You've probably seen the posts. "$100/hr remote AI training jobs!" — usually with a link, rarely with the full story.

I spent time reading Micro1's actual program pages and referral terms, and this is the honest version: what the platform is, what it pays, what the AI interview is like, and the catch that almost nobody mentions.

Disclosure before anything else: I am a registered Micro1 referral partner. The roles link in this article is my referral link — if you are hired through it and complete 10 hours of work, Micro1 pays me a referral fee at no cost to you. It does not affect your pay or your chances. I'm not a Micro1 employee or recruiter.

 What Micro1 actually is

Micro1 is a Palo Alto-based company that supplies vetted human experts to AI labs and enterprises. The experts create, solve, and evaluate the tasks that frontier AI models are trained and tested on — coding problems, contract analysis, clinical reasoning, CAD work, finance scenarios, and more.

You work as an independent contractor, fully remote, paid in USD through Deel on a biweekly cycle. There is no fee to apply, ever. If anyone asks you for a deposit to "unlock" Micro1 work, that's a scam — genuine Micro1 email only comes from micro1.ai domains, and they don't recruit through Telegram or WhatsApp DMs.

Who it's actually for (and who should skip it)

The high-paying pipelines are for people with real, verifiable depth:

Senior software engineers — listings around $50–$150/hr

Attorneys — a current Federal Civil Litigation listing shows $150–$250/hr with 30 openings

CAD / engineering specialists (CATIA, PCB design, BIM) — around $63–$122/hr

Finance and tax experts — up to roughly $170/hr on specialist listings

Design and audio experts — $21–$70/hr

Generalist evaluation work exists too, at far lower rates. If you have less than ~3 years of professional experience in a field and no licence or credential, the expert pipelines will almost certainly reject you — save yourself the 40 minutes.

The Zara interview, step by step

Every candidate goes through Zara, Micro1's AI recruiter:

Profile and application — you pick a role and submit your background.

AI interview (20–40 minutes) — a conversational, on-camera style interview about your experience, with a live task drawn from your field. A lawyer might get a contract-redlining exercise; an engineer gets a real coding problem.

Skills assessment — some roles add a follow-up technical check.

Certification decision — you find out whether you're certified for that pipeline.

It's a real filter, not a formality. Treat it like a job interview, because it is one — just conducted by an AI.

The catch: certification is not a job

This is the #1 misunderstanding, and the referral terms state it plainly: referring or certifying does not guarantee placement.

Passing makes you eligible. You're then matched to projects as client work opens up, which can take days, weeks, or longer — and some certified experts wait a while. The realistic complaints about Micro1 online are about this waiting period and about interview glitches, not about unpaid completed work. Budget your expectations accordingly: this is a pipeline you enter, not a shift you book.

How referrals work (why you're seeing these posts everywhere)

Micro1 pays flat referral fees — from about $200 up to $3,000 depending on the role — but only after a referred candidate is certified, matched, and completes 10 hours of paid work. Nothing is paid for clicks or signups. That's why half of LinkedIn seems to be posting these roles: the incentive is real, but it only pays out on genuine placements, which is also why pre-qualification matters more than volume.

One critical detail: attribution is first-link, first-served. If you apply directly on Micro1's site first and click a referral link later, the referral can't be credited. So if you intend to use someone's link (mine or anyone's), use it before you start an application.

 Should you apply?

Worth your 40 minutes if:

You have 3+ years (or a licence/PhD) in engineering, law, medicine, finance, design, or a skilled trade

You can explain complex problems in English, clearly, on an interview

You have 10+ free hours a week and understand contract work has no guaranteed hours

Skip it if you're looking for guaranteed income, an entry-level role, or a signup bonus. There isn't one.

If you want to check the current roles first, I maintain a roles page with the live role families, pay ranges, and a 60-second pre-qualification checklist so you can filter yourself before the interview does: AI Expert Roles Board

I'll update this post as listings and terms change. If you went through the Zara interview recently, I'd genuinely like to hear how it went — the comments are the most useful part of posts like this.

Pay ranges above are from public Micro1 listings checked on October 30, 2026, and change with client demand. Nothing here is a promise of employment, placement, or income.
