This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

FrostSow is an intelligent, microclimate-calibrated planting companion designed to eliminate the guesswork of gardening. Instead of deciphering complex frost

A garden planner that tells you what to plant this week based on your local frost dates

  How I Built It

What I Built
FrostSow is an intelligent microclimate garden planner designed to get growers away from screens and out into the soil with confidence.
What it does: Calculates localized first/last frost dates, checks companion plant compatibility in a visual bed planner, predicts upcoming freeze risks, and automates weather-synced watering schedules and harvest yield tracking.
Hands-free in the field: Features a real-time, low-latency live voice assistant so gardeners can ask questions and log notes with dirt on their hands without touching their phone or computer.
Who it's for: Backyard gardeners, urban growers, and homesteaders who want optimal planting times without endless spreadsheet planning.

How I Built It
AI Architecture: Built around the Gemini Live API via @google/genai for real-time bidirectional audio streaming (16kHz PCM), paired with Gemini Flash for structured microclimate recommendations and companion-planting analysis.
Real-Time Stack: A Node.js and Express backend with a dedicated WebSocket server bridging streaming voice interactions directly between the browser's Web Audio API and the Live API.
Frontend & Data: Built with React, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind CSS, and Recharts, integrated with the Open-Meteo API for hyper-local 7-day weather forecasts, precipitation tracking, and frost-warning triggers.

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation is fundamental to FrostSow because agriculture and food sovereignty thrive on shared, accessible knowledge—not walled gardens or proprietary paywalls:
Unrestricted Integration with Open Climate & Scientific Data
Closed platforms lock botanical charts and weather models behind expensive subscriptions. By leveraging open meteorological datasets (Open-Meteo, NOAA climate normals) alongside open development frameworks, FrostSow delivers hyper-local frost alerts and soil moisture intelligence to community growers and homesteaders at zero cost.
Low-Latency, Protocol-Level Audio Control
Closed voice assistants force users into siloed, pre-packaged apps that cannot be deeply embedded into custom workflows. Open streaming standards (bidirectional WebSockets, raw 16kHz PCM audio buffers, and flexible SDKs) made it possible to build a native, hands-free field assistant directly into the browser—working seamlessly on mobile devices while hands are covered in dirt.
Adaptability for Hyper-Local Microclimates
Standard closed gardening apps enforce rigid, national calendar assumptions that often fail in urban heat islands, high-altitude plots, or unique microclimates. Open innovation ensures that companion planting rules, localized hardiness models, and harvest logs remain transparent, extensible, and completely owned by the grower.
