      <title>Delta – Language learning built on cognitive science, not gamification</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;Deep processing forms more organized schemas of knowledge in your brain, which results in deeper understanding and stronger memory. The knowledge schema is the goal. The memory is the side-effect.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So when learning a language, which requires the retention and application of a diverse range of grammatical and vocabulary structures, you never want to be thinking in isolation. You want to be thinking about &lt;em&gt;integration&lt;/em&gt;. As a result, Delta doesn't get you to recognize translations, fill in the blanks or type what you hear. Instead, Delta asks you to make a &lt;em&gt;judgement&lt;/em&gt; based on a short story it gives you. But surely you can't evaluate something without understanding it first, right? Exactly, which is why aiming to make a judgement &lt;em&gt;forces your brain&lt;/em&gt; to fill in the understanding along the way.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Another thing to know is that difficulty is personal, relative and highly subjective. So why do most other apps assume all of their learners fit into the nice hierarchy of competency known as CEFR? Even the best CEFR classifier only maxes out at a 63% accuracy across six levels. Therefore, Delta has &lt;em&gt;first-class support&lt;/em&gt; for personalization. From the very beginning, forever, Delta presents content in areas that you decide. Finding something a bit too challenging, Delta adapts. But at no point does the system ever say "this learner is at this particular level," because the knowledge we have as individuals is unique, vast, and diverse; a new piece of information that a learner struggles to take in may be effortless for somebody else, because their &lt;em&gt;prior knowledge&lt;/em&gt; makes it more relevant. So, there's no "C1" or "A2", no "intermediate" or "advanced": there's only you and your history, your interests, your background, because learning is (and always should be) personal.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The third way that Delta reinforces learning in its most proper form is with the problem of unknown words. Yes, it is possible that the story Delta gives a learner has a few words that they have never seen before. So what do we do about it? Should we just give them a direct translation into their L1, and risk the target language &lt;em&gt;depending upon&lt;/em&gt; the native language? Merriam-Webster defines language as "a systematic means of communicating ideas or feelings." Not words. Learning new words by associating them with other words is what takes something as beautiful as the Spanish language into... another Tuesday 5th period. So what does Delta do, you ask? Delta gives you a picture. Yes. That's right. A picture. Did you know that visual processing is roughly 20 times faster than reading? Exactly. An image can provide context much more efficiently than a native word ever could.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But there's another trap that lots of learners fall into. And this is to do with modalities. You may have once tried listening to target-language content and figured that adding target-language subtitles on top would "boost comprehension." But it's not boosting your listening skills. The redundancy effect from Sweller's cognitive load theory states that when two different modalities present the same information, your brain focusses on the easier one (reading) and ignores the harder one (listening). Your eyes are bailing out your ears, which is why Delta never merges the two.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So why doesn't everyone do this? Why aren't language-learning apps being built from the ground up in modern research? Why aren't they being ruthlessly engineered for learning efficiency? It's the business model. Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the entire world, and 83% of their revenue comes from subscriptions. They profit from you staying. Whereas, Delta is just me. I'm 19 in a few days, living in the UK, and about to head off to university next month. I got tired of watching the industry optimizing for fun, engagement, MAU, MRR, churn rate. What happened to providing &lt;em&gt;learning&lt;/em&gt;? So, to the best of my ability, I've designed Delta to run entirely in your browser (a near-zero marginal cost), which allows me to charge a simple one-time fee. Not 500 dollars, as if it's some esteemed online course. Not 10,000 dollars, as if everybody can fly to another country. Not 100 dollars an hour, as if everybody has a private tutor on retainer. But just $39. Pay once, then use it for life.&lt;/p&gt;
