Have you ever looked at a competitor and wondered, “How are they getting so many customers?” You might offer similar services, have better products, or even have more experience. Yet somehow, their name seems to be everywhere. They show up on Google, their Instagram is active, people are leaving reviews, and their business keeps getting noticed. As a Freelance Digital Marketing Expert in Thrissur, I often see how online visibility can make a real difference in whether a business gets noticed or gets overlooked.

The truth is, being good at what you do does not always mean people will find your business. Competitors may not necessarily be better than you. Competitors may simply have an online presence. When people search for a product or service they usually pick from the businesses they can see. If competitors appear first and your business does not appear all you may lose that customer before they even learn about what you offer.

Think about the time you searched for a restaurant, salon, store or service online. You probably looked at the businesses that appeared in the search results checked competitors reviews, visited competitors social media and then made a choice. You could not consider every business in the area. You considered the businesses that were visible to you.

This is why online visibility matters much for small businesses. Your website, Google Business Profile, social media, reviews and content all play a part in helping people discover your business. You do not need to be active on every platform or post something every day. You just need to make sure that when someone looks for what you offer your business has a chance to be found.
Your website is one of the places people may visit after discovering your business. If it is outdated, difficult to use or does not clearly explain your services people may leave and check another business instead. The same is true for media. An inactive page can make a business look less active even when the business itself is doing well.

Reviews also make a difference. Before trying a business many people check what previous customers have said. A collection of reviews can help someone feel more comfortable choosing your business. It gives customers something beyond your own claims about how good your business is.

For businesses this becomes even more important. Someone searching for a service, in their area is already looking for a solution. If competitors appear while your business is difficult to find competitors get the opportunity to turn that search into a customer.

This does not mean you should copy everything competitors are doing. Instead look at what makes competitors easy to discover. Are competitors appearing in Google searches? Are competitors regularly sharing content? Do competitors have reviews? Is competitors website easy to understand? Once you identify where competitors are more visible you can work on those areas in a way that fits your business.

You do not need thousands of followers or a huge advertising budget to improve your presence. Start with the basics. Make sure your business information is accurate your website is clear your Google Business Profile is updated and your social media reflects what you actually offer. Then build from there.

Competitors may not have a business. Competitors may simply be doing a job of showing their business to the people who are looking for it.

Because sometimes the problem isn’t that customers don’t want what you offer. They just haven’t found you yet.

Why Your Brand Needs to Be Visible Beyond Google in 2026

 The Zero-Click Search Reality

The way people search for things has changed a lot. Now 60% of searches on Google do not result in a click. This number is expected to go up as answers generated by intelligence become more common. Googles own AI Overviews are now shown on some search results. When they appear the number of clicks on the traditional links below them decreases sharply. Studies have found that this decrease is between 45% and 60% depending on the type of search and how well the AI Overview answers the question.

The effect of this is simple: even if a page is ranked number one on Google it may not get much traffic as it would have a few years ago. This is because the users question is often answered right on the search results page. As a freelance marketing expert in Thrissur I see this happen with my small-business clients. Having a ranking on Google no longer guarantees visibility like it used to which is why the strategy needs to go beyond Google.

AI Search Is Where the New Competition Lives
Google is not going away. It is no longer the only place your brand needs to be. ChatGPT now handles billions of visits and prompts every month. Googles own AI Mode has become a destination in its right and tools like Perplexity, Gemini and Claude are becoming the starting points for research, comparisons and purchase decisions.

This has led to the development of a discipline alongside traditional SEO: Generative Engine Optimization or GEO. While classic SEO focuses on keywords and backlinks GEO is about whether an AI model trusts your brand to cite, describe or recommend it in a generated answer. This distinction matters because AI systems do not rank pages like search engines do. Instead they synthesize an answer from sources at once and your brand either makes it into that synthesis or it does not.

Importantly a large part of what AI platforms use to describe a brand does not come from the brands website. It comes from third-party sources like review platforms, comparison articles, LinkedIn posts, YouTube videos, forum threads and independent editorial coverage. This means that visibility beyond Google increasingly depends on visibility beyond your domain.

Why This Changes What “Marketing” Means

Several consequences follow from this shift and they apply whether you are a solo founder, a business or a marketing team managing a brand:

Rankings are no longer the finish line. A brand can rank well on Google. Still be absent from the AI-generated answers that a growing number of customers actually read. Tracking impressions and citations across AI platforms is becoming as important as tracking search rankings.

Earned media and reputation now double as SEO. Genuine reviews, credible third-party mentions and consistent accurate information about your brand across the web carry weight with AI systems than they ever did with traditional search algorithms. This is because AI models are trying to corroborate facts, not match keywords.

Content freshness and structure matter, not less. Research on AI citation behavior has found that updated pages earn more citations than stale ones and that content built around clear structure, statistics and well-sourced claims is more likely to be pulled into an AI-generated answer.
Having a presence on platforms is now a requirement for visibility. LinkedIn and YouTube are among the sources AI models reference often when describing companies and products. A brand with no presence on these platforms is essentially handing that part of the conversation to its competitors.

What Brands Should Actually Do About It

Being visible beyond Google does not mean abandoning SEO. It means widening the definition of what SEO covers. Here are a few starting points:

Audit where your brand already appears. Search your brand name and core products directly in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to see how or whether you are currently being described.

Build a presence on LinkedIn and YouTube as both are heavily referenced by AI systems when they need context on a company or product.

Prioritize reviews and third-party mentions over self-published claims; AI models weigh corroboration heavily.

Keep your cornerstone content current by updating your important pages regularly rather than leaving them untouched for years.

Write for entities, not keywords. Structure your content around topics, definitions and sourced data points as this is what AI systems extract easily.

Track citations, not rankings. Add AI-visibility monitoring alongside your existing Google Search Console and rank-tracking tools.

 Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google still important for SEO in 2026?
Yes Google still drives traffic and ranking well remains valuable. The shift is not away from Google but toward treating Google as one channel among several alongside AI search platforms and third-party discovery sources.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of structuring and distributing content so that AI systems, like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are more likely to cite, describe or recommend a brand when generating answers to user questions.

Do AI Overviews really reduce website traffic?

Multiple independent studies show that click-through rates fall significantly on results pages where an AI Overview appears since users often get their answer without visiting any site.
