Building a Task Management REST API with Node.js and Express.js

REST APIs are an important part of modern web applications because they allow different applications and services to communicate through standard HTTP requests. As part of my web development learning, I worked on a Task Management REST API using Node.js and Express.js. This project helped me understand how backend applications handle authentication, data management, validation, and CRUD operations.

The main goal of the project was to create an API through which users could register, log in, and manage their tasks. The API follows REST principles, where different HTTP methods are used for different operations. GET is used to retrieve data, POST creates new data, PUT or PATCH updates existing data, and DELETE removes data.

Node.js was used as the runtime environment, while Express.js provided the framework for creating routes and handling HTTP requests and responses. The project also included a database layer for storing user and task information. Organizing the application around routes and API endpoints made it easier to understand how frontend applications can communicate with a backend.

One important part of the project was user authentication. Passwords should not be stored directly in a database, so password hashing was implemented using bcrypt. After successful login, authentication can be handled using JSON Web Tokens (JWT). Protected routes can then verify the token before allowing users to access operations that require authentication.

The API also included CRUD functionality for tasks. Users can create a task, view existing tasks, update task information, and delete tasks when they are no longer required. Input validation helps prevent incomplete or invalid data from being accepted by the server. Appropriate HTTP status codes also make API responses easier for clients to understand.

Testing the endpoints was another important part of the development process. Tools such as Thunder Client or Postman can be used to send requests and check the responses returned by the API. Testing different scenarios, including invalid input and unauthorized requests, helps identify problems before connecting the API to a frontend application.

Working on this project gave me practical experience with backend development and helped me understand how REST APIs are structured in real-world applications. It strengthened my understanding of authentication, database operations, API testing, HTTP methods, and backend routing.

Node.js and Express.js provide a simple and flexible foundation for developing REST APIs. The concepts learned from this project can be extended to larger applications such as e-commerce platforms, learning management systems, project management tools, and other full-stack applications.
