (Java/Kotlin), iOS (Objective-C/Swift), React Native, and Javascript Core SDK for mobile and Electron for desktop. Plus, UI Kit for React JS, Angular, and Web Components for other platforms.

It provides detailed analytics on video call metrics like participant interactions and duration, allowing developers to make data-driven decisions to improve the video call quality.

Developers can easily embed live video into their products using Dyte's top-tier API support and one-click configuration. Dyte's SDK makes integrating live video into mobile devices, web browsers, and desktop applications easy.

With its cross-platform streaming, developers can stream live events to thousands of viewers across multiple platforms, including YouTube, LinkedIn, and Facebook. The built-in RTMP makes it easy to reach audiences wherever they are.

Dyte's technology ensures that live audio and video can scale from just a few users to over 10,000 users with RTMP output. And the SDK provides that live events are scalable and reliable, regardless of the audience size.

 Dyte pricing:

Dyte pricing model is based on usage. It offers 10,000 free minutes of usage each month. After that, users are charged for each minute used, with different rates for different services.

It charges $0.004 per user per minute for product pricing, $0.010 per minute for recordings, and $0.015 per minute for RTMP out.

To estimate the cost of using Dyte, you can use its online cost estimator on the pricing page. Dyte also provides 24/7 support to customers via various channels, including essential queries, technical support, and assistance with significant events.

We recently wrote a blog about Tokbox's (Opentok) pricing plans and how it differentiates from Dyte's pricing.

 Agora

Agora is a flexible SDK that implements real-time video and audio communication in web and mobile applications.

It is widely used in various industries, including video distribution, live gaming, e-sports, voice chat, IoT, video chat, social networking services (SNS), contact centers, and more. It also provides customization options to meet specific entertainment-related distribution needs.

Its ultra-low latency streaming capabilities deliver an ultra-fast live video streaming experience with a latency of 400ms or less. Its advanced algorithms monitor the live video streaming network in real-time and automatically select the most efficient routing path.

But not all’s rainbows and clouds in the world of Agora. It offers a complex pricing structure — unsuitable for businesses with limited budgets — and lackluster support. Agora's staff will make you want to switch if you prefer a more hands-on approach when needing help.

 Agora pricing:

The total audio and video usage duration across all projects under the Agora account is calculated at the end of each month. After deducting the 10,000 free monthly minutes, the remaining use is multiplied by its corresponding unit price to determine the monthly cost.

The basic formula to calculate the monthly cost is,

Monthly cost = audio minutes x audio unit price + video minutes of each type x video unit price of each type.

Premium pricing ($/1,000 participant minutes): Audio - $0.99, HD Video - $3.99, Full HD Video - $8.99

Standard pricing ($/1,000 participant minutes): Audio - $0.59, HD Video - $1.99, Full HD Video - $4.59

If you're interested in delving deeper, we've written a comprehensive article on Agora pricing that provides an in-depth analysis.

 Zoom SDK

The Zoom Video SDK allows developers to create custom video-based applications using Zoom's platform. The SDK was introduced to provide customers with access to the technology behind Zoom because the classic client was unfit for many customer use cases.

The Video SDK delivers video, audio, screen sharing, chat, and data streams as a service, allowing developers to select the features they want to use. In addition, the Video SDK comes with server-side APIs and webhooks, providing complete control to developers.

With the Zoom Video SDK, developers can create custom video layouts for up to 1,000 participants/co-hosts per session. However, customization is limited to in-session chat, screen sharing, third-party live streaming, and call layout management.

Other drawbacks of this popular SDK include limited in-session screen sharing, unstable third-party live streaming, and a lack of proper call layout management. Moreover, it only allows the predetermined host and participant roles, which makes collaboration difficult when you need to modify permission for peers.

 Zoom SDK pricing:

Zoom offers 10,000 free minutes every month, with pricing starting at $0.0035 per user minute after that. Recordings cost $100 per month for 1TB of storage, and telephony costs $100 per month. It offers three customer support plans: Access, Premier, and Premier+.

 Twilio Video

Twilio is a communication platform providing developers with various APIs to build business communication solutions across multiple channels.

Its SDK supports different programming languages, such as Java and Ruby, making it accessible to almost any developer to integrate into their applications.

Twilio provides web, iOS, and Android SDKs allowing multiple audio and video inputs. However, developers must manually configure them, requiring additional coding. Twilio's call insights provide error tracking and analysis in case of call drops or errors, but it's solely fundamental.

Twilio supports 50 hosts within a call and 50 participants, including hosts. You can switch to Twilio Live for HLS streaming if you need to accommodate more participants. Unfortunately, Twilio doesn't offer any plugins for easy product development.

However, it's important to note that some features are unavailable in Twilio Video SDK. For example, features like screen share, chat, whiteboard, and plugins are unavailable. Additionally, if you're looking for in-depth analytics to track user engagement and performance, be prepared to pay extra charges.

 Twilio Video pricing:

Twilio's pricing starts at $4 per 1,000 minutes, with additional costs for recordings, recording compositions, and storage. Its free support plan offers API status notifications and email support during business hours.

Additional support services, including 24/7 live chat support, support escalation line, quarterly status review, and guaranteed response times, are available for a fee based on the support plan, usually a percentage of the monthly plan or a certain minimum amount (ranging from $250/month to $5,000/month).

You can find more details about Twilio Video pricing.

 EnableX

EnableX is a communication platform offering live video, voice, and messaging SDKs to enable developers, independent software vendors (ISVs), system integrators (SIs), and service providers to create live experiences.

This platform allows users to save time and avoid the complexities of building and maintaining network infrastructure while accessing a scalable and secure communication solution.

It includes a low-code video builder for custom video-calling solutions, live video streams, and a self-service portal that provides extensive reporting and live analytics.

However, like any platform, it has a few drawbacks to consider. Many online reviews point out that:

EnableX should have a better code structure so users can efficiently implement it.

It only has a few options for customizing the user interface compared to other platforms.

There is a lack of branding options, which could be a dealbreaker for companies looking to establish their brand identity.

It could improve its documentation. While it's good, it could be more structured and include sample code in one place to simplify implementation.

 Enablex pricing:

EnableX operates on a usage-based pricing model of $0.004 per participant minute for rooms with up to 50 participants, with pricing available for over 50 participants upon contacting the sales team.

Additional charges include recording at $0.010 per participant per minute, transcoding at $0.010 per minute, storage at $0.05 per GB per month, and RTMP streaming at $0.010 per minute.

 Daily

Daily is a platform that offers an SDK for developers to easily integrate real-time video and audio calls into their web applications. The SDK provides a simplified development process by handling common backend video call use cases for different platforms.

There are two methods for building real-time video and audio calls with Daily:

Daily Client SDKs — offering core APIs for custom user interface creation

Daily Prebuilt — an embeddable video call widget that can be easily added to any web application with minimal code.

Daily supports Native iOS and Android mobile libraries that enable real-time video and audio integration. The platform also provides collaborative features such as HD screen sharing, breakout rooms, raise a hand, live transcription, whiteboard, and customizable text chat to enhance the user experience.

Daily users often complain of poor video quality when using the SDK on unstable networks due to the lack of network management capabilities offered by Daily, which developers themselves must implement. Additionally, developing the user interface can be time-consuming as there are no readily available sample applications or UI kits. The SDK provider does not offer plugins to extend the functionality of the SDK, and support may not be readily available unless paid for.

 Daily pricing:

Daily's pricing model starts at $0.004 per participant minute, with 10,000 free monthly refreshed minutes. Audio usage is charged at $0.00099 per user minute, streaming at $0.0012 per minute, RTMP at $0.015 per minute, and recording at $0.01349 per GB. All accounts receive free email and chat support, while advanced support features can be added with add-on packages starting from $250 per month.

 AWS Chime

Amazon Chime SDK is a video conferencing tool for business users on Amazon Web Services. The platform includes VoIP calling, video messaging capabilities, and virtual meeting functionality allowing users to participate in or host meetings remotely.

Its feature set lets users schedule online meetings and participate via audio or visual services. The platform includes screen-sharing, remote desktop control, and text-based chat for individuals or groups.

Amazon Chime offers security measures to protect data, such as AWS Identity and Access Management policies, user administration, policy management, and SSO setup.

Moreover, many reviews share that AWS Chime has a complex interface that users have a tough time getting used to, and it does not offer an intuitive navigation structure.

The current customer support is pretty mediocre, and different users report varying times for query resolution depending on the customer service executive on the call.

 AWS Chime pricing:

Amazon Chime offers a multi-tier pricing model for video conferencing and online meeting services. The first tier is a free basic plan that allows users to access one-on-one audio/video calls and group chats.

The Plus plan is the second tier, priced at $2.50 per monthly user. This plan provides additional features such as screen sharing, remote desktop control, 1 GB of message history per user, and Active Directory integration.

The third tier is the Pro plan, priced at $15 per user per month. This plan includes all the features of the Plus plan and allows meetings for three or more people, supports up to 100 attendees, and provides recording, Outlook integration, and other advanced features.

 Mux

Mux is an API that enables developers to integrate live and on-demand video experiences into their applications. After completion, it provides broadcasting options for real-time sessions to a large audience via live streaming and on-demand versions.

It simplifies video encoding, delivery, and renditions to ensure optimal video quality on every device.

It provides an SDK for integrating real-time video and live streams into various web-based, iOS-based, and Android-based applications.

Each call can host up to 100 participants in a real-time WebRTC environment, with each participant streaming video content.

However, Mux users suggest that the platform doesn't have a robust UI and needs better ways to represent data, such as graphs and charts, to make report management more inclusive.

Also, while most of the pricing for Mux is competitive, the price point for video encoding is higher. Since many users only opt for SD-quality video, they suggest that it should have a multi-tier pricing structure.

 Mux pricing:

Mux charges a one-time credit of $20 for new registrations and subsequent charges of $0.004 per minute for real-time video, $0.04 per minute for encoding, $0.003 per minute for storage, and $0.0012 per minute for streaming.

The platform also offers simulcast capabilities for $0.02 per minute and auto-generated captions at $0.024 per minute after the initial free 6,000 minutes.

 Whereby

Whereby is a web-based platform that offers users a unique, permanent meeting room, providing flexible meetings without downloading or registering. Guests can quickly join meetings by clicking on the link provided.

Moreover, Whereby has introduced a hybrid meeting solution that reduces echo and eliminates the need for expensive hardware, making it ideal for distributed teams.

It also lets users offer video calls anywhere on their website, mobile app, or web products without opening external links or apps. This feature makes it easy and convenient for users to access video calls quickly and efficiently.

It follows the rules of GDPR, a set of privacy laws in Europe. If the user connecting to their servers is in Europe, they will also connect to a server in Europe, ensuring that all privacy laws are followed. However, users complaining about data encryption often block it due to poor security settings.

The platform is far from perfect. User reviews suggest that Whereby has a free trial but doesn't allow more free users post-trial period compared to alternatives. There is a significant lack of accessible apps and plugins within the platform. Optimizing the available screen area optimally is tough, and developers must enable more integration during collaborations.

 Whereby pricing:

Whereby's pricing model starts at $9.99/month and allows for up to 2,000 user minutes that are renewed monthly.

It charges $0.004 per minute if additional time is needed, making it easy for users to expand their usage. Cloud recording and live streaming features are available for users at $0.01 per minute.

All Whereby accounts come with free email and chat support, which allows users to access technical assistance as required.

So what's the best alternative to TokBox?

Let’s answer that by asking another question — are you tired of video conferencing SDKs that overpromise and underdeliver? Then look no further than Dyte.

With Dyte’s video conferencing SDK, you can create live experiences in under 10 minutes, making it one of the market's most efficient and user-friendly video conferencing tools.

If there is anything that resembles a SaaS fairytale, Zoom’s growth probably is.

During the pandemic, when people stopped going outside, Zoom offered a way to stay connected with family, friends, and colleagues. The daily Zoom users exploded to 300M daily users in 2020 (from 10M in 2019). But the classic Zoom client — the one where you need to download the Zoom app to join a meeting couldn’t serve all the incoming use cases. In comes Zoom Video SDK.

The SDK offered a way for application developers to add live video to their app powered by Zoom’s servers without the classic Zoom client’s user interface.

While the SDK offers great reliability, it is not without some serious shortcomings. Let's look at some of the shortcomings of Zoom SDK.

 Shortcomings of Zoom

Let’s give the credit where it is due. Zoom is a user-friendly video calling application SDK that does the job decently. This is designed for business meetings, and if you use it for that purpose, you will have most of the “must-have” features you need. The audio/video quality is not bad either.

However, in the case of Zoom, being good enough stops it from being great. On top of that, there are some serious shortcomings.

Zoom is specifically designed for business communication. Therefore you may miss out on some important features if you are using it for a different purpose. For example, Zoom’s whiteboard doesn’t expand. During Zoom classes, that can become an annoying distraction.

There are simply no ways to integrate interactivity into the live experience. Yes, you get screen share, chat, and whiteboard [chargable], but that's it. No polls, no reactions, and no AR/VR features.

Based on user reviews, audio/video quality dwindles as the number of participants increases.

Zoom SDK on mobile and web is extremely resource intensive compared to any other SDK available in the market. It eats up a huge amount of CPU, memory, and bandwidth. It can be a big problem if your/ one of your attendee’s devices doesn’t have great hardware configuration or fast internet.

Oh, and did we mention the lackluster support? You’re in for a surprise if you’re an agile development team. Expect slow replies and the expectation to pay hefty amounts to get a basic level of support.

What to look for in an ideal Zoom SDK alternative

If any of Zoom’s flaws prove to be deal breakers for you, you need an alternative. Consider the following factors to find the best SDK for you. Please note this is not an exhaustive list but something to get you started.

Integration: Consider exploring SDKs that offer open APIs, extensive documentation, and reference code. In this way, you will be able to embed it in your app quickly.

Security: Do you intend to exchange trade secrets/ confidential organizational information via video calls? Check if the live video SDK abides by SoC 2 certification. Also, read the user agreement to know how the SDK company handles user data.

Customizability: You should be able to build completely custom live experiences using the SDK. But don’t be okay with that. Expect the SDK provider to offer pre-build UI components and sample code to make building the user experience easier [and faster].

Collaborative features: Waiting rooms, chat, polling, embedded browser, whiteboards – some features are “must-haves” for a seamless video calling experience. Ideally, any SDK worth consideration should offer all the necessary features.

Support: Building live inside your app is a complicated endeavor — you should be able to get in touch with the SDK maker to get your doubts clarified at a moment's notice. Expect multi-channel, 24*7 support.

Light-weight SDK: Look for the SDK that doesn’t significantly add to the download size of your application or web app — making it easy for users with any data connection speed to interact with it.

The Top 10 best Zoom SDK Alternatives

If you are reading this article, you may have lost hope on Zoom. Or maybe you want to explore other video conferencing SDK alternatives.

Either way, this article will provide you features, limitations and pricing for Top 10 Zoom SDK Alternatives like Dyte, Mux, Agora, Vonage Video, Twilio Video, EnableX, Whereby, Jitsi, Daily and AWS Chime.

Mux

Dyte

Agora

Vonage Video

Twilio Video

EnableX

Whereby

Jitsi

Daily

AWS Chime

Let's dive into the world of live video-calling experiences and explore some of the top-notch Zoom SDK alternatives.

 MUX

Mux is a Zoom SDK alternative used to add a live video experience to your application. Mux offers separate SDKs for video, data (read performance analytics), and Mux web video player.

As you can guess, having separate APIs for different functions offers high flexibility [but makes it that much harder to integrate].

However, one big downside of MUX is that it doesn’t offer any collaborative tools out of the box — meaning you’ll have to integrate even more services into your app to get things like chat, screen share, and more running.

 Mux in short:

Mux API makes going live pretty convenient. Embed MUX API give your users a reusable stream key, and they can go live at any time.

Faster encoding converts live videos while streaming. It slashes the time required for transcoding. Your videos are ready for watching almost right after you end streaming.

The support is pretty slow, and you can expect delays in replies – which hurts the most when starting to build live.

The SDK offers no in-built support to help you manage video call disruptions or to manage the publish-subscribe logic of meeting users.

 Mux pricing:

Mux's "Pay as you go" strategy starts you off with $20. Then you pay:

$32 per 1,000 minutes for encoding.

$0.240 per 1,000 minutes for storage.

0.96 per 1,000 minutes for live streaming.

Custom plans are available for large-volume consumption.

 Dyte

“We wanted to bring a video-based interaction with users on our platform. Dyte checked all the right boxes for us!” –Sairee Chahal, Founder & CEO, Mahila Money

Let's talk about Dyte, another great replacement for Zoom SDK. Dyte offers high customizability, all the required collaborative features, and a low-code experience.

However, two of its biggest advantages are:

It makes live video integration into your application too easy. Just a few lines of code and you can enjoy the full potential of Dyte's Video calling and live streaming tech.

Dyte SDK has smart bandwidth Switching and auto-track management. With these, the Dyte SDK automatically maintains video/audio quality even when the connection is poor or different devices are used during the streaming.

It can be a game changer for many users looking for video calling /live streaming SDKs. You don't have to write/modify walls of code, and neither have to worry in case some of your app users have poor connectivity.

With that said, if you are really fond of taking this in your hand, Dyte has flexible options.

 Dyte in short:

Dyte SDK automatically handles audio and video management. Even in the case of poor connection, Dyte SDK adjusts to ensure the viewers/attendees enjoy a great experience. You don't have to temper the code to make necessary changes.

The prebuilt UI kit components allow you to determine how the video would look or feel. You can change colors, add brand icons and make any UI changes.

You can stream to 10k viewers with ease on Dyte-powered web apps.

Dyte analytics offer detailed reports on participant engagement and interaction, helping you improve your streaming experience.

Dyte arms with all the interactive features you can think of - Expandable whiteboards, chat, polling, embedded browser, Screenshare, and many more. On top of that, you can add more features (or connect to other applications) with Dyte's integration gallery. Dyte SDK fits your daily to daily app eco-systems easily because of these integrations.

Dyte SDK supports: \
Mobile: Flutter, Android (Java/Kotlin), iOS (Objective-C/Swift), React Native \
Web: Javascript Core SDK + UI Kit for React JS, Angular, Web Components for everything else \
Desktop: Electron

 Dyte pricing:

With Dyte, you can enjoy 10,000 free minutes per month. Afterward, the product price starts at $0.004 per user per minute, recording costs $0.010 per minute, and RTMP stands at $0.015 per minute.

Dyte offers 24-hour assistance to all clients, free of charge. Whether you have a simple question or need help during a major event or technical issue, the team is there to support you.

_Here's a detailed comparison between Zoom and Dyte SDKs. _

 Agora

Video calling/live streaming features can increase your app engagement. And Agora is an option to consider while searching for the right video-streaming SDK.

First and foremost, Agora offers separate SDKs for video calling, voice, chat, interactive live streaming, and real-time messaging—meaning you need to sit and integrate 10s of SDKs and services to build a basic live video in your app.

 Agora in short:

Agora offers separate SDKs for video calling, audio calling, text messaging, and whiteboard.

Video calling SDK comes with a basic UI kit. With this UI kit, you can customize your app interface, add logos and play with colors.

Android, iOS, Windows, Web, Electron, React Native, Unity, and Flutter – all are supported by Agora SDKs. However, the UI kit isn’t available on windows and Electron.

Some users complain about Agora’s documentation. It doesn’t cover everything a developer needs, and sometimes the Dev has to do some improvisation.

Lackluster support is another point of pain. Support improves with high-tier plans, but those are expensive (starting from $1200/month)

Adding to the fire: the tool doesn’t automatically manage user bandwidth in case their network goes bust—leaving them with a blank screen.

 Agora Pricing:

Agora offers 10,000 free minutes per month.

After that, an audio call costs $0.99/1000 user minutes, a full HD video call comes at $8.99/1000 user minutes, and $1.40/1000 user minutes for the Whiteboard feature.

Advanced features are billed separately, such as the standard Agora analytics plan that costs $149/month.

Agora support has four plans: starter (free), standard ($1200/month), premium ($2999/month), and enterprise ($4900/month). However, the starter plan may feel underwhelming compared to the paid plans.

If you're interested in delving deeper, we've written a comprehensive article on Agora pricing that provides an in-depth analysis.

 Vonage

The next entry on this list is Vonage (previously known as OpenTok) video SDK. It's built based on WebRTC standards and comes with a couple of interactive features. If your needs involve fewer people calls but high-priority audio calls/audio conferences, Vonage SDK is a great option.

 Vonage in short:

With your app built on Vonage video SDK, you can add up to 25 users. So if you’re planning large video conferences (medium size classes, for example), Vonage isn’t the choice you pick.

Vonage stacks up pretty well when it comes to collaborative features. It offers chat, a whiteboard, Google calendar compatibility, emojis, and many other features. You can also access performance data through the "Detailed Meeting Log" feature.

You can store records for up to 15 hours of meetings only.

And each live video room can only support 55 participants per call.

Some video conferencing applications annoyingly ask attendees to download the application first. Thankfully, Vonage isn’t one of them. Your attendees can join by clicking on the meeting link.

 Vonage Video Pricing:

So, the basic plan starts at $9.99 per month and includes 2000 free minutes. Once you cross the usage limit, it'll cost you $0.00395 per minute per user.

If you want to save your video recordings, you pay $0.0125 per minute at minimum.

You also pay extra for advanced features like the Advanced Insights API or an Allowed IP list. This extra cost can go in the $1500-$5000 per month range.

Learn more about Vonage Video pricing here.

 Twilio Video

When it comes to VoIP calls and SmS, Twilio shines bright. However, the brand is no slouch either when it comes to offering video calling tech.

Twilio offers multiple SDKs for voice, Video, the Internet of things, and other functions. You can pick SDKs of your choice and build your app with them or add extra communication channels to existing apps.

 Twilio in short:

Twilio SDKs are compatible with iOS, Android, and Web platforms. Therefore video/audio quality would be the same across various devices and browsers.

You need to manually code in user publish-subscribe logic inside the application when setting up Twilio. This may require 100s of lines of code.

The Twilio video SDK supports up to 50 people.

Twilio has limited plugin options, so integrating with other applications may require some extra work. However, this is to be expected from a developer-focused platform like Twilio.

Currently, Twilio no longer offers any live-streaming SDK.

 Twilio Video pricing:

Twilio offers a free plan for 1-to-1 video applications. For anything more than 1-to-1 video calling, you need to purchase the "standard plan".The standard plan costs $0.004 per participant per minute and $0.01 per composed minute for recording composition. Standard plan users receive 10GB of free storage and pay $0.00167 per GB per day for additional space.

Twilio provides various support plans. The basic plan is free but has limited support. The Business Plan costs $1500/month or 6% of total spending, and the "Personalized" Plan is priced at $5000/month, the highest tier.

Read more about Twilio Video pricing.

 EnableX

Enablex offers multiple SDKs for video conferencing, voice, video UI, SMS, virtual numbers, and Face AI. You can use video SDK for adding video conferencing and use custom UI SDK for customizing. Other SDKs can be included based on your requirements. Again—this is good and bad depending on your team size and the time left to get your product out to the market.

 EnableX in short:

Video API has tons of features to make your video meetings more engaging and productive. You can use Whiteboard, Live recording, Co-browsing, Screen-share, and Live analytics. Plus, up to 500 people can join during the video meetings.

You can control user access and, by extension, security with features like Moderated Entry, Room lock, Floor access control, and viewer role. All video/audio signals are also encrypted.

The SDK supports only a couple of coding languages - Javascript, PHP, Python — leaving you hanging dry if you don’t use these.

The support team can take upto 72 hours to respond to your help request.

The SDK doesn’t optimize users’ video incase they face device or network issues.

 EnableX pricing:

EnableX charges $0.004 per participant per minute for a room of up to 50 people. If your video meetings have more than 50+ attendees, you'll need to ask for a custom price.

Recording and storage will cost you $0.01 per participant per minute and $0.05 per GB per month for storage. If you want your video to be encrypted, there's an additional $500 per month charge.

 Whereby

If you are tired of Zoom’s limitations and potential security issues, Whereby can be another alternative to try. It’s simple to use, reliable, and, most importantly, doesn’t store user data.

 Whereby in short:

Whereby offers basic collaborative features: Whiteboards (powered by Miro), Live chat, user roles (host, participants, viewers), waiting rooms, live streaming, and many more.

Video conferencing sessions can support up to only 200 participants. And you can’t stream the video out to other channels via RTMP or HLS output.

Whereby allows you basic customization options to modify the user interface.

iOS, Android, React Native, and Web- Whereby API covers a wide range of platforms.

Whereby is too simple. Leading power users and developers wanting for more. Plus it’s super limited in the free plan.

 Whereby pricing:

The Explore plan is available for free, but it comes with limited features. The Build plan, however, costs $9.99 per month and includes 2000 participant minutes every month. You need to purchase them at the rate of $0.004 per minute once the 2000 participant minute limit is crossed. Also, cloud recording is priced at $0.01 per minute.

 Jitsi

Jitsi, hands down, is one of the most polarizing entries on this list. It’s basically a collection of multiple open-source projects for different aspects of video conferencing. Therefore, Jitsi is perfect for skilled Devs who love to build applications from scratch. For other user segments, it might feel a bit complicated.

Two of the most prominent projects of the Jitsi are:

Jitsi Meet: A WebRTC-based javascript application that relies on the Jitsi videobridge to make video conferences possible. Without Jitsi videobridge, all Jitsi Meet streams are peer-to-peer. Therefore the more participants you have, the more each client has to work.

_Jitsi videobridge: _Jitsi videobridge is a WebRTC-supported, XMPP server component that bundles and then runs very high numbers of video streams from a single server.

In other words, Jitsi Videobridge ensures participants with lower-end devices still get good video quality. However, it also consumes a lot of bandwidth though.

 Jitsi in short:

Jitsi is open-source. You are free to modify, change and use it in any way you want.

You will get essential features like text sharing via Etherpad, Locking a room, text chatting (web only), Raising hands, Youtube video access during the call, audio-only calls, and third-party app integrations.

Some Features like screen sharing, video/audio call recording, and telephone dial-in to a conference are not available in Jitsi meet. However, you can get those by setting up Jibri and JIgsai (other projects under Jitsi).

Jitsi, simply put, isn’t for users looking for low-code, instant-deployment-ready SDKs. You need to write codes while setting up.

Video calls are end-to-end encrypted, but chat or polls are not.

As mentioned before, the SFU architecture of Jitsi Videobridge reduces resource strain on client devices. However, it can consume a high amount of data.

The absence of some features, such as “raising hand” and “file sharing,” disappoints many Jitsi users.

Jitsi has received 4.3 stars out of 5 on G2.

 Jitsi Pricing:

Jitsi is free. You can use any project under Jitsi at any time. However, there is no dedicated tech support. You need to rely on community support.

 Daily

Daily is another Zoom SDK alternative if you want a video calling solution with live streaming capabilities. The Daily SDK gets you the basic features for video calling.

The Daily SDK is for building any custom application from zero and/or adding video streaming capacity to the application. It supports Flutter, iOS, Android, Web, and React Native platforms.

 Daily in short:

Breakout rooms, Live transcriptions, audio/video recordings, whiteboard, and chat– Daily Prebuilt hands you the basic set of features to get video calling experiences going.

APIs are available for Javascript, Flutter, iOS, and Android platforms.

You can keep a tab on call performance and user engagement by examining logs and analytics.

Pricing is one of the downsides of Daily. It is not a great option for businesses with limited cash to pour on a video calling SDK. If video calling is just a “nice-to-have” addition to your app, there are other affordable alternatives available.

Support can take upto 72 hours to resolve your issues. Leaving you hanging dry.

The tool can’t manage users’ live video interactions on its own. You need to manually code publish-subscribe logic to it.

 Daily pricing:

The first 10000 mins are free. Once you spend it, you pay :

$.004/per min per user for video.

$0.0012/per min per user for interactive live streaming.

$0.01349/per min per user for cloud recordings.

$0.0099/per min per user for audio-only.

There are several support packages available:

The free package comes with only email and chat support. You might have to wait sometime before your issues get resolved.

Advanced support comes at $250/month.

Premium support costs $1900/month

Enterprise support is $3900/month.

 Amazon Chime SDK

Amazon Chime is Amazon’s answer to Zoom’s domination in the video conferencing industry. To put it in an over-simplified way, it allows users to connect with others via video calls, audio calls, and text messaging.

Amazon Chime SDK is the tech behind Amazon Chime but without its shell. By adding this SDK, you add all the features and benefits to your application.

 Amazon Chime SDK in short:

Amazon Chime SDK allows just 25 participants (if participants are on mobile, then 50) to join a video meeting.

Your application can upload multiple versions of the video stream thanks to the simulcast. In other words, your video quality remains consistent across various devices and networks.

Amazon Chime SDK encrypts all calls, videos, and chats.

It lacks some useful features like polling, auto-sync with Google Calendar, and background blur effects.

It doesn’t work well in a Linux environment.

Based on user reviews, Chime faces some difficulties if the participants use the Safari browser.

 Amazon Chime SDK pricing:

Amazon Chime SDK comes with three different pricing plans:

The Basic plan is free. But it is limited to one-to-one video meetings and some basic chat options.

With the Plus plan, you unlock some more useful features, such as screen sharing and remote desktop control. It comes at $2.5/month per user.

The pro plan is the highest-tier plan. You unlock everything Amazon Chime has to offer with this one. Price: $15/month.

 In conclusion

Zoom’s notorious reputation as a “not-so” secure application, questionable privacy policies, and lack of features that you want– if you don’t want to use zoom anymore, you always have options.

Dyte is one of those options that can never go wrong. First, it lets you build your live video applications with a few lines of code. It also automatically manages bandwidth and other resources so that your users always get the best video/audio quality. And it’s secure (SoC2 compliant).

If you want to give it a go, book a demo here.

Top 10 Video Chat SDK

So, you want to add video chat features to your new app, but you’re working with a 5-person team that is already overwhelmed. They simply do not have the time to build code for these new features, but your app would lose serious customer appeal if you didn’t include video chat.

So, what do you do? You ask the “build vs. buy”, choose “buy” (because it IS more affordable and efficient) and decide on using a video calling SDK that will reduce your team’s labor while also giving your software pristine video chat capabilities.

Simple, right? Well, there is the question of picking the right video chat SDK for the job. That is easier said than done because there are way too many video chat SDKs to choose from. In this article, we’ll help you with an initial round of selections by highlighting the top 5 video chat SDKs in the market.

Think of this as the starting point for your research. But first, a quick intro.

 What are video chat SDKs?

Have you ever used a DIY meal kit, like the ones offered by Hello Fresh? You get all the ingredients and have to put them together uniquely to make a meal.

An SDK (software development kit) is exactly that but with software development. You get a set of tools designed to implement certain features, functionalities, and capabilities within any software ecosystem. You get pieces of code that can be plugged in, optimized, and customized to let dev teams incorporate certain features, but in ways specific to the software requirements and brand identity.

For example, a video chat SDK comes with code designed to quickly build features like video chat (1-on-1 and group calls, screen sharing, whiteboards, noise cancellation, etc.). But devs who use a certain SDK can also (ideally) tweak the code so that, say, active video calls all have the brand logo visible in them.

The SDK gives devs the baseline code for the features they want to build, while also letting them have a reasonable amount of freedom over what the feature will look like, when it is actually used by the software’s target audience.

 Top 10 Video Chat SDKs

Dyte SDK

Zoom SDK

Jitsi Meet SDK

Twilio SDK

Agora SDK

Sinch SDK

Cometchat SDK

Vonage SDK

 Limitations of Dyte SDK

Mobile SDKs are in beta, as of writing this article.

 Pricing for Dyte SDK

You start with 10,000 free minutes…every month. If you exhaust these minutes, you pay $0.004 per user per minute, with recordings and RTMP-out available at $0.010 and $0.015 per minute, respectively.

Here’s a deep dive into Dyte’s pricing.

 Limitations of MirrorFly SDK

There have been reports of delays in bug resolution by the Mirrorfly team.

Doesn’t perform as well in low bandwidth conditions.

 Pricing for MirrorFly SDK

Interested users must contact MirrorFly directly for information on their pricing.

 Apphitect SDK

Apphyticen provides video chat solutions to enterprises & SMEs. This SDK allows 100% customizations on call and chat functions.

 Limitations of Apphitect SDK

Does not enable the inclusion of unlimited participants in white-label video calls.

 Pricing for Apphitect SDK

Interested parties have to contact sales to know about Apphitect’s pricing.

 Zoom SDK

The world’s most popular video communication platform also provides SDKs for developers to implement audio-video communication within their apps. Zoom offers two kinds – Meeting SDKs and Video SDKs.

The Meeting SDK basically lets you use and display the Zoom client within a third-party website or app to facilitate video calls. Devs can use the SDK's “custom UI” feature to customize the UI of the Zoom client. The web version of the SDK also offers z “component view” that displays with Meeting SDK among website components, along with the default client view.

The Video SDK offers a set of features – audio, video, screen sharing, chat, data streams, etc. – as a service. It comes with a cluster of server-side APIs and webhooks to build all or some of these features, as a project requires.

 Features of Zoom SDK

Easy for devs to import libraries and packages to quickly implement the SDK.

Supports 7 major languages

Provides open translation extensibility

Fully customizable UI

 Limitations of Zoom SDK

Best suited for basic user cases with host-participant dynamic. If you need modified permission for different peers (multiple hosts in a meeting, for eg.), implementing the same may require added development effort.

The SDK’s file size is quite large, especially compared to its peers.

 Pricing for Zoom SDK

Zoom has multiple pricing plans, depending on your project needs. It is best to look at their pricing page to get started.

Check out how Zoom compares with Dyte’s SDKs

 Jitsi Meet SDK

Unlike the other SDKs on this list, Jitsi Meet is fully open-source. This SDK is used for implementing video conferencing abilities into a new app. It has multiple platform support, and comes in two variations – meet.jit.si which hosts the free-for-use Jitsi Meet instance, and the Jitsi Videobridge which enables Jitsi’s multi-peer video features.

Jitsi Meet is especially well-known for its robust and active community, which is a pride among open-source communities everywhere. Not only can you ask questions and get detailed & helpful answers, but you can also ask for paid help from folks who already have extensive experience of working with the SDK.

 Features of Jitsi Meet SDK

Open source with impressive community support.

Relatively easy setup, thanks to its one-click installation

User-friendly UI and setup steps.

Uses industry standards security mechanisms to ensure that user data remains strictly confidential.

Supports multiple clients – Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS.

 Limitations of Jitsi Meet SDK

According to Jitsi’s DevOps Guide, “Building a scalable infrastructure is not a task for beginning Jitsi Administrators. The instructions (of the guide) assume that you have installed a single node version successfully, and that you are comfortable installing, configuring, and debugging Linux software.”

In other words, achieving peak scalability with Jitsi Meet might not be the easiest thing in the world.

 Pricing for Jitsi Meet SDK

As mentioned above, Jitsi Meet is open-source and free of cost. However, if you do want to opt for a paid option, you can go for 8x8 Jitsi as a Service(JaaS). Pricing for JaaS is based on the number of monthly active users (MAU).

Check out our comparison of Jitsi vs. Agora vs. Dyte for a deep dive.

 Twilio SDK

Twilio offers both APIs and SDKs to facilitate the integration of video calling capabilities into applications. These call sessions are also equipped with virtual video backgrounds and customizable layout options. They also provide quality control tools such as the Network Quality API, required for monitoring network performance and bandwidth utilization among participants in a video chat.

The SDK supports Web, iOS, and Android platforms. You get chats, video, and programmable chats for real-time communication.

 Features of Twilio SDK

Breakout rooms for video conferences

Quick and easy integrations

Extensive documentation for integration and usage

GDPR and HIPAA compliant

Virtual Video backgrounds and animations available

Free trial credits for P2P and group video calls.

Enables selective recording – you can choose which specific participant to record in a call (such as only recording the speaker in a webinar).

 Limitations of Twilio SDK

Steep learning curve.

Expensive pricing.

Requires significant programming skill.

No programmable alert system.

 Pricing for Twilio SDK

Pricing starts at $4 per 1,000 minutes. Recordings cost $0.004 per participant minute. Recording compositions costs $0.01 per composed minute, and you pay $0.00167 GB/day for storage after the first 10 GB is exhausted.

And, if you need a deeper exploration, read our detailed breakdown of Twilio’s pricing in 2023.

Check out how Twilio compares to Dyte’s Video Calling APIs.

 Agora SDK

Agora provides SDKs that allow integration of audio-video communication, with features such as augmented reality (AR) facial masks, and sound effects. You can stream video in quality ranging from 96p to 1080p, with tools to optimize bandwidth.
The SDK can be used to implement video calling, voice calling, interactive live streaming, and recording abilities.

 Features of Agora SDK

Multi-platform support.

Adaptive video resolution technology to adjust video based on a user’s network conditions.

AR Facial Masks.

Whiteboards, Screen Sharing.

Noise cancellation.

Compatible with Flutter and React Native.

Supplemental Enhancement Information (SEI)

 Limitations of Agora SDK

Given its usage-based pricing model, Agora can be quite expensive at scale.

Integration can require significant developer effort.

 Pricing for Agora API

Agora’s API pricing is based on usage. What you pay depends on what video quality you want on your app, the number of meeting participants, and the duration of the video call (with said video quality).

Agora’s pricing model can be a little complicated (especially if this is your first time using a video calling API), so take a moment to look at their pricing page. You can also have a look at our detailed breakdown of Agora’s pricing model. \

Check out how Agora compares to Dyte’s Video Calling APIs.

 Sinch SDK

Sinch allows app and web developers to infuse video chat experience for end users through highly customizable SDKs. Supporting iOS, Android, and web-based JavaScript, it allows the implementation of video calls, SMS verification, voice calls, and engagement tools.

You get an instant messaging SDK for iOS, Android, and web apps, along with customization and support for SIP, VoIP, and PSTN connectivity.

 Features of Sinch SDK

Multi platform support

Low latency

Custom Video Filters and Masks

Instant Messaging

SMS Verification

Quality of Service tools to monitor call performance

 Limitations of Sinch SDK
