You are at the beginning of your freelancing career?

Did you choose your niche yet?

No? And if you did, are sure you choose the right one?

Your niche is the main thing that determinates your success

Today I will share with you how to choose the right niche for you

So, let's begin

Choosing your niche is one of the first things you need to do when you start freelancing

Why?

Because you can't sell your product to everyone

Your future clients are more likely to hire you if you worked with other clients who are just like them in the past

Also by having a niche you are able to charge more

Why?

Because you can become an expert a lot faster when you work with a specific group of people

Ok, great, now that we talked a bit about the benefits of choosing a niche let's begin with the main topic of this thread:

When it comes to choosing a niche to work with most people overthink this

A LOT

And they waste a shit ton of time wondering about what niche they should work with

When in reality all you have to do is think about the people you want to work with

Yes, that's how you begin

You create a list with 3-5 specific groups of people you want to work with

Something like "Gumroad course creators who sell on Twitter" or "Lead gen agency owners"

After you created a list with 3-5 niches you want to work with it's time for research

For this part, you need to learn more about each niche from your list

How do you do that?

By going on Twitter, talking with people in that niche, getting on calls, joining communities, and more

The main goal for this stage is to find out more about a niche and see:

Where you can find them
If they need your service
If they can afford it

Now you continue to do this for all of your niches from your list and by the end of this you should only have one or two left

For these 2 you will do some testing

How?

Well, you will send some outreach messages

What better way to test if a niche needs your offer than doing outreach?

You don't have to put a crazy amount of work into this

Just send a couple of messages to some potential clients from that specific niche

Try to do this for 7 days or so (message around 100 people to have some data to work with)

Then you just need to test the data

See which niche got:

More replies
Closed more deals
Made your more money

And take a final decision

Now, I want to clear some things too...

There is no such thing as an "oversaturated niche"

Trust me

If you know what you're doing you will always make money

Yes, ALWAYS

So instead of focusing on finding a niche that is not saturated, focus on becoming good at your skill

Stop overthinking and start working!

My entire journey from the past 2 years

2 years ago I decided that I want to change my life

Since then I:

Learned how to code and design
Built a 40k followers Twitter audience
Made over $6k online
Started a freelancing business
Today I want to share with you all my entire journey

Everything started in the last week of 2019

I was in my first year of high school and my uncle started talking to me about programming

He was already a senior web developer with over 10 years of experience

At that time I had already written a few lines of code at school in C++ but I had no idea what Web Development was

He told me that I should give this a try and told me to learn Python first

In the first week of 2020, I started learning Python

I searched on Reddit for some tutorials I could follow and someone recommended me Codecademy

I went on their website and started coding

For one week all I did was code on there

I fell in love with it in less than a day

3 months later I was still doing some small Python projects in my free time

Then the Pandemic came

Suddenly I had a lot of free time

So I called my uncle and he told me to continue learning Web Development

So I went to freeCodeCamp and started learning HTML and CSS

At that time I was spending a lot of time on Reddit, talking with other developers

One day I found a subreddit with developers from my country

I joined it and decided to share my journey there

At the end of that post, I said that I'm looking for work to learn more about web development and gain more experience

A few hours later a developer that had a start-up messaged me and said that they would love to work with me

The next day we talked on the phone

I was excited to work with them

They gave me a few tasks which I solved in a few hours and I got hired

During the next 3 months, I learned a lot from that job

From JavaScript to Docker and how to work with Git

After 3 months I left that job since the school was about to start and I wanted to focus more on that

At that time I wasn't coding that much anymore and my motivation faded away

One day I decided to join Twitter since lots of developers were talking about it

So I joined Tech Twitter and started documenting my journey

I was writing about the concepts I was learning about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

In the beginning, no one saw my tweets but I was happy to be part of a community

Slowly I realized that I would like to create content so I bought a Twitter course and started growing my account

This (gumroad.com/a/886314099) is the Twitter course I bought (highly recommended)

By the end of 2020, I reached 1000 followers

I was already building lots of projects with JavaScript at that time while creating content on Twitter

3 months later and I made my first income online

How?

Through affiliate marketing. Why?

I realized that everyone was asking me what courses they could use to grow on Twitter, to learn Web Design and Web Development

By that time I already had around 6k followers on Twitter

For 30 days I continued doing that and hit $1000 in sales

One month later I released my first info product, an eBook for Web Developers

Over 50 people Pre-Ordered it and after one month it made almost $600 in revenue (with almost 80 customers)

Since then, until August I continued doing this

Learned more about marketing, audience building and coding while making around $700 every month from Twitter

Then in August while I was in Greece with my family it hit me

I realized this:

I can't sell courses on Twitter for the rest of my life

I was seeing people make what I made in a month from one freelancing project

So I decided that I will start freelancing from now

And that's what I did. Once I got home from Greece I got on a call with @DONVESH

He gave a clear strategy that I could use to start freelancing and well

It worked

After 2 weeks I closed my first big client in exchange for a testimonial

So since then until now this is what I've been focusing on

Design, Twitter, affiliate marketing, my own info products

I still got a lot more things to achieve and I'm not where I want to be

But I achieved a lot more than most people around my age this

How to start freelancing as a beginner

You have no idea what it is and how to do it

I was there too, and after doing a lot of research I learned how to do it

Now I want I save you the research time with this

This is how to start freelancing as a beginner

First, let's clarify what a freelancer is

A freelancer is a person who provides a service to other

That could be:

Web Design
Web Development
Facebook ads
Email marketing
And more

So, you start freelancing by selling a service to other

But there is more

The first thing you need to do is choose what service you want to provide

I think that most of you all already know that but if you don't do this:

Think about something you are naturally good at or something you enjoy doing

If you're good at writing sell copywriting

If you're good at design sell web design or graphic design

It's as simple as that

After you choose your skill you need to learn that

Spend no more than 3 months on this

Study from everything you can find online

Youtube
Online courses
Twitter
Get mentors

You can't offer a service to others if you can't bring them results

So first focus on learning a skill

After you did that it's time to choose your niche and craft your offer

Why do you need a nice?

Because you can't sell your service to everyone

You need to target a specific group of people and learn as much as you can about their problems

So think about who do you want to work with and choose that niche

Keep in mind that the people you want to work with need to afford your service

After you choose your niche it's time to do the market research

This is one of the most important parts of your freelancing career to be fair

You need to spend some time to find out what your potential clients struggle with

Talk with people from your niche
Study how they run their businesses
Use Reddit

Stuff like that

Your goal is to find a big problem that those people have and that you can solve with your service

After you did that, half of the job is done

The next step you need to take is to create your offer

So this looks something like this

"I will X achieve Y with Z"

Where X is the niche you're targeting

Y is the problem you're solving

And Z is the service you're offering

After you have your offer done it's time to create a personal website

I think this is crucial because you need to have a place where you can show:

Your offer
Some of your work
The testimonials you'll get in the future

Don't spend too much time on this one, just build something with Carrd in a few hours

After you did that, it's time for the outreach

After you read all of these threads you are ready to start freelancing

All you have to do is now is take action

If you follow the "roadmap" I gave you here I can guarantee that you'll succeed as a freelancer

Do you want to become a freelancer?

Everyone wants to do that now

But no one knows how to begin and how to do it the right way

There are a lot of things I wish I knew earlier when I first started my journey

Here are 7 tips for the newbie freelancers

Get a mentor

This is key when you're just starting out

Having a good mentor can save you 6 months of research if used the right way

The goal is to find someone who is just a few steps ahead of you and learn from them

When looking for a mentor, create a connection first

Don't DM someone and ask them to be your mentor right away

This is not how you get a mentor

And be willing to spend money on this

Outreach

This is the action that gets your clients

And this at the same time the most important action in the beginning

If you don't do outreach you don't get clients

Work for free

This is one of the best things you can do when you first start freelancing

Because let's face it

You have no social proof

No past work

And no one knows you

You can't expect someone to hire you if you have no experience

This is why working for free is...

Focus on the things that matter

This is one of the most overlooked things when you're first starting out

Everyone is focusing on creating the perfect portfolio, or the perfect offer, or the perfect outreach script

But in reality, this won't get you more clients

(at least in the beginning)

What will get you clients in the beginning is outreach

This is why you need to create everything as fast as you can and start doing outreach as soon as possible

You will tha

Build a portfolio

Even though I said that focusing on building a perfect portfolio in the beginning is bad, you still need to have a portfolio

Why?

Because you need to have a place where you can show your past work and your testimonials

If you create a portfolio you can...

just redirect all of your potential clients there

Where they can see your:

Offer
Past work
Social proof

And they will be more likely to hire you after that

Also, the SEO benefit is huge

You can literally get clients through SEO without doing anything

Join a private community of freelancers

Another thing that helped me a lot in the beginning

Once you join a community of freelancers you get access to people who are a lot more experienced with you and who can always help you out

And this will save you a lot of time

The price that you'll pay for that community is nothing compared to the time it saves you

The community I joined is Utopia and it quickly became my go-to resource

Stay consistent

You might not see results in the first few months

But that is ok, especially if you're working for free

Your goal in the beginning is to get as much social proof as possible

And it's also one of the most important steps of your freelancing journey

Once you do that, it gets easier

Now, let's continue with the good stuff

So a few weeks ago I reached out to someone on Twitter

He liked some of my web design work so I DMed him to let him know that if he ever needs help with web design I'm happy to help

After that, we talked a bit more about my service and how it can help him

We didn't end up working at that time but he said that he will refer me to others in the future

And guess what?

He did and that's how I got my client

He referred me to the client that I closed

Then he created a group with us, and I started talking with the client

He was looking for a landing page for his Gumroad product

I sent him my portfolio website

Then we talked about the price and the payment

After we agreed on that the deal was closed

Now, let's analyze why I closed this client

This is really simple

Because for 3 months all I did was for free in exchange for testimonials and social proof

This helped me create a name for myself which lead to that referral

Also, the past work and the testimonials I have listed on my portfolio website helped a lot

This is why I tell you all to work for free at the beginning

This is KEY

This is how you can close your first paid client too

Sure, it's not something that happens in the short term

You need to play the long term and not give up after one week

If you do this, I can guarantee that you will close your first paid client in 6 months

Everything I know about outreach

Doing outreach is key as a freelancer

With outreach alone, I got 10 clients in the last 2 months

Here is everything I know about outreach

First thing first, what is outreach?

Outreach is the act of sending messages to people

(in our case potential clients)

So, with outreach, you close clients as a freelancer

Yes, you might need to get on a call with them, but that leads from the outreach too

There are a lot of ways you can outreach

Twitter DMs
Cold emails
Instagram DMs
And more

The most important part is choosing one of them

and STICKING WITH IT

Don't try 5 methods of doing outreach at the same time

Choose one to begin with and master it

After you choose your medium of doing outreach you need to create a script

Don't use a template you find on the internet

Why?

Because everyone is probably using it

Try to create something of your own

Here are some things to keep in mind:

Start with a compliment, you are more likely to get a reply this way
Keep it short, people won't read a long message especially if they don't know you
Create a clear call to action, make what they need to next clear for the client
Add social proof (if you have)

Now, you have a script, but who do you DM?

For my outreach, I recommend quality over quantity

So only DM specific people. People who are your ideal clients

Since I use Twitter to do my outreach I find potential clients while scrolling through my timeline

After you find the potential clients, you need to do your research

Don't skip this part

Read some of the content that person created

Click the links they have in their bio

You don't need to spend more than 15 minutes on this, but make sure you do it

Then you need to build rapport with the client

What does this mean?

You need to build a connection with them

How do you do that?

By engaging with their content

Make sure they see your face a couple of times before you DM them

Only after you do this for a few days, DM them

After you send them the DM way a few days and then FOLLOW UP

This is key and so many people don't do it

I got most of my clients after following up

Don't stop until you get a reply if it is a no

Because at the end of your day your goal is to a reply

One thing that you can do to be more likely to get a reply is to give value for free

If you do email marketing send them one email for free

Don't ask for anything back, tell them to try it out

Make it easy for them to say yes

Lastly, remember that as with everything practice makes perfect

You'll change your script with time

You'll get more and better replies with time

But that improvement only comes with practice

Aim to send one DM per day at the beginning

How I would learn how to code again from 0 (the right way)

The first thing you need to do is decide what you want to learn

I can't decide that for you, but I can guide you

There are a lot of different fields you can choose to learn (Machine learning, web, mobile, and more)

What you need to do is research all of these fields...

until you found one that you enjoy

After you did that, you need to choose a programming language to learn for that field

For example, if you choose Machine learning you should learn Python

Or if you choose web development you should learn HTML and CSS

Now, after you know exactly what you want to learn we can start the learning phase

The first thing you want to do is create a Twitter account

Why?

Because you will need to document your entire journey here

You'll write a tweet about each new concept that you learn

After that, you need to find a Youtube tutorial on the programming language that you need to learn

Just search something like "how to learn [the programming language you want to learn]"

You don't need a complex video

Choose the first one you can find and watch it

Yes, I said watch it

Because this is what you need to do the first time

Just watch it, after you did that, watch it once again but now also code along and take notes

After you did that, it's time for some practice

Go on leetcode.com and solve some easy problems in the programming language you're learning

If you don't know how to solve one of them, don't panic

Break them down and use Google a lot

Do this for a week or two

After you finished most of the easy problems from there, it's time for a small project

To begin this I recommend again, following a tutorial that builds a project (a simple one)

So, you will first build the project following that tutorial

But after each feature you build...

You'll build it again alone

And as always, if you get stuck, use Google or the actual tutorial (but only if you really need to)

After you finished the whole project, you'll build it again from 0 alone

You might feel overwhelmed but that is normal, remember that this is why...

you build every feature separately, on your own

Again, if you get stuck just use Google or the actual tutorial

By this point you should already know the project pretty well

That's why what you need to do next is a bit harder

You'll need to add more features to that project

Yes, that might sound intimidating at first

But if you think for a few minutes about features you could add, you'll get tons of ideas trust me

Try to implement small features, not something big

This might be hard at first, but it's the thing that will teach you the most

You'll continue using the same strategy for 2-3 more project until you feel comfortable with building stuff on your own

After that, it's time for some real-life experience

And here you have 2 options:

Open source
Freelancing

Let's start with open source

For this one, you'll go on Google and search

"open-source projects for beginners in [the programming language you're using]"

Go over some of them, and after you found something interesting contribute to it

Most of them have some docs where you can find out how to do that

Do that for a few weeks and you'll see your skills improve

Freelancing

This one is a bit harder but you can still get around it

Follow the strategy from that thread and work for 2-3 people to learn and practice more

Don't expect to get paid, you're doing this only to gain experience

After this phase, you'll be pretty confident in your coding skills

So you can continue learning more languages, applying to jobs, doing freelancing, or working on your projects

But remember that the learning journey never ends

You'll learn something new every day
