I've launched my own startup :)

Yesterday I launched my own startup - Meetendly.com. I need your help. Please give me feedback on what you think about this project. I know it’s not something very unique but I have few ideas to make some disruption.

What is Meetendly?
Meetendly is an app which helps you schedule your meetings.

It’s for you?
Yes if you need one place where you can redirect your clients and give them the possibility to book a meeting with you.

How it works?
You create a meeting type for example:
Subject: JavaScript consultations
Duration: 60 min.
Price: $50

Then you will receive a unique link to your calendar where your customers can book an appointment. This is my own link for a PHP private lesson.
https://app.meetendly.com/meeting/octocode/konsultacja-php-60-min

Payment gateways
For now, you can use 3 payment gateways: PayPal, P24, PayU. I am working on Stripe integration.

Other features
I created a release plan for this year. You can find it here :) https://meetendly.com/features/

Questions for you

What do you think about the brand?

What do you think about the app?

Will you use it?

Do you have someone to whom you can recommend Meetendly?

The easiest way to publish your project

A few days ago Digital Ocean ran a new option in their service. It's called "Apps". This is the best option for devs who want to publish their project but don't have dev ops experience.

Everything that you must do is create a new app using the app's creator. You connect your GitHub account, choose the project that you want to deploy and that's it. Of course, if you need to set additional configuration it's not so simple but for simple landing pages or static websites, it's enough.

I recommend you to try this service because 3 projects are free. The best in it is autoscaling. If you create a project then Digital Ocean will scale the machines to handle traffic in your app.

As they said, "Focus on code, not on infrastructure".

Please let me know if you use it and what do you think about services like that.

Lockdown positives

During the pandemic situation in my country (Poland) I decided to spent my extra time making little experiment. But first I want to tell you what's my background.

When the lockdown was started I save about 1h per day because of work remotely from my home. I don't like to get bored so I started making content for my Instagram (@octocode). This content is in polish but it doesn't matter. I extend my community from 98 followers to 600+ within 2 months. Why do I tell you about it? Because I met interesting people who inspired me to take the next step.

I decided to make a little experiment - try to build a startup based on the community. I asked my followers what project should I build. The winner is Meetenderly.com It's a calendar that you can embed on your website and you can sell your time. Let's imagine that you are a consultant and you want to sell your consultations.

You can create events like "60 min. consultation" set a price ex. 100$ and it's ready. Meetenderly will provide you code to embed on your website and it will be ready to sell your time.

I want to ask you what do you think about my idea. Remember that it's an experiment and I want to create this project based on community feedback. Every comment, suggestion, or idea is priceless for me.

For now, I have a landing page. I made it within 1 day so it's not perfect. You can leave me feedback about it. On my Instagram, I document my journey with this project so if you want to follow me it would be nice :) For today I published content in polish but I think if you join me there I try to publish in English because it's the next thing I want to try - improve my English skills.

Please let me know what do you think about this experiment and project as well.

It's not a bug it's a feature

So here it is ... corona time. I'm writing this post after one week of full remote work. I worked remotely before but I never had one week home office. I think many of us (developers) are in the same position. I think we are very lucky because we can work remotely. Today I want to share with you what changed in my work life because of the corona.

 Self-discipline

I've always been a bit lazy. Now I had to make a plan to get the sh ** t done in a situation when I am alone in my room (cave). It's so hard when you see a fridge or couch. But I found a way how to deal with that.

 Rule # 1

I must be an early bird. If I woke up too late I can't focus. So I wake up about 6 a.m.

 Rule # 2

I needed to take care of my education. So I created a learning sheet where I have sections from a course that I learn now (MongoDB). This helps me know where am I on a timeline of this course.

 Rule # 3

I slice my daily routine to time blocks. I work full time as a Software Developer so I need to deliver value to a company. It's look something like that:

07:00 - 08:00 -> Code review
08:00 - 10:00 -> Code session
10:00 - 10:30 -> Standup
10:30 - 11:00 -> Coffee break
11:00 - 13:00 -> Another code session
13:00 - 13:30 -> Lunch time! + another coffee
13:30 - 14:00 -> Code review
14:00 - 15:00 -> Last code session

 Rule # 4

Less social media. For now, everywhere you go you just see articles and content about coronavirus. It's so demotivating. I decided to avoid all media where I can get news about it. Result? I have 1-2 hours for my side projects.

 Rule # 5 - the most important

Use this hard time as an advantage. Do you know that a person who works as a bus driver or waitress can't do their job remotely? When you realize that we as programmers can do our job as before pandemic, you will find advantages of this situation.

For me it was easy. I had 7 side projects deep in my drawer. Now I refreshed my website. Created a landing page for my e-book and tomorrow I want to try to create my first Youtube video. Why I didn't do that before? Because I was in my comfort zone and I didn't underestimate the time that I have. I still have 24h per day but I try to use it smarter.

 Summary

Make something cool when you stay at home. Please share with me how you manage your time during corona time. Are you doing some side projects or something for your education? Let me know.

JavaScript Quiz

Hello there!

I' working on JavaScript Quiz. I have already working software where you can type your source code and check if your solution is correct. Next two weeks I need to create some questions to give you as many challenges as I can.

Maybe do you have some questions/tasks which you get during recruitments? I will be really grateful if you share with me some interesting tasks in comments.

For example one of my tasks is ...

Write
FizBuzz(N)
function which gets one parameter N > 0. The function should build a string with numbers from 1 to N.

If the number is divisible by 3 instead of the number you should put "Fizz".

If the number is divisible by 5 instead of the number you should put "Buzz".

If the number is divisible by 3 and 5 instead of the number you should put "FizzBuzz".

Ok, it's not so simple :) Because you can't use % (modulo operator).

 Question to you!

Do you need some inspiration? Maybe you just want to talk about programming with other people? And finally, maybe you want to help other people learn more about programming?

If it's true
15 app ideas for beginners

Hello crew!

Every day I work with newbies who want to be code ninjas :) I always repeat that the best way to learn how to code is to start code. Simple as that. You can watch millions of hours of tutorials but when you start code always you must beat problems. Reality is not the same that tutorial :)

"The best" type of programmers which you can see ex. on Instagram are people who "still learn" but they only learn. They don't start any project, they don't finish and release any project end-to-end. IMHO even the smallest project but done is worth more than the best tutorial. So today I want to give you some inspiration. Here you have my 20 ideas of simple apps which newbie can do.

 1. Music player

You can use no copyright music like here: https://www.bensound.com/

 2. URL Shortner

The user gives you a long URL and you can provide a shorter version. Like https://tinyurl.com/

 3. Scientific calculator

It's a nice idea to show that you can do the Math.

 4. PC Automation

For example, it can be a script that moves imported images to your google drive folder for automatic synchronization.

 5. Web crawler

Just choose any website and try to write a script that automatically gets some data from it.

 6. Speed typing test

It can be awesome even for you. Coders should type fast and correctly.

 7. Random password generator

You can give users a choice of how strong it should be.

 8. Instagram bot

Like for like, comment for comment. I don't like stuff like that. But it's just for fun and practice.

 9. Twitter bot

Automatically likes for everyone? Sound's great!

 10. Image downloader

You can use a web crawler and try to download every image from websites. Feel like Mark Zuckerburg!

 11. Alarm clock

Great idea for sleepy heads.

 12. Linkedin bot

You can automate making business connections.

 13. Hobby website

Just make a website about what you love. It's the best project to practice RWD.

 14. Classic snake game

To highlight your version you may make special effects or animations.

 15. Quiz app

This is one of my current projects! Quizzes will be live forever :D

 Question to you!

Do you need some inspiration? Maybe you just want to talk about programming with other people? And finally, maybe you want to help other people learn more about programming?

If it's true

I am wondering what do you think about a programmer who doesn't know English? I know English is an international language but how to learn it in an efficient way?

I think my English is terrible but I try to improve it. Is there anyone who can help me feel more comfortable with it?

Why people want to be a programmer

Why do people want to be a programmer? I think 99% percent of them heard that programmers earn a lot of money :) Yep it's true but not everyone. I have friends who are programmers but they earn just 4k per month. 4k PLN so it's like 1K USD!

So why they earn so small? Because they stay in place. They don't do any courses or tutorials to improve their skills. They settle down on a nice, comfortable job where they do boring tasks day by day ... such o shame? Not really. They are happy so I think it's ok for them. But should it be? Not really. I think every one of us on Earth should have some mission. To make this world better. I know it's so philosophical but WHY programmers focus mainly on hard skills forgettable about soft skills like WHY we code? What do we want to do? Just make money? For me, programming is a mission that's why I teach programming newbie.

Next reason that why people want to be a programmer is remote work. Ok but it's not for everyone. Do you have self-discipline? If you don't it's not for you. Most of us don't have enough self-discipline to work remotely. 99% percent of junior developers want to work remotely. How do you get knowledge from more experienced teammates? Working face2face when you have the possibility to ask a question is the most efficient way to get more experience and additional knowledge if you are a newbie.

What do you think about a newbie in IT (spacially programming) world?
