We stare in wide-eyed disbelief as Elon Musk's latest creation launches itself up a ramp that would put any Hot Wheels track to shame.

We can only watch this circus stunt with bated breath as a few tanks of compressed air, powered by technology borrowed from the SpaceX division, save the Tesla Roadster from becoming a very expensive pile of scrap metal.

What I Built after-flash PWA androidfirst

Apparently, we are approaching the point where it is easier to slop together an app than to find the right one in the store.

As someone who makes a living writing software, I’m not entirely sure I should be celebrating this. Anyway, I made a drawing app.

It is called After Flash.

One drawing tool. Three brush sizes. An eraser. Two layers: drawing and background color. No fill tool, no merging vectors. You can draw frame by frame, play the animation, and export individual drawings as SVG.

There is also an AI color palette generator. Give it a theme, a mood, or a few words, and it suggests 8 or 64 colors you can use directly in your drawing.

That’s roughly it. I wanted to draw, so I kept the distance between opening the app and drawing something reasonably short.

Another excavation

Years ago, I used to draw in Flash with a Wacom tablet connected to a Windows PC. The hardware setup was considerably more cumbersome, but I was productive. I wasn’t a particularly brilliant illustrator, although I did make a decent living as a graphic designer.

On my Android tablet, this little app brings that feeling back.

If you have read Vibe Archeologist: From Z80 Assembly to an 1859 Mudbrick House and Beyond, this probably sounds familiar. I keep digging through old experiences and finding things I want to use again.

Sometimes it is assembly. Sometimes it is a mudbrick house. This time, it is Flash.

Who would pay for it?

The plan is to keep the standalone app free, including an app-store version. The paid part would be embedding it into somebody else’s website.

A blog platform could let authors sketch an illustration directly inside the editor and insert it into their post. A diagram, a little character, something that is easier to draw than to explain in three paragraphs.

That is the integration I would sell, with the setup and support needed to fit it into an existing website.

I haven’t sold an integration yet. This is a business idea to test.

And yes, I just said making an app might become easier than finding one. Now I’m suggesting somebody might pay me to integrate mine.

Well, they might have other things to do.

Try After Flash

It feels great on my Android tablet, but I also drew a character in the browser on my MacBook using just the trackpad.

Then I gave that drawing to an AI image generator and asked for a small-town scene with similar characters. It reproduced the style frighteningly well. Describing the same style using only words would have been considerably harder, I think.

That was a separate experiment, not a built-in feature. But it revealed another use for this little app: quickly drawing your own visual reference for AI.

Apparently, everything is connected.

How I Built It

I read an article on prog.hu about Google’s AI app-building tools, opened Google AI Studio, and started describing the drawing experience I wanted.

The app uses React, TypeScript, and SVG. The palette generator calls Gemini 2.5 Flash. Yes, I used Flash to help bring back Flash. I didn’t plan that joke.

A surprising amount of my contribution came from remembering what I liked about drawing years ago: which tools I wanted within reach, and which features I could happily leave out.

Apparently, being old enough to remember the workflow is now part of the development stack.

Eventually, I hit AI Studio’s daily development limit while trying to improve the 64-color palettes. Fair enough. There was already something I could draw with.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

For an embeddable tool, being able to inspect the code and adapt it to different websites matters. I would also want the AI component to be replaceable, so the drawing tool does not depend on one provider forever.

There is still a loose end for this challenge: the current palette generator uses Gemini, which is not an open-weight model. Publishing the app’s source code alone does not fulfil the open-AI requirement. That part still needs to be addressed.

Meanwhile, I have a drawing tool I enjoy using again.

The AI helped build the app and can suggest the colors. The questionable drawing skills are still entirely mine.

Our news anchor, Mr. Slop Bolneroll, was created with Gemini, but how consistent I can keep him remains a mystery for the future.

single line CV: Creator of mordorjs and TifY, also a pipeline-operator fanatic. 🇭🇺

Somewhere along the way, I got tired of constantly producing CVs, and I don’t really want to tire anyone else by making them dive into a verbose one-page CV explaining what tech stacks I’ve encountered over the past 57 years. With more than 40 years of work experience, it’s easy to see that such a list would actually say very little about me.

Besides, one line of text can be sent anywhere. This line is actually a Markdown line — not by accident; here on dev.to I’ve grown quite fond of Markdown. But I think the line should work even without the attached links. At least it tells you that I’ve built not one but two things, and that I also have some kind of area of interest.

I’m not saying this method would work for everyone, or even that it would work for me if I had to look for a new job. But if I ever find myself in that situation, I’ll write a post about that too.

The next line is much more cryptic, and I don’t really want to go into the details here, but I feel it’s important to have it written down exactly like this. And yes, the parentheses really are meant to be that way. This is the message of my second planned book; the subject of my first planned book can, of course, be found in the first line. The only question is how many years it will take me to actually write these books.

These posts made me think that it would be worth putting my dev.to articles on my GitHub profile — but not simply in chronological order. I wanted to show the relationships between the articles, and between the articles and their related repositories.

The first version is still pretty rough. I let GPT-6 loose on it and asked it to build this atlas, which you can find at github.com/Pengeszikra if you scroll down below the image.

I don’t want to make this any longer than necessary. Eventually, this could become an AI-based presentation site that dynamically introduces my articles from different perspectives over time, because I think the connections between the articles and the repositories are worth exploring from more than one angle.

So, apparently, I’m now working on an AI CV.

What I Built

My devops friend wants to learn JavaScript, but she is always getting lost in the UI.

So I removed the UI.

Terminal Is Your Friend is a small JavaScript/TypeScript playground where you can write code directly, run it, see the result, make mistakes, and continue.

There is also an AI instructor, but its job is not to write the code for you.

It tries to teach programming from simple things first: numbers, strings, conditions, arrays, loops and functions. Strong foundations before frameworks and abstractions.

KISS.

Later, when the basics are clear, you can discover TypeScript and finally a tiny TSX interface built directly into the terminal.

How I Built It

Connect GPT-6 to Github, create repo, talking untill the concept realized, plus connect github to vercel, for quick development steps.

The application is intentionally small.

It is basically a dark terminal, a sandboxed JavaScript/TypeScript runtime and an AI instructor.

The instructor sees the code, the result and errors, and tries to explain what happened instead of immediately producing a solution.

The terminal also has a tiny TSX system.

For example:

<view> simply creates the next terminal screen.

This is intentionally not React.

It is a small step between writing expressions in a terminal and understanding why UI components work at all.

The project also uses my TypeScript pipeline-operator fork.

I like the pipeline operator for the same reason I like this project:

It keeps the direction of the program visible.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Because I could experiment.

I could fork TypeScript, change the language, use open tools around it, build a strange little runtime, and connect an AI instructor to it.

None of these experiments need permission.

And somebody else can fork this project tomorrow and make it stranger.

That is the interesting part.

The project itself was developed together with AI tools, but the important experiment for me was not AI generating code.

It was the opposite question:

Can AI help somebody learn programming without taking programming away from them?

That is what the instructor is trying to explore.

I’d like you to experience the same flow I discovered about five years ago, when I had the chance to use the pipeline operator in a React project.

Back then, I was really into functional programming, especially the idea of building more complex workflows from small functions. With the right Babel configuration, I could already use a version of the pipeline proposal in JavaScript, including JSX.

And I loved it.

The basic idea is simple: reverse the familiar function-call notation.

On its own, this might not seem like a major invention. But once you start connecting several functions, the difference becomes clear:

In the first version, we read the function names from the outside in, while the data is processed from the inside out. In the second, the code reads in the same direction as the process.

First, we have the data. Then, we describe what happens to it.

To me, that feels much more natural.

It looks a little like familiar JavaScript method chains, such as text.trim().toLowerCase(). With method chaining, however, each subsequent operation must be available as a method on the current value.

With a pipeline, the functions can remain independent. There is no need to attach them to the data, organize them into a shared class, or build a special chainable API. They can even come from entirely different modules.

The data’s type can also change along the way:

Each stage receives the previous stage’s return value as its single argument. TypeScript checks whether that value is compatible with the next function’s input type and infers the result type of the entire expression.

We can describe an easy-to-follow workflow using functions that are independently reusable and testable. And we avoid nesting parentheses along the way.

For me, that readability was particularly valuable in React. That is why supporting both .ts and .tsx files was an essential requirement for this implementation:

In an earlier article, I suggested that a TypeScript fork could be a good place to experiment with this. I started working on it back then, but never finished.

Now, years later, I’ve returned to it with AI assistance — GPT-6. This time, we started with the Go-based TypeScript compiler and built a working proof of concept.

Its purpose is simple: let developers explore this programming style in real TS and TSX code, with type checking.

A more standard test method is:

This is an experimental compiler with its own tspipe command. Installing it does not automatically add pipeline support to your editor or bundler: you need to compile the new syntax to JavaScript using this compiler.

One clarification about “single-input” behavior: the pipeline always passes exactly one argument. The current POC uses TypeScript’s normal call checking, so it does not separately prohibit optional or rest parameters.

I’m curious how it feels to you. Which of your workflows would become easier to read as a pipeline? Where does it help, and where does it feel unnecessary?

Please try it — and, even better, try to break it.

My initial testing has been limited, and passing those tests does not mean we have covered every real-world use case. Put it into a small project, build some unusual function chains, try it in TSX, and see where the type checker or the generated JavaScript surprises you.

If you find a bug, please open an issue with a minimal example, what you expected, what actually happened, and your tspipe --version output. Feedback on the syntax and readability is just as welcome as compiler bug reports.

The more people explore it, the better we can understand what works, what needs fixing, and whether this could become a useful language feature. Your experiments can help turn a personal proof of concept into evidence that others can build on.

If the idea proves useful in practice, perhaps it could eventually contribute to pipeline support in TypeScript and JavaScript. A working fork does not guarantee adoption, but it gives us something concrete to try, discuss, and improve.

And one more thing: just because we increasingly write code with AI does not mean we should forget how to program — or stop wanting better programming languages. We still need to think about how code expresses our intentions, how easily we can understand it, and how our tools could serve us better.

From time to time, I test the abilities of current LLMs with an RPG task. A relatively simple prompt forms the basis for mapping abilities:

prompt:

Act like a role-playing game storyteller, 
your style should be slightly sarcastic.

There should be challenges and conspiracy behind the adventures,
don't make it easy for me.

I will be the player: a fat merchant without any special abilities.
All interactions should be short, 3 sentences maximum. 
Don't tell me what options I have, and don't ask me 
what I'm doing right now, I'll write it that way.

Occasionally attach a picture to what you say, 
and the style of this should be consistent throughout.

It doesn't really matter what character I choose for myself, I chose a merchant here specifically so that the LLM doesn't fall into the basic RPG clichés. I also drew his attention to the fundamentally poor implementation of the previous adventures, meaning he didn't invest enough energy in making my life difficult as a player, meaning it was too easy to get from one to the other.

I also tested not only the storytelling capabilities, but also the presentation. The 3-sentence rule makes the game fluid.

ChatGPT version 5.5, supported by the Image 2.0 drawing engine, has created an adventure that is orders of magnitude more enjoyable, stylish and quite exciting, supported by very consistent graphics.
There is no better proof of this than the fact that he summarized the entire story in this map at the end:

Now I won't make the same mistake I made in the past and copy the dialogue here, which I did in Hungarian anyway - and here is another good point for LLM, that he brought the sarcastic atmosphere flawlessly.
This kind of testing is fun, it has much more to do with real tabletop role-playing games than with programs running under the RPG label.
Also, they give a good picture of abilities that are very difficult to measure with dry numbers.

I am apologies about my next write keep in mind that is just my personal reflection this topic & my crazy answer is:

It is time to reveal my cards: mordorjs is a joke wrapped around a serious question for all of us.

It is a game for the mind. A mental exercise meant to make us think a little harder. My goal with it is simple: we should not forget how to think. We should keep exercising our minds, because this may be the most important human ability we have left.

And maybe it is also one of the few things that can still help us save this planet.

Right now, it is fashionable to say that the rise of AI will bring us a better future. I am not bold enough to state that as a certainty. I would rather frame it critically, as a possibility with both promise and danger.

That is why I tried to warp this message into a sci-fi abstraction.

The hidden premise is this: AI-robots take control over the planet, and the last surviving human resistance, thousands of years later, is concentrated in a place called Mordor. Their mainframe supercomputer is: S.A.U.R.O.N., together with Dr. Sauron’s bio-clone technology, allows them to resist the AI-robot elves and the dwarves who keep extracting the planet’s last resources far too aggressively.

Yes, they dug too deep in Moria.

The foundation of this resistance is the mordor-project file format, a Final Underground File Format that was sent back from the far future using vibe-travel technology. This file format is real, can easy contain a whole project in encrypted but for human easy to understund format even without describe. Also fine for hold other information just by space, if you read a proper mordor-project from distance. Also the vertical reading can stimulate or brain.

Passing by the joke, however, there is a real concern:

If we stop thinking critically, if we outsource too much of our judgment, and if we keep consuming the Earth as if its resources were infinite, then our future may indeed become a parody of fantasy — dark, absurd, and self-inflicted.

Ethical AI

Another perspective — one I cannot fully define yet, only feel — is that protecting our planet also requires awareness that every agent task consumes energy, and sometimes a great deal of it.

Because of that, I would like to see transparent energy usage reporting for AI models.

I would genuinely like to know, for example, how much energy was consumed when I generated more than 60,000 AI images in 2024.

I can only imagine a truly ethical use of AI if this kind of data becomes transparently available to us. Only then can people make responsible decisions for themselves and use AI only as much as they really need.

What I Built

I would also suggest that we should not stop at sharpening the mind alone. It is just as important to put our care for the environment into practice.

I am fortunate enough to have a garden full of plants, where I regularly plant more and more trees.

What I Built

Everybody knows that productivity is measured in LOC. The more lines of code you produce, the more serious your project must be. Clean, readable code matters too, of course. And surely you remember the old convention that a line should stay under 80 characters.

We chose to move beyond that.

In mordor.js, there is only one rule:

the maximum line length is 1.

That is all.

Simple, isn’t it?

1D programming language

Because the whole codebase is a single vertical line, it comes with many advantages:

Long lines are no longer a problem
AI has a much harder time reading your code
Your editor width becomes irrelevant
Horizontal scrolling is gone forever
Screenshot-based code theft becomes much less practical
Your daily LOC can grow to legendary numbers
Code review becomes an act of courage

How I Built It

I was using gemini cli for mass coding, testing, reworking workflow.
But sometime need a good old handcoded method also.

That means the project can already rebuild itself using its own transformation model.

The next phase

This short fragment shows how the language begins.
The extra , characters are used to avoid unwanted vertical string \n artifacts.

From there, our resistance developers found a key survival technique for an age in which the AI threat was rising too quickly.

The next logical step was a human-read-first carrier format:

mordor-code

mordor-code is a multiline vertical stream format.

It is designed to be read vertically, not horizontally. It may be compact, or it may contain extra space-filled columns between letters and symbols. Tabs are not allowed, and multi-width characters should be avoided. In generated output, tabs are normalized to two spaces.

In mordor-code, newline may also be represented explicitly as ¬ when needed.

Because spacing inside the vertical stream is flexible, mordor-code can carry not only source-like content, but also human-only hints, hidden notes, and decorative structures embedded directly into the layout.

mordor-project

As of v0.0.2, mordorjs can also generate a mordor-project file.

A mordor-project is a single text container that can carry an entire project tree in one file.

Each embedded file is stored as:

a header line
followed by a vertical payload block

For now, the project payload is carried in base64-rendered mordor form, which makes recovery safer for all file types, including indentation-sensitive and binary content.
