Servo Hunt: Funding My Biped Bot Hips 🤖

Servo Hunt: Funding My Biped Bot Hips 🤖
Hey dev.to community! I'm Samuel Osei, and I'm building a bipedal robot from scratch. Today, I'm sharing my plans and seeking support to make this vision a reality.
The Project: A Walking Biped Robot
I'm designing a two-legged humanoid robot that can walk, balance, and potentially perform complex movements. Right now, I'm at a critical stage: building the hip mechanism — the core of legged locomotion.
Why the Hips Matter
The hip assembly is the most crucial part of any biped robot because it:
Controls leg movement in multiple degrees of freedom
Maintains balance during walking and standing
Transfers weight between legs smoothly
Determines walking stability and gait quality
Without a well-designed hip mechanism, the robot simply won't walk.
What I Need: High-Torque Servos
For the hips, I need 6 DOF (degrees of freedom) using high-torque digital servos:
I'm targeting servos like:
Dynamixel MX-64 or AX-12A (premium choice)
MG996R or FS90R (budget-friendly alternative)
Funding Goal: $300-$500
Here's where your support goes:
Servos: $200-$350
3D printing materials: $50-$80
Control board (Arduino/Raspberry Pi): $30-$70
Wiring, sensors, hardware: $20-$50
How You Can Help
Direct contribution: Any amount helps — even $10 buys servo hardware
Share this post: Reach more people in the robotics community
Offer advice: Tips on cost-effective servos or funding platforms
Collaborate: If you're building similar projects, let's partner up!
My Commitment to You
Every contributor will get:
✅ Regular build updates with photos/videos
✅ Open-source all designs and code on GitHub
✅ Credit in the project documentation
✅ A fully functional biped robot to inspire future builders
Next Steps
Once funded, I'll:
Order servos within 1 week
3D print hip components in 2 weeks
Assemble and test basic movement in 4 weeks
Share a walking demo video by month 2
Let's Build This Together
I believe in open-source robotics and community-driven innovation. This isn't just my project — it's ours. Every servo, every line of code, every design decision will be shared freely.
Drop a comment if you're interested, have advice, or want to contribute. Let's make biped robotics accessible to everyone! 🚀
My First Robot Steps by Samuel | Ghana Robotics Dreamer

Hey everyone! I'm Samuel, a 15-year-old from Accra, Ghana jumping into robotics with big dreams but zero startup cash. My goal? Build a walking explorer bot by end of 2026 that freelances online for me—bidding on writing gigs while chatting like my AI friend Perplexity. Crazy? Maybe, but I'm coding it step by step!
From Phone to Laptop
Started on Android with Pydroid 3, messing with Python loops. Now rocking my HP EliteBook (Windows 10, 8GB RAM) for real work. First mission: code a walking gait.
Here's my baby sine wave script—alternating legs like a real robot toddler:
import math
import time

time_step = 0.1
for t in range(100):
left_leg = math.sin(t * 0.5) * 30 # Degrees up/down
right_leg = math.sin((t * 0.5) + 3.14) * 30 # Opposite phase
print(f"Step {t}: Left={left_leg:.1f}°, Right={right_leg:.1f}°")
time.sleep(time_step)
Run it and BOOM—smooth alternating steps! Next up: PyBullet simulator for 3D testing (free download).
Why This Bot?
World's changed—bots do risky jobs safer. Mine will:
Scan Upwork/Fiverr for writing gigs
Generate articles using AI prompts
Voice chat with me via mic/camera
Earn cash for Raspberry Pi + servos
Zero-Cash Startup
Free Python + VS Code
Post samples on dev.to/Medium
Land $5 writing gigs → buy hardware
Beginners—start TODAY! What's YOUR first robot dream? Drop a comment!

My First Robot Steps
Hey, I'm Samuel, a 15-year-old from Ghana diving into robotics with zero cash but big dreams. Picture this: a walking explorer bot that freelances online for me, chatting like my AI pal Perplexity while scouting the world. No joke—that's my end-of-2026 goal!
It started on my phone with Pydroid, hacking simple Python loops. Now on my HP EliteBook (Windows 10, 8GB RAM), I'm leveling up. First challenge? Coding a walk. Robots don't stumble like us—they need smooth gaits.
Here's my baby script testing sine waves for legs:
import math
import time

time_step = 0.1
for t in range(100):
left_leg = math.sin(t * 0.5) * 30 # Degrees up/down
right_leg = math.sin((t * 0.5) + 3.14) * 30 # Opposite phase
print(f"Step {t}: Left={left_leg:.1f}°, Right={right_leg:.1f}°")
time.sleep(time_step)
Run that, and boom—alternating steps like a pro toddler bot! Next, I'll plug it into PyBullet simulator (free download) for 3D crashes and fixes.
Why build this? The world's changed—bots are safer for risky jobs. Mine will bid on Upwork writing gigs (starting with tech blogs like this), earning for servos and a Raspberry Pi. Voice chat via mic, camera eyes streaming to AI brains—talk ideas, get drafts, submit wins.
Beginners, start here: Free Python, VS Code, Medium posts for portfolio. No money? No problem—hustle samples, land $5 gigs, scale up.
Who's with me? Drop a comment—what's your first robot dream?
