      <title>How to Add Private CI Reports to Playwright Email Tests</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;An OTP test can pass for the wrong reason.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If several test runs share one inbox, a broad query such as "find the latest&lt;br&gt;
verification email" can match a message created by another worker. The test is&lt;br&gt;
green, but it has not proved that the application sent an email for the user it&lt;br&gt;
just created.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Giving each run a unique recipient fixes the matching problem. There is still&lt;br&gt;
one awkward question when the test runs in CI: how do you leave evidence of&lt;br&gt;
what matched without printing an email address, subject, or body into a public&lt;br&gt;
build log?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This article shows the approach I use with Playwright, GitHub Actions, and&lt;br&gt;
&lt;a href="https://www.npmjs.com/package/@pntr/testkit" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;&lt;code&gt;@pntr/testkit&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

  The workflow
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Each test run:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Generates its own catch-all address.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Submits that address through the real signup UI.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Waits for the exact recipient, subject, and start time.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Extracts the OTP from the matched message.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Adds a content-free report link to the GitHub Actions Step Summary.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This is a complete TypeScript example. The selectors are deliberately explicit&lt;br&gt;

  2. The wait is narrow
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The query combines the exact recipient with a subject fragment and a&lt;br&gt;
&lt;code&gt;startedAt&lt;/code&gt; boundary. An old message for the same address cannot satisfy the&lt;br&gt;
test.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The wait happens server-side. The Playwright worker does not need to download&lt;br&gt;
and scan an entire inbox every second.&lt;/p&gt;

  3. The report is created only after a match
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;code&gt;waitForEmailWithReport()&lt;/code&gt; returns the normal email result plus a &lt;code&gt;report&lt;/code&gt;&lt;br&gt;
object. If no message matches before the timeout, the wait fails and no report&lt;br&gt;
is created.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That distinction matters. The report confirms a successful match. It is useful&lt;br&gt;
when a later assertion fails or when you want an audit trail for a green run,&lt;br&gt;
but it is not a postmortem for an email that never arrived.&lt;/p&gt;

  What the private report does not store
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The durable report does not copy:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Opening the report URL requires the PNTR account that owns the hostname. The&lt;br&gt;
report follows the account's current retention tier: 48 hours on Free and 90&lt;br&gt;
days on Premium.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The matched email still exists in the test inbox according to the inbox's own&lt;br&gt;
retention rules. The report is a separate, deliberately smaller record.&lt;/p&gt;

  Why not print the email into the job log?
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;CI logs tend to live longer and reach more people than expected. They may be&lt;br&gt;
copied into bug reports, retained as artifacts, or exposed to contributors who&lt;br&gt;
can read job output but should not read test messages.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For a synthetic OTP workflow, the minimum useful evidence is usually:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Playwright's built-in &lt;code&gt;request&lt;/code&gt; fixture is an &lt;code&gt;APIRequestContext&lt;/code&gt;, so the browser flow and inbox lookup can stay in one test without opening a second web UI.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This example:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;creates a unique recipient for each parallel worker;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;records a lower time boundary before submitting the form;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;matches the exact recipient;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;fetches the full message only after finding its summary;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;extracts the OTP from a label specific to the application's template.

&lt;li&gt;your application validates &lt;code&gt;Stripe-Signature&lt;/code&gt;;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;your database update is correct;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;a queue accepted the job;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;retries and duplicate events are handled safely.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;PNTR returns its own &lt;code&gt;200&lt;/code&gt; acknowledgement after storing the request. In other words, a green delivery in Stripe means &lt;strong&gt;Stripe reached the inspector&lt;/strong&gt;. It does not mean your future application code processed the event.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That distinction is the point of this setup: isolate transport and configuration first, then test application behavior separately.&lt;/p&gt;

  1. Create a dedicated capture hostname
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In PNTR, create a subdomain and enable &lt;strong&gt;Request Capture&lt;/strong&gt;. Use a provider-specific path so the log remains readable:&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;On the free plan, captured requests expire after 48 hours. Disabling capture clears the stored request log.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Before involving Stripe, I send one disposable smoke test:&lt;br&gt;

  2. Register the destination in a Stripe sandbox

&lt;p&gt;In Stripe Workbench:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Open &lt;strong&gt;Webhooks&lt;/strong&gt; and create an event destination.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Choose the relevant account scope and API version.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Subscribe only to the event types your application will consume.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Select &lt;strong&gt;Webhook&lt;/strong&gt; as the destination type.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Paste the PNTR URL and create the destination.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Starting with one event type keeps the first trace easy to read. For a payment flow, that might be:&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Only the request that inserted a new row should schedule the work. In a production system, make the database write and job handoff atomic—for example with a transactional outbox—so a process crash cannot leave an event marked as handled before its work is queued.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The real handler should:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt;read the unmodified request body;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;verify &lt;code&gt;Stripe-Signature&lt;/code&gt; using the endpoint secret;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;reject invalid signatures;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;deduplicate work using the event ID;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;enqueue slow work and return a &lt;code&gt;2xx&lt;/code&gt; quickly;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;tolerate retries and out-of-order delivery where the business flow requires it.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Do not copy JSON out of an inspector and treat successful parsing as signature verification. Stripe's verification uses the &lt;strong&gt;raw request body&lt;/strong&gt;, the signature header, and the endpoint secret. Parsing and serializing JSON can change the signed bytes.&lt;/p&gt;

  Where this approach stops
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A capture endpoint is useful for inspecting shape and delivery. It is not a staging backend, a signature-verification proxy, or a production webhook receiver. Providers that require a specific response body are also a poor fit for a fixed acknowledgement endpoint.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For Stripe, use it to shorten the discovery loop. Then test the actual handler with signed fixtures and an end-to-end sandbox flow.&lt;/p&gt;
