After a year of using AI every day, most of us have hundreds of chats: research, code, plans, drafts. They live on someone else's website, sorted by "last opened", and searching them is painful. Sooner or later you want all of them, as files you own.

Here's every way to do that today, the official ones first.

  1. The official exports

All three services can send you everything they have:

ChatGPT: Settings → Data controls → Export data. You get an email with a ZIP: one big HTML page plus
conversations.json
.

Claude: Settings → Privacy → Export data. Also an email with a ZIP of JSON files.

Gemini: through Google Takeout (your Gemini activity), as an account-wide archive.

What they're good for:

✅ Complete, free, made by the company itself. Do this once as a backup, whatever else you use.

❌ The files are made for computers, not people: JSON, or one huge page.

❌ You can't pick: it's all or nothing, and it can take hours or days to arrive.

❌ Formulas, tables and code aren't laid out for reading or for note apps.

  2. Copy chats one by one

Open a chat, copy, paste into a document. Fine for three chats. For 300, it's a weekend.

  3. A browser extension that exports many chats

This is what I built, so take this part with that in mind: AI Chat Exporter (ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini). It runs in your browser, on the chat site you're already signed in to.

How it works:

Open chatgpt.com, claude.ai or gemini.google.com, and click Export next to Share.

Click Export many chats…

The list appears right away and fills in while it loads. Search by title, pick a date range, or filter by starred chats or a Claude Project. Untick what you don't want.

Click Export. You get one ZIP:

claude-export-2026-10-20/
index.md ← a list of every chat, with links
  chats/
    2026-09-14_Thesis chapter 2 outline.md
    2026-09-16_Fix the CSV import bug.md
    …
artifacts/ ← files the AI made (code, documents)

Each chat is a clean Markdown file. It opens straight in Obsidian, Notion or GitHub, with formulas and code exactly as written. You can also tick "Also save the raw data (JSON)".

A few honest details:

It goes at a human pace: one chat at a time, at least a second apart, so the website isn't hammered. 800 chats take about 20 minutes. You can stop at any time and keep what's done, or close the tab and continue later.

Long exports are saved in parts of 200 chats, so a browser hiccup never loses everything.

Your chats never leave your browser. The files are made on your computer; nothing is sent to me.

Free vs paid: exporting single chats (PDF, Word, Markdown, Text, JSON, Copy) is free with no daily limit, and you can export up to 10 chats at once for free. Pro removes the limit, so it's all your chats in one go, and removes the small "Exported with CarryAll" line from PDF and Word files. Pro is $4.99/month or $39/year.

Get it here: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/cfgjpdpemgojclmdnhbajaedgchlddhd

More about it: https://carryall.siddheshthapa.com/?ref=devto

  Which one should you use?

You want…

Use

A full backup, just in case

The official export (all three services)

A few chats as documents

Copy/paste, or the extension's free export

Your whole history as readable files, picked and searchable

An extension that exports many chats

If you try it and something breaks, tell me in the comments. I read every one.
