      <description>&lt;p&gt;Every company deploying AI agents right now is making the same mistake. They're building powerful, capable, autonomous systems — and leaving them completely unaccountable.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;No verified identity. No audit trail. No circuit breakers. No proof of what they did or why.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This is the "before" moment. The moment before regulations catch up, before an agent goes rogue and costs someone real money, before the first high-profile AI accountability lawsuit lands.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I've been building agent infrastructure for a while, and here's what I've learned: &lt;strong&gt;the accountability problem isn't hard to solve, but almost nobody is solving it&lt;/strong&gt;. This post is about how to do it.&lt;/p&gt;

  The Problem in Plain English
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Imagine you hire a contractor to renovate your house while you're on vacation. You give them a key, a budget, and instructions. When you come back:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Can you prove what they did and when?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Can you prove they stayed within budget?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Do you know if they let someone else in?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;If something went wrong, do you have a record you can show a judge?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Most AI agent deployments answer "no" to all of these. The agent ran. Things happened. You hope it went well. You have logs, maybe — if you remembered to set them up.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That's not accountability. That's hope.&lt;/p&gt;

  What Real Accountability Looks Like
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Real accountability infrastructure for AI agents has five components:&lt;/p&gt;

  1. Verified Identity
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Every agent that acts in your system needs a cryptographic identity. Not a username, not an API key, but a verifiable proof that &lt;em&gt;this specific agent, with this specific version and permissions, is making this request&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Without identity, you can't have audit trails. You can't have anything, because you don't know who did what.&lt;/p&gt;

  2. Permission-Scoped Actions
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Agents should declare what they're allowed to do before they do anything.&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;When the agent tries to do something outside its permissions, it fails with a clear record — not silently.&lt;/p&gt;

  3. Circuit Breakers
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Behavioral circuit breakers are fraud detection for agent actions. If an agent suddenly makes 50x its average requests, hits new endpoints, or spends 10x its budget: &lt;strong&gt;automatically suspend it&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The cost of implementing circuit breakers: a few hours.&lt;br&gt;
The cost of not implementing them: potentially catastrophic.&lt;/p&gt;

  4. Human Approval Queues
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;High-stakes actions — large payments, destructive operations, sending messages on behalf of humans — should pause and wait for explicit approval. This makes agents trustworthy. Trustworthy agents get deployed to production.&lt;/p&gt;

  5. Cryptographic Audit Trail
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Every action should be signed, timestamped, and logged in a tamper-evident way. Not just for debugging — for compliance, legal defensibility, and the moment someone asks "what exactly did your agent do, and when?"&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;AI agents are taking real-world actions with real-world consequences. Spending money. Sending emails. Making commitments. Accessing sensitive data.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Regulatory and legal responses are inevitable. Enterprise customers are already asking for audit trails. The builders who implement accountability infrastructure &lt;em&gt;before&lt;/em&gt; they're required to will have a massive competitive advantage.&lt;/p&gt;
