Building a music streaming application is a great way to explore mobile app development beyond basic screens and navigation.

Recently, I worked on a YouTube Music-inspired mobile application using React Native and Expo. The goal was to create a modern music application experience with music discovery, playlists, an interactive music player, and actual audio playback functionality.

In this article, I'll walk through the project, its main features, the technologies used, and some of the development concepts involved.

If you're learning React Native or looking for practical mobile app development projects, this walkthrough may be useful.

 1. Project Overview

The project is a music player application inspired by the familiar experience of YouTube Music.

Instead of creating just a static UI design, I wanted to explore a more interactive application with working music playback controls and multiple screens.

The application includes:

Modern dark-themed music interface.

Music discovery home screen.

Quick Picks and music mixes.

Interactive music player.

Play and pause functionality.

Previous and next track controls.

Music playback progress and seeking.

Up Next song queue.

Explore screen with music categories.

Music library and playlists.

Related songs section.

Persistent mini music player.

The project is built using React Native and Expo.

 2. Technologies Used

Here are the primary technologies used in this project:

Technology

Purpose

React Native

Cross-platform mobile application development

Expo

Development and application tooling

JavaScript

Application logic

React Components

Reusable UI components

Expo-compatible audio playback

Audio playback functionality

One important thing I learned while working on this project is that creating a music application involves more than designing attractive screens.

You also need to manage playback interactions, application state, song information, and the user experience across different screens.

 3. Designing the Home Screen

The home screen is the first place users interact with when opening the application.

I designed it around music discovery, with different sections that make browsing music easier.

Some of the main elements include:

Featured music banner.

Quick Picks.

Music thumbnails and artist information.

Mixed for You collections.

Music categories.

Persistent mini player.

The Quick Picks section provides quick access to available tracks, while the music mix cards create a familiar music streaming application experience.

Development concept: Reusable components are particularly useful here. Music cards, artwork thumbnails, and navigation elements can be structured as reusable UI components instead of duplicating the same layout throughout the application.

 4. Building the Interactive Music Player

The music player is one of the most important parts of this project.

I wanted the player to provide more than just a visual representation of a music application.

The player includes:

Album artwork.

Song title and artist information.

Play and pause controls.

Previous and next song controls.

Playback progress.

Seek functionality.

Shuffle and repeat controls.

Like and dislike interface.

Additional music interaction controls.

The application supports actual audio playback, making the player more interactive than a static UI demonstration.

Development concept: Audio playback requires coordination between playback state and the UI. For example, when a user pauses a song, the playback button should reflect the new state. When the user selects another song, the song information and player interface should update accordingly.

 5. Implementing the Up Next Queue

A music application should make it easy for users to understand what will play next.

For this reason, I included a dedicated Up Next screen.

It displays:

Currently playing song.

Upcoming songs.

Song thumbnails.

Artist information.

Active track highlighting.

Queue-related controls.

This feature demonstrates how a music queue can be represented in a mobile application.

It also introduces useful development concepts such as list rendering, selected-item state, and synchronizing the current track with the player interface.

 6. Creating the Explore Screen

The Explore screen focuses on music discovery.

It includes a search interface, trending searches, and different music categories.

Some categories included in the project are:

Charts

New Releases

Pop

Bollywood

Workout

Romance

Hip Hop

Chill

Rock

Indie

The idea is to make music discovery visually engaging and provide users with different ways to explore available tracks.

 7. Developing the Music Library

The Library screen provides a dedicated place to browse music collections.

It includes different sections for:

Playlists

Songs

Albums

Artists

Liked Music

My Favorites

Chill Vibes

Workout

Road Trip

Study Music

Party Hits

Each playlist displays its thumbnail, name, and song count.

This screen is also a useful example of organizing music-related information into reusable lists and collection components.

 8. Adding a Persistent Mini Music Player

Another useful feature is the mini music player.

It remains accessible while users browse the main application screens.

It displays:

Current song artwork.

Song title and artist.

Play and pause controls.

Next song control.

Playback progress indicator.

Option to expand the full player.

This creates a more consistent listening experience because users don't need to return to the full player screen every time they want to control playback.

 9. Understanding the Project Structure

A React Native application becomes easier to maintain when its screens, reusable components, and application logic are organized properly.

For a music player application like this, a useful conceptual separation is:

Screens: Home, Explore, Library, Player, Up Next, Related Songs.

Components: Song cards, music artwork, mini player, playback controls, playlist cards.

Playback logic: Current track, play/pause state, playback progress, next and previous track handling.

Music data: Song information, artists, playlists, and categories.

Navigation: Moving between application screens.

This is a conceptual organization of the application's responsibilities, not a representation of the exact source-code folder names.

When exploring the downloaded source code, check its actual folder structure and package configuration to understand how these responsibilities are implemented.

 10. Running a React Native Expo Project

If you're interested in experimenting with React Native and Expo, the general development workflow looks like this:

Step 1: Download the project

Obtain the project source code and extract the ZIP file.

Step 2: Open the project

Open the extracted folder in VS Code or your preferred development environment.

Step 3: Install dependencies

npm install

Step 4: Start the Expo development server

npx expo start

Step 5: Run the application

Use a compatible Android emulator, iOS simulator, or physical device.

Check the project's README and package.json for exact dependencies and any additional setup requirements.

 11. What Developers Can Learn From This Project

Working on a music application like this provides an opportunity to understand several important mobile development concepts.

Here are some areas worth exploring:

Building reusable React Native components.

Creating responsive mobile interfaces.

Managing application and playback state.

Implementing audio playback controls.

Rendering dynamic song lists and playlists.

Designing music discovery interfaces.

Building persistent mini-player experiences.

Organizing multi-screen mobile applications.

For developers building their own music applications, these concepts provide a practical starting point.

 12. Explore the Complete Project

If you want to explore the complete implementation rather than building every screen from scratch, I've published the project on SkillHost.

YouTube Music App Clone Using React Native & Expo

Project details and source code:

https://skillhost.in/projects/youtube-music-app-clone-using-react-native/

You can explore the project features, screenshots, technical details, and available download options on the project page.

SkillHost also features other React Native projects, developer tools, templates, and practical programming resources.

 Final Thoughts

Building this music application was a useful way to explore React Native development through a practical project.

It brings together several important concepts, including reusable UI components, audio playback, music discovery, playlists, and interactive player controls.

If you're learning React Native, I recommend experimenting with projects that combine multiple real-world application features instead of focusing only on individual UI screens.

Keep building, keep learning, and keep experimenting!

This is an independent educational development project inspired by the music discovery and playback experience of YouTube Music. It is not an official YouTube Music application and is not affiliated with Google.
