In whatever time period you are outside of now, you enter a spiral of regret/longing or expectation/anxiety.

Past wishes, If they are like that in the future, I hope they will be...

A life lived through fatigue and what is no longer or what has not yet happened.

10 Need to Know Mac Terminal Commands

If you want to get into web development, knowing what the Terminal is and how to use it is very beneficial. But there are some essential commands that we'll go over, so we feel comfortable using it.

In today's article, we will be going over the 10 need to know Mac Terminal commands - #10 is a fun one! 🙂

What is the Terminal?

The Terminal. So what is it?

The most basic use of the Terminal is being able to navigate throughout your computer's folders and files.

There are commands that you can run inside the Terminal that can create a new ReactJS application, install a new npm package, and so on, but we are not going to discuss those in this article.

Let's focus on the basic commands when navigating your computer using the Terminal.

pwd

The command, pwd, stands for "Print Working Directory." Essentially, you type in that command, and it will spit out the exact file path for the file or folder you are in.

cd

This stands for "change directory" or, in simpler terms, change which folder we are in.

When using the command, cd, we can tell it which way to move by adding more to the command.

cd or cd ~ - Takes us to the home directory.
cd <folder name> - Takes us forward one step to the folder that is typed in.
cd .. - Moves us back one level to the parent folder.
cd ../.. - Moves us back two levels. Add more /.. for each level we want to navigate up.

ls

Now that we are in a folder, we might want to see what is in that folder. When running the command, ls, it will show us everything in that folder.

clear

This command does exactly what it sounds like; it "clears" your terminal out. Sometimes a clean slate is easier when trying to focus.

mkdir

If we were to right-click directly onto our Desktop view, that little menu would pop up, we could click on "New Folder", and then a brand new folder would pop up for us to name. This command does that same functionality.

mkdir stands for "Make Directory" or simply, make a new folder.

Wherever this command is ran from, it will create the new folder in that spot. So navigate to the desired location using cd commands, and then type in mkdir <folder name>.

To get into that new folder, we would run the command: cd <folder name>.

touch

Now that we know how to create a folder let's create some files within that folder. If we followed the commands above:

mkdir new-folder
cd new-folder

We should now be in the "new-folder" directory/folder. Let's create a file within that folder. By running the following command, that would create a file:

touch new-file - this has no extension, so we would want to add .html, .txt, or whichever extension needed.

open

Open a file or folder by typing in the command:

open <folder/file name>

history

Want to know all the commands that have been ran in the current terminal session? Run the command, history to see them.

Another trick! Use the "up" and "down" arrows to navigate through previous commands.

cat

This command allows us to see the contents of a particular file. We would need to declare the particular file for this command to work.

If we know the path of to the file, we could run:

cat /Desktop/new-folder/new-file

Or we could navigate from our home folder to new-folder and then run the command.

cd Desktop
cd new-folder
cat new-file

say

This one is a fun one. Not necessary for navigation, but it makes your computer SPEAK to you!

Type in: say "anything here" and your computer will say that. Don't forget the quotes in this command!

I would like to share a free education below that will change your life. The topic I want to talk about today is perhaps the most valuable thing I have written so far. Learning to learn is perhaps the secret to success, especially if we are talking about software development.

The sharp edge principle answers questions such as how we can reach our goals, where we go wrong, what principles we need to have to be successful. I'm sure it will have a life-changing effect when applied, the point is to apply it.

1) Repetitive Operation

According to U.S News & World Report, 80% of resolutions for the new year-end in failure by the second week of February. When we fail, we may feel like we're not pushing enough or just lacking passion. The truth is a success; It is formed by the continuous repetition of simple and efficient actions over time. This is known as the sharp edge.

The key message to reach the sharp edge is to develop our philosophy of life and master monotonous/routine tasks. When we think of successful people, we may believe that they have special talents that we do not have, that they are amazing, but that is often not the point.

Thomas J. Watson, the founder of IBM, explained the formula for success as;

"Double your failures".

Most of us do not see failure as an option. But what we don't understand is that the more we fail, the better our chances of succeeding.

Today, Abraham Lincoln is remembered as one of America's greatest presidents, but his career has been filled with unsuccessful election results.

Only 5% of people achieve a significant portion of their life goals. So if being successful is all about doing simple things consistently, what's keeping the other 95% of people from following?

Simply put, the 5% understand the power of the sharp edge and it works in their life. The other 95% do not. Monotonous things are very easy to do but not as easy as not doing them.

2) Lifelong Learning

Making good choices will lead you to success, but it may not keep you there. Protecting it is all about using it to your advantage for every sharp edge in your lifetime.

Reading a 10-page educational and inspiring book every day can wonderfully enrich your life. It allows you to read 300 pages of books every month. You can watch life-changing 15 minutes of videos every day. Or you can take a course or seminar every few months.

When you learn something new, you need to add it to your practice. Confucius;

“Knowledge without action is useless, action without knowledge is dangerous.”

To do these, you must know the conscious and unconscious mental functioning. The conscious mind is very powerful but can focus on one thing at a time and is easily distracted. On the other hand, almost all our mental activities are unconscious. We do 99% of what we do on autopilot.

For example, have you ever driven or walked on a familiar road when your mind was fully occupied? We all do this.

There is a need to train the conscious mind to make good choices. You use your conscious brain to determine a routine you want to adopt. You have to do it over and over until it gets into your subconscious and becomes automatic.

3) Make Dreams Come True

We all have dreams, unfortunately very few of them come true because we don't know how to follow them. But there is a tried and tested formula that works, and it's pretty easy. The first step of the formula is to make your dreams come true. To do this effectively, we need to use our senses. That is, putting our dreams into words or creating a Dream Board out of pictures. Even better, we can talk to someone else about them.

There are three steps to making our dreams come true, write them down, review them daily, and develop a plan. If your dream is to be financially free, try to identify the amount of savings you will need to achieve that freedom. Or if you want to be healthy, describe the activities you should participate in and how you will feel.

Making our goals specific and vivid will bring them one step closer to living. According to Napoleon Hill;

"A goal is a dream that has time".

So include the dates when writing your dreams. This is important because 80% of everything we do tends to be done in the last 20% of our current time.

Our dreams may never come true if we don't set a deadline. Writing down your dream means you can read it every day, reminding yourself what your goal is. You focus more on what you want to achieve, rather than straying off course.

The more we assimilate our vision, the more they become embedded in our subconscious mind. Later on, we become more prone to seizing opportunities that help us achieve our dreams. It also becomes easier to reject distractions that can divert us from the path to success. This then paves the way for developing a plan. It's just the steps that get us started. Remember the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"Do the work and you will have the power"

Maybe this is the first time you've heard the phrase;

"Perfect is the enemy of the good."

This is an aphorism which in the English-speaking world is commonly attributed to Voltaire, who quoted an Italian proverb in his Dictionnaire philosophique in 1770: "Le meglio è l'inimico del bene"

So do we really understand what is about? Sometimes our dreams, targets or goals may exceed our abilities, knowledge or experience. In such cases, it is very normal to be pessimistic right away. Because incomplete information will make you feel helpless and the result will often be to give up or walk away.

It can actually be hard to see when there are dozens of options at this point. Because you can be sure, I know how it feels to work on software. Systematically, almost every day, that what you learn is insufficient to create what you want, that you have trouble remembering what you learned yesterday, and that you are discouraged to go further. First of all, calm down, there are a few very important items you need to remember, make sure you understand them thoroughly.

1. Do not hurry.
2. Make sure you apply what you learn.

This will give you confidence and over time you will see your stress decrease. The key word here is of course time. Do not run, there is no danger that requires you to run.

Make sure you apply what you learn.
