I Built a Live Stream Discovery Feature for PromoHub

I've been experimenting with a new feature for PromoHub: live stream discovery.

PromoHub started around discovering and promoting communities, but I've been exploring ways to make the platform useful for discovering other types of content as well.

That led me to build /live.

What `/live` Does

The idea is simple: give people a place to discover streams that are currently live without having to search through multiple platforms separately.

The first version supports streams from Twitch and Kick.

It currently includes:

Live stream discovery
Viewer counts
Categories
Search
Filters
Sorting by viewers
Automatic live stream updates

Why I'm Testing It

I don't want to assume that every feature I build is automatically useful.

That's why /live is currently a limited 1-week test.

During the test, I want to learn:

Do people actually use it?
Do they browse multiple streams?
Are the filters useful?
Is sorting by viewers useful?
What information is missing?
Would people come back and use it again?

The answers will help me decide whether /live should become a permanent part of PromoHub.

When building a web application, it's easy to focus on the big things.

New features.

New pages.

New systems.

But while developing PromoHub, I've been learning that some of the most valuable improvements can be much smaller.

Improving What Already Exists

PromoHub is a discovery platform for communities, creators, websites, projects, businesses and more.

There are always new features I could build, but I've started putting more attention into improving the things users already interact with.

That means looking at:

Navigation
Page performance
Mobile responsiveness
Content discovery
Profiles
Search
SEO
UI/UX

A small improvement in one of these areas can affect the experience of the entire platform.

Why This Matters

When you're developing alone, it's tempting to measure progress by how many features you've shipped.

But a growing codebase isn't automatically a better product.

I'd rather have fewer features that work well than dozens of features that make the platform complicated.

That's something I'm keeping in mind as PromoHub continues to grow.

What's Next

I'm still working on new functionality, but I'm also spending more time improving the foundation of the platform.

The goal is simple:

Make PromoHub easier to understand, easier to navigate and more useful for the people who use it.

When you're building a product as a solo developer, it's easy to always think about the next feature.

I used to think that adding more functionality was the main way to make PromoHub better.

But as the platform has grown, I've started looking at development differently.

More Features Don't Always Mean a Better Product

PromoHub is a discovery platform for communities, creators, websites, projects, businesses and more.

There are always new things I could build.

But adding another feature doesn't necessarily solve the problems users are actually experiencing.

Sometimes the better improvement is much smaller:

Making a page load faster
Improving navigation
Making content easier to discover
Fixing a confusing UI element
Improving mobile responsiveness
Making an existing feature easier to understand

These changes aren't always as exciting as launching something new, but they can have a bigger impact on the actual experience.

Watching How People Use the Platform

I've also started paying more attention to real user behavior.

Instead of only asking:

"What should I build next?"

I'm asking:

"What are users already trying to do?"

Looking at page visits, navigation, registrations, posts and other activity can reveal where the product needs improvement.

That information is much more useful than simply building features because they sound interesting.

What I'm Taking Away

I'm still going to build new features for PromoHub.

But now I'm trying to balance new functionality with improving what already exists.

A good product isn't necessarily the one with the most features.

It's the one where the existing features are useful, understandable and easy to use.

That's something I'm continuing to learn while building PromoHub.
