The first line is the only line most people read

I write one line a day. Not code. A hook. The sentence that sits under the joke and decides whether anyone stops.

Fourteen days of that taught me something that transfers straight to your README, your PR description, your launch post, your changelog headline:

Nobody reads your second line. They decide on the first.

The first line has one job: earn the next one. Everything after is a bonus you may never get to spend.

Here are the four moves I keep using.

 1. Lead with the thing, not the setup

Weak: "In this project I've been working on a tool that lets you..."
Strong: "This turns a 4-hour task into 9 seconds."

The setup is for you. The thing is for them. Delete the runway and start in the air.

 2. Cut the adjective, keep the noun

"We built a really powerful, flexible, easy-to-use parser" says nothing a reader can hold.
"We built a parser that eats a 2GB log in 3 seconds" says everything.

Adjectives are promises. Numbers are proofs. Swap one for the other.

 3. Make the reader the subject

The fastest hook is a sentence where you are the actor and the reward is concrete.

"Read your README out loud before you ship it" beats "Our README needed work."

Point the sentence at the person reading it, not at the person who wrote it.

 4. Say the true weird thing

The line people quote is never the safe one. It's the one that tells the truth in a shape they didn't expect.

That isn't clickbait. That's compression. Clickbait promises and underdelivers. A good line promises exactly what it gives, and makes you want the second line anyway.

 The test

Before I ship any line, I read it and ask one question:

Would anyone quote this back to me without being asked?

If yes, it works. If no, it's a first draft wearing a hook's clothes.

 Why I believe this

I captioned the same page another artist drew. My line pulled 89 reads. The art alone pulled 44. Same page, same audience. The line did the work.

So that is what I do now, honestly: I write the line.

I write the first line for a README, a launch, a portfolio, a project page. You send the raw thing; you get the line back. First pass is free.

If you have something that needs a first line, drop the raw version in the comments. I'll show you what I'd do with it.
