My experience of learning to code on an iPad

I got into this a while ago when I saw someone I respect running a Python course, so I decided to learn it. But I didn’t have a laptop, and when I checked out the course on YouTube, it turned out to be a web-based application that anyone could use. As soon as I realised I could do it on my iPad, I started learning — and it was brilliant and easy, especially as I was learning English at the same time.

But there’s one thing I’ve realised, and that is that programming on an iPad is easy — it’s straightforward, especially the iPad keyboard, which is so user-friendly that anyone can get to grips with it. I mean, if powerful software capable of handling large projects were developed, programming would become much easier for developers
. You don’t need a training course on how to use an iPad — like those ‘how to use a computer’ courses; anyone can use it, even children.

If you teach a child to code, all they need to do is learn how to use a computer — they don’t need to learn how to use an iPad.

Programming, at its core, is a computer language — and I know that — but I believe that if we don’t have the resources, we shouldn’t use that as an excuse. We can start with an iPad or a smartphone — online code editors work well, especially with an easy language like Python

At the moment, I’m learning to code and putting what I’ve learnt into practice. I’ve joined a community of programmers and learnt a great deal. There’s just one step left: as soon as I have the money, I’ll buy a laptop.
If I’d let not having a laptop be an excuse, I wouldn’t have learnt anything by now, and I’d still be waiting for who knows how long until I could save up and buy one — and once I’d bought it, I’d be right back at square one, so the journey would have taken much longer.

Finally, a piece of advice that some might find clichéd — just get started, whatever your circumstances. Honestly, guys, I’m grateful that I got started and didn’t wait, leaving room for excuses. As for me, getting started despite everything was a greater achievement than anything I’ve ever learnt.
