&lt;p&gt;I work in the sports lighting industry, where we design and provide LED lighting solutions for sports facilities.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;SCL has been specializing in LED sports lighting in China for more than 18 years. We have worked on a wide range of sports lighting projects, including football fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, stadiums, training facilities, and other outdoor sports venues.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We have also participated in the drafting of China's national standard for sports lighting.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;One thing I’ve learned from working on sports lighting projects is that a sports floodlight is much more than a high-power LED fixture.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For a successful project, engineers need to consider many factors:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Lighting level and uniformity&lt;br&gt;
Beam angles and light distribution&lt;br&gt;
Glare control&lt;br&gt;
Installation height and pole position&lt;br&gt;
Energy efficiency&lt;br&gt;

Maintenance and long-term reliability&lt;br&gt;
Different requirements for different sports&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For example, lighting a football field and lighting a tennis court may look similar at first, but the optical requirements can be very different.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The challenge is not simply “How bright should the light be?”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It is:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;How can we put the right amount of light in the right place while minimizing glare, energy consumption, and unnecessary spill light?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This is where optical design, photometric calculations, LED technology, and practical engineering experience come together.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I’m joining DEV because I’d like to share more about the technical side of sports lighting—from LED technology and optical design to real-world project challenges and lessons learned from the field.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I’ll also be sharing some of our experience from more than 18 years in the industry.&lt;/p&gt;

      <description>&lt;p&gt;On the evening of August 19, 2026, at the Chase Center in San Francisco, a WNBA show took place — the league-leading Minnesota Lynx faced the secondplaced Golden State Valkyries on the road.&lt;br&gt;
The Intense shows from the beginning.&lt;br&gt;
Lynx rookie Olivia Miles shot 7for8 in the first half, finishing with 20 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds. Kayla McBride also scored 20, hitting a clutch three and celebrating with Stephen Curry’s signature “nightnight” gesture. Napheesa Collier added 18 points and 8 rebounds. The trio powered Minnesota to a 15point lead in the second quarter.&lt;br&gt;
But the turning point came in the fourth quarter when Miles rolled her ankle stepping on a teammate’s foot and was forced to exit. The Valkyries mounted a furious comeback, cutting the deficit to just 7 points. The Lynx ultimately held on for a 7766 victory.&lt;br&gt;
If you watched the broadcast, you probably noticed one thing:&lt;br&gt;
From Miles pushing the ball up the floor to McBride catching and shooting from the corner, from Collier attacking the paint to stepping out for a three — the brightness on the players’ faces remained consistent across the entire court. No flickering, no glaring hot-spots. In slowmotion replays, every detail of every shot was clear.&lt;br&gt;
That’s not luck. That’s the work of a professional sports lighting system.&lt;br&gt;
Back to the headline: What kind of the illumination needed in A CBA Match?&lt;br&gt;
The answer:&amp;nbsp;more professional than you’d imagine.&lt;br&gt;
According to official FIBA standards, an arena hosting international basketball competitions must meet these core lighting requirements:&lt;br&gt;
Horizontal illuminance: at least&amp;nbsp;1,500 Lux&amp;nbsp;average, measured 1.5 meters above the playing surface.&lt;br&gt;
Vertical illuminance:&amp;nbsp;1,700 to 2,000 Lux&amp;nbsp;in the direction of the main TV camera.&lt;br&gt;
Uniformity: the ratio of minimum to average illuminance (U₂) must be&amp;nbsp;≥0.7, and the ratio of minimum to maximum (U₁)&amp;nbsp;≥0.8.&lt;br&gt;
Colour rendering index (Ra):&amp;nbsp;≥90&amp;nbsp;to ensure accurate colour reproduction for broadcast.&lt;br&gt;
Glare control: the Unified Glare Rating (UGR) must remain strictly within limits to minimise visual disturbance for players and cameras.&lt;br&gt;
Flicker-free operation: an absolute prerequisite for slowmotion replays and highframerate live broadcasts.&lt;br&gt;
1,500 Lux — what does that mean in everyday terms? A typical office is lit to around 300 to 500 Lux; a well lit classroom about 500 Lux. A CBAlevel arena needs to hit 1,500 Lux&amp;nbsp;uniformly&amp;nbsp;across the entire playing area — not just bright in one spot and darker in another.&lt;br&gt;
What happens if these standards aren’t met?&lt;br&gt;
For players: moving from the 3point line to the paint through alternating bright and dark zones forces their pupils to constantly adjust — causing fatigue and potentially affecting shooting accuracy. In a game decided by single digits, any visual distraction can shift the outcome.&lt;br&gt;
For broadcasts: substandard illuminance or uniformity makes the camera exposure fluctuate during pans. In slow motion replays, patchy shadows across players’ bodies seriously degrade the viewing experience.&lt;br&gt;
That’s exactly why top tier leagues — WNBA, CBA, FIBA events — always look so “comfortable” on screen: because every fixture in those arenas has been meticulously engineered.&lt;br&gt;
SCL Sports Lighting: turning international standards into reality&lt;br&gt;
When it comes to bringing basketball arenas up to international event lighting standards, SCL Sports Lighting stands out.&lt;br&gt;
At the&amp;nbsp;2025 FIBA U16 Women’s Asia Cup, SCL Sports Lighting designed, supplied, and installed a complete LED sports lighting system from the ground up at the newly built Karisma Arena in Seremban, Malaysia. At&amp;nbsp;Fuqing Sports Hall, SCL Sport lighting provided a professional LED sports lighting system for the 2026 Fuqing Basketball League and future major events. During the league opener, players experienced clear sight lines on fast breaks, sharp contrast between the rim and background on longrange shots, and natural spatial perception in closequarters battles.&lt;br&gt;
SCL was also the official sports lighting supplier for the&amp;nbsp;31st Summer Universiade, providing lighting for some 20 venues.&lt;br&gt;

You're watching a basketball game on TV. The camera follows a fast break, but the picture keeps flickering. As players move quickly, you feel your eyes straining to keep up – something feels off, but you can't quite put your finger on it.&lt;br&gt;
Or worse – you're at the arena, looking up at the big screen replay, and there are visible rolling stripes across the image.&lt;br&gt;
That's not a broadcast signal issue. That's&amp;nbsp;flicker.&lt;br&gt;
Flicker: “the slow motion camera killer”&lt;br&gt;
Flicker, simply put, is light that flashes on and off at a frequency too fast for the human eye to detect. You won't notice it live, but cameras see it clearly.&lt;br&gt;
When high speed cameras capture slow motion replays at hundreds of frames per second, flicker becomes magnified – the picture shows visible flickering and banding, making the replay unusable.&lt;br&gt;
International event standards require flicker percentage to be kept&amp;nbsp;within 3%&amp;nbsp;, while professional HDTV grade broadcasts demand&amp;nbsp;completely flickerfree&amp;nbsp;performance.&lt;br&gt;
Why is this so strict?&lt;br&gt;
Because the decisive moments in basketball often happen in a split second – a steal leading to a fast break, a buzzer beating 3pointer. These plays need to be reviewed frame by frame in slow motion. If the lights flicker, the replay is full of stripes, referees can't make accurate calls, and viewers lose the experience.&lt;br&gt;
Professional basketball venues use LED fixtures with&amp;nbsp;highfrequency drivers or DC constantcurrent power supplies&amp;nbsp;to eliminate flicker at the source.&lt;br&gt;
High CRI: giving the court its true colour&lt;br&gt;
The Colour Rendering Index (Ra) measures how accurately light reproduces the true colours of objects.&lt;br&gt;
A typical LED light has a CRI of around 70 – things look slightly "washed out" or "bluish." Professional basketball venues require&amp;nbsp;Ra ≥ 80, and HDTVgrade events push that up to&amp;nbsp;Ra ≥ 90.&lt;br&gt;
What's the difference?&lt;br&gt;
Under Ra=70 lighting, team jerseys look greyish, the basketball looks dull orange, and the wooden court loses its natural tone. Under Ra=90 lighting, colour are true – red is red, orange is orange, and broadcast pictures are vibrant and natural.&lt;br&gt;
In the era of 4K and even 8K broadcasting, high CRI is a hard requirement. Without accurate colour, even the sharpest picture falls flat.&lt;br&gt;
Anti glare: making the lights "invisible" to athlete&lt;br&gt;
This is the most overlooked factor, yet it has the biggest impact on athletes.&lt;br&gt;
Imagine this: a player catches the ball behind the 3point line, looks up to shoot – if a highintensity light is shining directly into their eyes at that moment, the visual interference alone can change the trajectory of the shot.&lt;br&gt;
Professional lighting design isn't just about making the court bright – it's about making sure the light&amp;nbsp;stays out of&amp;nbsp;the players' and cameras' main lines of sight. Through builtin antiglare lenses, optimized beam angles, and precise light control, players are never staring into direct light anywhere on the court.&lt;br&gt;
The lower the Glare Rating (GR), the better – professional competitions require&amp;nbsp;GR &amp;lt; 30, with HDTVgrade events demanding even stricter limits.&lt;br&gt;
These three requirements are nonnegotiable&lt;br&gt;
Flicker affects&amp;nbsp;broadcast quality&amp;nbsp;– whether slowmotion replays are usable. CRI affects&amp;nbsp;colour accuracy&amp;nbsp;– whether the picture looks pleasing. Glare affects&amp;nbsp;athlete performance&amp;nbsp;– whether players can see the rim clearly.&lt;br&gt;
Together, they answer one question:&amp;nbsp;is this game good to watch?&lt;br&gt;
Nanhai Sports Center: from 500 Lux to over 2,000 Lux&lt;br&gt;
To see how these three hard requirements turn from standards into reality, look no further than the home of the CBA Foshan Lions –&amp;nbsp;Nanhai Sports Center&amp;nbsp;in China.&lt;br&gt;
Before the 2015 to 2016 CBA season, Nanhai Sports Center faced an uncomfortable reality:&amp;nbsp;the original lighting system delivered only about 500 Lux of vertical illuminance.&lt;br&gt;
500 Lux – what does that mean? A well lit classroom is about 500 Lux. Using classroom brightness for a professional basketball league? Clearly not enough.&lt;br&gt;
Even more critical –&amp;nbsp;500 Lux simply couldn't meet TV broadcast standards. The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) demands highdefinition broadcasts; cameras need sufficient light to capture crisp images. At 500 Lux, the picture is noisy, details are blurred, colour are off – viewers strain their eyes, and broadcasters struggle.&lt;br&gt;
SCL Sports Lighting took on the project and designed a&amp;nbsp;solution base on their product :(QDZ500D) for LED sports lighting system&amp;nbsp;specifically in Nanhai Sports Center.&lt;br&gt;
The results after the upgrade speak for themselves:&amp;nbsp;average vertical illuminance exceeds 1,500 Lux, horizontal illuminance exceeds 2,000 Lux, with a uniformity ratio (U₂) of 0.8.&lt;br&gt;

When Guangdong Television tested the on site data, every single indicator passed. CBA broadcasts from the new season never again suffered from "too dark, too blurry, or too flicker."&lt;br&gt;
