What I Built

Between October 31 (Halloween) and November 1–2 (Día de los Muertos), our calendars mark a poignant interval where the boundary between memory and presence feels porous. In Mexican tradition, this is not a time of fear or terror, but of tender remembrance. Families construct ofrendas (altars) adorned with fiery marigolds (cempasúchil), fragrant copal incense, pan de muerto, sugar skulls (calaveras), and portrait frames to welcome departed ancestors home for a feast of music, love, and laughter.

Ofrenda Digital translates this ancient heritage into a private, local-first interactive sanctuary and oral history weaver built around open-weight Google Gemma AI.

The candlelit 3-tier baroque altar featuring Doña Rosa and Don Mateo's memorial frames, traditional offerings, and procedural ambient strings.

Core Capabilities:

Interactive 3-Tier Baroque Altar (Los Tres Niveles):
- Tier 1 (El Cielo / The Heavens): Spiritual purity, grand baroque golden arched frames with inner velvet borders, copal incense burner with rising animated smoke curls, vessel of pure water, and sacred salt.
- Tier 2 (La Tierra / Earthly Remembrances): Loved ones' portrait gallery surrounded by their favorite earthly joys — freshly baked pan de muerto, clay pot coffee (café de olla), Spanish acoustic guitars, and secret family recipes.
- Tier 3 (El Inframundo / Mictlán & Roots): Vividly iced sugar skulls (calaveras de azúcar), autumn fruit baskets, and the luminous Marigold Carpet (Tapete de Cempasúchil) guiding path nodes (Doorway → Courtyard → Threshold → Ofrenda).
Authentic Scalloped Papel Picado Ribbon & Atmospheric Physics:
- Real-time clickable candles with flame flicker physics. Clicking a candle plays an authentic chime, increases the living flame counter ("Lit by the Family"), and dedicates light to an ancestor.
- Built-in procedural Web Audio synthesizer that generates contemplative nylon-string guitar arpeggios and resonant altar bell chimes without requiring external audio downloads or latency.
- Floating marigold petals drifting gently across the screen with natural ambient turbulence.
Open-Weight Gemma AI Remembrance Engine (Slide-Over Sanctuary Drawer):
- Oral History Preserver: Speak into your microphone (via Web Speech API) or type raw stream-of-consciousness childhood memories. Gemma synthesizes conversational snippets into enduring, literary biographical prose capsules on aged parchment with wax seals.
- Calaverita Literaria Studio: Gemma drafts traditional 4-stanza octosyllabic rhyming folk verses celebrating each person’s humor, favorite dishes, and endearing quirks in the classic style of José Guadalupe Posada.
- Altar Remembrance Letters: Generates formal, deeply moving eulogy letters to be placed beside family photos and read aloud at the altar.
- Ancestral Wisdom Dialogue (Ghost in the Machine): Ask an ancestor for life guidance or share what is on your heart. Gemma channels their voice, grounded in their personality, life values, and favorite sayings.
100% Offline & Private "Memory Capsules":
- Zero telemetry, zero external tracking, zero cloud server dependencies.
- Export and import full Memory Capsules (ofrenda-capsule.json) to keep on a private USB flash drive or pass down through generations.

"Most AI apps want your data, your subscription, and your Wi-Fi password. SnoozeScape asks for nothing—except your permission to turn on Airplane Mode and do absolutely nothing."

What I Built

Sloths move at 0.15 mph and sleep up to 20 hours a day. In honor of International Sloth Day, I built SnoozeScape 🦥: a 100% offline, airplane-mode bedtime companion for tired developers and overstimulated minds.

Instead of doom-scrolling, fiddling with complex apps, or paying $15/month for cloud sound apps, SnoozeScape turns your nightstand into an ambient sanctuary in one click:

Local Open-Weight Storyteller: Crafts original, calming bedtime stories using client-side open AI weights (SmolLM2 / Transformers.js) with soft read-aloud voice narration.
Mathematical Soundscape Synth: Synthesizes 6 ambient layers (Binaural Delta 4.5Hz Beats, Rain, Hearth Fire, Deep Brown Noise, Canopy Wind, Ocean Swell) using pure Web Audio math—zero MP3 files or network streaming.
Sleep Neuro-Lab & Mind Sanctuary: Live brainwave entrainment (Delta, Theta, Schumann, Alpha), a private Worry-to-Stardust Dissolution tool that melts stressful thoughts into celestial stardust, and a 90-minute REM sleep cycle calculator.
Sloth Auto-Fade: Gently diminishes audio to zero while dimming the screen to pitch black as you fall asleep.

Who gets to be lazier? Anyone trying to sleep. No logins, no typing, no Wi-Fi.

How I Built It

SnoozeScape was engineered around local-first open weights and zero-asset procedural computation:

Open-Source AI (Transformers.js v3): Runs Hugging Face open-weight models (SmolLM2 / Qwen2.5) directly in the user's browser via WebGPU and WASM. Zero server latency, zero API keys, and zero cloud dependency.
Procedural Web Audio API: Calculates multi-oscillator binaural frequencies, stochastic Poisson crackle for firewood, and biquad-filtered brownian noise on the fly.
Bento Box Architecture & Bespoke Vector Art: Custom nocturnal glassmorphism styled with 6 bespoke SVG vector illustrations, Aceternity-inspired cursor spotlight halos, and physical glass borders.
Hosting on Render: Automated Infrastructure-as-Code deployment using Render's Blueprint specification (render.yaml).

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation is the only reason SnoozeScape can exist:

Bedroom Privacy Sanctum: Sleep habits, bedtime routines, and whispers are intimate. Commercial apps track and monetize user habits. Because SnoozeScape runs open weights locally, zero bytes ever leave your device.
The Airplane Mode Paradox: Sleep scientists recommend turning off Wi-Fi in the bedroom to prevent EMF exposure and notification wake-ups. Closed APIs break without internet; open-weight models thrive completely offline.
No Subscription Traps: Cloud sleep apps charge recurring monthly fees. Open-source models and procedural Web Audio cost $0.00 forever.

My Agent Session

This entire application—from the procedural Web Audio synthesizers to the Sleep Neuro-Lab and Bento Box vector art—was co-developed pair-programming with Google DeepMind's Antigravity AI coding assistant.

Before SnoozeScape: Searching through YouTube for rain sounds (blasted by loud ads mid-sleep), fiddling with timers, adjusting screen brightness, and worrying about pausing audio.
With SnoozeScape:
1. Open laptop or phone.
2. Tap "Instant Sloth Mode".
3. Close eyes.

Total bedtime effort saved: 2.3 seconds to sleep. The sloth would approve.

💡 The Problem
