Hi all, I'm the lead developer of Steno and here to share the latest release 0.6.4. Steno is the highly secure privacy-first AI notepad & notetaker for the most sensitive conversations in government, healthcare, legal and finance. 🚀 We care about privacy deeply and unlike other notetakers, don't ship your data to our servers or train on it and our code is fully opensource.

Dev.to has always shown us a lot of love so we want to share our latest release here. We have really improved the product since last time thanks to our incredible opensource community :)

We struggled a lot with making transcription and summarisation smooth and stable for a while, but think we've eventually cracked it. A lot of performance testing and overnight test harness runs so we can ship stable releases.

Latest features in 0.6.4 include:

Save notes as PDF — export a meeting’s notes (summary, key topics, key points, action items, participants) as a branded, print-ready PDF from the note’s ⋯ menu. It’s rendered on-device, so nothing leaves your machine.
Revamped Settings UX - Press ⌘K on the Settings screen to search every setting and jump straight to the tab it lives on.
Start/Stop - Start/Stop transcription whenever you want and resummarise on demand, same as with Granola.

Hey folks, wanted to share the latest update of Steno. Steno is an opensource project for a privacy focused AI notepad that rivals Granola with the added benefit of having opensource code and keeping your data private. No cloud, no usage limits and completely free.

With v0.3.0, you now have the ability to:

Query across all your notes across time
Have diarised transcripts
Have conversational history of all your chats against notes
In our roadmap, we'll be releasing speaker diarisation and live transcription next :)

We have a great community of contributors and always looking for great people to improve and push the boundary on privacy, local LLM and opensource AI.

It's mainly aimed at privacy conscious users, for example, the German government uses it on Mac Studio.

Anyways, to the main point, saw this benchmark yesterday post release of qwen3.5 small models and it's incredible, the performance relative to much larger models. I was wondering if we are at an inflection point when it comes to AI models at edge: How are the big players gonna compete? A 9b parameter model is beating gpt-oss 120b!!
