Think About Your Audience - The ChRIS Project.

ChRIS is a web-based platform designed to make it easy for people to run any kind of medical image processing. ChRIS is comprised of multiple opens source projects (openstack and openshift) - containerized microservices that communicate with each other through restAPIs.

ChRIS aims to solve the problem of reinventing the wheel, in that people are always writing the same backend over and over again. This happens because there's no reward in research to write a good system. Medical image processing research happens in relative isolation, the focus is on the output - Everyone invents their own platform. ChRIS aims to remove this barrier by letting researchers to focus not on building the infrastructure by having the infrastructure a solved problem for researchers.

ChRIS aims to process medical data very fast, get it out of the hospital on to the cloud do some very fast computing and get it back to the hospital, putting it right in front of someone who needs that information in a matter of seconds or minutes instead of the conventional days/hours had the person been reinventing the wheel.

A point of note is that the ChRIS project runs on MOC - Massachusetts Open Cloud. This helps us to run research and innovation over a production-scale public cloud.

As stated earlier, ChRIS makes computing very fast, efficient and easy. In the world of image processing that consumes high compute power and takes time, it'll benefit people (medical researchers and innovators) to use ChRIS to build these Image processes in matter of seconds, making their research clinically relevant.

I am really excited to be working on ChRIS because I am doing meaningful work that helps people. I work on Consolidating and making reusable various react ui components from two user interfaces - the ChRIS UI and store. In essence I am merging the ChRIS store into the ChRIS UI by deciding which UI to retain and also adding new features.

When I first started, understanding the code base was a bit difficult but after spending some time on it, it became clear how the code was structured making it easier to build on the code base.

It's been an interesting ride working on the ChRIS project.

Everyone Struggles - WSL

I have always known Linux distros like Ubuntu to be opensource and that it is more efficient and reliable for software development.

Since Windows is widespread, software developers employ virtual machines like Oracle virtual box to run other operating system on Windows.

This has been my default way of doing things. Running a VM on Windows always consumed lots of CPU power and RAM because I was running the full Ubuntu distro.

This practice continued until I Joined the Outreachy space. I began researching better and faster ways of doing things and this led to my discovery of WSL - Windows Subsystem for Linux.

I was skeptical at first because I was going to lose some GUI functionality that the full Ubuntu distro offered. I was also unsure of the performance and as such I reached out to my colleagues who provided better insight that led to my decision in using WSL.

Prior to using WSL, my local machine would freeze after sometime of running Ubuntu in the VM but now it doesn't do that anymore. My projects are CPU intensive but I am able to cope by minimizing the RAM and CPU usage by running WSL

It was a struggle but I rose above it because I was able to ask for help.

Introduce Yourself

 Meet David.

I am Obodo, David Sopuruchukwu, an Outreachy intern on the project

Consolidating and making reusable various react UI components from two user interfaces.

I graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2019 with a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. After that, I was opportune to work with Starnet Innovations, a technology company specializing in software and web development.

My time at Starnet Innovations provided me with enthusiasm and
fueled my drive for software development. I learnt about opensource and proprietary projects, their benefits and cons.

 My Core Values

“Creativity doesn’t wait for that perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones.” —Bruce Garrabrandt

Bruce's quote closely resonates with my being, I believe that people are born with creativity and not developing it is a disservice to humanity.

The first step is thinking out the solution (creativity), the next step is enduring the hardships that comes with bringing the creative solution to reality, this is the next best thing I possess, Determination. I always believe that it is not enough to possess an Idea, because an Idea that remains in the Idea stage is as good as not having an Idea.

I believe that there are times when we enlist the help of other people to drive our plans for the future. It is paramount that in thinking about the future, I develop the necessary skillset required to lead the people whose help I enlist. I believe that leaders are born out of circumstances but a true leader is one who in the face of adversity, maintains his/her vision and action plan for the future. Leadership is key to success

 My Motivation for Outreachy.

Outreachy provides me with the opportunity to learn from very talented mentors. Outreachy projects are opensource and therefore, offers me the flexibility to contribute to projects that impact people's life. Before applying to Outreachy, there are many bias I faced in the world of tech but outreachy encourages persons faced with bias to apply for its internship.

My biggest motivation, was a friend of mine, a previous Outreachy recipient whom I met in a shared program. He told me about Outreachy and encouraged me to apply. In his words,
Outreachy could redefine how I think of software engineering
, and I must confess, It has.
