      <title>App Store Keyword Ranking Statistics: Why Rankings Decide Your Downloads (2026)</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;Every ASO guide tells you keyword rankings matter. Almost none of them show the numbers, so the advice reads like folklore. This post is the evidence layer: the published research on how much App Store search drives downloads, how steeply taps fall off by position, and what that means for where you spend your optimization time. Every stat links to its source so you can check it yourself.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Search is where App Store downloads come from&lt;br&gt;
The strongest numbers here come from Apple itself, published on the Apple Ads page for the App Store:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;70% of App Store visitors use search to discover apps.&lt;br&gt;
Almost 65% of downloads happen directly after a search.&lt;br&gt;
Ads shown at the top of search results convert at over 60% on average, which tells you how high-intent that surface is even before organic rankings enter the picture.&lt;br&gt;
Independent measurement backs this up. Sensor Tower's download-source analysis put search at nearly 60% of global App Store downloads, and their earlier study found the share is even higher for non-game apps (69%) than for games (56%) (Sensor Tower, 2018).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Browse features, charts, and editorial placements get the attention in marketing conversations. The download volume is in the search box.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The tap-through cliff: position 1 versus everyone else&lt;br&gt;
Knowing search drives downloads is only half the argument. The other half is how brutally those taps concentrate at the top. SplitMetrics measured average tap-through rate (TTR) by organic search position and found a cliff, not a slope:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Read that table again. Position 1 gets about 4.6x the taps of position 2 and over 10x position 3. Sum positions 2 through 9 and you get roughly 15%, which means the single top result out-collects the next eight combined by about 2 to 1.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Two practical consequences fall out of this:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Ranking #50 on a big keyword is worth nothing. Not "a little", nothing. The taps ran out forty positions earlier. A #3 rank on a specific long-tail phrase beats a #50 rank on a head term every time, which is exactly why our keyword research walkthrough tells you to sort by opportunity instead of raw demand.&lt;br&gt;
Small rank movements near the top are worth more than big movements further down. Going from #8 to #4 roughly doubles your tap share. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Going from #80 to #40 changes nothing. This is why the keywords you already rank #11-30 on are the cheapest wins in ASO: you're within pushing distance of the part of the curve where taps actually exist.&lt;br&gt;
Rankings are a moving target, which is why tracking exists&lt;br&gt;
A rank is not a fact you establish once. Competitors ship metadata updates, Apple re-weights terms, and seasonal search behavior shifts demand. The apps that win search treat rankings as a weekly metric, not a launch-week checkbox: measure, change one variable, wait for re-indexing, measure again. &lt;p&gt;After the tap: the ranking gets you seen, the listing gets you installed&lt;br&gt;
One honest caveat, because this data gets misused. Tap-through is not install. A top-3 rank puts your icon, title, and screenshots in front of the searcher; whether they tap and then install depends on how that listing looks against the two apps beside it.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That conversion layer is measurable too. Our State of App Store Screenshots 2026 report analyzed 1,499 top free iPhone apps and found the listings winning these high-value positions treat screenshots as conversion assets: portrait-first galleries, captioned frames, and regular iteration rather than launch-and-forget. Ranking work and listing work compound; either one alone leaves downloads on the table. When the ranking side is in motion, the screenshot side is the next lever.&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>I localized my app store screenshots into 8 languages. Here's what actually moved installs</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;I shipped my app in English, watched it do fine in the US and UK, and assumed the rest of the world would catch up once word got around.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It didn't. The install rate in non-English markets was roughly a third of what I saw in English ones, even where I had decent traffic. So I dug into&lt;br&gt;
  it, and the answer was embarrassingly simple: people couldn't read my store listing.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Not the description. They can machine-translate that in their head, or the store does it for them. The problem was the screenshots.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Store screenshots are the part nobody localizes&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Here's the thing about app store screenshots. They're not really screenshots. They're marketing posters with a phone in the middle and a headline on&lt;br&gt;
  top. "Track every workout in one tap." "Your money, finally organized." That headline is doing most of the selling.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;When someone in Tokyo or São Paulo lands on your listing, those headlines are still in English. The store will translate your text description, but &lt;br&gt;
  it will never touch the words baked into your screenshot images. So your strongest sales pitch shows up in a language a big chunk of your visitors &lt;br&gt;
  don't read.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I checked the top apps in a few categories across regions and the good ones all do this. Their screenshots are fully localized, headline and all. &lt;br&gt;
  The ones that don't bother are mostly small indie apps. I was in the second group.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Machine translation gets you 80% there, and that's the problem&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;My first attempt was the obvious one. Run my English headlines through a translation API, drop the output back into my design template, export.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It looked fine to me. It was not fine to native speakers.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A few issues I hit:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Length blows up your layout.&lt;/strong&gt; German headlines ran 40% longer than English and overflowed the safe area. A line that fit perfectly in English 
wrapped into three lines and collided with the phone frame.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Tone goes flat.&lt;/strong&gt; "Crush your goals" translated literally into something closer to "destroy your objectives" in two languages. Technically 
correct, reads like a robot wrote it.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Marketing copy isn't literal copy.&lt;/strong&gt; A good headline in French is not the word-for-word translation of a good headline in English. It's a 
different sentence that lands the same way.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So a pure translate-and-paste pipeline produced screenshots that were worse than leaving them in English, because now they looked low effort instead&lt;br&gt;
  of just foreign.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What actually worked&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The version that moved my numbers treated each language as its own piece of copywriting, not a string swap:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Write the headline natively per locale&lt;/strong&gt;, not translated. Short, punchy, sized to fit the layout. If it doesn't fit, rewrite it shorter rather 
than shrinking the font.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Re-check the layout per language.&lt;/strong&gt; Longer languages need a different break point or a tighter headline. You can't reuse one template blindly.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Keep the visual system identical&lt;/strong&gt; across locales. Same colors, same device frame, same composition. Only the words change. This is what makes 
a set look intentional instead of random.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Doing this by hand in Figma for one language is a half day. For eight, it's a week I didn't have.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The shortcut I ended up building around&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I do this with &lt;a href="https://snapmonk.com" rel="noopener noreferrer"&gt;SnapMonk&lt;/a&gt; now because the localization step is built into the generation. I upload my raw screenshots, pick &lt;br&gt;
  the output language, and it writes the on-image copy natively in that language instead of translating mine, then lays it out so the longer strings &lt;br&gt;
  still fit the frame. I run it once per locale and get a matching set.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;To be clear about the bias: I work on SnapMonk, so take the plug for what it is. But the workflow above is the real lesson, and you can run it &lt;br&gt;
  manually if you'd rather. The tool just collapsed a week of layout babysitting into an afternoon, which is the only reason my listing is localized &lt;br&gt;
  at all.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;If you do one thing&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Localize your first screenshot in your two biggest non-English markets and watch the install rate for two weeks. That single image is the most-viewed asset in your entire listing. It's the cheapest high-leverage change I've found, and almost nobody does it.&lt;/p&gt;
