A common shortcut for estimating portable power station runtime is dividing nominal battery capacity (
Wh
) by appliance wattage (
W
). For example, pairing a
1,152 Wh
station with a
40 W
load gives a naive estimate of
28.8 hours
.

In practice, three physical factors reduce delivered runtime—especially on low-wattage AC loads:

Depth of Discharge (DoD) reserve: Battery management systems (BMS) reserve a fraction of nominal cell capacity (typically
10%
on LiFePO4 packs) to protect cell longevity.

Stage conversion efficiency (
η
): Converting battery DC voltage to
120V
/
230V
pure sine wave AC incurs inverter conversion loss, whereas regulated
12V DC
and
USB-C PD
paths bypass the AC inverter.

Continuous inverter self-consumption (standby drain): While the AC output switch is enabled, the inverter draws baseline power (
10 W
to
15 W
on mid-size stations) regardless of how small the connected load is.

  1. Documented Manufacturer Formula vs. Naive Division

In the official BLUETTI AC180 US User Manual (Section 4.4 Discharging, p. 17), the manufacturer states the explicit operating time formula for a
40 W
refrigerator on AC:

Nominal capacity:
1,152 Wh

Depth of Discharge (DoD):
90%

Inverter conversion efficiency (
η
):
> 85%

Self-consumption:
~15 W

Operation time = (1152 Wh × 90% × 85%) ÷ (40 W + 15 W)
               = 881.28 Wh ÷ 55 W
≈ 16.02 hours (rounded to ≈ 17 hours in manual text)

Because the
15 W
inverter overhead runs continuously alongside the
40 W
appliance draw, continuous operation drops from the naive
28.8 hours
to roughly
16–17 hours
.

  2. Port-Aware Modeling in Power Finder (
v1.5.0
)

When building the calculation engine for Power Finder (
v1.5.0
), we separated conversion losses by output path and load profile rather than applying a single flat multiplier:

Parameter

Value in Engine
v1.5.0

Scope / Notes

DEFAULT_EFFICIENCY_AC

0.85
(
85%
)

Applied to
ac
ports and unconfirmed port types (fail-closed conservative default).

DEFAULT_EFFICIENCY_DC

0.92
(
92%
)

Applied to
dc
(
12V
) and
usb
(
USB-A
/
USB-C PD
) outputs.

STANDBY_DRAIN_WATTS

10 W

Baseline continuous overhead accounted for across the active window.

CHARGE_TRANSFER_EFFICIENCY

0.85
(
85%
)

Share of energy transferred into a secondary battery (laptops, phones, camera packs).

  Three Load Profile Archetypes

Appliances do not draw power identically over a 24-hour window. The engine models three distinct profiles:

export const USAGE_PROFILES = ['continuous', 'cyclic', 'intermittent'] as const;

continuous
— Constant draw over the selected duration (e.g., Wi-Fi router, CPAP with humidifier off, LED camp lighting).

cyclic
— Compressor-driven or thermostat-cycled appliances (e.g.,
12V
portable fridge or full-size refrigerator), where energy scales by
dutyCycle
while peak and startup surge (
surgeMultiplier
) remain unreduced.

intermittent
— Short high-wattage runs specified in
minutesPerDay
(e.g., microwave, electric kettle, coffee maker), where total watt-hours are modest but continuous AC inverter rating (
W
) and surge capacity (
Peak W
) govern compatibility.

  3. Surge Compatibility vs. Resistive "Power Lifting"

Several stations advertise a resistive load boost mode—such as Power Lifting (
2,700 W
on the
1,800 W
BLUETTI AC180 and Elite 100 V2, or
3,900 W
on the
2,600 W
Elite 200 V2).

Official manuals explicitly note that this mode is restricted to pure resistive loads (heaters, basic heating elements) by lowering output voltage while keeping actual output power at the rated ceiling. Inductive loads with motors or compressors can draw
2×
to
4×
their running wattage at startup and cannot rely on resistive voltage-drop modes.

  4. Try the Interactive Model & Data Notes

Build a custom load profile in Power Finder

Inspect side-by-side manual specs: BLUETTI AC180 vs. BLUETTI Elite 100 V2

Full calculation rules: Methodology

Public specification & math repository: github.com/powerstationlabs/data-notes
