Slowing Down to Enjoy the Journey

Hello,
I’m sorry to have kept you all waiting for so long. I needed some time off this past week, and as a result, my post got delayed.

Let me update you on what I’ve been up to. I’m still working on responsive design, but this week, I added two new tools to my toolkit. The first is SASS, and the second is cross-browser and cross-device testing. While I’m just starting with these, I’m excited to experiment and work with them.

For cross-browser and cross-device testing, there are many great tools to explore, like BrowserStack, LambdaTest, and Responsively. I’m sure there are many others out there too!

So yes, this might seem like a bit of a boring update on my coding journey this past week, but now it’s time for our philosophical discussion.

Many times, I feel like I tend to make even the simplest things complicated by trying too hard. I keep telling myself that to get better, I need to do more, create more, and dedicate more time to improving my skills. While this sounds great, it often comes with drawbacks.

I find myself feeling like there’s never enough time, even though I’m tracking every minute and second, trying to cram millions of tasks into a single day. This micromanagement doesn’t make me more productive—it just makes me feel constrained.

We often hear that “life is too short,” and interpret it as needing to accomplish more in less time. But if life is too short, shouldn’t we focus on enjoying the journey rather than rushing to the destination?

If we savour every moment—the challenges and the triumphs alike—we’ll have lived a fulfilling life, regardless of whether we reach our ultimate goals. Imagine someone asking, “Did you see that beautiful lake on your way here?” Would you rather say, “No, I was too busy focusing on getting here,” or “Yes, and it was breathtaking”?

So, let’s remind ourselves to look after our well-being. Take breaks, drink water, and enjoy the simple joy of being alive.

Sorry, I got a bit lost

Hello, fellow travelers on the path,

I return, and thank you for your patience. Today, I want to share my recent progress and a few lessons I’ve picked up along the way. But first, let’s address a kind of “flu” that I think many of us catch on this journey: the flu of comparison, impatience, and rushing.

The symptoms? They’re subtle but persistent: the urge to move faster, comparing oneself to others, losing focus on the task at hand, and always looking ahead without appreciating where we are right now. I’ve fallen victim to this flu many times in my learning. I’m in recovery, I believe, and my remedy has been a lot of reflection.

Instead of focusing on what others know or what I think I lack, I’m practicing stepping back to recognize what I have. And yes, there’s always something. Our greatest asset, the present moment, is available to all of us. We can choose to use it for growth or for worry. Each of us has our own unique journey, a story that unfolds in its own time. So why rush? There’s a beauty in pacing ourselves, in valuing the challenges and struggles as they come. They may be difficult, but they’re often our greatest teachers.

So, with that said, let’s return to the reason for this post—my progress in learning CSS responsive design. Recently, I came across a wonderful guide by Josh W Comeau, An Interactive Guide to CSS Grid. It’s both clear and immersive—a real gem for anyone wrestling with CSS Grid. I also found a fun way to grasp Flexbox concepts through FlexBox Zombies by Mastery Games. It’s an engaging way to play and learn, and I highly recommend it if you want to sharpen your skills.

And with that, I’ll sign off for now. May we all continue to learn at our own pace and in good health.

Goodbye, and may there be peace in our world.

Day 3 step

Do not hesitate to take the step despite the hesitation

 A bit of history

Today I completed and submitted my solution for a small project I was working on Frontend Mentor. I learned some new concepts and tried them in my code. The most important aspect was that I reached out to someone out there today. My coding journey has been solo so far and I have never really tried networking. They might or might not reply to my message but I am happy I made an effort and this is what truly counts for me.

 Goal for the task

My goal was to complete my project and submit the solution.

 Steps taken

Tailored the project to be responsive on different screen sizes.

Tested the result in the browser.

Used version control to commit all the changes.

Submitted the final solution.

 Challenges Faced

As such I did not face any challenge, but what I find a bit difficult is to record everything in the README.md in the end. I am a bit lazy regarding documentation and need to work on this lazy habit of mine.

 Lessons Learned

Do not hesitate to reach out when you are stuck. You think you will get laughed at and even if that happens what is the harm in making someone merry? Laugh with them. Learn and laugh together.

Day two step

Every day is a new lesson.

 A bit of history

Today marks another step in my journey as I continue learning and growing in coding. Each day brings new insights and challenges, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn.

 Task of the day

I focused on a new project from Frontend Mentor, diving deeper into the concepts I've been practising. Mainly focused on how to extract design details using Figma.

 Goal for the task

My goal was to implement the design effectively and explore Figma to enhance my coding skills.

 Steps taken

Analyzed the project requirements and design specifications.

Broke down the tasks into manageable parts.

Worked on the HTML structure and CSS styling.

 Challenges Faced

I struggled with implementing responsive design using the grid layout but took it as a learning opportunity to improve my understanding.

 Solution/Outcome

I researched solutions online and found helpful resources that clarified my confusion. I’m feeling more confident about responsive design now!

 Lessons Learned

Today, I learned the importance of seeking help when faced with challenges and the value of persistence in overcoming obstacles.
There is no such thing as a failed effort.

This moment.

Every moment is a chance for us to start new.

 A bit of history

I graduated from university a year ago with a diploma in IT. I applied for a lot of entry-level positions without any success. There is still a lot that I need to learn. Failure did disappoint me in the beginning, but I realised that not knowing much means I have a lot to learn and a lot of room to grow. A lot of coding to practice, so there is no room for regret and sorrow. I am quite introverted, but I think I will be alright with writing, so let us start.

 Task of the day

Today, I started my first blog on Dev.to to document my coding journey!

 Goal for the task

My goal is to reflect on my progress in coding and to document what I learn each week, especially where I fail.

"Failure is a great teacher if one attends its class instead of avoiding it."

 Steps taken

Created an account on Dev.to.

Explored the editor and basic Markdown syntax.

Wrote my first post structure with my friend's guidance.

 Challenges Faced

Navigating Markdown was new to me, but I quickly picked up the basics!

 Solution/Outcome

I’m excited to keep documenting each step and learning Markdown as I go.

 Lessons Learned

Today, I learned the importance of consistent reflection and how Markdown works on Dev.to.
