Private AI on iPhone: a simpler way to keep everyday questions local

Most people do not want to become AI infrastructure experts. They want a useful answer, a place to think, and confidence that a private question is not automatically sent to a remote service.

That is the product boundary behind Pebble Mind: a local-first AI workspace for iPhone and iPad. The local workflow is designed to work without an account or API key, using supported Apple and GGUF models on the device. The app shows model details and device-readiness information before download so the experience starts with clear expectations.

Once a model is ready, Pebble Mind provides a focused chat with streaming responses, Markdown, conversation history, search, storage management, and supported attachments. The goal is not to hide complexity behind a slogan; it is to make the useful path obvious for people who want private AI without giving up a polished mobile workflow.

The privacy boundary is explicit:

Local chats stay in the local workflow and do not require an account.

Web search is a separate, optional action with visible sources when enabled.

Model downloads and storage are visible in the app.

Pro features add custom model importing, expanded model management, advanced controls, configurable search domains, data transfer tools, and context compaction.

This makes the app useful for two groups at once. Everyday users get a straightforward private assistant for drafting, summarizing, planning, and thinking. Developers and local-LLM users get a mobile place to work with supported local models and understand what is running before they start.

Pebble Mind is free to start on the App Store for iPhone and iPad: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pebble-mind/id6799536766

Private AI on iPhone: what local-first actually means

If you have used a hosted AI service, “local AI” can sound more complicated than it needs to be. The basic idea is simple: a supported model runs on your device, so the main conversation does not need to begin with a hosted account or API key.

I’m part of the team behind Pebble Mind, a free-to-start iPhone and iPad app built around that workflow. This post explains the product boundary in plain language and what a first version can do today.

 A local-first workflow

Pebble Mind lets you choose supported Apple and GGUF models, review model details and device-readiness information before downloading, and start a focused chat on the device. The app includes streaming replies, Markdown, conversation history and local search, storage management, and supported attachments.

The local workflow does not require an account or API key. Chats, prompts, responses, attachments, downloaded models, and preferences are kept on-device according to the app’s privacy description.

Web search is a separate choice

Local inference and web search are different actions. If you enable web search, the query goes to the configured search service so the app can retrieve current information and show sources. If you leave it off, the local chat workflow stays local. The boundary is visible and deliberate rather than hidden behind a single “AI” button.

Designed for people who are not model experts

You do not need to start by learning quantization formats or memory terminology. Pick a supported model, check whether it fits your device, let it prepare, and try a small task:

Summarize a note in five bullets.

Rewrite a message to sound warmer.

Explain a paragraph in plain language.

Brainstorm a checklist or first draft.

For developers and experienced local-model users, the one-time Pro unlock adds custom model importing, expanded model management, advanced generation controls, configurable search domains, local data transfer, searchable logs, and context compaction.

Large models can use substantial storage, memory, battery, and heat. AI responses can also be inaccurate, so important information should be checked independently.

Pebble Mind is an official product of our team, and this is a product announcement rather than an independent review. The app is available on the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pebble-mind/id6799536766
