Why MDM Isn’t Enough for IT Admins in 2025

As IT admins, we’ve relied on Mobile Device Management (MDM) tools for years to manage smartphones and tablets. But the way we work has changed — and so have the devices we manage.

Today, IT teams are responsible for a mix of:
Mobile phones

Laptops and desktops

Kiosks and rugged devices

IoT endpoints

MDM, while useful, often falls short when it comes to managing this diverse fleet.

That’s where Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) comes in.

UEM is an evolution of MDM — built to manage all types of endpoints through a single platform. It supports multiple operating systems (like Android, iOS, Windows, macOS), lets you push apps and policies remotely, and gives you more visibility into your device environment.

For teams supporting remote work, BYOD, and large-scale device rollouts, UEM provides the flexibility and control that MDM alone can't offer.

Final Thoughts
If you’re finding MDM too limited for your current IT needs, it might be time to explore UEM. It’s not about replacing what works — it’s about adapting to what’s next.

Discussion: Is Modern MDM Still Just About Devices? Let’s Talk IAM, Compliance, and Context

Hey devs, sysadmins, and IT pros 👋

Over the past few years, Mobile Device Management (MDM) has evolved drastically—from basic remote wiping and app control to full-blown endpoint orchestration. But with remote work, BYOD culture, and compliance mandates climbing like never before, I’m starting to feel like MDM is just one part of a bigger access puzzle.

So here's a question I've been chewing on lately:

Where do we draw the line between MDM and IAM in 2025—and should we even be drawing one anymore?

🔐 MDM Meets IAM: The New Reality
Think about this:

Your MDM secures the device.

Your IAM secures the identity.

But what really matters is the context:
Who is accessing what data, from where, on which device, under what risk profile?

Today's top UEM (Unified Endpoint Management) solutions are now integrating:

Conditional access policies

Context-aware authentication

Risk-based compliance checks

This isn't just about mobile anymore. It's laptops, desktops, rugged devices, IoT endpoints, and even contractor devices. Now IAM platforms like Okta, Ping, or Azure AD are playing nicely with MDM platforms to create a zero-trust fabric.

🔄 So Are We Moving Toward UAM? (Unified Access Management?)
It kind of feels like we’re heading toward a convergence where the acronym soup—MDM, IAM, UEM, ZTNA—just melts into one: a single pane of control for access + endpoint + identity + risk.

The lines are blurry, and maybe that’s a good thing.

💬 Let’s Discuss
Here are some points I'd love to hear your thoughts on:

As developers or IT admins, do you feel that MDM platforms should handle identity too? Or is that IAM's turf?

Do you use solutions that integrate both (e.g., Scalefusion UEM + Google Workspace)?

How do you handle access control for unmanaged devices?

Where does Zero Trust fit into your strategy?

📢 Bonus Thought:
Wouldn’t it be cool to have an open-source standard or SDK that lets IAM and MDM tools talk to each other natively—without vendor lock-in?

Drop your thoughts, tech stack, horror stories, or wishlists below 👇
Let’s figure out where the future of device and access management is heading.

This article explores the growing relationship between smart cities and digital signage, highlighting the potential for a more informative, interactive, and efficient urban environment. MDM (Mobile Device Management) is identified as a key tool for managing the complex digital signage networks that will be crucial for smart city success.

The Rise of Smart Cities and Digital Transformation

The world is witnessing a rapid urbanization trend, prompting cities to embrace smarter and more efficient ways of functioning. Smart cities leverage cutting-edge technologies like AI, machine learning, and natural language processing to improve the quality of life for citizens, optimize resource allocation, and enhance overall sustainability.

Smart Cities & Digital Signage

Digital Signage: Beyond Static Displays

A critical element in this digital transformation is the seamless integration of digital signage into the urban fabric. These are not just replacements for traditional advertisements; they are dynamic, data-driven communication tools that can adapt to the needs of a smart city.

Imagine digital kiosks displaying real-time public transport updates, interactive maps for route navigation, and air quality information – all on a single screen. QR codes on these signs can provide even deeper levels of engagement, allowing citizens to access additional details.

Real-Time Communication and Public Safety

Disseminating real-time information is a hallmark of smart cities. Digital signage plays a pivotal role here. From traffic updates and weather forecasts to emergency alerts and evacuation routes, these signs ensure citizens are promptly informed.

During emergencies, digital displays can switch from routine content to broadcast vital information, promoting public safety. In public health crises, they can provide updates on testing sites, vaccination centers, and safety guidelines.

Sustainability and Cost-Effectiveness

Sustainability is a major focus for smart cities, and digital signage aligns perfectly with this vision. Unlike traditional printed signs, digital displays significantly reduce paper and ink consumption, minimizing waste and environmental impact.

Furthermore, remote content updates eliminate the need for printing and distributing new materials, saving resources and cutting costs associated with physical signage production and maintenance.

Customization and Targeted Messaging

Digital signage offers a level of customization that traditional signage simply cannot match. Content can be tailored to specific locations, times of day, and events, ensuring highly relevant messages are displayed.

For instance, during a local festival, digital signs can showcase event schedules, promote nearby restaurants, and even feature live social media feeds, creating a more vibrant and dynamic urban environment.

Revenue Generation Through Advertising

Beyond communication and service improvement, digital signage can be a revenue source for smart cities. By allowing advertising on public displays, cities can generate income that can be reinvested in infrastructure, public services, and urban development.

Public-private partnerships can also be fostered through digital signage, where businesses can sponsor or collaborate on content, benefiting the local economy and promoting community involvement.

MDM: The Unsung Hero of Smart City Signage

Managing the vast network of digital signage devices in a smart city can be overwhelming. This is where MDM solutions come in. They provide a centralized platform to manage these devices from a single dashboard, including:

Bulk enrollment and provisioning

Applying software updates

Monitoring device health

Pushing, updating, configuring, and managing signage apps

Managing and updating content based on location and purpose

Running signage in single or multi-app kiosk mode

Security, Compliance, and Data Insights

Security is paramount for digital signage networks that may display critical public safety information. MDM solutions enforce security policies, encryption, and authentication measures to protect network integrity. Compliance with data protection regulations and content standards can also be ensured.

MDM solutions offer the capability to collect and analyze data from digital signage devices. These insights can be used to understand user interactions, optimize content delivery, and make data-driven decisions to enhance the effectiveness of the signage network.

This blog post argues that Mobile Device Management (MDM) is a worthwhile investment for transit companies, offering both financial and operational benefits.

Why MDM is important for transit companies:

Mobile devices are crucial for various tasks in transit operations, from ticketing to maintenance.
Managing these devices efficiently and securely is a challenge.
MDM provides a structured approach to manage devices, applications, and data.
How to evaluate the ROI of MDM:

Consider both tangible (reduced costs) and intangible (time savings) benefits.
MDM can improve fleet efficiency through real-time tracking, optimized routes, and timely maintenance.
It enhances data security and compliance, reducing the risk of breaches and fines.
MDM helps with proactive maintenance scheduling and asset tracking, optimizing resource allocation.
It improves passenger experience through self-service kiosks, digital signage, and Wi-Fi. For freight, it can streamline dispatching.
Overall operational efficiency increases due to automation and reduced downtime.

Steps to assess ROI:

Calculate cost savings and time saved by IT staff.
Evaluate improvements in fleet efficiency, including fuel consumption and maintenance.
Estimate the cost of potential data breaches without MDM.
Analyze how MDM can optimize maintenance scheduling and asset tracking.
Consider how MDM can enhance passenger experience and freight dispatching.
Compare the total cost savings and improvements with the initial investment in MDM.
Factor in recurring costs like software updates and future scalability needs.
By following these steps, transit companies can assess the return on investment (ROI) of implementing an MDM solution and make informed decisions about their mobile device management strategy.
