CSS Houdini in Practice

CSS Houdini promised to let developers extend the browser's own styling engine. Ten years on, its five APIs have had five very different fates. @property works in every browser and is one of the most useful additions to CSS in years. The Typed OM works everywhere except Firefox. The Paint API runs only in Chrome and Edge. The Layout API and Animation Worklet never shipped, and native CSS now covers most of what people wanted them for.

Your Design System’s Biggest User Isn’t Human Anymore

Last year I watched an AI agent generate a full settings page in forty seconds.

It compiled. It looked reasonable. And it ignored our design system almost completely — hardcoded hex values, a hand-rolled dropdown, spacing that was almost our scale. It looked like our product the way a police sketch looks like a suspect.

The agent wasn’t the problem. Our design system was invisible to it.
