      <description>&lt;p&gt;Investigations leading to a WHO-validated declaration of elimination of schistosomiasis transmission are contemplated for several countries, including Caribbean island nations. With assistance from the Pan American Health Organization, we undertook freshwater snail surveys in two such nations, Antigua and Barbuda, and Montserrat in September and October 2017. Historically, the transmission of Schistosoma mansoni supported by the Neotropical vector snail Biomphalaria glabrata occurred in both countries. Transmission on the islands is thought to have been interrupted by the treatment of infected people, improved sanitation, introduction of competitor snails, and on Montserrat with the eruption of the Soufrière volcano which decimated known B. glabrata habitats. Guided by the available literature and local expertise, we found Biomphalaria snails in seven of 15 and one of 14 localities on Antigua and Montserrat, respectively, most of which were identified anatomically and molecularly as Biomphalaria kuhniana. Two localities on Antigua harbored B. glabrata, but no schistosome infections in snails were found. For snail-related aspects of validation of elimination, there are needs to undertake basic local training in medical malacology, be guided by historical literature and recent human schistosomiasis surveys, improve and validate sampling protocols for aquatic habitats, enlist local expertise to efficiently find potential transmission sites, use both anatomical and molecular identifications of schistosomes or putative vector snail species found, if possible determine the susceptibility of recovered Biomphalaria spp. to S. mansoni, publish survey results, and provide museum vouchers of collected snails and parasites as part of the historical record.Phytochemical investigation of the leaves of Lepisanthes rubiginosa led to the isolation of two new glycosides, lepisantheside A (1) and lepisantheside B (2), together with two known compounds acutoside A (3) and 3-O-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-]-oleanolic acid (4). Their structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic methods (HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR), and by comparison with the reported data. The cytotoxicity of compounds 1-4 against four human cancer cell lines (KB, HepG2, SK-LU-1 and MCF7) was evaluated. Compound 4 exhibited significant activity with IC50 values of 9.57, 6.66, 6.97 and 18.32 µM, respectively, in comparison with the postive control ellipticine.We investigate the immediate social context of contraceptive behaviors specifically, the intimate relationship. We use the Relationship Dynamics and Social Life (RDSL) study (2008-2012), based on a random sample of 1,003 women ages 18-19 residing in a Michigan county. Women were interviewed weekly for 2.5 years, resulting in an age range of 18-22. We test three sets of hypotheses about change over time within a relationship, using relationship-level within-between models, which compare a couple's contraceptive behaviors across different times in the relationship. First, we find that a couple is less likely to use contraception when the relationship is more intimate and/or committed and that a couple becomes less likely to use contraception over time, regardless of intimacy and commitment. Second, we find that a couple using contraception becomes increasingly likely to choose hormonal over coital methods, but this change occurs as a relationship endures and is unrelated to intimacy and/or commitment. Third, we find that a condom-using couple's consistency does not decline when there is conflict; rather, consistency of condom use declines over time regardless of the relationship's characteristics. We also demonstrate that conflict and power imbalance increase reliance on hormonal methods among those using contraception; conflict decreases consistency among withdrawal (but not condom) users; and nonmonogamy increases reliance on condoms and decreases withdrawal consistency. The strong and consistent link between duration and contraceptive behaviors-regardless of intimacy, commitment, conflict, or power imbalance-suggests that the continual vigilance required for long-term contraceptive use is difficult during early emerging adulthood.This report is dedicated to determination of anticancer drug methotrexate (MTX) in human urine using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Aluminum oxide loaded with silver nanoparticles (AO-Ag) was proposed as SERS-active sorbent and used for solid-phase extraction (SPE) of the analyte and its SERS-based determination (SPE-SERS protocol). Enarodustat MTX has strong SERS signal only in alkaline media that challenges its determination in urine due to strong background signal caused by creatinine. The application of SPE step enables to purify and concentrate the analyte making MTX determination possible. Also, the application of the same material for SPE pretreatment and SERS analysis enables to simplify and speed-up the protocol. The protocol was developed and tested using artificially spiked samples of human urine collected during different time of day to account deviating composition of the urine matrix. The use of dilution step of the analyte-containing urine was proposed prior SPE-SERS protocol to reduce the difference between morning-time- and daytime-collected urine achieving maximal reliability of the analysis. Additional physicochemical study was performed to estimate an influence of the primary intrinsic urine components (salts, urea, creatinine) and their mixtures on the analytical signal. Final protocol enables MTX determination in human urine within 20-300 μg mL-1 range of concentrations with satisfactory precision (11-19% RSD), accuracy (97-104% apparent recovery), and limit of detection (4.2 μg mL-1). Accounting that the analysis requires less than 15 min and portable Raman spectrometer, the protocol seems to be promising for therapeutic drug monitoring in hospitals to identify poor MTX clearance in a timely manner and minimize adverse effects of therapy.       <description>&lt;p&gt;Graphene oxide (GO) crosslinked nanocomposites hydrogels (NCH) of chitosan (CS) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were synthesized and the feasibility of its application as a versatile adsorbent for the remediation of cationic (methylene blue, MB) as well as anionic (methyl orange, MO) dyes contaminated wastewater was explored. Initially, GO was functionalized with vinyltriethoxysilane which was subsequently used as a chemical crosslinker to synthesize the NCH of CS and CMC (CS/CMC-NCH) with the polymeric mixture of diallyldimethylammonium chloride and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid. About 99% dye was adsorbed from 50 mg/L dye solution of MB dye with 0.4 g/L of CS/CMC-NCH at pH 7, whereas, for MO about 82% dye was adsorbed with 0.6 g/L of CS/CMC-NCH at pH 3. The Adsorption of both dyes is well explained using pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models with the maximum adsorption capacities of 655.98 mgdye/gads for MB and 404.52 mgdye/gads for MO. Thermodynamics studies suggested spontaneous and exothermic nature of the adsorption process with values of ΔS 0. Furthermore, CS/CMC-NCH showed excellent regeneration capacity for continuous twenty cycles of adsorption-desorption. Therefore, the synthesized CS/CMC-NCH is a versatile adsorbent that can treat both anionic and cationic dyes contaminated wastewater.Histoplasma capsulatum is an ascomyceteous fungus and a human lung pathogen, which is present in river valleys of the Americas and other continents. H. capsulatum and two related human pathogens, Blasmomyces dermatitidis and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, belongs to the Ajellomycetaceae family. The genomes of all three species code for three homologous and tentative enzymes of the linoleate diol synthase (LDS) family of fusion enzymes with dioxygenase (DOX) and cytochrome P450 domains. One group aligned closely with 8R-DOX-5,8-LDS of Aspergilli, which oxidizes linoleic acid to 5S,8R-dihydroxylinoleic acid; this group was not further investigated. The second group aligned with 10R-DOX-epoxy alcohol synthase (EAS) of plant pathogens. Expression of this enzyme from B. dermatitidis revealed only 10R-DOX activities, i.e., oxidation of linoleic acid to 10R-hydroperoxy-8E,12Z-octadecadienoic acid. The third group aligned in a separate entity. Expression of these enzymes of H. capsulatum and B. dermatitidis revealed no DOX activities, but both enzymes transformed 13S-hydroperoxy-9Z,11E-octadecadienoic acid efficiently to 12(13S)epoxy-11-hydroperoxy-9Z-octadecenoic acid. Other 13-hydroperoxides of linoleic and α-linolenic acids were transformed with less efficiency and the 9-hydroperoxides of linoleic acid were not transformed. In conclusion, a novel EAS has been found in H. capsulatum and B. dermititidis with 13S-hydroperoxy-9Z,11E-octadecadienoic acid as the likely physiological substrate. &lt;br&gt;
 To investigate the capability of delta-radiomics to predict pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This retrospective study enrolled 165 consecutive patients with LARC (training set, n = 116; test set, n = 49) who received nCRT before surgery. All patients underwent pre- and post-nCRT MRI examination from which radiomics features were extracted. A delta-radiomics feature was defined as the percentage change in a radiomics feature from pre- to post-nCRT MRI. A data reduction and feature selection process including the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm was performed for building T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) delta-radiomics signature. Logistic regression was used to build a T2WI and DWI combined radiomics model. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to assess diagnostic performance. Delong method was used to compare the performance of delta-radiomics model with that of magnetic resonance tumor regression grade (mrTRG). &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Twenty-seven of 165 patients (16.4%) achieved pCR. T2WI and DWI delta-radiomics signature, and the combined model showed good predictive performance for pCR. The combined model achieved the highest areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.91 (95% confidence interval 0.85-0.98) and 0.91 (95% confidence interval 0.83-0.99) in the training and test sets, respectively (significantly greater than those for mrTRG; training set, p &amp;lt; 0.001; test set, p = 0.04). &lt;/p&gt;

Using a phylogenetically controlled meta-analysis on over 2200 experimental studies and more than 1200 wild plants, we ask if land use intensification is causing plant reproduction to be pollen limited at global scales. Here we report that plants reliant on pollinators in urban settings are more pollen limited than similarly pollinator-reliant plants in other landscapes. Plants functionally specialized on bee pollinators are more pollen limited in natural than managed vegetation, but the reverse is true for plants pollinated exclusively by a non-bee functional group or those pollinated by multiple functional groups. Plants ecologically specialized on a single pollinator taxon were extremely pollen limited across land use types. These results suggest that while urbanization intensifies pollen limitation, ecologically and functionally specialized plants are at risk of pollen limitation across land use categories.A current challenge in condensed matter physics is the realization of strongly correlated, viscous electron fluids. &lt;p&gt;DS/obese rats were subjected to surgical removal of inguinal SAT or sham surgery at 8 weeks of age. They were provided with a 0.3% NaCl solution as drinking water or water alone for 4 weeks from 9 weeks of age. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Salt loading exacerbated hypertension, insulin resistance, as well as left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, inflammation, fibrosis, and diastolic dysfunction in DS/obese rats. Although SAT removal did not affect LV hypertrophy in salt-loaded DS/obese rats, it attenuated hypertension, insulin resistance, and LV injury as well as restored fat mass and alleviated inflammation and the downregulation of adiponectin gene expression in VAT. In addition, whereas salt loading worsened renal injury as well as upregulated the expression of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system-related genes in the kidney, these effects were suppressed by removal of SAT. &lt;/p&gt;

We report a proof-of-concept structured light generation experiment, using a cladding-pumped 7-core MCF amplifier as an integrated parallel amplifier array and a spatial light modulator (SLM) to actively control the amplitude, polarization and phase of the signal light input to each fibre core. Methods A total of ninety-five (95) adult rats were used for the experiment. The whole study protocol was divided into three sets of individual experiments. The animals were divided randomly into seven groups of five rats each. The rats were given a diet supplemented with 50 g high fat to 50 g vital feeds for two weeks. The study lasted 28 days with daily administration and weekly blood glucose and body weight check. At the end of the experiment protocol, the rats were fasted overnight and were anesthetized. Blood was collected via cardiac puncture from each animal for biochemical analysis. Metglim 3.38 mg/kg bodyweight was used as positive control. Diabetes was induced using streptozotocin (35 mg/kg in 0.1 M phosphate-buffered saline) intraperitoneally for 5 days. Phytochemicals were analyzed in both extract and fractions. Results Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, carotenoids, terpenes, and steroids in both extract and fractions. Proteins, carbohydrates, and fats were detected by systematic molecular analysis. Fraction 1 of plant extracts prevented glucose-induced hyperglycaemia 30 min' post glucose load in all rats. Streptozotocin treatment caused a significant increase (p˂0.05) in blood sugar, total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, low-density lipoproteins and a significant (p˂0.05) decrease in food intake, body weight and high-density lipoproteins in diabetic rats. Conclusion Treatment with the extract significantly improved the derangements caused by streptozotocin. Bioprocess conditions namely temperature, pH, agitation and duration were comparatively modeled using statistical and artificial neural network (ANN) methods to predict and optimize product yield using the matrix of a central composite rotatable design (CCRD). Response surface methodology (RSM) was the statistical approach while a feed-forward neural network, trained with Levenberg-Marquardt back-propagation algorithm, was the neural network method.
