Most developers copy-paste sensitive data
into online hash tools without checking
where it goes.

OmniWebTool's Hash Generator runs 100%
in your browser.

MD5 · SHA-256 · SHA-512

Your data never leaves your device.
No server. No logs. No GDPR risk.

The free tool that saved my client from a GDPR fine

True story.

A freelance designer I know was compressing client
contracts using a popular online PDF tool.

Invoices. NDAs. Client personal data.

All uploaded to a third-party server she'd never
heard of, in a country she didn't know, with a
privacy policy she'd never read.

Under GDPR Article 28, she was the data controller.
The PDF tool was an unauthorized data processor.
That's a violation — even if nothing went wrong.

 The Problem Nobody Talks About

Every "free" online tool has a business model.
If you're not paying, your data is the product.

For tools processing files:

Your PDF goes to their server

Your image gets stored temporarily (or permanently)

Your "private" document passes through their infrastructure

For European users and anyone handling EU citizen data —
this is a GDPR landmine hiding in plain sight.

 What Client-Side Processing Actually Means

Browser-based processing means the tool runs
entirely in JavaScript inside your browser tab.

Your file:

Gets read by your browser (not a server)

Gets processed in browser memory

Gets downloaded back to you

Zero network requests for the actual file data.
Zero server storage.
Zero third-party data processing.

 The Technical Reality

Here's what a client-side PDF compressor looks like:

// File never leaves the browser
const file = event.target.files[0];
const arrayBuffer = await file.arrayBuffer();

// Processing happens in browser memory
const compressed = await compressPDF(arrayBuffer);

// Download directly to user's device
const blob = new Blob([compressed]);
const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);

Compare this to server-side processing:

// File uploaded to external server
const formData = new FormData();
formData.append('file', file);

// Your file travels across the internet
await fetch('https://their-server.com/compress', {
 method: 'POST',
 body: formData // 👈 GDPR problem here
});

The difference is one network request.
The legal difference is enormous.

 What I Built

I built OmniWebTool (omniwebtool.com) specifically
to solve this.

30+ tools. All client-side. All free.

PDF compressor — files never leave your browser

Image compressor — same principle

Password generator — generated locally, never transmitted

VAT Calculator — EU-27 rates, no data sent anywhere

IBAN Validator — validated client-side using MOD 97

Tech stack:

Next.js 14 (954 static pages, 4 languages)

All tool logic in client-side TypeScript

Zero API calls for file processing

Cloudflare Workers for edge delivery

Cookiebot CMP for GDPR consent

 The GDPR Argument for Client-Side Tools

Under GDPR:

Article 25: Privacy by design and default

Article 32: Appropriate technical measures

Article 28: Data processor agreements

Client-side processing satisfies all three
simultaneously. No data processor agreement needed
when there's no data processor.

This is why browser-based tools aren't just
a nice feature for privacy-conscious users —
they're the legally correct architecture for
anyone handling EU citizen data.

 The Designer's Outcome

My friend switched to OmniWebTool.
No more unauthorized data processors.
No more GDPR exposure.
Same result — compressed PDF — in the same time.

The only difference: her files stayed on her computer.

omniwebtool.com — free, GDPR-compliant,
browser-based tools in EN/DE/FR/ES

Built by Ovrion (ovrion.xyz)

What tools do you use that you've never checked
the privacy policy for?

Building for Europe: What nobody tells you about GDPR, AdSense, and multilingual Next.js SEO

## The Problem Nobody Talks About

Building a web product for European users isn't
just translating your UI. It's a completely different
technical and legal architecture.

I found this out while building OmniWebTool
(omniwebtool.com) — a free toolkit for European users.
Here's everything I wish someone had told me.

## Mistake 1: Treating i18n as an Afterthought

Most tutorials show you how to add translations to
an existing app. That's backwards for SEO.

URL slugs must be localized FROM DAY 1:
❌ Wrong:
/de/tools/calculator/vat-calculator
(English slug in German path)

✅ Correct:
/de/tools/calculator/mehrwertsteuer-rechner
(German slug — what Germans actually search)

"Mehrwertsteuerrechner" gets 60K searches/month in
Germany. "vat-calculator" gets zero.

If you launch with English slugs and change them later,
you lose all indexing history. Build localized slugs
from day 1 or pay the price later.

## Mistake 2: Thinking GDPR is Just a Cookie Banner

For AdSense to work in Europe you need:

Google-certified CMP (Consent Management Platform)

IAB TCF v2.2 compliance

GA4 blocked until explicit consent given

"Reject All" as visible as "Accept All"

I used Cookiebot — Google-certified, free under 100 pages.

Without this: AdSense rejection + GDPR violation risk.
The cookie banner alone isn't enough.

## Mistake 3: Canonical Tags in Multilingual Sites

Each language version is its OWN canonical.

_// WRONG — pointing DE page to EN canonical_
<link rel="canonical" href="https://site.com/en/tools/vat" />

_// CORRECT — DE page points to itself_
<link rel="canonical"
 href="https://site.com/de/tools/mehrwertsteuer-rechner" />

I had 40+ pages flagged as "Alternate page with proper
canonical tag" in GSC because of this mistake.

## Mistake 4: localePrefix: 'as-needed' Breaks Things

next-intl default is 'as-needed' which removes /en/
from English URLs. Sounds clean. Causes redirect loops
on Cloudflare Workers.

// Use this instead:
export const routing = defineRouting({
 locales: ['en', 'de', 'fr', 'es'],
 defaultLocale: 'en',
 localePrefix: 'always' // keeps /en/ in URL
})

GSC flagged /en and /en/tools/calculator/vat-calculator
as redirect errors until I fixed this.

## Mistake 5: Content vs Tools

Every tool page needs 600+ words of content. Not optional.

Google doesn't rank interactive widgets. It ranks pages.
Your tool page IS a content page that embeds a tool.

The highest-traffic pages on OmniWebTool aren't the
tools themselves — they're the explanation pages that
surround them.

"Wie rechnet man die Mehrwertsteuer aus?"
(How do you calculate VAT?) — people search this
question, not just the calculator.

Build the content. The tool is the CTA.

## Mistake 6: Cloudflare Workers + Next.js 14 Runtime

This cost me 6 hours of debugging. 😭

// middleware.ts — DO NOT declare runtime
// Next.js 14 middleware is edge by default
// This line BREAKS the build:
export const runtime = 'edge'; // ❌ Remove this

// Page components — use experimental-edge, NOT edge
export const runtime = 'experimental-edge'; // ✅
// 'edge' is Next.js 15+ only

Build command that works:

npx opennextjs-cloudflare build

Deploy command:

npx wrangler deploy

## What Actually Moves the Needle in Week 1

After 7 days:

954 static pages across 4 languages

87 pages indexed so far

900+ GSC impressions (German keywords first)

Listed on top sites

German keywords showed impressions before English ones.
European users are underserved. Local language content
ranks faster in local markets.

## The VAT Calculator Insight

Built the VAT Calculator first — covers all EU-27
countries with reverse calculation.

"Mehrwertsteuerrechner" — 60K searches/month Germany
"Calculateur TVA" — 40K searches/month France
"Calculadora IVA" — 35K searches/month Spain

Finance keywords = $3-12 CPC on AdSense.
One localized calculator is worth more than
30 generic English tools.

## Links

Live: omniwebtool.com

Builder: Ovrion (ovrion.xyz)

Previous post: [Cloudflare + Next.js deployment guide]

Questions welcome about multilingual SEO,
GDPR compliance, or Cloudflare Workers setup. Peace 🙌✌

 What I Built

OmniWebTool (omniwebtool.com) — a free, privacy-focused digital
tools platform built specifically for European users.

30+ tools running 100% in your browser. No file uploads. No server
processing. No signup. GDPR compliant from day one.

 The Problem I Was Solving

Every major online tool (Smallpdf, ILovePDF, TinyPNG) uploads your
files to their servers. For European users dealing with GDPR, this
is a genuine concern — especially when compressing confidential
PDFs or processing sensitive images.

I wanted to build tools that process everything client-side.
Your files never leave your device.

 Tech Stack

Next.js 14 (App Router, SSG — 272 static pages generated)

TypeScript strict mode

Tailwind CSS mobile-first

next-intl — 4 languages from day 1 (EN/DE/FR/ES)

Cloudflare Workers — edge deployment via OpenNext

Cookiebot CMP — GDPR consent, IAB TCF v2.2 compliant

 Why Cloudflare Workers for European Users

European users need fast tools. Pakistani founder, European
audience — server location matters.

Cloudflare Workers runs on edge nodes in Frankfurt, Amsterdam,
Paris, Madrid. TTFB for European users: 20-50ms. Free tier
handles massive traffic with unlimited requests.

Zero cold starts. Automatic SSL. Global edge network.

 The Deployment Setup

After trying Cloudflare Pages (didn't suit this setup),
switched to Cloudflare Workers with OpenNext adapter.

Build command:
npx opennextjs-cloudflare build

Deploy command:
npx wrangler deploy

Root directory:
/

This combination handles Next.js 14 with middleware,
server components, and next-intl routing perfectly on
Cloudflare's edge network.

 The i18n Architecture

4 languages live simultaneously from day 1 — not as an afterthought.

/tools/calculator/vat-calculator (English)
/de/tools/calculator/mehrwertsteuer-rechner (German)
/fr/tools/calculator/calculateur-tva (French)
/es/tools/calculator/calculadora-iva (Spanish)

URL slugs are fully localized — not just the UI.
"compress-pdf" becomes "pdf-komprimieren" in German.
This is critical for local keyword ranking.

Used next-intl with App Router. Middleware handles locale
detection and routing automatically.

 The Middleware Problem on Cloudflare

This took several hours to solve.

Cloudflare Workers requires edge runtime. Next.js 14 middleware
with next-intl caused runtime conflicts when declaring edge
explicitly.

Fix: Remove
export const runtime = 'edge'
from middleware.ts
entirely — Next.js 14 middleware runs on edge by default.
Declaring it explicitly causes a build conflict.

For page components, use:

export const runtime = 'experimental-edge';

Not
'edge'
— that's Next.js 15+ syntax only.

 SEO Architecture

Every tool page is a content page that happens to embed
an interactive tool. Not the other way around.

272 static pages across 4 languages

JSON-LD schema on every page (WebApplication + FAQ + HowTo)

Localized URL slugs per language

Hreflang tags from day 1

Sitemap submitted to GSC and Bing within 24 hours

Result after 3 days: 104 referring domains already discovered.

 The VAT Calculator — Priority #1

Highest search volume tool for European market:

"Mehrwertsteuerrechner" — 60K searches/month in Germany

"Calculateur TVA" — 40K searches/month in France

"Calculadora IVA" — 35K searches/month in Spain

Built with all EU-27 VAT rates, reverse calculation,
and country auto-detect from browser locale.

This single tool in German is worth more AdSense revenue
than 30 generic English tools combined.

 GDPR Implementation

EU publishers need a Google-certified CMP for AdSense.
Used Cookiebot — IAB TCF v2.2 compliant.

Critical rules:

GA4 blocked until user gives explicit consent

AdSense blocked until user gives explicit consent

"Reject All" button equally visible as "Accept All"

No pre-ticked boxes

No dark patterns

Without this — automatic AdSense rejection for EU publishers.

 Results After 3 Days

272 pages indexed across 4 languages

104 referring domains discovered

GSC and Bing Webmaster verified

Sitemaps submitted

Listed on AlternativeTo and SaaSHub

 What's Next

Expand from 30 to 200+ tools

Target 300K monthly visitors in 12 months

Apply for AdSense after 500+ GSC organic clicks

Product Hunt launch at 60+ tools

 Links

Live: omniwebtool.com visit

Builder: Ovrion (ovrion.xyz) visit

Happy to answer questions about:

Cloudflare Workers + OpenNext + Next.js 14 setup

next-intl middleware on Cloudflare edge

European SEO with localized URL slugs

GDPR compliance for AdSense approval

Client-side tool architecture for privacy
