One of the most harmful learning habits in software development is constantly comparing yourself to other developers.

You see someone building an impressive application.

Someone else is contributing to open source.

Another developer is learning a new framework every few weeks.

Someone gets their first job at a major tech company.

And suddenly, you start thinking:

“Why am I not there yet?”
“I'm too slow.”
“Maybe I'm not good enough.”

The problem isn't looking at what other developers are achieving.

The problem is using their progress as a measurement of your own worth.

Every developer has a different starting point, environment, amount of time, access to resources, experience, and challenges.

Someone may learn something in three months that takes you six months.

That doesn't mean you're incapable.

It simply means your journey is different.

What should we compare instead?

Compare yourself with who you were yesterday.

Can you build something today that you couldn't build a few months ago?

Do you understand an error today that used to completely confuse you?

Is your code becoming cleaner?

Are you asking better questions?

Are you understanding concepts more deeply?

If the answer is yes, you're progressing.

Use other developers as sources of inspiration, not as reasons to give up.

Study their projects.

Learn from their approaches.

Ask questions.

Get inspired.

Then go back to building.

You don't need to become someone else.

You need to become a better version of yourself.

Your progress may be slower than someone else's.

It is still progress.
