Why Most Developers Have an Empty GitHub Profile (And Why I'm Trying to Fix It)

One piece of advice almost every developer hears is:

"Keep your GitHub active."

It makes sense. A GitHub profile can showcase your skills, document your learning journey, and even help during job searches.

But here's the reality.

Most developers don't have inactive GitHub profiles because they lack motivation—they're simply busy.

Between full-time work, university, freelance projects, and life in general, it's difficult to consistently think of project ideas, learn new technologies, and keep building side projects.

 The problem I kept seeing

Developers often know what they want to achieve:

Learn AI

Become a Backend Engineer

Master React

Prepare for technical interviews

Explore DevOps

What they don't have is a clear path from that goal to a portfolio of real projects.

 So I started building GitGrow

The idea behind GitGrow is straightforward.

Instead of asking developers to figure out what to build next, GitGrow helps generate a structured learning journey.

The workflow looks like this:

Choose a career or learning goal.

Generate a personalized roadmap.

Break that roadmap into practical coding tasks.

Build projects that become part of your GitHub portfolio over time.

The intention is not to create fake GitHub activity or meaningless commits.

The goal is to help developers create real repositories, explore new technologies, and learn through hands-on projects.

 Why I'm building it

I'm still validating whether this is a problem worth solving.

Before spending months developing new features, I want to understand whether developers actually find this valuable.

Some questions I'm trying to answer are:

Would you use a tool like this?

What would make it genuinely useful?

What concerns would you have?

What features would you expect before trusting it?

 I'd love your feedback

If this sounds interesting, you can check out the MVP here:

https://gitgrow.dev/

I'm not looking for customers at this stage.

I'm looking for honest feedback from developers to help shape the product into something genuinely useful.

If you have thoughts, concerns, or ideas, I'd love to hear them in the comments.

Thanks for reading!
