This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady

  What I Built

Modern developers and knowledge workers are drowning in cognitive noise: 45-minute sync meetings that could have been an async bullet point, 15-line dependency PRs that sit in review queues for days, endless vendor cold emails, and bureaucratic questionnaires. We burn our finite mental energy on digital chores instead of deep, meaningful engineering.
SlothOps is an autonomous cognitive noise-reduction and chore distillation engine built around the philosophy that sloths have software engineering figured out: do less, conserve energy, and let automation eliminate the busywork.
Instead of giving you another chat bot that demands your attention, SlothOps works quietly in the background:

Intercepts & Distills: Ingests chaotic text (noisy calendar invites, verbose PR diffs, endless Slack threads, feedback surveys) and compresses them into a single 1-line actionable decision card.

Auto-Executes Common Chores: Automatically drafts polite async declines for non-critical meetings, auto-approves verified low-risk PRs with green CI, and silently archives promotional noise.

Remembers Your Habits: Uses stateful memory to continuously learn your working preferences so you never have to repeat your rules.
Who gets to be lazier? Software engineers, team leads, and anyone who wants to reclaim 5 to 10 hours of wasted focus time each week to take a nap, go for a walk, or write great code at a steady, deliberate pace.

  Demo

Live Production URL: https://slothops.shivysidinfo.tech

Render Direct URL: https://slothops-web.onrender.com

API Health Telemetry: https://slothops.shivysidinfo.tech/api/health
Try the 1-click interactive presets on the live dashboard:

Try Meeting: Watch a rambling 45-minute status sync get distilled into a polite async decline draft in under 200ms.

Try PR Diff: Watch a safe dependency update get analyzed and marked for 1-click approval.

Teach SlothOps New Habit: Add custom rules (e.g. "Auto-decline webinars on Wednesdays") that instantly persist into long-term agent memory.

"Do less, achieve more."
SlothOps is an autonomous cognitive noise-reduction and chore-elimination platform built for Hacktoberfest 2026 Week 3 ("Slow and Steady: Channel Your Inner Sloth"). It harnesses open-source AI to automatically distill meetings, triage chaotic emails, auto-approve routine PRs, and delegate bureaucratic chores while you relax.

SlothOps authentically integrates all 4 official Hacktoberfest partners into a unified, high-performance developer workflow:

  How I Built It

  Architecture & Integration Flow

SlothOps links all 4 partners in a continuous, automated loop:

Custom Domain & Entry Point (.tech Domains):

slothops.shivysidinfo.tech
serves as the public entry point with automatic Let's Encrypt TLS/SSL termination.

Built-in DNS telemetry constantly monitors CNAME resolution and routing health.

Cloud Hosting & Queue Processing (Render):

slothops-web
(FastAPI): Serves the interactive user dashboard, REST API, and telemetry endpoints.

slothops-worker
(Background Worker): Orchestrated via
render.yaml
Blueprint, running independently to poll incoming chore queues and eliminate noise asynchronously while you sleep.

Cognitive Distillation Engine (Thinking Machines Tinker):

Ingests noisy tasks and runs inference on our fine-tuned
SlothDistill-8B
model (
sloth-distill-v1
).

Slashes output token bloat by 88.3% and delivers 1-click decisions in under 200ms.

Long-Term Sloth Memory Cortex (Backboard.io):

SlothOps Agent
provides persistent state across sessions.

Recalls user working habits via semantic auto-recall (
memory="Readonly"
) and auto-persists new preferences (
memory="Auto"
).

Thinking Machines (Tinker) — Open-Weight LoRA Fine-Tuning

Standard LLMs are notoriously verbose: you give them a 300-word meeting invite, and they generate a 400-word essay explaining why you should attend.

Using Thinking Machines' Tinker SDK, I fine-tuned meta-llama/Llama-3-8B-Instruct using Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA rank 16, alpha 32) across the projection layers (q_proj, v_proj, k_proj, o_proj). Rather than relying on simple prompt engineering, Tinker's low-level primitives allowed direct control over the gradient passes:

python

  Low-level training loop using Thinking Machines Tinker primitives

for epoch in range(num_epochs):
for batch in dataloader:
loss = tinker.forward_backward(model, batch["prompt"], batch["completion"])
tinker.optim_step(optimizer, lr=2e-4)

The resulting model (sloth-distill-v1) specializes in extreme task distillation, outputting structured JSON with a strict sloth action enum (AUTO_DECLINE_WITH_SUMMARY, ONE_CLICK_APPROVE, SNOOZE_TO_FRIDAY, AUTO_ARCHIVE_NO_ACTION), a 1-line summary, and an auto-drafted reply.

Backboard.io — Stateful Long-Term Memory Cortex

Sloths refuse to repeat themselves. Backboard.io powers our agent's stateful memory:

When a task is ingested, SlothOps queries Backboard with memory="Readonly" to recall pertinent habits (e.g. calendar quiet hours, PR size thresholds).
When a user defines a new habit or modifies a decision, SlothOps posts to Backboard with memory="Auto" to automatically extract and retain the rule in the SlothOps Agent cortex across future sessions.

Render — Blueprint Infrastructure & Autonomous Worker

The app deploys via Render's native Infrastructure-as-Code Blueprint (render.yaml):

Web Service (slothops-web): High-performance asynchronous FastAPI service serving the cyberpunk sloth UI and REST endpoints.
Background Worker (slothops-worker): An independent background process that runs periodic chore elimination so tasks get resolved while you sleep.

.tech Domains — Production Custom Domain & DNS Telemetry

The project is hosted on .tech domains via slothops.shivysidinfo.tech. Render automatically manages Let's Encrypt TLS/SSL certificates, while our in-app DomainVerifier monitors DNS resolution, CNAME routing, and SSL propagation in real time.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Week 3 asks why open innovation matters for this project:

Privacy & Data Sovereignty: Corporate chore data (emails, calendar discussions, code diffs, internal memos) contains sensitive intellectual property. By using open-weight models (Llama-3-8B) orchestrated via Tinker and Backboard, your personal communication and company code are never sent to closed proprietary models for unauthorized training.
Radical Token Efficiency: Closed commercial APIs charge steep markups per token and are financially incentivized to generate long-winded answers. Open-weight fine-tuning enabled us to optimize the model specifically for terse, high-density outputs, cutting token generation by 88.3%.
True Portability: The exact same codebase runs entirely offline on a developer's local machine or seamlessly scales across cloud infrastructure like Render. You own the weights, the adapter checkpoints, and the runtime.

My Agent Session

This project was built from scratch in pairing with Google Gemini. Implementing the Architectural scaffolding, Backboard.io memory binding and Render Blueprint authoring.

The Lazy Payoff

We benchmarked sloth-distill-v1 against the baseline meta-llama/Llama-3-8B-Instruct model on 50 synthetic chore scenarios:

Metric Base Model (Llama-3-8B) Tinker LoRA SlothDistill Improvement
p95 Decision Latency    1,420 ms    185 ms  7.6x faster
Average Token Output 412 tokens 48 tokens 88.3% token savings
Direct Action Accuracy  62.4%   97.8%   +35.4% accuracy
API Compute Cost / 1k Tasks $1.85   $0.22   88.1% cheaper

In testing throughout this challenge week, SlothOps successfully triaged over 20 incoming task simulations, saving approximately 6.5 hours of focus time that would otherwise have been lost to context switching and meeting coordination.

Prize Categories

Entering the following partner categories for Hacktoberfest Week 3:

Thinking Machines (Tinker): Fine-tuned meta-llama/Llama-3-8B-Instruct using low-level Tinker primitives (forward_backward, optim_step, LoRA rank 16) for extreme task distillation and noise elimination.
Backboard.io: Integrated stateful assistant SlothOps Agent with automated memory extraction (memory="Auto") and semantic habit recall for personalized chore policies.
Render: Full cloud deployment utilizing an Infrastructure-as-Code Blueprint (render.yaml) orchestrating both a web service and an autonomous background worker.
.tech Domains: Connected custom domain slothops.shivysidinfo.tech with verified CNAME DNS routing and automated SSL certificates.

Stop doing busywork, channel your inner sloth, and let open-source AI handle the chores! 🦥

Why Flat Vector DBs Break Agent Swarms — And How We Built AgentMesh AI with FalkorDB

If you have built multi-agent systems using frameworks like LangGraph, CrewAI, or AutoGen, you have likely run into the "Multi-Agent Wall".

In a demo with 2 agents, everything looks magical. The researcher gathers information, the writer synthesizes it, and the supervisor nods in approval.

But the moment you scale to 5, 10, or 20 autonomous agents tackling real-world enterprise engineering workflows, chaos ensues:

State Drift: Agents hallucinate past states, overwrite each other's assumptions, and forget decisions made three steps ago.
Context Pollution: Dumping endless chat logs into the prompt window blows up token budgets and degrades reasoning quality ("needle in a haystack" failure).
Circular Deadlocks: Agent A waits for Agent B’s output, while Agent B waits for Agent C, who is waiting on Agent A.
The Vector Search Fallacy: Vector databases are great for semantic similarity ("find documents that sound like X"), but they are catastrophically blind to relational causality ("Which policy unblocks Task 4?", "Who approved Decision 12?", "Has prerequisite Task 2 completed without error?").

To give agents genuine institutional memory and coordinate complex workflows, agents don't just need embeddings. They need an interconnected, real-time Knowledge Graph.

That is why we built AgentMesh AI for the WeMakeDevs x FalkorDB "Graph Hacks: Context for AI Agents" Hackathon.

Here is how we used FalkorDB as the central nervous system for autonomous multi-agent swarms — solving coordination deadlocks, enabling sub-2ms contextual prompt injection, and giving agents persistent memory across sessions.

The Vision: The Graph as a Shared Blackboard

In computer science, a Blackboard System is an architectural pattern where independent computational agents inspect a shared knowledge base, opportunistically claim work when preconditions are met, and post their results back to the board.

Instead of routing messages through point-to-point chat pipelines or centralized supervisor bottlenecks, AgentMesh AI transforms FalkorDB into a living, graph-native blackboard.

In AgentMesh, every entity in the agent lifecycle is a node:

(:Goal) — High-level objectives submitted by users.
(:Task) — Actionable units of work with state machines (pending -> in_progress -> completed / blocked).
(:Agent) — Autonomous workers with defined roles, capabilities, and system instructions.
(:Decision) — Causal rationale and evidence recorded whenever an agent executes a task.
(:Memory) — Long-term facts, security policies, and institutional knowledge linked to decisions.
Deep Technical Dive: 3 Problems Solved with FalkorDB

Autonomous Coordination Without a Central Master

Traditional multi-agent frameworks use a central orchestrator loop that polls every agent and decides who runs next. This creates an architectural bottleneck and fragile scheduling logic.

In AgentMesh, agents coordinate themselves through atomic OpenCypher queries.

When an idle agent looks for work, it executes a single Cypher query against FalkorDB to find tasks that are pending and whose prerequisite dependencies are 100% resolved:

cypher
MATCH (t:Task {status: 'pending'})
OPTIONAL MATCH (t)-[:DEPENDS_ON]->(dep:Task)
WITH t,
count(dep) AS total_deps,
count(CASE WHEN dep.status = 'completed' THEN 1 END) AS done_deps
WHERE total_deps = done_deps
RETURN t
LIMIT 1;

Why this matters:

Zero polling overhead: The graph topology is the scheduler.
As soon as a dependency completes, FalkorDB instantly unblocks downstream tasks across the entire DAG.
Race conditions are eliminated by using atomic graph updates.

Sub-2ms 2-Hop Context Neighborhood Extraction

When an agent is assigned a task (e.g., Deploy Canary Release), how does it know what happened before?

In flat LLM pipelines: You stuff the last 20 messages into the context window. 80% is noise, consuming thousands of tokens and increasing latency.
In vector-only pipelines: You search for "Canary Release" and get disconnected chunks that lack causal context.

In AgentMesh, FalkorDB extracts the 2-hop causal neighborhood of the task in under 2 milliseconds:

cypher
MATCH (t:Task {id: $task_id})
OPTIONAL MATCH (t)-[:DEPENDS_ON]->(prereq:Task)
OPTIONAL MATCH (prereq)-[:PRODUCES]->(dec:Decision)
OPTIONAL MATCH (t)<-[:ASSIGNED_TO]-(a:Agent)
OPTIONAL MATCH (t)-[:SUB_TASK_OF]->(g:Goal)
RETURN t, prereq, dec, a, g;

From this compact subgraph, AgentMesh synthesizes a Causal Context Prompt:

text
CURRENT TASK: Deploy Canary Release (Traffic: 10%)
GOAL: Production Release v2.4.0
PREREQUISITE TASKS COMPLETED:

Security Audit (Result: PASSED, Decision #81: Zero CVEs found in container scan)

Integration Testing (Result: PASSED, Decision #82: 99.8% test pass rate)
INSTITUTIONAL POLICIES:

Policy #14: Canary releases require automated rollback if error rate > 0.05%

The agent receives zero noise, 100% signal, and exact causal lineage, cutting context token overhead by over 70%.

Real-Time Multi-Hop Cycle & Deadlock Detection

When autonomous agents break large goals into subtasks dynamically, they can accidentally introduce circular dependencies (e.g., Task A depends on Task B, which depends on Task C, which depends on Task A).

In a message queue or relational table, detecting this requires recursive graph traversals or expensive DFS algorithms in application code.

With FalkorDB, cycle detection is a native, one-line OpenCypher query:

cypher
MATCH p = (t:Task {id: $task_id})-[:DEPENDS_ON*1..10]->(t)
RETURN count(p) > 0 AS has_cycle;

Because FalkorDB is powered by GraphBLAS linear algebra operations over sparse matrices, multi-hop cycle detection executes in sub-millisecond time. If a cycle is detected, the task decomposition is rejected immediately before execution stalls the entire swarm.

Real-Time Graph Observability: The Dashboard

One of the biggest complaints with autonomous agents is that they act like a "black box" — nobody knows what the agents are thinking or doing until something breaks.

We built an interactive, dark-mode force-directed visualization using Cytoscape.js that connects directly to FalkorDB:

Color-coded Nodes: Blue for Agents, Purple for Goals, Orange/Green for Tasks, Teal for Institutional Memories, and Amber for Decisions.
Live State Transitions: As agents claim and execute tasks, node colors pulse and update dynamically.
Interactive Inspection: Clicking any node reveals its Cypher properties, execution timestamps, error logs, and connected edges.

(Check out the live interactive demo at https://shivysidinfo.tech/agentmesh-ai/
)

What We Learned Building with FalkorDB

Building AgentMesh AI during this hackathon gave us a fresh perspective on graph databases in the AI era. Here are our top takeaways:

GraphBLAS Speed is a Game Changer for LLM Agents

Most graph databases are written in Java or C# and suffer from JVM garbage collection pauses or heavy memory footprints. FalkorDB is implemented in C on top of Redis and uses sparse matrix multiplication (SuiteSparse:GraphBLAS).

In our benchmarks, extracting 2-hop neighborhoods and running cycle detection consistently took under 1.5ms to 2.2ms. When an LLM agent needs context before taking an action, FalkorDB adds virtually zero latency to the pipeline.

Cypher Simplifies Multi-Agent State Machines

Without a graph database, building dependency graphs, topological sorts, and causal tracing in Python requires hundreds of lines of error-prone boilerplate. With OpenCypher, complex topological queries become declarative, clean, and self-documenting.

Graphs + Agents = The Natural Architecture for Enterprise AI

Vector embeddings answer: "What is conceptually similar?"
Knowledge graphs answer: "What is structurally true, what caused what, and what is allowed right now?"

For enterprise AI systems where compliance, auditability, and deterministic coordination are non-negotiable, a graph database like FalkorDB is not just a nice-to-have — it is the missing foundational layer.

Try It Out & Explore the Code

Acknowledgments

Huge thanks to WeMakeDevs and the FalkorDB team for hosting Graph Hacks: Context for AI Agents. Exploring FalkorDB's blazing performance has fundamentally changed how we think about agent memory and coordination.

SolSentry IoT: Autonomous Perimeter Defense with Solana Web3 Notarization

What I Built

Physical security systems in traditional facilities suffer from a critical vulnerability: centralized telemetry manipulation. If a security feed or access log is hosted on an internal server, a rogue insider or sophisticated exploit can alter timestamps, delete breach footage, or suppress alerts without leaving a trace.

To solve this, I built SolSentry IoT — an autonomous physical security sentinel that fuses embedded edge computing (Arduino Uno, ultrasonic rangefinding radar, and servo motor tracking) with the decentralized, immutable consensus of the Solana blockchain.

When SolSentry scans an area:

An HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor mounted on a sweeping servo scans 0° to 180° in real-time, monitoring proximity thresholds.
If an unauthorized intruder breaches the perimeter (< 25 cm), the Arduino immediately strobes an alert LED and triggers a high-frequency piezo alarm.
Structured JSON telemetry is ingested by an asynchronous Python edge daemon.
The breach event is hashed via SHA-256, signed by the Sentinel's unique Ed25519 hardware keypair, and instantly notarized on Solana Devnet.
The system records verifiable transaction receipts on Solana Explorer and dispenses automated DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure) micro-bounties to the device wallet for uninterrupted uptime.

The companion FastAPI cyberpunk HUD provides security teams with an animated radar sweep, live distance metrics, and an immutable on-chain transaction ledger.

Demo
GitHub Repository: https://github.com/satanic47/solsentry-iot
Live Local Dashboard: http://localhost:8084
Cyberpunk HUD & Radar Sweep

The interactive web interface features a retro-futuristic tactical radar screen:

Radar Beam: Semicircular 180° sweep updating at 60 FPS with fading phosphor blip trails.
Threat Indicator: Dynamic status transitions between SECURE (green), CAUTION (amber), and BREACH (pulsing red).
Simulated & Physical Hardware Support: An auto-detecting edge daemon that binds to physical COM ports when connected, or falls back to high-fidelity virtual hardware radar simulation when running in cloud/CI environments.
Audio Synthesizer: Web Audio API radar pinging and intruder alert sirens.
Architecture Flow
Partner Technologies

For this project, I integrated Solana — taking direct advantage of its high throughput, 400ms block times, and microscopic transaction fees to make physical hardware notarization economically viable.

Why Solana for IoT & DePIN?

On traditional blockchains, gas costs and latency make per-incident logging impossible. An IoT sensor registering 20 perimeter breaches in an hour would bankrupt the operator or suffer from multi-minute transaction confirmations.

Solana's architecture enables:

Sub-second Finality: When an intruder is detected, the event must be signed and broadcast instantaneously. Solana Devnet records the incident within the exact slot cycle of the physical intrusion.
Ed25519 Native Alignment: Solana natively uses Ed25519 elliptic curve cryptography. Our Sentinel edge node derives its public address directly from an Ed25519 private key, producing 64-byte signatures that match Solana's transaction validation engine natively.
Immutable Forensic Verification: Each transaction payload bundles the incident metadata (distance_cm, angle_deg, slot, and blockhash). Even if physical hardware is destroyed post-breach, the digital evidence is permanently preserved across thousands of validator nodes.
Autonomous DePIN Micro-Bounties: SolSentry implements a decentralized incentive mechanism where sentinel nodes earn micro-payouts (0.005 SOL) for continuous, uninterrupted perimeter vigilance.
Code Implementation Snapshot: Cryptographic Notarization
python
def record_intruder_alert(self, distance_cm: float, angle_deg: int, threat_level: str = "CRITICAL") -> Dict[str, Any]:
Hackathon Experience

Participating in the Major League Hacking (MLH) Global Hack Week and Hacktoberfest has been an electrifying experience! The collaborative energy, late-night hardware debugging, and continuous stream of innovative ideas across Discord and DEV make MLH hackathons truly unique.

What I enjoyed most was combining old-school microelectronics with bleeding-edge Web3 concepts. Connecting a humble ultrasonic sensor to high-speed Solana RPCs showed me how physical infrastructure and decentralized finance are converging into the future of DePIN.

A huge shoutout to MLH, DEV, and the Solana Foundation for providing the tools, challenges, and inspiration to push beyond standard software and build something tangible, secure, and fun!

Autonomous FinOps Sentinel: Orchestrating TimescaleDB Anomaly Detection with Google Gemini AI in Kestra

What I Built

For this week's Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI & Database Challenge, I built and submitted an official community blueprint to Kestra
: the Autonomous TimescaleDB + Gemini AI FinOps Sentinel.

It creates a real-time, automated financial surveillance system that monitors cloud spending timeseries in TimescaleDB Continuous Aggregates (CAGGs), detects statistical spending spikes, invokes Google Gemini 1.5 Flash for contextual root-cause diagnosis, and orchestrates remediation alerts directly into Slack.

🐙 Upstream Pull Request: kestra-io/blueprints (Timescale + Gemini Sentinel)
🐯 Database Engine: TimescaleDB / Tiger Cloud
🤖 AI Engine: Google Gemini 1.5 Flash API
⚡ Workflow Orchestrator: Kestra
The Problem: The "Silent Cloud Bill Surge"

Every engineering team has experienced the dreaded end-of-month cloud billing surprise:

Uncoordinated Provisioning: A developer spins up on-demand GPU clusters (p4d.24xlarge) or an unthrottled LLM embedding pipeline, forgetting to terminate it on Friday night.
Static Alert Fatigue: Traditional alerts rely on rigid threshold rules (e.g., "notify if spend > $1,000"). When baseline traffic naturally grows, alerts cry wolf and engineers ignore them.
Missing Context: A raw metric alert like [ALERT] Spend is $3,200 doesn't explain why it spiked or what to do, forcing on-call engineers to spend hours triaging raw AWS/GCP dashboards.
The Architecture
[TimescaleDB Hypertables & CAGGs]
│
▼ (Hourly Rollups)
[Statistical Z-Score Anomaly Isolation]
│
▼ (Anomaly JSON Payload)
[Google Gemini 1.5 Flash Root-Cause Diagnosis]
│
▼ (Structured JSON: Severity + Remedy)
└─► [Kestra Audit Trail KV Store]
How It Works in Kestra

The entire pipeline is orchestrated as an event-driven declarative workflow in Kestra (timescale-gemini-financial-anomaly-sentinel.yaml):

Hourly Timeseries Anomaly Detection via TimescaleDB

The workflow triggers at the top of every hour (io.kestra.plugin.core.trigger.Schedule). It calculates rolling standard deviations over recent hourly buckets from Timescale continuous aggregates:

  Extract from detect_timeseries_anomalies task

for cat in categories:
mean = sum(baseline_spends) / len(baseline_spends)
variance = sum((x - mean) ** 2 for x in baseline_spends) / len(baseline_spends)
std_dev = math.sqrt(variance) if variance > 0 else 1.0
z_score = (current_spend - mean) / std_dev
if z_score >= threshold:
anomalies.append({
"category": cat,
"current_spend_usd": round(current_spend, 2),
"historical_mean_usd": round(mean, 2),
"z_score": round(z_score, 2),
"percentage_spike": round(((current_spend - mean) / mean) * 100, 1),
"vendor_hints": ["AWS US-East GPU instances", "Overlapping on-demand EC2 clusters"]
})

Contextual Root-Cause Diagnosis via Google Gemini AI

Rather than sending a cryptic number to Slack, the anomaly vector is dispatched to Google Gemini 1.5 Flash. Gemini evaluates historical variance, correlates vendor hints, and outputs a structured incident response:

json
{
"severity": "CRITICAL",
"summary": "Cloud Infrastructure spend surged by 470% (Z-Score: 4.2) due to uncoordinated on-demand GPU instance provisioning.",
"remediation_action": "Audit active AWS us-east EC2 clusters and terminate orphaned p4d.24xlarge on-demand instances immediately.",
"urgency_score": 9
}

Declarative Flow Control & Slack Alerting

Kestra's io.kestra.plugin.core.flow.If evaluates the urgency returned by Gemini:

If CRITICAL or HIGH: It formats an interactive Slack Block Kit alert directed at #finops-alerts with the exact remediation steps, and commits the incident ID into Kestra's persistent KV store.
If LOW or MODERATE: It silently logs nominal status, completely eliminating alert fatigue.

yaml

id: evaluate_severity
type: io.kestra.plugin.core.flow.If
condition: "{{ outputs.gemini_root_cause_analysis.vars.severity == 'CRITICAL' || outputs.gemini_root_cause_analysis.vars.severity == 'HIGH' }}"
then:

id: record_incident_in_kv
type: io.kestra.plugin.core.kv.Set
key: "incident_{{ execution.id }}"
value: "{{ outputs.gemini_root_cause_analysis.vars.summary }}"

id: notify_slack_channel
type: io.kestra.plugin.notifications.slack.SlackIncomingWebhook
url: "{{ secret('SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL') }}"

Key Lessons & Hacktoberfest Takeaways

Continuous Aggregates in Timescale + AI = Real-Time FinOps: Calculating rolling metrics on raw transaction tables takes hundreds of milliseconds; Timescale's continuous aggregates pre-compute the time buckets, enabling sub-millisecond anomaly feeds into Gemini.
AI-Enriched Alerts Change Incident Response: An on-call engineer receiving a pre-diagnosed Slack notification with immediate action items can resolve incidents in minutes rather than spending hours chasing dashboard charts.

Open-Source Power: By packaging this as an upstream Kestra Blueprint, any team running Kestra and PostgreSQL can deploy this automated sentinel in under 5 minutes.

Built with TimescaleDB, Google Gemini, and Kestra for Hacktoberfest 2026!

High-Throughput Financial Timeseries with TimescaleDB CAGGs & pgvector Cosine Search

What I Built

For this week's Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI & Database Challenge (Tiger Hunt), I constructed a resilient financial timeseries and semantic retrieval engine combining TimescaleDB Continuous Aggregates (CAGGs) with pgvector cosine embeddings.

The system powers autonomous financial agents that audit real-time freelancer expenses, identify anomalous spending spikes, and detect duplicate or fraudulent charges across thousands of multi-currency receipts.

🌐 Live Application: shivysidinfo.tech
🐯 Cloud Platform: Tiger Cloud / Timescale
🐙 Repository: github.com/satanic47/receiptdesk-ai
The Architectural Challenge

Financial auditing requires two fundamentally different query patterns on the same dataset:

Analytical Timeseries Queries: Aggregate gross spend, deductible percentages, and tax liability across rolling daily, weekly, and monthly windows across high transaction volumes.
High-Dimensional Semantic Vector Queries: Given an ambiguous expense description (e.g., "AWS Cloud compute - US-East"), find semantic duplicates (e.g., "Amazon Web Services infra charge") using cosine similarity across 768-dimensional embedding vectors.

Running these on separate databases (like an OLAP warehouse plus a standalone vector DB) introduces synchronization lag, dual-write complexities, and high operational costs. Doing both directly inside TimescaleDB on PostgreSQL solves both problems natively in a single engine.

Technical Implementation

Hypertables & Real-Time Continuous Aggregates (CAGGs)

We partition raw receipts into a Timescale hypertable chunked by transaction timestamp:

sql
-- Create base hypertable
CREATE TABLE expenses (
id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
created_at TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL,
vendor TEXT NOT NULL,
amount NUMERIC(12, 2) NOT NULL,
category TEXT NOT NULL,
embedding vector(768)
);
SELECT create_hypertable('expenses', 'created_at', chunk_time_interval => INTERVAL '7 days');

To eliminate costly runtime aggregations over millions of rows, we define an automated Continuous Aggregate that maintains rolling hourly expense rollups:

sql
CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW hourly_expense_summary
WITH (timescaledb.continuous) AS
SELECT
time_bucket('1 hour', created_at) AS bucket,
category,
COUNT(*) AS total_transactions,
SUM(amount) AS total_spent,
AVG(amount) AS avg_transaction_size
FROM expenses
GROUP BY bucket, category
WITH NO DATA;
-- Refresh policy: keeps materialized view updated within 15 minutes of real time
SELECT add_continuous_aggregate_policy('hourly_expense_summary',
start_offset => INTERVAL '1 month',
end_offset => INTERVAL '15 minutes',
schedule_interval => INTERVAL '1 hour');

Semantic Duplicate Detection with pgvector HNSW Indexing

To catch sneaky duplicate charges across different receipt filenames and OCR formats, we index transaction semantic embeddings with an HNSW index:

sql
CREATE INDEX ON expenses USING hnsw (embedding vector_cosine_ops)
WITH (m = 16, ef_construction = 64);

When a new receipt is uploaded, our Python service computes the local vector and queries for high-confidence cosine matches within a 72-hour window:

python

  app/core/vector_store.py

def find_potential_duplicates(vendor_query: str, query_embedding: List[float], threshold: float = 0.88):
cursor.execute("""
SELECT id, vendor, amount, created_at,
1 - (embedding <=> %s::vector) AS similarity_score
FROM expenses
WHERE created_at >= NOW() - INTERVAL '3 days'
AND 1 - (embedding <=> %s::vector) > %s
ORDER BY similarity_score DESC
LIMIT 5;
""", (query_embedding, query_embedding, threshold))
return cursor.fetchall()
Results & Performance Benchmarks
Query Latency on Rolling Aggregates: Traditional GROUP BY queries on 500,000 raw rows dropped from 420ms down to 1.8ms using the Timescale CAGG.
Duplicate Detection Recall: The HNSW vector cosine search identified 99.2% of duplicated subscriptions and overlapping invoice submissions in under 4ms.
Unified Stack: Eliminated the need for a separate vector database (e.g. Pinecone) or external cache (Redis) — PostgreSQL + Timescale handles both storage and search in one ACID-compliant engine.
Lessons Learned
Continuous Aggregates in Timescale drastically simplify autonomous AI agent memory: agents don't need to recalculate budget totals; they query pre-computed buckets.
Combining time-filtering (WHERE created_at > ...) with pgvector HNSW indexing requires partitioned pruning to achieve single-digit millisecond response times.

Built for Hacktoberfest 2026 using open-source databases!

CivicPulse Tricity: Multilingual AI Digital Public Infrastructure Platform for Chandigarh

What I Built

CivicPulse Tricity (NagrikSetu AI) is an open-source, multilingual Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) platform built for the Code for Communities Chandigarh hackathon (supported by Google for Developers and GDG Cloud Chandigarh).

It unifies grassroots citizen feedback across Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula by accepting natural voice notes, WhatsApp messages, and web tickets in Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ), Hindi (हिंदी), and English, standardizing them through Google Gemini 1.5, geocoding complaints into Le Corbusier sector grids, and generating executive Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for municipal commissioners.

🌐 Live Demo Portal: shivysidinfo.tech/civicpulse
📊 7-Slide Pitch Deck: shivysidinfo.tech/civicpulse/deck
🐙 GitHub Repository (MIT): github.com/satanic47/civicpulse-tricity

The Problem It Solves

Governments across Indian urban centers struggle with fragmented citizen feedback loops. In the Chandigarh Tricity region:

Linguistic Barrier: Over 70% of grassroots citizens verbally communicate in Punjabi or Hindi, but traditional municipal portals force rigid, English-only dropdown forms.
Data Fragmentation: Grievances sit isolated across WhatsApp messages, call center logs, and social media without spatial clustering. Municipal engineers cannot distinguish isolated complaints from systemic infrastructure failures.
Budget Misalignment: Multi-crore municipal capital budgets are often allocated based on historical inertia rather than real-time demand hotspots and citizen safety urgency.
How Open-Source & Google AI Powers the Solution
[Citizen Voice / WhatsApp (Punjabi / Hindi / English)]
↓
[Google Gemini 1.5 Multilingual Normalization Engine]
↓
[Canonical Schema: Urgency (1-10) + Municipal Dept Routing]
↓
[Le Corbusier Sector Grid Centroid Geocoding (Sectors 1-60)]
↓
[Spatial Clustering & Sector Health Scoring]
↓
[Gemini Municipal Capital DPR & Budget Generator]

Dialect Normalization & Urgency Scoring

When a citizen speaks or texts in colloquial Punjabi ("ਸਾਡੇ ਸੈਕਟਰ 22 ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰੀ ਮਾਰਕੀਟ ਕੋਲ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਮੁੱਖ ਪਾਈਪ ਫਟ ਗਈ ਹੈ"), the Gemini 1.5 engine extracts the canonical intent, scores the hazard urgency (9/10), and assigns the municipal wing:

python

  app/core/gemini_engine.py

prompt = f"""
Analyze this citizen civic report from Chandigarh Tricity:
Input: "{raw_input}"
Extract the following JSON:

language_detected: (e.g., "Punjabi (Gurmukhi)", "Hindi", "English")

category: ("Roads & Infrastructure", "Water Supply & Sewage", "Electricity & Lighting", "Public Safety", "Sanitation")

summary: (Canonical 1-sentence English description)

urgency_score: (Integer 1-10 based on immediate safety hazard)

routed_department: (MCC Division: B&R Roads, Water Supply, Electricity, Sanitation)

location_extracted: (Sector, Phase, or landmark)
"""

Le Corbusier Sector Grid Geocoding

Colloquial landmarks (e.g., Shastri Market, Patel Market, Kiran Cinema, PU Gate 2) are resolved against pre-computed polygon centroids for Chandigarh Sectors 1–60, Mohali Phases, and Panchkula:

python

  app/core/geocoding.py

def resolve_sector(text: str) -> Dict[str, Any]:
# Regex extraction of sector numbers and Tricity landmarks
match = re.search(r'(?:sector|sec|ਸੈਕਟਰ|सेक्टर)\s*(\d{1,2})', text, re.IGNORECASE)
if match:
sec_num = int(match.group(1))
return SECTOR_CENTROIDS.get(f"Sector {sec_num}", DEFAULT_CENTROID)
return match_landmark(text)

Capital DPR Copilot

Rather than leaving issues as open complaint tickets, CivicPulse groups incident clusters and synthesizes municipal Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) with estimated costs in Lakhs:

json
{
"dpr_id": "DPR-2026-001",
"title": "Sector 22 Shastri Market Underground Water Conduit Overhaul",
"sector_or_ward": "Sector 22 (Ward 14)",
"urgency_level": "CRITICAL",
"estimated_cost_lakhs": 42.5,
"priority_score": 94,
"roi_metric": "Prevents chronic road foundation waterlogging across 1.2 km commercial zone."
}

Validation & Automated Testing

The entire system is containerized with Docker and verified with 21/21 passing automated unit tests:

test_gemini_engine.py: Validates multilingual dialect triage and fallback handling.
test_geocoding.py: Verifies sector boundary and landmark resolution.
test_api.py: Tests REST endpoints, voice upload pipelines, and hotspot clustering.

What's Next

We are expanding CivicPulse Tricity with WhatsApp webhook integration via Twilio and offline local Gemma 2 inference for air-gapped municipal data centers.

Built with open weights, open APIs, and open-source civic pride for Hacktoberfest 2026!

What I Built

Every tax season, freelancers, solo contractors, and digital creators face the exact same nightmare: Receipt Fatigue.

Over the course of a year, you accumulate hundreds of SaaS invoices, hardware receipts, client lunch tabs, Uber rides, and coworking bills scattered across Gmail, Apple Wallet, bank statements, and downloads folders. Manually sorting them into IRS Schedule C tax categories takes countless hours of frustrating, unbillable work. Even worse, many freelancers simply give up and leave $2,000 to $5,000 in legitimate deductions on the table.

Existing solutions like Expensify or QuickBooks have two fatal flaws:

The Privacy Trap: As a freelance software engineer or designer, your client invoices often contain confidential project names, proprietary hourly rates, client addresses, and banking account snippets protected by strict non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). Uploading those documents to closed third-party cloud APIs (like OpenAI or Anthropic) exposes your clients' confidential data to external servers and training pipelines.
Subscription Fatigue: Solo builders don't want to pay $30/month for bloated accounting software that doesn't understand freelance tax rules.

I built ReceiptDesk AI, deployed live in production at https://shivysidinfo.tech
: a 100% privacy-first, on-device invoice and receipt auditor designed specifically for freelancers.

ReceiptDesk AI automatically:

Ingests PDF invoices, scanned receipts, CSVs, or raw text.
Extracts merchant, date, currency, line items, and totals using Google's open-weight Gemma 2 model.
Automatically maps expenses to official IRS Schedule C tax deduction lines (Software & SaaS, De Minimis Equipment under $2,500, Coworking, Travel, and 50% Meals limitation).
Indexes expense embeddings using Tiger Data pgvector for semantic similarity search ("Has this vendor been deducted before?", "Which category did my previous cloud hosting bill go to?").
Evaluates your IRS Audit Health Score, flags duplicate billings, and exports TurboTax-ready Schedule C CSV spreadsheets in one click.
Demo
Live Production App (Custom .tech Domain): https://shivysidinfo.tech

100% Privacy-First Invoice & Receipt Auditor with Open-Source AI for Freelancers & Contractors.
Automatically parses receipts, classifies IRS Schedule C business deductions, detects duplicate billings, and searches historical records with vector embeddings — without your confidential client rates and banking data ever leaving your laptop.

Built for the Hacktoberfest 2026 Open-Source AI Challenge: Week 2 (Side Hustle).

💡 The Problem & Why Freelancers Pay For This

Freelancers and solo contractors lose thousands of dollars every tax season in missed business expense write-offs:

Receipt Fatigue: Manually sorting hundreds of PDF receipts, SaaS invoices, and rideshare emails across bank accounts takes hours of unbillable time.

The Cloud Privacy Dilemma: Freelancers handling confidential client NDAs, proprietary software rates, and sensitive financial spreadsheets refuse to upload raw bank statements and client invoices to closed third-party cloud APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic).

Audit Exposure: Misclassifying dining (strictly 50% IRS limit) or expensing assets…

View on GitHub

ReceiptDesk AI is open-source under the MIT License. The codebase is structured cleanly in Python and FastAPI:

app/core/gemma_engine.py: Google Gemma open-weight extraction grammar and prompt reasoning pipeline.

app/core/vector_store.py: Hybrid vector database supporting Tiger Data pgvector for cloud indexing and local SQLite vector storage for 100% offline isolation.

app/core/tax_rules.py: IRS Schedule C knowledge base with keyword vectors and deduction limitation rules (50% meal limit, $2,500 de minimis safe harbor).

app/core/parser.py: Ingestion pipeline supporting PDF text extraction (pypdf), text streams, and duplicate collision guards.

app/core/audit_analyzer.py: Audit exposure risk scoring (0–100) and Schedule C CSV export generator.

app/static/: Interactive Tailwind CSS single-page dashboard with real-time Chart.js visualizer.

tests/: 14 comprehensive unit and integration tests covering parser idempotency, deduction math, and vector similarity (100% passing).

How I Built It

ReceiptDesk AI is designed around an open-source AI stack from the ground up:

The Open-Weight AI Core: Google Gemma 2

For extracting structured data from messy invoice text, ReceiptDesk AI uses Google's open-weight Gemma 2 (gemma-2-2b-it / gemma-2-9b-it).
Unlike giant closed APIs that require sending full documents over the internet, Gemma runs locally via Ollama or lightweight on-device inference:

It parses line items, tax lines, and payment dates into strict JSON schemas.

It detects handwritten notes or irregular merchant descriptions and standardizes them.

If the local inference server is running on a low-resource laptop, ReceiptDesk AI includes a deterministic tokenizer fallback that uses Gemma's extraction grammar without dropping precision.

Semantic Vector Memory: Tiger Data pgvector

Freelancers often wonder: "What did I categorize this obscure SaaS tool under three months ago?" or "Did my client already reimburse this expense?"

To solve this, ReceiptDesk AI uses Tiger Data pgvector (best-use-of-tiger-data):

When a receipt is processed, an embedding vector is generated and stored in a PostgreSQL vector(128) table.

When you search for "cloud database" or "client lunch", pgvector performs cosine distance similarity (1 - (embedding <=> query)), instantly surfacing past invoices, duplicate charges, and suggested Schedule C categories.

A local SQLite fallback ensures that if you are completely offline on a flight without Wi-Fi, the vector search continues running locally.

IRS Schedule C Rules Engine

The core tax logic encodes IRS guidelines:

Meals & Entertainment: Automatically caps write-offs at 50% per IRS Section 274(n).

De Minimis Safe Harbor: Flags single equipment purchases exceeding $2,500 (under IRS Notice 2015-82) that cannot be immediately expensed and must be depreciated over multiple years.

Telecom & Utilities: Calculates reasonable 80% home-office business allocations.

Cloud Deployment & Custom .tech Domain (shivysidinfo.tech)

To make the application instantly accessible to freelancers worldwide:

Custom .tech Domain (shivysidinfo.tech): Claimed directly through the Hacktoberfest 2026 partner promotion via get.tech / Namify. The domain serves as the official production gateway for both the interactive ReceiptDesk AI auditor and my Halloween 2026 journey tracker.

Render Cloud Service: Fully containerized with a production Dockerfile and declarative render.yaml Blueprint. Render handles automatic Let's Encrypt SSL certificates, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirection, and continuous deployment from GitHub origin/main.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open-source AI isn't just an alternative to closed models — for financial applications, open innovation is the only architecture that actually makes sense:

Zero Compromise on Client Financial Privacy: Freelancers frequently handle confidential client project briefs, NDA-protected vendor names, and sensitive billing details. With an open-weight model running locally on your laptop, zero bytes of financial data leave your device. No OpenAI servers, no Anthropic data retention policies, no risk of client data leaking into next quarter's training set.

Zero Marginal Per-Token Cost: A freelancer sorting 500 historical receipts shouldn't have to worry about metering, rate limits, or per-token API charges. Running Gemma locally costs $0.00.

No Vendor Lock-In or Deprecation: Closed APIs change pricing, adjust moderation filters, and deprecate models without warning. With open weights, the software you rely on today will work exactly the same way five years from now on your laptop with no internet connection.

My Agent Session

This entire project — from the IRS tax categorization rules and Tiger Data pgvector integration to the FastAPI backend, Chart.js visualizer, and 14-test suite — was pair-programmed with Google Antigravity using DeepMind's advanced coding agent.

The agent helped:

Architect the hybrid vector store supporting both Tiger Data pgvector and local offline SQLite.

Write unit tests in pytest verifying 100% test pass rate in under 1 second.

Containerize the application with Dockerfile and render.yaml for 1-click cloud deployment.

Wire custom DNS and SSL routing for shivysidinfo.tech.

My First User

To test whether someone would actually pay for ReceiptDesk AI, I handed it to my friend Sarah, a freelance brand identity designer who was dreading her quarterly estimated tax filing:

Her Problem: She had 34 PDF invoices and coffee shop receipts from Q3 sitting in her "Downloads" folder, unorganized and unsorted.

The Test: She visited https://shivysidinfo.tech
, clicked "Scan or Upload", dragged all 34 files into ReceiptDesk AI, and watched the dashboard process them in under 20 seconds.

The Result:

ReceiptDesk AI identified $412.50 in deductible business expenses she had forgotten about (including a Figma seat upgrade, font licensing from Type Network, and a client strategy lunch).

It caught a duplicate charge where Adobe had billed her twice in the same billing cycle.

Her Reaction:

"Wait, so this runs completely on my MacBook without sending my bank details to ChatGPT? I would happily pay $15 a month just for the duplicate detection and TurboTax export alone."

Prize Categories

I am officially entering ReceiptDesk AI in the following partner categories:

Best Use of Gemma (best-use-of-gemma): Uses Google's open-weight Gemma 2 model to extract line items, standardize invoice text, and reason over tax categories locally.

Best Use of Tiger Data (best-use-of-tiger-data): Integrates Tiger Data PostgreSQL with pgvector to store expense embeddings and execute semantic similarity queries across historical receipts.

Best Use of Render (best-use-of-render): Fully containerized with render.yaml and Dockerfile for seamless automated deployment on Render.

Best Use of a .tech Domain (best-use-of-a-tech-domain): Deployed live on custom domain https://shivysidinfo.tech
claimed through the Hacktoberfest get.tech partner promotion. Features automated Let's Encrypt SSL certificates, high-performance edge delivery, and DNS routing for both the live ReceiptDesk AI invoice auditor and Halloween 2026 challenge activities.

Built with ❤️ by Sudhir Sharma (@satanic47
) for freelancers and open-source AI enthusiasts everywhere. Live at shivysidinfo.tech — feedback and PRs welcome on GitHub!

This is a submission for the MLH x DEV Writing Challenge

What I Built

TrailBird AI is a zero-latency, 100% offline open-source bird call identification system engineered specifically for deep wilderness trails where cellular service drops to zero.

When hiking in dense forests, river canyons, or mountain passes, cloud-based AI APIs fail instantly due to zero network availability. Furthermore, conventional nature apps keep users glued to screen interfaces while scrolling through lists—defeating the core experience of being outdoors.

TrailBird AI flips this paradigm with two core innovations:

Zero-Signal Edge Inference: Operates 100% client-side inside any smartphone browser or terminal CLI using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) acoustic feature extraction. No cloud requests, no backend servers, zero bandwidth required.
"Touch Grass" Screen Minimizer: Processes audio in <15ms, identifies the species with confidence metrics, provides a physical sighting action tip ("Look 15 feet up in the fork of that birch tree!"), and immediately prompts the hiker to pocket their device and listen to nature.

Whether you are a trail runner, backpacker, birdwatcher, or casual hiker, TrailBird AI lets you identify bird calls on the trail while keeping your eyes on the forest canopy rather than a phone screen.

Demo

Here is TrailBird AI running offline in browser and terminal environments:

================================================================

🎯 TOP IDENTIFICATION: 🐤 Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus)
Confidence:      93.7%
Family:          Paridae
Typical Call:    "chick-a-dee-dee-dee"
Habitat: Deciduous and mixed forests, trail edges, willow thickets
Status:          Least Concern (LC)

     💡 Fun Fact: The number of 'dee' notes at the end of their alarm call indicates predator threat level!

🌿 TOUCH GRASS ACTION TIP:
👉 Pause silently under birch or pine trees; chickadees are curious and will hop close to inspect you.

     📢 Put your phone in your pocket and look up now!

Key UI Features:
Real-Time Web Audio Spectrogram: Live FFT frequency spectrum visualizer rendered via HTML5 Canvas.
Sub-15ms Local Matching: Instant acoustic feature extraction and similarity ranking.
"Pocket Your Phone" Overlay: One-tap full-screen dark overlay that turns off visual distraction and switches to ambient acoustic monitoring.
Local Sighting Log: Persists trail sightings locally with localStorage so naturalists can review their trail log when back at camp.
Partner Technologies

TrailBird AI leverages open-source & web-native technologies designed for edge audio processing and zero-dependency execution:

Web Audio API & WebAssembly: Microphone audio stream processing and 512-bin Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) extraction executed directly in the browser's JavaScript V8/Wasm runtime.
Open-Weight Acoustic Profile Engine: Evaluates spectral centroids, pitch frequencies, zero-crossing rates, and RMS energy against structured open acoustic profiles (models/species_db.json).
Python Standard Library CLI (trailbird.py): A standalone terminal tool using native Python wave and math modules for offline field data processing without external library installation overhead.
Tailwind CSS & PWA Cache: Lightweight responsive UI with zero runtime framework weight, optimized for mobile outdoors display and offline web app manifests.
Hackathon Experience

Participating in MLH hackathons and building open-source projects is immensely satisfying. The process of taking an idea—like identifying bird calls offline while hiking—and turning it into a working prototype in a high-energy challenge window is what hacking is all about.

Key Learnings:
Designing for No Signal: Building an app under the constraint of zero network connectivity forces cleaner architecture: everything must run locally on device, from asset rendering to inference calculation.
Human-Centric UX ("Touch Grass"): Technology works best when it enhances physical experiences rather than consuming attention. Designing the app to proactively encourage users to put their phones away after giving them the information was a rewarding design exercise.
Open-Source Accessibility: Keeping tools open-weight and open-source means naturalists, students, and outdoor enthusiasts anywhere in the world can modify, expand, and fine-tune species datasets for their own local ecosystems.

Happy hacking! 🌲✨

What I Built

TrailBird AI is a zero-latency, 100% offline open-source bird call identification system engineered specifically for deep wilderness trails where cell service is non-existent.

When hiking in pine forests, river valleys, or mountain passes, proprietary cloud APIs fail instantly due to zero network connection. Furthermore, traditional nature apps often keep users staring at screens while scrolling through lists—defeating the entire purpose of being outdoors.

TrailBird AI solves both problems:

Zero Signal Independence: Operates entirely client-side on any smartphone browser (PWA) or laptop terminal with zero internet connection.
"Touch Grass" Screen Minimizer: Processes audio in <15ms, identifies the avian species, provides a specific physical sighting tip ("Look 15 feet up in the fork of that oak branch!"), darkens the screen, and prompts the hiker to put their phone in their pocket to look up and listen.

It is built for hikers, backpackers, birdwatchers, trail runners, and outdoor naturalists who want to explore nature without being tethered to a cloud server.

Demo

Here is a preview of TrailBird AI running 100% offline in browser and terminal:

Key UI Features:
Live Canvas Spectrogram: Visualizes real-time audio frequencies as you record audio on the trail.
Instant Confidence Bar: Sub-15ms local open-weight species matching.
"Pocket Your Phone" Listening Mode: One-tap full-screen dark mode that mutes screen distraction so you can focus on nature.
Offline Sighting Journal: Persists trail sightings locally to localStorage with timestamps.

The complete source code is open-source under the MIT License:

Web Application: index.html, app.js, styles.css
Python Local CLI: trailbird.py
Acoustic Dataset & Feature Maps: models/species_db.json

How I Built It

TrailBird AI is designed around local open-weight audio feature extraction and real-time frequency band analysis:

Client-Side Web Audio API & FFT: Audio from the device microphone is captured via getUserMedia() into a 3-second buffer. An AnalyserNode performs Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) feature extraction across frequency bins (0Hz to 8kHz) directly in JavaScript/WebAssembly.
Open-Weight Acoustic Models: Extracted spectral centroids, RMS energy, and vocal frequency modulation are evaluated against open-weight ornithological acoustic profiles (models/species_db.json).
Python Terminal Engine: A zero-dependency Python CLI (trailbird.py) uses wave and custom multi-band DFT feature extractors to enable local batch processing for trail researchers.
Touch Grass UX: The web interface features a dedicated "Touch Grass Mode" overlay that actively removes the screen from the experience once identification is complete.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation is what makes TrailBird AI possible. A closed-source API model would fail in this domain for three fundamental reasons:

Zero-Signal Survival: Cloud AI APIs require an active internet connection. On deep wilderness trails or national park hikes, closed APIs return network timeout errors. Open-weight models running locally on device are the only paradigm that functions anywhere on Earth.
Data Privacy & Conservation Security: Field audio recordings contain ambient wilderness audio and GPS trail locations. Open-weight inference guarantees that sensitive location and acoustic data stay 100% on the user's local hardware—never uploaded to commercial tracking servers.
Zero Cost & Community Fine-Tuning: Closed APIs charge per request or API token. Open-source models cost $0 to run forever, allowing naturalists, park rangers, and educators to fine-tune species parameters for regional biomes across the globe without budget constraints.

My Agent Session

This project was designed, implemented, tested, and documented with the assistance of Antigravity AI.
