Stop unpaid scope creep with a 3-email change-order habit (and a one-sheet tracker)

Scope creep rarely starts as a fight. It starts as "can you also…?" — and if you say yes three times, you've donated a second project.

I used to eat those hours. Now I treat every out-of-scope ask as a change order, using three short emails:

 1) Scope confirm (before kickoff)

Lock deliverables, revision rounds, timeline, and fee. End with: anything not listed is a change order.

 2) Change-order (mid-project)

Acknowledge the ask. State that it's outside the signed scope. Quote effort, fee, and timeline impact. Wait for "Approved."

 3) Soft stop (already drifting)

Offer Option A (pay for extras now) or Option B (park for Phase 2). Calm, specific, no apology spiral.

I also keep a simple spreadsheet: one row per project, a change-order log that rolls up extra fees, and a dashboard of Active / Draft / Change pending.

If you want the pack ready-made (Excel / Google Sheets + the three scripts):

Checkout: https://whop.com/checkout/plan_LttD93GQi7qWh ($17)

Product page: https://whop.com/peng-digital-tools/products/freelancer-contract-scope-tracker-peng/

Launch code: SCOPE5 (25% off, limited stock)

Not legal advice — just a lightweight habit so freelancers get paid for what they actually ship.

A 3-email overdue invoice sequence (copy/paste) + a one-sheet tracker

Chasing payments as a freelance/dev contractor is worse than the bug that caused the invoice.

Here’s the sequence I reuse:

Day 0 (due date): Confirm they got it. Invoice #, amount, due date, pay link. One question: “Any blocker on AP?”

Day +7: Same facts + days overdue. Ask for a payment date or the right finance contact.

Day +14: Pause new work until settled. Still short and factual — no apology essay.

I keep status in a simple Excel aging sheet so nothing slips.

If you want the sheet + scripts already written: Freelancer Overdue Invoice Tracker — $19, use FIRST5 for $5 off as a new buyer:
https://whop.com/checkout/plan_rvO1MZBI8RQfT

What’s your day-+30 move if they still ghost?
