Turn a 2-Hour YouTube Tutorial Into Text You Can Ctrl+F

Disclosure: I am connected to the team that runs these bots.

Every developer has done this. You remember a tutorial had the exact flag you need. You open the video, drag the slider around, play ten seconds, drag again. Fifteen minutes later you find it, and it was at 1:12:40.

Video is a bad format for reference. Text is a good one. So the fix is to turn the video into text once and keep the text.

 What I do

I paste the YouTube link into a Telegram bot, @YoutubeTranscriptFreeBot (https://t.me/YoutubeTranscriptFreeBot). A few moments later the full text of the video arrives in the chat. For long ones it also sends a .txt file, which is what I actually keep.

There is a second bot with the same job, @TubeToTextBot (https://t.me/TubeToTextBot), if the first one is busy. Details are on this page: https://flowdoski.com/rasshifrovka-youtube.html

Disclosure: I work on these bots. They are free, with no sign-up and no extension to install.

 A small workflow

tutorials/
 2026-11-02-docker-networking.txt
 2026-11-05-postgres-indexes.txt

Drop each .txt into a folder you already search. Then:

grep -ril "healthcheck" tutorials/
grep -n "depends_on" tutorials/2026-11-02-docker-networking.txt

Note that the text has no timestamps, so grep tells you what the speaker said but not at which minute. When I need to see the screen, I search for a nearby phrase, remember roughly how far into the talk it was, and jump there in the video.

 Where it is useful

Conference talks. Read the talk in ten minutes and watch only the demo.

Long courses. Find the lesson that covers one topic.

Podcasts with a guest you want to quote. Copy the exact sentence.

Your own recordings. Meetings, standups, design reviews.

 The limits

YouTube, TikTok and Instagram links up to 3 hours.

Uploaded files are capped at 20 MB (Telegram's limit for bots).

It is spoken words only. Code on the screen is not captured, so commands the speaker types but does not say aloud will not appear.

Technical terms and product names can come out wrong, for example a library name split into two ordinary words. Check anything you plan to paste into a terminal.

The language is detected automatically, and no translation is done.

Why a bot and not a browser extension

Pure taste. I already have Telegram open on every device, so a bot means no setup. If you live in the terminal, you may prefer a script. For me, pasting a link into a chat is fast enough that I actually do it.

 Try it

Pick a talk you watched last month and cannot fully remember. Get the text, search it for the one thing you half recall.

Bots: https://t.me/YoutubeTranscriptFreeBot , https://t.me/TubeToTextBot
Page: https://flowdoski.com/rasshifrovka-youtube.html
