This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine

  What I Built

In Mexican tradition, we say a person dies three times.

The first death is when the body stops.

The second is burial.

The third, and final one, is when nobody says your name anymore.

Día de los Muertos exists to stop that third death.

Software dies the same way. A repo receives its final commit, gets archived, and is eventually forgotten along with everyone who poured their time and heart into building it.

La Tercera Muerte is a fully offline, local AI tool that exhumes an abandoned git repository and resurrects it as a ghost you can converse with — inside a haunted gothic terminal with flickering animated candles, marigold borders, and whispers that stir in the silence.

The ghost knows its own history. It remembers the people who built it. It speaks in the authentic voice of its era — a 2011 Python 2 utility sounds completely different from a 2020 Rust crate. It has unfinished business: a failing test, an abandoned
TODO
, or a dependency that broke years ago.

At the end of the ritual, the tool builds a digital ofrenda: a standalone, animated candlelit HTML altar committed directly back into the repository, with a glowing candle for every contributor and an AI-composed epitaph so their labor is never erased.

  The Five Rituals

#

Ritual

What happens

1

Exhumación

tercera exhume ./old-repo
— extracts git history, authors, TODOs, dependencies, and test commands

2

Acta de Defunción

Generates an aligned box-art death certificate: born, died, cause of death, last words, family

3

La Sesión

Haunted terminal séance — chat with the project's ghost powered by local RAG memory

4

Asuntos Pendientes

The ghost reveals what keeps it tethered to this world; a local coding agent proposes repairs

5

La Ofrenda

Commits
OFRENDA.md
+ standalone animated
ofrenda.html
altar honoring contributors

Spooky Extras: If you leave the terminal silent for 45 seconds, the idle timer triggers an ambient whisper from the ghost. Type
/whisper
to evoke spontaneous reflections from the grave.

Ethics Note: The ghost represents the project itself — never an impersonation of a real person. Contributors are honored by name and quoted only through their actual commit messages.

  Demo

Here is a real ritual run on Kenneth Reitz's abandoned
clint
library (279 commits, last updated in 2017):

*The candles flicker...*
I am clint. I was born 2011-03-20 and fell silent 2017-09-02.
My last words were: "Merge pull request #173 from EdwardBetts/spelling correct spelling mistake"
I remember 1 beloved dependencies, 279 moments of life, and 1 things left undone.
Ask me anything.

━━ ✦ ━━━ 💀 ━━━ ✦ ━━
You: why you died

Ghost: The world changed beneath my feet. Python 2, the breath of my youth,
reached its end in 2020. My creators moved on to requests and other horizons,
and I was left frozen with tests that never ran again...

Generates a standalone, fully offline
ofrenda.html
file right inside the repo:

Animated CSS candle flames for every single contributor.

Drifting marigold petal physics rendered with pure CSS/SVG.

Papel picado banners displaying original function names carved into digital paper flags.

An AI-summoned poetic epitaph honoring the project.

💀🕯️ Offline AI séance for dead code. Exhume an abandoned git repo, talk to its ghost, let a local coding agent finish its unfinished business, and build an ofrenda honoring its contributors.

💀 La Tercera Muerte

En México, decimos que uno muere tres veces.
La primera, cuando el cuerpo se detiene.
La segunda, cuando lo entierran.
La tercera, y la última, cuando nadie pronuncia su nombre.

Software dies the same way.

La Tercera Muerte is a fully offline AI tool that exhumes an abandoned git repository and turns it into a ghost you can talk to. It speaks in the voice of its era, remembers its own code, names its unfinished business, and — if you ask — lets an open-source coding agent try to resolve it. At the end, it builds a digital ofrenda: an animated candlelit HTML altar that honors every contributor by name, so they are never forgotten.

Built for Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge — Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.

  How I Built It

The 100% Open-Source AI Stack:

Ollama: Serves local inference on CPU/GPU. No API keys, zero cloud calls, zero telemetry.

Ghost Persona (
llama3.1:8b
or
gemma2:9b
): The system prompt is dynamically assembled from real git archaeology — the project's first commit, last words, era, contributors, dependencies, and unfinished TODOs.

RAG Memory (
nomic-embed-text
+ LanceDB): Chunks and embeds the codebase into an embedded vector database right on disk. When chatting, the most relevant code chunks surface as memories from the grave.

Haunted TUI (Textual): Features custom ASCII widgets with multi-frame animated candle flames, marigold decorations, streaming typewriter text, and idle background watchers.

Offline Ofrenda: Rendered with Jinja2 and pure CSS animations (no external CDNs, Google Fonts, or network dependencies).

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Every repository this tool resurrects died because an external dependency disappeared: a runtime reached end-of-life (like Python 2), a dependency vanished from a package manager, a CI provider shut down, or maintainers burned out.

Building a resurrection tool on top of a closed API that could deprecate models, hike prices, or shut down tomorrow would repeat the exact tragedy that killed these projects in the first place.

Where open innovation made the difference:

It works with the internet disconnected: A séance should be held by candlelight, not cloud servers. You can run this on a laptop in airplane mode with Wi-Fi toggled off.

Private code stays strictly private: Forgotten proprietary tools, unreleased prototypes, or personal repositories never leave your machine. Not a single token is sent to a third-party server.

Pinned, unalterable personalities: Closed models change under the hood with every silent update. Local open-weight models remain consistent forever.

Zero cost, zero rate limits: Resurrecting legacy repositories requires analyzing hundreds of commits and embedding entire codebases. Open models make this completely free.

Immunity to the third death: If this project is abandoned tomorrow, anyone can still run it ten years from now. The open-weight models exist. The code is MIT licensed.

  The Spirit of It

Día de los Muertos is not about mourning loss; it is an act of love and remembrance.

In the open-source ecosystem, millions of hours of human ingenuity lie asleep inside archived repositories. When a project is retired, the contributors who poured their weekends into it often slip into obscurity.

By treating dead codebases as artifacts with a voice, and creating an ofrenda that lights an individual candle for every single contributor, La Tercera Muerte turns codebase archaeology into an act of reverence:

La tercera muerte es cuando nadie pronuncia tu nombre.

Hoy pronunciamos tu nombre.

  Prize Categories

Top Prize / Overall Challenge — entirely open-weight, local-first architecture built around the three deaths tradition.

Best Use of Gemma — supports running Google's open-weight
gemma2:9b
(and
gemma:2b
for lightweight laptops) locally via Ollama with zero code changes; simply set
persona_model = "gemma2:9b"
in
config.toml
.

Best Día de los Muertos / Halloween Theme — built directly around the tradition of the three deaths and remembering forgotten labor.

Most Creative Use Case — an offline AI séance that turns abandoned git repositories into interactive ghosts.
