I recently cleared my 12th boards with a 92.8% and scored a 99.983%ile in JEE Mathematics.

When people hear that Math score, they assume I had this perfect, balanced, highly disciplined study routine. The truth? That score happened because I was borderline addicted to Math, and it almost completely ruined my Physics and Chemistry preparation.

Here is the trap no one warns you about, and how you can avoid making the same mistake I did.

 The "Math Addiction" Trap

When you start getting good at a subject, it stops feeling like studying and starts feeling like a game. Solving complex calculus problems gave me a dopamine hit. I would sit down to study, open my Math book, and suddenly four hours would vanish.

I convinced myself I was being "productive" because I was studying hard. But in reality, I was using Math to procrastinate. I was running away from Physics and Chemistry because they were harder for me and didn't give me that instant gratification.

Because I spent all day on Math, my other subjects suffered. I realized too late that scoring 100% in one subject while bombing the other two is a terrible strategy for competitive exams.

If you find yourself obsessing over your favorite subject while neglecting the others, here is how to fix it:

 1. "Eat the Frog" First Thing

Mark Twain famously said that if you have to eat a live frog, do it first thing in the morning. For me, Chemistry was the frog.

The Fix: Never start your study session with your favorite subject. If you love Math, use it as a reward. Force yourself to complete a 90-minute block of your weakest subject before you are allowed to touch the subject you actually enjoy.

 2. Stop Chasing the Final 5%

When you are already great at a subject, getting from 95% to 100% takes a massive amount of time and effort.

The Fix: Realize that the 4 hours you spend trying to perfect that final 5% in Math would yield a much higher return on investment if you spent them learning the basic, high-weightage chapters in Physics. Don't let perfectionism in one area destroy your overall average.

 3. Use Strict "Cut-Off" Alarms

When I was in the zone with Math, I didn't want to stop.

The Fix: You need forced transitions. I started setting hard alarms on my phone. When the 90-minute Math alarm went off, I had to close the book immediately—even if I was in the middle of a problem. It feels unnatural at first, but it forces you to respect the time you allocated for your other subjects.

 Final Thoughts

Being passionate about a specific subject like Math or Computer Science is a huge advantage, but during board exams and JEE, balance beats singular brilliance.

Have you ever caught yourself "productive procrastinating" by only studying your favorite subject? Which subject is your "frog"? Let's talk about it in the comments!
